Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hello all.

I have a very nice DH as he gave up going out for the day as I was feeling crap and didn't feel up to looking after 2 children today.

Just a bit worried as S is not showing any interest in food at all, will wait a few days and then try again, with Edie it was totally the opposite as she was into her food straight away. Any advice from anyone gratefully recieved.

sybiltherednosedreindeer · 13/12/2008 17:31

5gomad - sometimes they are just ready later I think. My dd tooks months to get into food. I'm sure she was 8/9 months before she had a small amount of food three times a day. SO maybe he is just happy the way he is? Alternatively I would try really quite bland food every day on the assumption that he will get used to it - actually this is what I did with dd and it still took months. I remember despairing of her ever eating a whole pot of fromage frais (one of the tiny pots) in one sitting. Or you could try finger food?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/12/2008 17:43

Thanks Sybil, we are leaving it for a few days again at the moment and then will try him next week, if anything he turns his nose up more for bland food so guess he is just not ready yet.

sybiltherednosedreindeer · 13/12/2008 17:52

I'm a big fan of leaving it, its much easier that way and I think I actually put her off by offering food she just wasn't interested in.

Essie3 · 13/12/2008 18:14

Actually, 5GoMad, glad you raised this, because I don't think Iestyn is particularly fussed at all with food. He turns his head away, closes his mouth etc etc. That's with most things, and it includes bottles now. Maybe it was all too much?

sybiltherednosedreindeer · 13/12/2008 18:26

Sometimes Jamie is keen, other days he just doesn't want to eat anything - so I just throw the food away. I learnt my lesson with dd, I think it took longer because I pushed.

Amberc · 13/12/2008 19:28

Oh thank God for that! Luke won't eat anything whatsoever other than chocolate (accidental - don't ask). He mashes his lips tight so I can't get anything in and if I trick him into opening his mouth by making him laugh he just spits out whatever I put in. Not too worried as he drinks loads of milk but he's on 2 hourly feeds now - he's always hungry. By the way what is follow on milk?

HH Luke has seen the tree and obviously wants to eat all the baubles. We have rearranged his nursery and it's like Disneyland now. He's got glow in the dark stars above his bed and colour changing lights above the changing unit - fab!!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/12/2008 19:55

Follow on milk is aimed for babies over 6 months with the vitamins that they should have.

evening all,

Haven't read all the posts, just wanted to let you know that there a couple of new photos of Isaac up - including our christmas one (yes the santa suit was knitted by me)

DreamingOfMincePiesInAustria · 13/12/2008 22:11

HH Isaac is sooo cute

Amberc · 13/12/2008 22:33

Go on ALex!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amberc · 13/12/2008 22:34

Wow - HH you are an amazing knitter!

Essie3 · 13/12/2008 22:54

Yeah, impressed by the knitting here too! Oh, and Isaac is cute!

bitofasnowqueen · 13/12/2008 23:08

Amberc I don't know much about it, but have read in a few places that you really don't need to use follow on milk.

Feeling very bunged up and full of the cold, so just marking my place and off to bed. Carried that pesky baby around for 9 months and what does he do? Give me his stinking cold .

Paro hope you feel better soon.

HH - cool pictures, and very impressive knitting too. It was a shame you couldn't make it yesterday, but TBH 5 babies in my lounge crushing ricecakes and oatcakes up might have been one too many for my sanity (only joking ladies, your offspring are all lovely, obviously). We can arrange a repeat get together in the New Year hopefully. My favourite novelty baby Xmas photo so far is one sent by a RL friend of her LO wearing a nylon "santa's cutest helper" elf costume. It is a very funny photo as Essie and Sponge can testify. The baby's Dad works in the music business, and I have been wondering whether the same photo is gracing the mantlepieces of a certain boyband who have made a very successful comeback in the last 18 months.

Re: babies refusing all solids, I think this is q normal as others have said. Some babies just aren't ready till a bit later on. Gill Rapley says this in the BLW book, and makes the point that milk is main source of nutrition till almost 1 year. That is as applicable to normal weaning as BLW I think.

Sorry to hear about all the colds. It is miserable isn't it? I have recovered after a week of feeling grim. Last night I tried to have an early night but failed. Despite P being asleep I was having a coughing fit.

systemsaddict · 14/12/2008 09:58

Glad we are not alone with the colds then ... I am feeling rough as a dog, caitlin woke me up every hour from midnight, think it's a cold - or she could have been sulking because I let her cry herself to sleep only took her 5 minutes but she hasn't really had to do it before at night. I ended up giving her Calpol which she promptly threw up in a coughing fit [sigh]. Ds slept in till after 9, always a bad sign, woke up demanding 'midsin' with a puffy face and nasty cough. Dp is the only one to escape so far, he is curled up on the airbed (can't bear sick) being the voice of doom. Argh ...

spongebrainbigpants · 14/12/2008 10:14

Quick post from me cos I've got the family round so should be being sociable!

Started BLW this weekend - so far we've had rice cakes and philly (big hit!), toast, apple and pitta breads. We're having a roast dinner at lunch time so he's going to have some of that. He seems to be enjoying it but very little is actually going in!

He's got a really poorly tummy at the moment and every nappy is a dirty nappy so that's not going to help his appetite.

The other big news from me is that we were on Thames Valley news last night! Meridian had passed the story on to them but no one had told me it was going to be on. I'd flicked on the telly to set the recorder for SCD and there Alex was on the screen !! What a weird co-incidence?!!

I've taped it so hope to upload it later.

HH, love the photo and Santa outfit btw!

SA, really sorry to hear you're feeling rough .

Amber, I've also heard that there's no need to use follow on - apparently they make it because they are not allowed to advertise formula for babies under 6 mths but they are allowed to advertise follow on. It's exactly the same, but also the same price so up to you really!

hedgeHogfather · 14/12/2008 10:51

Thanks for the comments. I remember showing the pattern to my mum about 2/3 days before I went into Labour and her telling me that once I had Isaac (although he was an it at the time) I would have no time to knit - The outfit was finished at the end of November so [tounge sticking out emotion]

Would echo what others have said about babies refusing solids - Don't worry about it too much. Isaac ignored the toast yesterday but went for my richtea biscuit and half of it went down, and then at FIL's for dinner he ignored the carrots and roastie and went for the sprout (I love them DH hates them)

SA will send you some virtual chocolate, and hope that you are all feeling better soon.

amber no idea about follow on milk, but got some 'goodnight' milk through the post and saw that it contained cereals and stuff and wondered how they think babies like going to bed with a full tummy coz I hate it.

SBBP could the dirty nappies be teeth rather than tummy - Isaac is a once every 4-5 days kind of guy and I know when his teeth are playing up as everyone is a dirty one

Right am catching up on SCD and Merlin from last night, while DH is doing his paperwork at work.

mulledwhinegums · 14/12/2008 11:55

Hello, have been lurking but haven't had much to post. Have had a v dull week by myself - am I bad for being secretly pleased that DP is not having a good time in St Petersburg? He is working loads - they work 7 days a week - and hasn't been out at all. He is off on Monday afternoon, and was going to do some touristy stuff, but it seems like everything is closed on Mondays! Ho ho ho.

B did his first bit of crawling yesterday!! Only about 6 inches, but it was definitely under his own steam. Am panicking about baby proofing our flat, it's a bloody death trap atm.

Katyjo, lovely to see you and Mia again. I'm hoping B is going to be better at Waterbabies this week... I felt so bad last week, he was really not happy about it! Which is a shame, cos it's the only baby thing I've done with him so far that I like! Typical eh?

Paromincepies - when I had a cold, the pharmacist said I could take Sudafed while bf, which really cleared my nose. I'm sure you must be able to take/get something.

Hope you're all having a good weekend.

spongebrainbigpants · 14/12/2008 12:13

Hi whinegums, sorry you're having a boring week .

Have just uploaded some new photos - one of A in his FC outfit that one of his uncles brought over (not hand knitted - I really don't know where you find the time HH! ), and one of his first attempt at BLW!

HH, think you might be right about the nappies - he seemed in a lot of pain last night .

abdnhikinginawinterwonderland · 14/12/2008 15:24

5gomad - Fraser wasn't into his food at all either so I took a break and tried again last week and now he's really enjoying it. He was obviously not meant to start eating until 6 months, which is the opposite of how his brother was.

HH love the suit!

neenztwinz · 14/12/2008 15:41

Whinegums, well done B on the crawling!

Sponge, very cute photos. Alex is a very bonny baby (does anyone say bonny anymore ).

We went out last night and took DTs to PILs who babysat and we slept there. We put them to bed fine at 7pm but both were up when we got home at midnight. I got Theo to go to sleep but Esther was very unsettled and ended up sleeping with us all night. I think she was scared we were going to disappear again. Luckily Theo slept all night - I can cope when it is just one of them being demanding.

The DTs also started refusing solids soon after starting. Don't know why. They are eating well not but they are not sleeping too well at the mo which I hope is just their colds and not cos they are not eating enough/right amounts. Does anyone have the GF weaning book? What does it say about the amounts of food they should have at 7mths? I am thinking maybe they are not getting enough milk but I can't get them to drink any more (ecxept in the evenings and in the night!). I wondered should I cut back on the solids so they drink more milk, but I am a bit reluctant to do that or they might be up even more in the night. Perhaps I should give them more solids - I do offer their meals till they refuse but if I then offer something else eg baby rice or fruit then they usually will eat more. My instinct says they need more solids but I know the BLW camp say they should really be having milk as their main source of nutrition until they are 1 but I am not sure what evidence that is based on . Alipali does Gill Rapley reference that statement about milk or explain why that's the case?

spongebrainbigpants · 14/12/2008 15:49

Neenz, that's so funny your comment about people using the word bonny - I used it in my tv interview and when I was watching it last night I thought, "oh my god, that sounds sooo old fashioned!" One of the journalists had said it to me just before we started filming so it was the first word that popped into my head!

Can't really help on the refusing food thing, but am I being pedantic to think there's a difference between main source of nutrition and main source of calories? So you don't need to worry so much about what they're eating cos they will be getting all their nutrients from you but you can feed them more calories in the way of baby rice, etc. Surely baby rice can't have many different nutrients in it but is a good source of calories? It made sense to me anyway!

UpsidedownChristmascake · 14/12/2008 17:35

In the briefest of briefs, hope yuo're all well. Lovely to see Penguin and Essie the other day. Penguin, good luck if I don't speak to you.

Neenz, I have Gina, and she gives sample menus for 6-7 months, 7-8 months etc, but no hard and fast rules. The book was written before the weaning guidelines changed (showing my age!), so it assumes that you start at four months. But in essence, she suggests three meals a day and three double breastfeeds a day.

Amber, Department of Health and many nutritionists think follow-on milk is unnecessary and just a marketing ploy.

Life crazy at the moment so have been lurking.
