DaidiNaNollag · 07/12/2008 16:16

By the Way, Denny I saw on another of our threads that you were going to try the Adiri bottle. How did that go? ds4 is currently refusing bottles but I'm hoping it's temporary!

DaidiNaNollag · 07/12/2008 18:49

Oh and I forgot to tell you girls that Harry never said Mama again after that time BUT..... last week he said Obama!
I was very proud!

scorpio1 · 07/12/2008 19:23

DH knocked him out in the second round

LilMatchGirlInVictorianSqualor · 08/12/2008 09:26

OMG. I watched Louis Theroux last night, about Johannesburg.
Is it really that bad???

SalLikesEggnogUnderMistletoe · 08/12/2008 09:34

Hello. I didn't watch it, but parts of Johannesburg are really bad. The nicer residential areas are all (or the ones that I've seen anyway) gated developments, so luxury houses, pools etc inside, but it's almost as if it's a small town that is fenced off and it's got security at the entrance etc. I'm sure tv made it look extra bad, but there are definitely areas where I'd never, ever go. Most of South Africa isn't like that of course, and a lot of people that work in Johannesburg will live somewhere else and commute (whether driving every day or, and this is quite common lately, living somewhere great like Cape Town, and working in their office there one week, then flying up to Johannesburg the next and staying in hotel for the week).

A shame I missed it, I'd have liked to have seen the program. But as a general rule, I'd never live in Johannesburg (largely because it's soulless anyway). What did they show on the program?

LilMatchGirlInVictorianSqualor · 08/12/2008 09:45

It was horrific Sal.
They showed 'private security firms' beating and whipping people for stealing. There were 'communities' that would try and get the criminals before the security services did (Who were not supposed to beat them, but just hand them over to the police, but they beat them, then bribed the police) and they would stone them, then burn them.
There were big buildings that had been 'hijacked' by criminals who were charging rent to people, but then a different firm would come in, employed by the owner and shove everyone out. Everyone had guns.
One guy was even saying he had shot 3 cops and put people's babies in ovens to make them pay him money!!!
Apparently the ambulance service can take two hours to arrive and the police are worse than useless so the people felt they had no choice but to take the law into their own hands.

It's here on BBCiplayer.

Sorry peachy have left message but is not very useful. THink you would be very good though.

I am having a bad day. My Granny is dying. We weren't that close, she was hard to get close to, but I am feeling curiously sad. And guilty. I didn't see her as much as I should have after I had Molly and she never asked me to go round so I didn't often. And I went in to see her in hospital on fri, but I was going to go in yesterday evening but there was loads of traffic and I was tired so I thought I would go this morning cos she wasn't really that ill and only went in with a bit of an infection and in the night she had a brain stem episode and now she will not know if I am there. My Dad went to see her yesterday morning and she told him she didn't think she was coming out of hospital and kept telling him she loved him. I think that was good for him cos she didn't really say that enough in his life.

And I never got round to showing her my bloody wedding photos. I am a bad grandaughter.

And Molly screamed for 2 hours last night so i am tired as well as sad.

Sorry for moaning will shut up now.

SalLikesEggnogUnderMistletoe · 08/12/2008 10:11

Oh bloody hell, that sounds horrendous!!! Well, I guess if they've got it filmed it must actually exist in some form, even if exaggerated! I'll have a look tonight, thanks. Luckily (for me, not for the unfortunate people who have to experience this!!!) I've never seen anything like this, but it's still shocking to know people can be so cruel, it's horrible just thinking of it. People can be worse than animals really - has anyone read Lord of the Flies? It really upset me when I read it as a teenager - to think people can treat eachother like that. But then, inherently, I think we are all (or can all be) cruel.

SalLikesEggnogUnderMistletoe · 08/12/2008 10:13

Oh Ellie. And of course you're not a bad granddaughter, or else you wouldn't have felt this way - it's because you've got a kind heart that you care. Thinking of you.

EllieG · 08/12/2008 10:20

Thanks sal x

LilMatchGirlInVictorianSqualor · 08/12/2008 11:58

My sympathies Ellie. xx

Denny185 · 08/12/2008 13:53

(((((((Ellie))))))))

DNN - she didnt scream at the adiri bottle but didnt drink out of it either. In the end we went on a stand off and it took 7 1/2 hours but a bottle was finally taken. The teat she took was a MAM (?) its kind of flattened rather than rounded.

DaidiNaNollag · 08/12/2008 13:55

Poor Ellie! Don't feel bad, none of us probably visit our grandparents or even parents as much as we should. And I'm sure you each love each other however it was/wasn't expressed in the past and that's what counts. All families can't be like the Waltons!

SalLikesEggnogUnderMistletoe · 08/12/2008 18:07

Hello. Question to everybody: Do they always do a 8-month checkup (they being hv's) or is this just because I haven't been to the health centre in ages? Hv called today, and I have to take him to health centre on Wednesday for "his 8 month check". To be honest I really don't want to as I know everything is ok, but I guess they have to check on people or something... Not how I envisaged my last non-working day to be honest!

scorpio1 · 08/12/2008 20:04

Mimi has finally decided a Nuby cup is the way forward, hth.

Sal we don't have 8 mth check here.

SalLikesEggnogUnderMistletoe · 08/12/2008 20:07

Oh dear, I bet you they worry about poor Roelof! Fair enough though, there's no way for them to know whether he's ok unless they see him I guess. Thanks Scorpio.

scorpio1 · 08/12/2008 20:09

They used to but they do less now than they used to, so its probably just normal for your area, don't worry!

SalLikesEggnogUnderMistletoe · 08/12/2008 20:35

Phew, that's a relief! Who, paranoid, me???

scorpio1 · 08/12/2008 20:37

Also it may be a first time mum thing here as well, i dunno.

Have had the best few days, feel on cloud nine.

SalLikesEggnogUnderMistletoe · 08/12/2008 20:39

That's a great thing to say - anything specific, or just generally happy?
