Sponge · 02/05/2005 13:29

My understanding was that the hearing test they do at birth now is more accurate and replaces the one they used to do at 8 months (where they just shake rattles etc to either side of the baby), so I think the fact that I now have a hearing test appointment reflects my health authority's lack of organisation rather than any strength.
Just spent weekend at my parents' and Harry has eaten a lot of mud, flowers and garden greenery without apparent ill effects. Hardy little soul .

kirra · 02/05/2005 13:37

hiya, im new!my ds was born 20th july 04, hes just started crawling & pulling himself up and weve had a few bumps the past few days.bless!

hayleylou · 02/05/2005 13:47

I'm new to this thread but not to MN. My dd was born 15th July. She can got on all fours and rocks but thats as far as it goes. If you stand her up next to the sofa she can slowly walk along it!!

littlerach · 02/05/2005 17:19

Welcome to MN both of you, is this your first?

E has started to pull herself up now and marches without going anywhere. She has also startde to steal food! Especially from DD1 who has lost half a bagel and a marmite sandwich to her this weekend. She also pinched a sausage from DH's plate and a tomato!

Is marmite ok to give them, wasn't sure about the salt??

Phoebe's blood test was for Anaemia and lead (since we live in an old house by American standards!), they are both just standard things they test for in the US, not because they are worried about her or anything. You know what they're like here - rather over zealous about all things baby and health!!!

Eshay, can sympathise with you re moving 2 a new place having done it twice in the last 18 months (once from home in the UK to Mystic, Connecticut and then from there down to Washington DC with a 5 week old!), but you will be suprised how quickly you will meet people and get settled. A baby really helps too as there are all sorts of activites etc you can do for them where you make friends for yourself too. Good luck with it all

Phoebe has got her crawling sussed a bit more this weekend, we went up to Boston to see friends (the poor child's 10th and 11th flight!) and their 21/2 year old daughter seemed to really bring her on. She's so mobile now I can't take my eyes off her for a second (she has also had a fat lip and some bumps, but it's all part of the learning process I guess??!!)

jessicasmummy · 02/05/2005 20:11

littlerach - jess loves marmite! she has a smither of it on toast for brekkie!

jessicasmummy · 03/05/2005 16:56

oh and leading on from the first thread.... im a jar junkie! naughty naughty me! its just easier because jess is eating at a differnet time to us - with dh working we dont eat til 7 at the earliest whereas she is fast asleep by then!

chicca · 03/05/2005 20:54

Hi - another new-ish thread person.
DS clearly a lazy arse. Born 10th July and is rocking on all fours but getting super frustrated at not being able to move.
We're on Spain (with no HV system). Would be really interested to know what sort of stuff they test for at the 9 month check?

mmmmchocolate · 03/05/2005 20:58

Hi, I am new to this thread. My DD was born on 25 August 04, and she beem crawling for a month and now pulls and walks along furniture. But nothing i can do will get her to drink a bottle except her bedtime one, any tips or anyone else have this problem????

tew · 04/05/2005 09:47

Hi, I'm new to this thread too. Florence was born on the 28th Aug, obviously very lazy as no signs of crawling! She was a great sleeper until I went back to work part time, and now regulalry wakes in the night to play, gets herself back to sleep after 20 mins (normally) but then wakes up again at 6/7 with a filthy nappy. Any tips on the nappy situation?

As I'm 16 weeks pregnant with no 2, finding it rather tiring. I didn't know about Mumsnet wiht Florence, wish I had!

Eshay · 04/05/2005 11:00

Welcome to all new mums on this thread.

Chicca - At Thomas' 8 month test they didn't really look at anything except his hips and testicles. It was more of a chat where the HV asked me about what he was and wasn't doing. His hearing was done in this way too - she just asked me if he turns around when you make a funny noise etc. He was weighed but not measured. And then we talked a bit about food, drink and home safety. And she gave me a bag with two story books, a toothbrush and toothpaste. I was amazed at this since I was in Lambeth, not one of the richest boroughs in London.

Jessicasmummy - We usually wait with our dinner until after 7 as well. It's just much more peaceful that way Nothing wrong with tins although I think it is probably quite expensive compared to homemade. I usually make up a whole bunch of little meals and keep them in the freezer so I just have to grab one or two different flavours and stick them in the microwave.

Mmmmmmchocolate - could you try skipping the bottle altogether and give her drinks from a cup? It's a completely different experience so she might be tricked. Thomas loves his cups and never has a bottle anymore (born 8 July) although not all cups work. His favourite cup is the Anywayup Cup. Good luck.

Thomas has recently discovered licorice root. He loves it! You should see the look on people's faces when they see him chewing it in the pram. I wonder how long it will be before someone stops me to warn that my son has got hold of a tree branch and is eating it Do any of your babies chew licorice root? Does anyone know of any ill effects this could have? So far I've only been able to find positve stories about how good it is for teething pain, dummy substitution and clean teeth and gums. Obviously I don't let him chew on it hours on end.

jakeybob · 04/05/2005 15:30

Hello I'm new. My ds was born on the 18th july. He has been crawling for 3 months. He has just started to stand on his own. I don't think it will be long before he's walking. He does seem very naughty and has started to bang the tv and change the channel or turn it off! I say no and move him away but this doesn't work. Has anyone any ideas to get him to stop please.

tew · 04/05/2005 15:37

Sounds as though he doesn't want you to watch television!:0

jakeybob · 04/05/2005 15:44

The tv doesn't have to be on for him to bang it. I'm worried he might smash the glass. He bangs it with his toys.

tew · 04/05/2005 16:01

Sorry jakeybob, didn't mean to sound flippant, I watch far too much tv with my dd! Suppose you've tried giving him other things to bang, saucepans, pots, wooden spoons etc?

jakeybob · 04/05/2005 16:20

I have tried to distract him with the toys(by banging them together). He carries them over to the tv to bang on the screen. I wouldn't risk giving him a saucepan just in case he tries to bang that on the tv!

tew · 04/05/2005 16:22

The only way then is distraction, take him into anther room which is a bore for you! My dd isn't at that advanced stage yet, still good, dreading when she turns!

littlerach · 04/05/2005 18:50

It seems the more you say No the more they do it, doesn't it?! DD2 has discovered a little plant which DD1 lovingly planted and watered until we all forgot (it is dead!) and wants it all the time. We actually binned it today as there was no hope for it to be ressurected. And DD2 was hellbent on getting it!!

DD2 has startde to wave and I'm sure she said "hiya" as she did it yesterday, though it may be selective hearing!

Sponge · 06/05/2005 17:41

Sadly it seems to be a boy thing jakeybob.
My first, dd, basically just sat there and then walked. Ds is crawling, always over to the most dangerous thing in the room, and loves to bang on stuff, bash things on the floor, bite me etc. Having said that he's lovely and cuddly and much more physically affectionate than dd was.
I think boys and girls are just different, boys are much more physical and you just have to make allowances for that.
I'm trying to relax and enjoy him (and keep him away from stuff he might break, or hurt himself on).

Spacecadet · 07/05/2005 17:37

blimey emily has suddenly turned into a right little minx!! cruising, grabbing remote controls, turning telly off and the amount of head bumps shes had!!!!!!!!her head must be like concrete!!!she keeps forgetting that she cant quite stand unaidid and lets go, so fall backwards, she did this in the kitchen and the floor is concrete under the line, oooowwwwwwww!!!!oh and we have sold our house for the full asking price however the couple who did want it, would not offer the full price they offered 10000 less!!!! was a bit sad as they werent in a chain and our current buyer has a to sell her house and hasnt even had a viewing yet, im scared we will lose thre house we want as the seller has already had 2 nmore viewings.

sweetkitty · 08/05/2005 09:21

hi all not been on here for a wee while, Abbie's doing great crawling everywhere and into everything, her new nickname is mini Dyson as she hoovers up every little thing on the carpet.

She's become a right little madam though she'll only eat weetabix or yoghurt from a spoon she has to eat everything else herself, I'm running out of finger foods for her, I usually just par boil her a load of veg and give her that with a bit of chicken. She loves cheese on toast as well.

Spacecadet thats great news about your house, we are still waiting on a buyer but we are all moving to join DP in Scotland end of this month. We are moving into my Dads 1 bed flat (he doesn't live there) so it will be cramped but at least we will be together

littlerach · 08/05/2005 19:01

Bet you can't wait, SK, and your DP.

Spacecadet, I know what you mean, DD2 bumps so much yet doesn't seem to feel it, but if I leave the room we have full on tears! Hope your house gets sorted soon, it was about a yr ago that we sold ours and found this one, can remember the strain all too cloearly!
