Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Lambie · 22/06/2005 20:04

I did a search on 'Scotland' and came up with your message, SweetKitty, saying that you had just moved up there. I am a brand new Mumsnetter, and I wanted to ask Mums out there about big moves with small children...

My husband and I are Scots, we live in SE London at the moment, but will soon be moving back to Fife in Scotland with our two-year-old son, to be near family. Can anyone out there tell me what there is to do for Mums in Fife? Apart from the obvious, such as the beach and sea (hurray!), what about music classes, toddler groups, etc? I am a member of the NCT and note that they have a group there.

We are so spoiled in London for things to do other than the playpark - Jake and I go to MonkeyMusic, babygym, etc. I was wondering if anyone lives in that area (East Neuk) and could let me know what they do with their time.

Where are you based, SweetKitty? Why a move to Scotland? How are you settling in? Have you met some new Mums? Anyone else out there who has done a 'big move'?

Eshay · 22/06/2005 21:41

Ha ha ha, Lambie. You don't want to know what Neuk means in Dutch!

sweetkitty · 22/06/2005 22:04

hi lambie I'm on the other side to you in Ayrshire at present, we've had a bit of a nightmare and am staying at my Dad's temporarily. To be honest I haven't checked out any of the toddler groups in this area as we won't be staying here plus this is my home town full of family and friends. After years in London it's weird getting used to people just "dropping in" and seeing family nearly every day.

Our reasons for moving were that we had always wanted to bring our children up in Scotland, we have support up here and with the house prices up here you get more house for your money, down South we would have been lucky to get a 2 bed terrace and it would mean I would have to work, up here we are downsizing but buying a bigger house, the sacrifice is my career which will be put on hold for now.

I'm sure you will find loads to do in your new area as well.

Lambie · 23/06/2005 12:49

Thanks, Sweetkitty. Actually, we are originally from that side: Irvine and Bridge of Weir, but family are mostly in Fife now. All our reasons are the same as yours ? we can get a four-bed house in Fife for what we are selling down here. A slower pace of life, better education, family support as we are hoping to have another baby, and two under four with no family around just seems too daunting. My hat goes off to all those mothers who do it!

Best of luck with your new adventure, and I'm sure you're right and there will be lots to do in Fife. I can't wait to walk by the sea every day...

Go on then, Eshy, what does it mean? I'm dying to know now...

Eshay · 24/06/2005 10:00

Lambie, it means fck, and not in the way of "Oh fck, I've done something wrong" but the literal sense of the word. I wonder if you get many Dutch people visiting East Neuk. It's funny living here though, there are many more instances like that. Often number plates spell out some pretty disgusting 3 letter words and the same goes for London Underground's signs saying LUL. In Dutch that is the word for the bits a man needs to "neuk".

spacecadet · 25/06/2005 14:58

sniff..my little baby is now a one child mass destruction wave, hellbent on exterminating anything in her path, she has 9 extra sharp teeth and enough hair to tie in a tiny pigtail!
she never sleeps and spends half the night standing in her cot blowing raspberries!
she will be one on the 20th july
where has the time gone???

spacecadet · 25/06/2005 14:59

oh eshay you are so naughty!! I dont know words like that!!!

Eshay · 25/06/2005 19:31

It's not me who's naughty! It's big companies not thinking of what things can mean in other languages. And this is just Dutch. I'm sure there are many other examples in other languages. It makes the commute to work more interesting though .

spacecadet · 25/06/2005 20:00

lol eshay!, i bet it does

jessicasmummy · 25/06/2005 20:02

space cadet - i know what you mean! Just suddenly there is nothing stopping jess!

Only just cut her first top tooth, so 3 in total now!

Stands all the time, climbs the stairs, even took a few steps all by herself today - my little baby aint so little anymore!

She is standing in her cot jabbering away and blowing raspberrys as i speak!!!

Xena · 25/06/2005 20:48

Yaheyyyyyy!! Not only us!! 'a one child mass destruction wave, hellbent on exterminating anything in her path' WELL PUT SPACECADET. We seem to have a little biter on our hands as well she has biten DS & DD1 and my nephew today. Although she is so funny too we have a new rug in our back room and she was making the big 2 really giggle this morning as she ran around in circles on it making herself dizzy

spacecadet · 26/06/2005 11:25

i cant beleive that this time last year I was still preg with her!!, she looks like a little girl now, we call her the phantom raspberry blower cos she does it all the time and likes to have raspberry blowing contests with everyone...she wins everytime!!!

spacecadet · 26/06/2005 11:28

oh btw xena, my dd keeps biting too, its getting embarrasing, i had another mnetter to stay a couple of weeksago and she has a lovely little ds who is about 15 months and emily bit him! i could have died on the spot, the shame.

sweetkitty · 27/06/2005 10:57

We'v got a climber now as well, I don't know how many times she has fallen over - can you get baby crach helmets? We took her swimming for the first time this weekend and she loved it.

Sponge · 27/06/2005 14:23

Harry's straight up the stairs now too. Loves to stand and cruise but a way off taking unaided steps I think. We're teaching him to go backwards down stairs which is beginning to work but he's always covered in bumps and bruises.
He loves a good raspberry too which is cute unless he has a mouthful of food.
Loves swimming and water in all forms - bath, paddling pool, even hands in the sink are a huge source of fun to him.
He was a great biter and my arms were covered in bruises but we just kept saying No very firmly and he doesn't do it now.
We seem to be saying no all the time to him at the moment as he's always everywhere he shouldn't be. He just thinks it's hilarious though. Shakes his head and grins like mad .

cricket · 27/06/2005 19:42

Ditto the arms covered in bruises - Sam has just discovered biting mummy....hmm. Keep saying "No" firmly but he doesnt seem to take much notice. I even tried a "Love Mummy, Don't bite Mummy" but not sure about that either!! Demolition man is our nickname for him as he is also hellbent on destruction. No idea where he gets his energy - but he is now sleeping so much longer in his daytime nap (just has one nap now of at least an hour up to 2 and 1/2 hours today!!) - gives me a chance to repair the damage at least!

spacecadet · 27/06/2005 20:01

emily bites feet!!! ewwww.

Sponge · 01/07/2005 23:05

Harry's ill .
High temperature, glands up in his neck, little heart beating nineteen tot he dozen and breathing really fast. He just lies theer whimpering. He doesn't sit up or even move really except to bring his hands up to his head a lot. I think he has a headache. If we pick him up he cries more. Poor little chap, it's awful to see him like this as he's normally such a happy little soul.
He's been to the doctors and all we can really do is dose him up with Calpol and Nurofen and wait till he's better. Fingers crossed it's soon.

spacecadet · 02/07/2005 16:40

oh god, sponge, keep an eye on him, if he seems to be breathing really quickly, take him to casualty, look out for a rash too, sorry if im frightening you, but its best to be on the safe side.

littlerach · 02/07/2005 16:50

Hope he's ok, Sponge.
And that you are.

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 03/07/2005 14:41

aww sponge hope Harry's better soon.

Well I've stopped breastfeeding!! Had stopped the nighttime feed a week and a bit ago then she stopped waking for her 6.30am feed so I have been giving her a beaker of milk at 8 when she gets up. Feel sad but also feel the time is right, I've BF for nearly a year and with number 2 on the way I felt it was too much. Abbie's not bothered she's not asking for milk so thats that.

Apart from that she's doing great, my nerves are shattered with the cruising round furniture and all the falls shes taken.

Sponge · 03/07/2005 22:08

He's in hospital .
When he woke up this morning his neck was really swollen, he was crying much more than he had been and had no interest in his milk or food so we took him to the paediatric A&E.
They were concerned enough to admit him. He's had blood tests etc and an infusion of antibiotics and they're keeping him in for 48 hours for observation.
Dh is with him and I'm home looking after dd.
It was meant to be my birthday party today so not quite the day we'd planned.
Good news is that when I left this evening he seemed a lot better. He was sitting up and playing with a toy and wanting to be crawling whereas he hasn't sat up at all for the last 3 days. Hopefully he's on the mend and I feel much happier that he's being properly looked after.
We're supposed to be going on holiday on Friday so I really hope he's better by then.

Springchicken · 04/07/2005 09:31

Oh Sponge, how awful I hope Harry's doing better today. Please keep us posted.

Must be so frightening

Eshay · 04/07/2005 20:12

Oh no, poor Sponge. Good thing you took him to hospital and good news he was trying to play and crawl a bit. You must be worried sick. Big hugs for the coming wee while. Let us know of any developments as we're thinking of you and dear Harry.

spacecadet · 05/07/2005 16:52

oh gosh you poor things, pleased to hear though that he isa little better, do keep us posted.
