loulou: i'm wishing you luck. have my fingers crossed for you! Thanks for the encouragement. Am quite down about it all. An hour per breast...I'm going bonkers.

Thanks for adding me, star, I'll have a look at it!

CSWS: thank you for the tips! She's sleeping now but I've pumped some, a measly 40ml. Will drink and eat now, then pump again in 1h.

star6 · 20/10/2008 11:57

alexa my baby has been feeding all day yesterday and I thought it slowed a bit to every two hours overnight and now he won't detach... been feeding all morning... falls asleep, I put him down, he cries and makes sucking faces with his mouth and goes for my breast when I pick him up!!! I'm going just as crazy and nipples hurt... suspect I may have thrush??

I can only pump 30ml. Good for you! I just hate the way my nipple gets so large and horrendous looking when I pump I can't leave it on for too long!

Lozza70 · 20/10/2008 12:17

Hi all. Sounds like you are all burning the midnight, and every other time, oil. We are struggling here with lack of sleep due to terrible wind. Poor DS feeds, I'm FF by the way, and then only manages to sleep for about 40 mins before the pain of trapped wind wakes him. It's terrible to see him fighting with it. DH and I have been walking the house with him all day and night. Off to the HV clinic this afternoon to see if they can offer any suggestions to try and help him.

Apart from that he is just lovely and I cannot believe he is 4 weeks old today. Time has just flown. I have added a new pic of Sander at 4 weeks to my profile, [proud mummy ecomotion!]

gorgeous myjob

Lozza70 · 20/10/2008 17:13

She is a cutie myjob as is your wee boy

twinklytoes · 20/10/2008 19:54

lozza - have you tried infacol? have to use before each feed but can be very effective. we've been using it with sam for 4/5days now and its really made a difference - we've actually been able to settle him every evening and he made it to bed upstairs last night.

oh, walking up and downstairs with bubs over shoulder is a good way to clear wind. also found a bath helped sometimes if done between feeds.

loulou33 · 20/10/2008 21:08

Hi all, back from hosp. transfusion took 4 hours and Joe would only settle if lay on me so i had to sit/lounge on a chair for 4 hours, my arse was numb. the nurses were great bringing me water, tea and even some toast!! he's asleep now and i haven't had to give him any formula again so i guess my milk supply has increased enough for now anyway.

lozza - try infacol or dentinox colic drops. the dentinox you can use before or after a feed which is good as the infacol you can only use before so no good once got wind. my hv gave me a great tip last week. Lie baby completely flat for 5 mins (may well be a bit sick but bear with it) then raise very slowly whilst putting a little pressure with flat hand on stomach. you ahve to raise them slowly or won't work - she said imagine a bubble trapped in sloping glass and try to get it to rise by raising glass, iyswim...it works though.

Hope things are going better bf wise with you Alexa star

pistachio - joe gets very windy and frustrated too and crying only makes it worse. he screamed for 10 mins this pm when they put needle in, understandably then spent 3 hours farting in his sleep, nice but good to know the wind is working its way downwards rather than staying trapped, maybe he's outgrwoing his windiness at last. they do say colic is worse for the first 6 weeks....
sorry for marathon post (to go with marathon bf i guess) Sleep well and hope the night is not too bad for us all

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/10/2008 21:20

Lovely pics ladies.

Glad to hear you sounding more positive about bf loulou, and great that the transfusion went well.

Ds up to 8lbs 9oz today, so confirms that all this feeding at least has a point!
Poor dd isn't well though. Hideous cough that has her sobbing in her bed. Dh has gone up to be with her for a bit now, but hope that she will eventually settle on her own, as could do with him to help with ds in the night.

twinkly and loulou thanks for the advice. I'm at the stage where I will try anything. Will definately be trying the laying flat winding thing.

twinkly we had started on infacol but I think we were looking for an instant solution and when he seemed to get worse we thought it may be the infacol. But saw the HV today and she suggested Colief which we have started on this evening. Fingers crossed for more than 40 mins of sleep at a time tonight Sander was 10lb 4oz today so the wind is not impacting on his growth in any way!

star6 · 21/10/2008 00:33

loulou sorry for silly question but do you mean lie flat on tummy or back?

I had a very hot red lump in right breast today, so went to gp and she gave me antibiotics... it hurts more than i can explain andcant even massage it out like other lumps. Now feeling achy all over (like in first week post birth) and temperature has risen a bit. Feel like ive been hit by a truck.

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/10/2008 07:51

Did she say it was mastitis star? It sounds like it. Ouch. My hv reminded me yesterday to watch out for thrush with me being on antibiotics, so the same will apply to you. Look out for a white tongue in ds, or a bright red nappy rash that doesn't clear with sudocrem/metanium. I have a suspicion that ds' bright red rash last night and this morn might mean that he has it already .

loulou33 · 21/10/2008 10:37

Morning all,

Star lie on his back, but i have discovered that putting Joe on his tummy makes him fart with the effort so that may be just as good a way to get rid of wind. Joe was up till 12.30 last night and was starving all the time - really tiring...he's been a bit gurney this morning so off for a walk to settle him hopefully.

Hope you're feeling better Star but it does sound like mastitis - rest up and drink plenty of fluids

Lozza you have to give each rememdy at least 3 or 4 days as they take time to build up in the systme beofre they really start working. I know you're desparate (been there twice now) but chopping and changin remedies might not be the answer you're looking for - have you got a sling to carry baby in?? Mine still hasn't arrived yet but others say they are a god send for colicky babies. Could you get hold of one fo those automatic swinging chairs/rocker things - apparently they are good too. I never got one as too expensive but my best friend swore by hers for settling her colicky dd.

star6 · 21/10/2008 10:45

yes she said mastitis but that I caught it in good time. a/bs are already making me feel better... thank goodness!
funny, csws I went in suspecting thrush because nipples are pink and itchy but dr didnt even entertain that idea because wanted to focus on the red hot lump on my breast instead.

my baby writhes around a bit when he feeds if he's pooing... stretches nipple and is really sore... his head extends back really strongly and whole body tight... do yours do this?

heather1980 · 21/10/2008 13:01

afternoon all, alex is feeding like a demon atm, he's 5 days now and the mw came to do his heel prick test and weigh him, and he's gained 5oz!!! i was expecting a loss, so he's 9lb 10oz now.
totally forgot how knackering sleeplessness is, he sleeps 11-3 and then wakes 2 or 3 times until 8am and takes both breasts at each feed, i feel like a dairy.....moo.

loulou33 · 21/10/2008 14:49

yes star but usually cos he's got wind and so he wriggles cos its uncomfortable.

Joe's gained another 8 oz in 5 days _ that's 4lbs in 5 weeks, so something must be going in then. he's been awake all morning and has just gone to sleep on me, i've out him down but is suspect he'll wake again in a minute

Yes, dd is 2.8, and dry both day and night until ds arrived. Even put her in a pull up last night, though that was partly because she has horrible cough, and I thought that she might wee a little whilst coughing.

1sttimer80 · 21/10/2008 20:11

Hi All,

It's me back again! sorry I sort of disappeared off the screen once LO one was born!

You may recall DS had dilated kidneys, so they kept us in hospital to do an extra scan at 3 days. Unfortunately the kidneys hadn't drained so they put him on antibiotics straight away. Then organised a MCUG (Micturating cystogram) that was today where they put a dye up little one's boy parts using a cathetar and take a series of xrays to see if the urine is flowing back up towards the kidneys. If this was the case then there could be damage to the kidneys.

Good news is no reflux, and things seem normal so now just have to wait until his kidneys drain naturally. Only drawback is having to force these horrible tasting antibiotics down him evry day. It's heartbreaking because it's so important he takes it, but sometimes he just gargles it back out.

Other than that, DS is sleeping and feeding on and off. He won't latch on so have had to formula feed and express, but trying different things to get him to latch on.

Does anyone find their lo falls asleep during feeds?

star6 · 21/10/2008 20:36

1sttimer mine is dozing at breast right now!!

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/10/2008 20:55

It's very common 1sttimer. Now I try to do a nappy change part way through to wake him up if needs be.

Good news about his kidneys . Sorry to hear about the antibiotics. We still struggle getting dd to take medicine even now! She got some antibiotics this evening for an ear infection, and she's only had slightly more than the floor so far!
