it's because the digestive system isn't developed enough to cope with 'food' until 5-6 months old. giving food early can result in food allergies and digestive problems.

Aubergenie · 03/12/2008 13:00

Nicewarmslippers - DS is 8 weeks old and 11lb. His dad gives him a bath about 7 then he goes to sleep either on us or in his moses basket in the front room with us. Then last night he went to bed with me at about 10.30 and fed to sleep, then slept till about 12.30 fed, woke again at 4 something, fed, and then again at 7 something for another feed. I'm co-sleeping and I read somewhere that they do wake more often for a feed in that case. The only time he ever cries during he night is if I don't get my boob in his mouth quick enough, but then I nod off while I'm feeding so it's not too much of a hardship. I am looking forward to him getting a bit bigger and sleeping longer though, although I daresay poor CSWS would kill for a night like that so I really can't complain. I really feel for you CSWS it must be a living nightmare at the moment.

Hope your review goes well today Honeymoonmummy

DS had his jabs today, one in each buttock, poor fella. They gave me a prescription for some Calpol so I've given him some and he's sleeping in the sling now, so fingers crossed they don't affect him too badly.

Jenwa, I know that our parents did lots of things that are now advised against as new research comes to light. As well as being difficult to digest, isn't there a choking risk though when they're that young?

Hi everyone. We've been away down to London for the last week so just spent about 45 mins catching up. Thought I'd start posting before I've finished reading everything because DS is prob going to wake soon.

Star hope first day back was ok - or is it next week? confused about weeks! Bet you'll be having lots of lovely cuddles with Q as soon as you are done.

Thanks for tips re positions for sleeping. I do feed DD propped on my arm and then sort of curl round her but last night she slept in her moses basket - fanfare please!! Not thinking that it's anything but a one off but it was lovey to be able to stretch out.
DD only 4 weeks at moment and we don't get a check til 8 weeks up here so we've still got a while. I think I'm going to have to get a coil this time as mini pill last time didn't agree with me. Once my period came back, it never stopped until I stopped taking the pill. Still sore down there and reaallly sore when pooing (soory TMI) so no way is DH getting any yet.
Enjoying reading about slings as think I might get one. DD loves to be cuddled so much and find that the Babybjorn is too structured. Keep telling me which ones you like best and why...GWMH we put DS into his own room from about 4 months which I know is earlier than guidelins but it was because he was just so noisy. We did put him for naps in there first with the idea that it would get him used to it.
Myjob glad you had a good night out. Not sure when we'll manage it but would be nice if before Christmas!
Right - do I go and see if DS is ok seeing as I put him to bed at about 11.45? He usually has about 2 hours. I bet if i open the door, he'll wake up though.....

anythingbutpink · 03/12/2008 15:01

You can't overfeed a breastfed baby! Some wise person once said - and I think its true! So always take weigh-ins with a pinch of salt in either direction.
Don't worry about feeding to sleep in the early weeks and months - whatever works. I did with ds - and he started sleeping through the moment we weaned... at 14 months

Sorry star I wasn't trying to imply that what you (and millions of others) are doing is in any way wrong. Just that my own axieties would stop me from putting her on front.

jenwa · 03/12/2008 15:49

thank you re info re digestive probs. and allergies, although i dont understand how they can get allergies from rice when surely they are more likely to get allergies from breast milk depending on what mother eaten?

star6 · 03/12/2008 16:47

I go back to work tomorrow... been crying off and on all day like a ridiculous person... Q has been SLEEPING ALL DAY. I'm not kidding. He woke up for his hip scan... screamed through it. SLept through feeds and I just fed him again and he's sleeping AGAIN. I CAN'T WAKE HIM UP!! He'll wake then drowse back to sleep!! Does this mean I'll be up ALL NIGHT???????? Ohhhhhhhhhhh please say no!!! And someone please tell me there's nothing wrong with him. Oh, he also woke for a nappy change... he hasn't been awake for more than 15 minutes at a time all day long. I went in to watch an assembly my class was doing this morning and he slept through the whole thing! clapping and microphones and ALL! I'm actually really worried. Can anyone reassure me? An emotional wreck about tomorrow as well... not helping!

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/12/2008 19:26

Jenwa - most food doesn't pass in a recognisable format through breast milk, and certainly not in a state which requires the baby's gut to digest it, whereas giving baby food directly does, hence it is more likely to damage the sensitive gut lining.

star - good luck for tomorrow. Only 2 days til the weekend .

Have ordered an Amby nest in desperation for ds. Will be delivered tomorrow. Anyone else using one?

Star DS is propbably just having a sleepy day. If you have been in & out then the motion will keep him drowsy. Good luck tomorrow. It is hard going back to work but you can get loads of cuddles when you get home

DS had his jabs today, he is really grumpy. Keeps crying as if he is in loads of pain. I am telling myself better than getting the nasty virus. He has filled his nappy for the 6 time today, off to change.

ronshar · 03/12/2008 21:15

Myjob, those charts are a GUIDE, they were to measure the average weight of formula fed babies. There was talk a few years ago of reworking the charts so one for FF & one for BF babies. I guess not enough money to do it yet. Also all babies grow at diff rates.
My 2 DDs couldnt be more diff. Eldest was in 2-3 size clothes at 12 months & DD2 has only just moved out of 2-3 and she is 4.
Unless they can tell you your baby is not growing then dont feel pressured to give FF.

Aubergenie · 03/12/2008 21:34

Star - I feel for you having to go back to work. Good luck tomorrow. I hope it's not too hard for you. Your class are going to be so excited to see you again. As CSWS says, only 2 days till the weekend. ANd then not too long till the holidays.

CSWS - I saw your other thread about the Amby. Fingers crossed it helps. I feel quite excited on your behalf. Keep us posted won't you!

Myjob Sorry you're feeling so down. Has anyone actually said anything about N's growth or are you just worried that they will?

Maybe only go to clinic 2-3 weeks. Any weight gain will be more noticable. I have only been once so far! No one has said anything yet. To be honest I think HV are more concerned with obesity now. I DS all ok for age now? If he is then congratulate yoursefl for doing a bloody good job once already and carry on as you are.

Off to bed I think it is going to be a long one

heather1980 · 04/12/2008 01:16

you do know they can't make you go to the clinic, and you don't have to see the hv don't you? it's not a legal requirement, even if they make it seem like it is. alex is 7 weeks and has never been. we're going next week, but only coz he has his 6-8 week checkup.

i had comments about dd's weight when she was 5 months and i've never been back since. they made comments about my bf her and she 'needed' to be put on formula. she's 2.1 now and still petite. she's in 18-24 month clothes and she only went in them about 6 weeks ago. i believe they are bringing in ff and bf weight charts next year sometime.

nicewarmslippers · 04/12/2008 05:28

Mygoodness star going back to work-terrible. I'll be thinking of you.

You'll all hate me. Following yesterday's desperate post, ds slept from 10 till 5! And only woke at 5 cause I woke him as was bursting. Ubnfortnately he then wouldn't feed and is now frumpy in baby carrier, will try again after expressing a bit in case thats it (am sterilising the stuff now)

on the subject of weight gain: why are we so obsessed with weight gain! Is there much evidence for an association between gain and outcome in terms of healthy happy children?

star6 · 04/12/2008 05:43

ha! true... im 5ft 2 in 110lbs i wonder where i would be on a "chart"! and im just as healthy and happy as afriend who is 5ft 9in 140lb!

nicewarmslippers · 04/12/2008 07:05

star why are you on mumsnet at 5 40 am? Just interessted? Or are you in america? is that why you have to go back to work so fast?

CantSleepWontSleep · 04/12/2008 07:51

Let's not dwell on these new charts ladies. They are available on the internet, but won't be helpful to myjob, as bf babies generally gain weight quicker in the early weeks than ff.

Good luck star.

Better night here thankfully. DS even did 3 hours not attached to me!

Realised that I am out this morning, and will be v pissed off if they try to deliver the Amby whilst I'm not here!

Hi all.

Star I hope today goes ok, i can't imagine having to go to work this early. DD is a day younger than your DS but he does share a birthday with my DS! He sounds like he is doing great, DD was nearly 3lbs heavier at birth but your DS has nearly caught up, she is 12lbs now. The pics are gorgeous.

I really hope the nest helps CSWS. I really feel for you. I have a 2 year old as well and find it really difficult with the 2. I hope you get some sleep soon.

Try not to worry too much myjob, we are all different. I mentioned to the doctor at my 6 week check that DD is putting on weight much better than DS was at this age and that I gave DS a bottle because I was worried. The doctor said that the charts are rubbish as they are for FF babys so they shouldn't use them for BF babies. I'm sure if there was a problem you would know.

I have to take DD for her hearing test this morning, it will be the first time she has entered a hospital! Then this afternoon I'm having the implant put in and tomorrow DD has her first set of injections and DS has his MMR (a year late) hopefully they will be ok.

My 2.2yo decided to learn 4 new words this week taking his grand total up to 10 words I'm so proud of him and it's so nice to hear him saying fishie all the time

purpleflower · 04/12/2008 08:10

Sorry CSWS I was writing my epic post while you posted about the charts. I was just going by what my doctor told me.

Glad you had a better night.

Yay for fab reassuring hv myjob, and for rash not being serious.

Amby arrived seconds before I went out this morning . Dh comes home this evening so will get him to assemble it then.

Unfortunately the friends we were supposed to be seeing this afternoon double booked themselves, so although we're seeing them tomorrow afternoon instead, we now have nothing on for today. Might let dd do some sticking, but she is very messy, and it will be hard to clean up with no hands, as well as ds prob getting bored and moany whilst we do it. Why does everything have to be so difficult?!
