4andnotout how long are you going on one boob? If Poppy doesn't do 30 mins on one boob I offer her the same one. The HV seemed to be happy with that.

Honeymoonmummy · 26/11/2008 12:11

Star, thanks for the offer but I'd rather get one new thanks, I'm a bit funny/ OCD about things like that.
I ordered my new sling, a Slingeasy, can't wait for it to come now!!
I had to take Poppy into the bathroom for the first time today and I am really constipated from the iron tablets since birth and have piles so its really painful. She was screaming, probably because of the smell
I hate constipation.

star6 · 26/11/2008 14:10

honrymoonmummy i understand im the same! but some people arent bothered

csws sorry to hear sleep situation hasnt improved for you

myjob are you crazy??? I hope you survive today....

I got my sling!!!! I love it and ds so cozy in it. just went shopping for groceries in it and got lots of interesting looks but he loves it! I got it from bigmama slings the peanut shell. black fleece. It's so easy.

ajm200 · 26/11/2008 14:37

Sorry so many of you are still poorly. Hope things improve soon. Glad you all love your slings, they are great aren't they. CSWS hope you get some sleep soon

Been up since 1am as Amelia has been crying pretty much none stop since about 10pm so I'm absolutely dead on my feet. She crys herself to sleep then wakes screaming a few minutes later. She's struggling to feed and then coughs so hard that she brings most of it back up again. Took her to the Dr again and he said she is over the flu but has secondary infections in both ears and her throat is very inflamed. If she'd found her voice by now, she'd have lost it again today I feel so sorry for her but there is nothing they can do for her, just got to keep feeding and comforting her.

It's such a shame as she smiled for the first time yesterday and today is so miserable.

Honeymoonmummy · 26/11/2008 16:09

Wish I'd got the peanut sling now

sorry to hear that AJM, but yay re her smiling!!

Honeymoonmummy · 26/11/2008 16:10

Oh and Amelia was on my name shortlist too...

star6 · 26/11/2008 16:17

Im sure you'll love the sling you ordered honeymoonmummy They all look cozy. when i opened it, it looked like a fleece coat with no arms or neck... I was like, I paid £30 for this? then I put it on and it's fab. even has a littlepocket and hook. I hooked my keys on and put wallet in the pocket.... no purse! wish i had gotten it sooner

myjob you should be proud of yourself i bet the kids had a whale of a time it certainly sounds fun!
I bathed dd4 with me and let her feed in there and it certainly worked! She is now sleepily suckling and much calmer.
I have decided to sell my sling as dd4 wont lie in it. I think a close sling would be better so will save some pennies up.

star6 · 26/11/2008 20:55

myjob - thrush? My nipples feel like that for other reasons but thrush has made them even more sensitive. If it is thrush, get cream and oral tablet if you can... oral tablet very worth it... but only if they give you enough! They have cut me off and it's returning... yuck.
I am very proud of you for coping today. Well done you! That sounds a bit much like a day at work to me... except without the babies of course!

This sling is so great I think I could teach and carry him around in it all day! - worth asking the head, I wonder...wishful!

I'm buying "silverettes" to hopefully ease and heal cracks. Found advice on bf thread. anyone here tried them? I'll do anything at this point!

myjob - ds had no white patches in his mouth either. It can be just on the mother, not on the baby or vice versa.
Do you have any deep breast pain or are your nipples more pink than usual or a bit shiny after a feed? DS has had no thrush, it's only been on me the whole time. worth getting checked because it you leave it too long, it just hurts more!
you have my respect for wanting to be a mw! I would never ever be able to do that. even after going through it, childbirth still terrifies me... probably more so now. But it would be lovely to see all of those babies at the end... my luck I'd be on all the shifts where I never made it to the end, though - lol

4andnotout · 26/11/2008 21:14

Myjob it is a murrions pouch sling so im not sure if i can carry her in it like that, i havent looked at the instructions properly yet though!

Evening everyone.
I hope all the poorly babies are getting better.
And poor you CSWS, you are really going through it. Have you tried the Menthol Crystals for both you and Duncan? Put the bowl in the bath room with you and it should help to loosen up your sinus passages.
I have suffered with my sinus' for years. I had an operation last year to clean them out but I can feel it building up again Lovely.
I just dont seem to find any time to get on the computer. I cant sit in the kitchen as it is really cold out there, so I have to wait until DH has finished with the laptop. Rubbish.

We seem to be getting there with William. He will take a bottle from DH and even my sister. Yipee. I can leave the house. He will almost settle himself to sleep. Not every time though and I do have to go back a few times to pick him up for a lovely cuddle and put him down again.
I could do with more sleep mind you. DS just loves to wake up between 2-3am and then again at 5. He isnt even very hungry just has a snack and goes back to sleep. Although the 5am is often a wind problem he just cant sem to get up his wind. Poor baby goes all red in the face and his whole body goes rigid.

I have to confess that the secret to getting DS to settle is a (whisper) dummy. I have always hated them but my DH told me I was being silly and that surely I cant sleep evry night with my finger in DS mouth. I realised he had a valid point. Also DS has a really hard suck and my finger was getting sore.
Does anyone else use a dummy? Have I caved in too easily and resorted to a dummy for me rather than DS. I still feel bad when I give it to him. But not at 4am I cant put it in fast enough then.

4andnotout · 26/11/2008 22:24

ronshar dd4 has a dummy if im out with her in her pram and she wants feeding immediately, she wont have one in at any other time though and starts gagging..im not sure what thats all about! All 3 of my other dd's have had dummies, at the end of the day i just think she wont walk up the aisle with one in so whats the point in worrying about it!

ronshar · 26/11/2008 22:47

You are right I know.
I think it is more to do with me worrying about their teeth. I had quite goofy (for want of a better word) front teeth until a lovely orthodontist fixed them for me. I dont want to make a potential problem worse. I will get over it I'm sure. Especially as it is helping me get more sleep.
I should be asleep now as DS is snuggled up in his basket. Pesky Mumsnet. It has got me back in its grip again

CantSleepWontSleep · 26/11/2008 23:12

Hello ronshar . Funnily enough I was going to ask tonight whether anyone was using a dummy or not (didn't have a hand free to type, but having been in bed an hour I've just got back up as can't sleep for coughing). I'm neither pro nor anti dummy (except for older children who use them all day long), but dd would never take one, so it became a non issue for us, and my boob became her dummy for life . We've tried ds with a dummy a few times over the last week or so, but he doesn't seem to want one either. How do you get them to take them?!

I might have misled you re my illness ronshar (and others), as I said that I thought it was turning into sinusitis, and then didn't clarify that it hadn't. I still have a cold and slightly blocked but runny nose (how do they manage to be both at once?!), but the problem is my chest/cough. It is so severe that I cough almost constantly when lying down, and it then makes my throat hurt, and my tummy/sides ache too. The antibiotics have (as usual) given me an upset tummy too, just in case I hadn't found enough to moan about!

On a positive note though, dd's new bedroom is now finished and ready for furnishing. Little pic on my profile that we took for her 'show and tell' at school today. She told them that it was her new bedroom and that her baby brother was going to have her old room. We hadn't broached that with her, so were really pleased that she mentioned it quite happily herself .

All your talk of painful nipples and feeds has reminded me of the similar pain that I had early on in my pregnancy, when I was feeding dd. Makes me wince for you all ladies, and thankful that that's at least one problem that I don't have now.

I do seem to have had a very sudden and very severe dip in supply over the last day or two, which is worrying me slightly. Not because I don't think I can get it back, but because it probably means a few extra sleepless nights, and I don't know exactly what's caused it.

I did manage to make it out to do something for myself today, and got my hair cut. Dh came with me so that he could carry ds around for the 45 mins that I was in there, before we then went to pick up dd.

myjob - sadly there's no-one who can take the dc for the 'hours between feeds' because there aren't hours between feeds for us. He still feeds at least every couple of hours day and night, with only an occasional exception, which can't be predicted. Not really anyone to take him anyway. In-laws are too old to cart him about in a carrier, and he won't go in a pushchair, and if they stayed in the house with him then I'd hear his crying and wouldn't settle. That's aside from the fact that they'd expect tea and chat if they came over .

Right, ds just woken (dh was holding him), so better go do another feed. Apols for epic post!

star6 · 27/11/2008 05:43

csws I hope ds decides to have a nice long sleep today and give you a little rest!! Poor you

I give ds a "dummy" when he's fed loads and just wants to suck. He doesn't like to take it... I just move it around in his mouth a bit and he eventually sucks on it... BUT if he's actually hungry and doesn't just want to suck, he'll keep opening his mouth wide (wider than the dummy) and I know he needs to eat more. You can get orthodontic ones. That's what we use. I'd rather that than the thumb. My sister is 37 years old and STILL sucks her thumb . No way my child will be thumb sucking!

star6 · 27/11/2008 05:48

csws how do you hold on to ds in a bath to feed him... doesn't he slip around? i feel like we can barely keep ds from slipping out of our hands in the baby bath! Prob more psychological, though

star6 · 27/11/2008 07:36

can i put vaseline on baby's lips? they are so dry!!!

CantSleepWontSleep · 27/11/2008 09:34

I would think that you can star, but olive oil is a less synthetic product, so I'd choose that over vaseline.

Ds actually slept well last night, but I couldn't sleep for coughing. Managed no more than 2.5hrs . Won't matter if he sleeps well during the day today star, as I have dd with me all day today too.

I have a japanese soaking tub star, so I sit in my bath (tis great - water can come up to my shoulders), which makes holding ds nice and easy. I either hold him tummy to tummy for cuddles, across my lap for feeding (if not too deep!), or with his head and back a bit supported so that he can lay back and kick his legs about.

OP posts:
star6 · 27/11/2008 09:38

i admire your strength csws!
olive oil... didnt think of that, thanks!
meant to ask... when feeding laying on side... do you put your arm under his head/neck or just lie him flat on his side on the bed? Im finding it difficult to get mt nipple down to him unless i put my arm under him, but then need to move it after, which wakes him.

ronshar · 27/11/2008 09:42

CSWS, sorry love I read back and you did say it had moved to your chest. My fault.
It sounds like you are just completely run down. If you are into alternative remedies it might be worth loading up on rescue remedy.(sp)

I found I had to hold the dummy in for a little bit until DS could get the hang of it. He sucks so hard it sometimes leaves a mark round his face. Keep trying it could be your key to more sleep.

Star vaseline should be fine. Just a little bit.
