Oh Hedgehog - about the play gym!

Essie - I thing 5gomad could be on holiday, they were going somewhere lovely in November but I don't remember where.

Thanks Neenz, I might try the sleeping bag idea, but putting him at the top of the cot helped today I think.

I should really go to bed but it would be good to see at least one result in before I go.

Essie3 · 04/11/2008 23:14

Hedgehog COCOA?! Get a grip, it needs to be strongly alcoholic!
Have one as well - it cures all kinds of bad mumminess. Sorry to hear about the play gym. (I melted some building bricks by sterilising them. I think there's a lesson here...don't be clean? )

debinaustria · 05/11/2008 06:04

Great result for America!

spongebrainbigpants · 05/11/2008 07:09

WayHay!!!! Go Obama!

Back to more mundane things, sorry to hear about the play gym - I melted Alex's favourite teething ring in the steriliser too . Think Essie's right - need to be dirtier! (does that sound dodgy?!!)

bitofadramaqueen · 05/11/2008 07:28

Morning all. Am so glad someone mentioned that P&P is makecakes. I was wondering who this new person was who'd appeared in my absence

Sorry about gym HH. I'm still recovering from the trauma of shrinking a sleeveless cardi thing that cost about £50 in the washing machine last week. Was in a hurry and forgot to check instructions. Inconsolable because largely through my own fault I'm still about 2-3 sizes bigger than my normal weight and very little clothes fit me. Anyone else still got a long way to go? I really need to get some serious exercise in. My thighs are awfully thunderous . S's christening soon and no idea what to wear.

Crikey, forgotten everyone else's posts now. Sorry!

spongebrainbigpants · 05/11/2008 07:42

BDQ, can totally sympathise on the weight - have four stone to go .

Too depressing for words . . . .

aberdeenhiker · 05/11/2008 08:04

thanks for all the good wishes about the house! I feel very lucky we live somewhere where things are almost affordable too, I had dinner with a close friend who's up for work from London - things are still so expensive there. My head was all full of houses last night though...

I put on a dress to go out to dinner and came downstairs and DS1 said "Oohh! Mummy Pretty! which was so lovely. It did make me thing I should dress a bit nicer on a daily basis though.

sponge i loved your rant And I read a paper in a medical journal that suggested that the protection from allegies applies if you wean after 17 weeks as by then the gut is fully healed. The reason to wait until 26 weeks is because of the risk of gastrointestinal infections - so I'm sterilizing like mad! If you want to wean you could start with foods that are known to be non-allergenic (what I'm doing) like rice cereal, carrots etc. and stay away from and other grains (the gluten can be a problem), potatoes, tomatoes, and anything like a legume. Never heard of anyone allergic to carrots, although my two year old would have me believe he is

Amber and whinegums - Thank you I'm glad I'm not alone but sorry you're up with me in the nights!

Essie I've never bothered to unclear Fraser's nose and he's got a cold. Aside from difficulty feeding, it doesn't seem to bother him. You can definitely use saline drops though to loosen stuff up and a snot-remover syringe if you'd like. I tried it with DS1 when he was a baby - am more lazy this time.

hedgehog oh no! that's too bad about the playgym. That's not a bad mummy thing, but a oh no mummy needs some chocolate to make her feel better thing!

BDQ I was doing great on my weight loss but have somehow gained half a stone last month on vacation. I'm going to be a good girl and start dieting today....

Parofleurmapu · 05/11/2008 08:30

Morning all

Didnt come on last night as we watched Top Gear Very funny and thhen i had an early night.

Well, last night we made sure she was down and asleep by 7.30pm she slept right through DF with DP (but did eat) and woke at 3am!!! (arrggh) BUT she only woke 5 times from then til 7am! much better than the usual 15 or so!!

Thanks PandP for your help, Think we will try the first option today make tea later and then see if she will feed again at 6.30pm then off to bed at 7pm when Dp gets in. Ill let you know! Today is all different anyhow cause she goes to nursery at 10 til 12 so we will see

Debs and Whinegums - I have those dummies for the same reason as winegums and dont worry I never sterilise her dummies havent since birth if they go on floor they go in my mouth then in hers!!! i reckon there is more germs on her hands etc!

On melting things i melted a teething ring too!! thought they werent meant to resist being steriilised

BDQ Although i lost lots of weight at beginning and am down from pre pregnancy size i still have work to do I think i own one pair of trousers that actually fit me!!

Essie- re saline drops you drop a few in his nose lying on your arm wait a bit (for the cries to subside!!) and then i sit Fleur up and use the nasal aspirator She hates it but it does help I do it with DP though as she squirms and screams like mad

Well off to rehab!!!(thats sounds funny!i sound like a famous celeb, maybe i am???!!) Dont talk too much while im out!!!

debinaustria · 05/11/2008 08:52

Glad your night was a little better Paro, Ethan was better too.

I'm with you on needing to lose weight girls and have just joined Ernest and someone else on a thread to offer each other support. I need to stop snacking, I am terrible. I was beginning to think I was the only one out of all of us who was still only fitting in a few clothes, nice to know I'm not. Would like to lose some weight for my Birthday and Christmas.

hedgehog1979 · 05/11/2008 08:53

morning all,

Feeling better in the cold light of day as we do have other playmats, but they don't have things to bat at. Although did have a look on ebay and found this which I might bid for.

Isaac is now having to sit in his bouncy chair with a bar with dangly toys, but he won't sleep in that whereas he will on the floor in the gym [grr]

I am glad I am not the only one who has melted things as well. Feel slightly better as it was second hand anyway, would have been very annoyed if it was new.

Have been looking at maclarens now as well - think we will have to go for a techno as we need a height adjustable handle so keeping watch on ebay for that as well. Maybe I should allow Isaac to become and ebay orphan (like a football widow I suppose)

I feel slightly proud today as our babies are living in a ground breaking time due to the Obama win, like we did with Maggie Thatcher.
paro enjoy rehab, maybe you are a famous sleb, although I can't currently think of any who live in your part of the world!!

Off to brave Tesco again later, they have my one downfall.....STARBUCKS....so might have to join paro in rehab once I go back to work

Upsidedowncake · 05/11/2008 09:21

Quick good morning to everyone, you have been very busy.

My PIL were invited to Obama's speech at Grant Park in Chicago but didn't go as it would have been a late night and they haven't been a hundred percent well lately. Wish we were in Chicago as I would have loved to have gone! C and D could have been there to watch history being made.

Aberdeen, have you sold your house then?

Am with you all on the weight thing ... and guess what, I saw some creme eggs in the newsagent yesterday ...

D has her last injections today.

Amberc · 05/11/2008 10:41

BDQ - I am 2 stne heavier than pre birth and have done bugger all to shift it except join weightwatchers and then never ctually weigh myslef or do the diet! What a waste of money!! I keep meeting people for coffee and then end up having a cake. Oops. Remember though that we have all increased muscle and that's heavier!

Essie - we used saline drops all the time when Luke was really little. You put them in each nostril (2 drops each) and they liquify the bogies so that you can either suck them out with a nasal aspirator or let him sniff them away. Also I raised the head end of his cot and used a Vicks vaporiser with Olbas oil. Really worked well I must say that Vicks thing but costs about £25. We have ghot plenty of use out of it though.

Don't know owt about politics but Obama is being treated as the second coming - hope he lives up to it for his sake. I also did say to uke rthis morning that this was a very significant historical moment - the first black american president - could have been the first female american president so either way !

Amberc · 05/11/2008 10:46

PS HMS Illustrious docked right outside my front room today. This means lots of naval types in Greenwich. It does make a lot of noise though!

katyjo · 05/11/2008 10:51

UDC LOL I had totally forgotten about the creme eggs, seems like a long time ago now! You have certainly made me smile this morning.

Essie3 · 05/11/2008 10:52

All very historic - I went all teary when I heard the news. Mind you, I go all teary at everything these days. (Full on wailing yesterday though because there was that awful awful tragic funeral in Llandudno - v. close to where I live. DH cried a bit too.)

These vaporisers - Boots? And HH is yours the same as Amber's?

Definitely shunning UDC for mentioning those creme eggs. Don't you dare mention where exactly!

DH has very stupidly said he'll sponsor me £1 per cm of knitting. He knows nothing about knitting! It's already £5 to the Children's Society! (Knitters - this is what I'm doing.

Essie, newsagent on the corner of Wimbledon and STanden roads in Southfields. But yuo're in Wales at the moment, aren't you ...

pureeandpearls · 05/11/2008 11:23

Essie- I have the Tixylix vaporiser from Boots, which is battery operated, which I can recommend.

Morning all- dashng off for training session- ugggh- but will check in later.

xx

ThePenguinProject · 05/11/2008 11:56

Wow - we are so chatty on here I can't keep up. Sorry to all those I will undoubtedly ignore. This is gonna be a huge post...

Aarrgghh. Meant to be going to see 007 today but Ryder played up a bit. Then decided to meet other Mums for coffee instead but spent 30 mins! trying to work out how to add cosytoes to my buggy. Looks like it may be a quiet day in today.

Sponge - I am out of my seat applauding your rant. Although I am planning to wait until 26 weeks that is due to pure laziness and the hope that some of you guys will have it completely figured out by then so I can just copy you. How all babies can be deemed ready at the same age is beyond me, just look at the difference in sizes of our babies already....(AliP's Peter and Essie's Iestyn spring to mind, but only because I've seen them both in RL)....they clearly grow and develop at different rates.

Also enjoyed your lecture Essie, but will this be in the end of term exam?

I watched some of top gear but somehow missed the prostitutes comment - off to check the daily mail website....As much as I hate the DM and I do, I love their femail site for a daily fix of complete and utter Heat style celeb gossip. I claim to be an intelligent woman, but can't resist a bit of celeb trash...not sure why i felt the need to share that, bit of a confess your sins moment I think.

I love the glow in the dark dummies! I don't think we need them, but I want them. If R wakes up in the night, a dummy is not enough, boob and only boob will suffice. He's getting funny about taking the bottle which is worrying me as I'm going back to work soon....although part of me thinks that DH just isn't patient enough with the bottle, he fusses on the boob too, but gets there eventually.

Ryder sleeps anywhere during the day - he is currently crashed out on his side on his mat. He would get far too tangled in anything other than a grobag (and today it's warm enough not to even need that) because he thrashes around and often rolls onto his front before he settles himself. He seems started to like sleeping on his front which terrifies me from a SIDS point of view. And this may be a silly question, but when does the SIDS risk become less of a risk, 6 months? A year? 2 years?

Essie - AliP recommended saline drops to me and yes they do work. Get them from your local chemist though, boots v expensive for a bit of salt water. Agree with Amber re the raised end of cot thing too.

BTW did everyone see this thread? V funny.

ThePenguinProject · 05/11/2008 12:03

Sponge & BDQ - I'm with you both on the far way to go before I'm happy with my weight again...altho actually even when I've been quite skinny I don't think I've ever been happy with my weight! Went in for a back to work chat yesterday, wearing maternity trousers! Might go find the thread you mentioned Deb, 2 stone to go to get me to pre preg weight.

AHiker - What a lovely comment from your DS1.

If any of the London Ladies want to come to rehab with me they serve great pizza (garlic overload!), see here. HH - My Starbucks/Costa addiction was re-activated when I went back to work yesterday as we really lucky and have subsidised outlets of both.

UDC - LOL at creme eggs, that seems so long ago now.

Re: Obama - did anyone else think his speech sounded very Martin Luther King - ish? "We may not get there in one term...etc" It was a fantastic acceptance speech, poor guy has a hell of a lot to live up to tho. McCain's defeat speech was good too.

I was very interested in the landslide thing, I know they vote in electoral colleges, but if you look purely at the number of votes counted so far, Obama got 52%, but McCain got 46% which is not anywhere near as damning as the electoral colleges suggest...And Kenyans are getting a national holiday!

PiggyPenguin · 05/11/2008 12:40

Aberdeenhiker - sleep through? ha ha ha. Ha ha. And just for good measure, ha ha ha. Part of the issue with Jamie only feeding when asleep is that he doesn't get enough during the day (as awake) so makes up for it during the night. Last night he went to bed at 8.15 and was up at 9, 10.30, 1.00, 3,00 5.00 6.30 and finally 8.00. Sometimes it is only 4 times a night though...

aberdeenhiker · 05/11/2008 12:51

PP SIDS risk is worst between 2-4 months and drops off considerably at 4 months. Once they can roll over the risk decreases considerably too I think so don't worry!

DS1 is sitting on the potty trying his hardest to do a poo because I've told him he gets a present (wrapped in view) once he does. Poor wee guy! This is his normal time to poo but what if he's just a bit constipated today?

sybilvimes am sending you oodles of sympathy. Crikey! I thought I was exhausted but I'm getting decent sleep with Fraser only up once between 8 and 3! I will not complain again.

aberdeenhiker · 05/11/2008 13:06

oops! PP that should say drops off at 6 months...

PiggyPenguin · 05/11/2008 13:07

Aberdeenhiker -no, complain at will! That's what we are all here for. We all get to complain, that's the whole point.

spongebrainbigpants · 05/11/2008 13:51

P&P, thanks for the tips. We give him his last feed at 7pm. Have tried to dream feed him but it just pushes his night time waking back to 4am rather than 3am - don't know which is worse!

Essie, well done on the knitting - will your dh sponsor me £1 a cm too? I could probably bankrupt him though the speed I knit!!

AH, thanks for the info on weaning. Still waiting a little while longer, partly cos of the hassle factor tbh! (bad mummy emoticon again!)

PP, I did see that thread - hilarious! Apparently it was some sarcastic response to a ff/bf debate - but couldn't find the original thread!

spongebrainbigpants · 05/11/2008 13:57

Oh, btw, started to read my BLW book today - apparently it was common to wean babies from the breast at 8/9 mths in the early 20th century but as wet nursing became less popular doctors began to interfere more and more in bf and women were advised not to demand feed their babies, their milk supply began to dry up which of course affected the health of their babies, formula feeds were nowhere near as good as they are now so affected the babies adversely too, so the only answer was solids.

Right, that's your history lesson for the day. Come back tomorrow for more interesting facts on weaning!

Hedgehog, at this rate you won't have to buy the book cos I'll just tell you all about it instead!

Oh, and whoever said that BLW is nothing new - you're absolutely right and this is acknowledged in the book, but I think all these childcare books are recycled advice from years ago, it's just not all of us have the support networks we once had to pass this info down.
