Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
scorpio1 · 09/10/2008 15:56

V1KK1 is, due again next april

Soph73 · 09/10/2008 16:28

I would be envious too Scorpio if the gap was bigger Don´t think I could cope with a small age gap, probably because it took me 4 1/2 years to even consider the possibility of having Sam LOL Just wish I had some wealthy relative about to pop their clogs and leave me loads of dosh, then I´d definitely be ttc within the next few years

DonDons · 09/10/2008 17:01

well i think I need to do it sometime or another as I will go back to work eventually and TBH I feel like it is time to make the break. I think it will be harder the longer I leave it (no basis for this - just my feelings).

I feel I have done well to get this far as I never thought I would BF at all.

Also, I really need to go on a course at work for 3 days in about 5 weeks so it seems sensible (I don't fancy expressing again).

scorpio1 · 09/10/2008 17:03

I never thought i would BF either - amazing isn't it! I am starting to feel the same as you, with regard to making the break. Just interested (and sort of want to see if im the same)in others thinking

DonDons · 09/10/2008 17:05

it's great and I am so glad I have been able to do it and I feel selfish and guilty for thinking about stopping. I think the bottles will be a faff too but I am sure I will get used to that.

I wish she could just look at me one day and say 'mother, put your waps away, I'll have mine in a pint glass' but I suspect that is a few years off!

scorpio1 · 09/10/2008 17:59

I know about the guilt thing.

Mimi did really well at dinner - shredded mushroom omelette and sweet pot wedges, bless her!

Mollyfloss · 09/10/2008 19:03

Scorpio, you seem to give Millie really fancy food! I've only done rice cereal, carrott & banana but we've just started. When did you start weaning her? you're doing BLW right? do you have to introduce new food gradually?

LadyBee · 09/10/2008 21:35

ok. Soooooo how come none of you guys warned me about that nappy stuff?

Huh????

huh????

sheesh.

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 09/10/2008 21:41

hahahahahahaha
I really did just LOL.
Further down the thread we did mention 'weaning nappies'

LadyBee · 09/10/2008 21:57

Fortunately he did it just as we were heading out the door for swimming, so after I hosed him down (not quite literally, I had to use the shower), I was at least fairly confident that he would be ok in the pool.
Not even my double swim nappy system would have contained that.

please tell me it settles down?

And am I about to learn that there is actually a point to liners with reusable nappies? Because so far they've had absolutely no use whatsoever...

LadyBee · 09/10/2008 22:01

I thought that the 'weaning nappy' comment referred to the sort of cute bits of carrot visible in his normal BF nappy...not the fruity poo-storm he unleashed today.

SushiMama · 09/10/2008 22:29

LOL LadyBee! Thanks for the heads up! I also naively thought that "weaning" nappies meant "interesting coloured solid-ish poos that don't shoot up the back"! Not looking forward to poo-storm, fruity or not!

Thanks Knitter for the link on the chair covers. I was hoping to find something that would cover the whole chair, in fear of DD throwing food about during blw. I read that they do fling food around? How about white walls? Do I just put highchair as far away from walls as possible?

Oh yes Scorpio, I was also thinking of stopping bf. She's been biting too much these days. Considering formula as I will need to give the nursery something for her and my milk supply seems to have gone down, can't seem to pump much now. Also wanting to ttc soon. Was in fact going to ask you what you were planning to do wrt ttc!

Btw, have all your periods returned?

DD has been a nightmare at night these days. Constantly waking up 20mins- 2 hourly. Granted she does have a cold at the moment- caught it at nursery (?) but this poor sleep stuff has been going on for sometime. Once she gets better, I will implement your 3 day rule! Also been meaning to ask how you manage- the kids, do your stuff- like set up Tripp Trapp, and feed them by 6pm! What is your daily schedule like, if you don't mind sharing? I don't seem to be able to get anything done, and this is with a rather helpful DH, and with just the ONE child to look after! MY Tripp Trapp has been sitting untouched for a week and a half

SushiMama · 09/10/2008 22:32

And including finding time to MN throughout the day!

LadyBee · 09/10/2008 23:10

SushiMama, I've found in my limited experience so far that the BLW part of our meal is messy in a different way to the spoon-feeding part of our meal.

BLW generally starts with a few chunks of food on the highchair tray and ends with lots of tiny bits of food all over the highchair tray and larger bits dropped onto the floor below, but nothing flung.

Spoonfeeding bit is where the flinging comes in, as my DS likes to hold the spoon (and I like to let him) and he tends to get excited and also doesn't get all the food off the spoon and isn't that keen on giving back the spoon so I can load it again, so I quite often get a splat as he flicks it out of his mouth or out of my hand or something. Nothing has reached our walls or chairs though, just me and the floor below.

We are very early days though, so maybe there is more flinging when they get older...

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 10/10/2008 09:24

Sushimama, each dc you have you become a bit more structured I think, not a 'routine' as such but you plan ahead more.
Say you had my 'schedule' for example which is probably pretty similar to scorpio's.
I get up, DP gets in the shower and sorts ds2 out whilst I do breakfast and DD&DS1 get their uniforms on. We all eat brekkie, dp goes to work. I get ready, take the eldest 2 to school. Get in, tidy kitchen, feed ds2(like I am now and go on mn one-handed ), put him down for nap.
DS2 wakes up at 11, leave to get ds1 at about 11:20. Come home, have lunch, feed ds2, put him down for a nap. He wakes at about 3, go pick dd up, come home, do any jobs (dd keeps an eye on the boys and shouts me if they do anything) ds2 has a feed and nap at four, I start to prep dinner, eldest two do homework/drawing at the table, dp gets in, dinner, one of us showers them all while the other cleans up the dinner mess. Put DS1 to bed, feed ds2 and then put ds2 and dd to bed. Then it's about 7:30/8pm and I collapse.
If there is anything that needs doing I do it at naptime or put ds2 in his highchair/walker/bouncer as he'll do 20 minutes in there before he gets bored.

DonDons · 10/10/2008 09:25

Sushi - this is our daily schedule:
7am get up, BF then DH gives fruity puree type breakfast
Play till 8.45 ish then attempt to put to bed (DD that is, not DH - he's buggered off to work by then)
9-10 - nap - I run round house doing housework/cleaning kitchen/emptying dishwasher or playing on mumsnet
10am - dress DD
10-11.45 do something - try and go out if poss/supermarket/friends/baby group
11.45 BF followed by solids
12.30 - bed for DD
12.30 till 2.30 - free time for me!
2.30 -5.00 - go out or stay in and play with DD, can usually leave her to entertain herself for a while during this time, or plonk her on floor in donut to watch me cooking etc
5.00 - solids
5.30 - nursery rhymes/dancing/rolling about on bed - sometime by me or DH if he is home
6.00 - bath
6.15 - BF, usually until about 6.45 but always, always over by 7pm when DD goes to bed.

Every day...

Piccalilli2 · 10/10/2008 09:33

VS, you're so organised! I'm all over the place with my 2, which isn't helping with the sleep issues. Part of my problem is that dd1 is only at nursery 3 days a week so we have three different routines depending whether it's Mon-Tues, Weds-Fri or the weekend. I really need to get some more consistency for Zoe's sake.

Good news here is that solid food seems to be making all the difference to Zoe's sleep - she slept 8-3 last night, then quick feed and back down til 6! I am ecstatic. If she keeps this up not only might I not be psychotic through sleep deprivation, I might even be able to (whisper it) go out

Quick blw question for the experts, how quickly do you intro new meals? So far we've mainly been doing a mixture of mush and blw at lunch and dinnertime but quite keen to up the blw and intro breakfast. Ooh, and can I give her bits of pancake now as we often have that for weekend breakfast?

scorpio1 · 10/10/2008 09:35

Whoever asked about fancy food (LOL)We have no allergies, she is 25 weeks....just give her whatever we are having, obv not honey, or salt, and holding off on the meat for a bit.

I have had 2 proper periods since birth; and on the other months spotting. Mimi is already having less milk, so when it happens it happens, y'know? Think i will stop BF after xmas, I'm not in too much of a hurry but would like to give birth next year. We havent been using contraception since Mimi was 12 weeks, but personally i feel BF still is slightly more important than ttc again...just a weighing game, lol. Individual too, of course.

VS, what are you doing WRT BF?

Whoever asked about routine - I am up at 7, do brekky, clothes etc for boys...basically by 835 everyone is dressed & fed, kitchen cleaned and house hoovered, table wiped down. After school run i have brekky, put washing on, etc. Normally pop out in the mornings.

Think i am so used to having a routine (6 yrs!) that i just dont think about it anymore. Gotta rush meeting my mum for coffee etc in a bit.

scorpio1 · 10/10/2008 09:36

Pancake will be a nice BLW brekky could offer some banana slices too

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 10/10/2008 09:50

Alex has breakfast with us now, he just has a couple of slices of apple normally, not much gets eaten but he has started shouting at me if we're eating and he isn't so it's easier to just give him that whilst we eat our breakfast. He was just having dinner when we do and he is normally asleep when we have lunch.
Piccalilli I wouldn't say I'm organised! I just have to have done things by a certain time. I went a bit anal with getting Alex to sleep three times a day because he was terrible, waking at least two times in the night and it was driving me mental. I have to leave the house at 8:40/11:20/3:10 so don't really have much choice with everything else.
Dp starts shifts a week monday as he has his first PDU(when they go out and be coppers rather than just sit in the classroom) which is going to be hard but I'm going to just have to stick to my normal times and add his dinner in there somewhere. He is working both the Friday and Saturday night so I've got a friend coming to stay for the weekend which is probably going to throw it all off kilter but we aren't as strict at the weekends anyway.
Now Alex is used to those nap times he starts to get tired at those times so I see the tiredness coming and think argh! naptime! lol.

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 10/10/2008 09:52

Oh, wrt BFing. I want Alex to self wean so I was thinking that if my periods aren't back and him sleeping through the night by 9 months then I'll build up a mass supply of EBM, cut him down to two actual breastfeeds a day and the rest from a cup, then once I'm pg I can increase his intake if he wants to or just continue expressing. In fact, I may start a thread to find out how other people have got pg when BFing.

TheShipsCat · 10/10/2008 10:23

Hi Vs, I've got something for your blog on weaning. The HV just told me that BLW was purely about keeping up with the baby's needs. A is 22 weeks today, has dropped down to the 25th centile (from the 75th) and has added two extra feeds a day/ night. She told me to start on the baby rice straight away, puree et, not to use more solid food for a while. Now I'm totally confused, as I'd decided to wait until 26 weeks, and start with solids, but worried that A is not gaining weight fast enough. She told me that four weeks is such a short time it would make no difference .

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 10/10/2008 10:32

Four weeks is such a short time that it wouldn't make a difference? So why bother then? Surely she realises what she said?

What do you want to do?
Can you get another professioanl opinion? FWIW, Alex has been dropping centiles too. they do sometimes, the centiles are just an average of what babies grow like.

Are you BFing or FFing? (Sorry, losing count of who is doing what!)

TheShipsCat · 10/10/2008 10:40

That's what I thought. And 4 weeks is quite a long time in a 22-week old's life.
I'm BFing, but trying to stop by Nov1, so introducing bottles.
Fuck knows what I want to do. But don't want to do the wrong thing by A, just not sure what that is.
Sorry, just came on to vent a little...

VictorianSqualorSquelchNSquirm · 10/10/2008 10:50

hmm, I think you know what I'd do and I don't want yet another argument on weaning!

Apparently at around the time the baby starts to get ready (not necessarily be ready) for solids their digestion system starts to work better, so they digest milk quicker, which can explain why the growth spurt around now is so bloody harsh. Also A will be much more active now, so burning off many many more calories than she already was so her demanding extra feeds really shouldn't be a worry.

What is happening with ehr weight? Alex was born on the 98th centile, went down to 75th within two weeks, back up to 91st at 7weeks and since then has been making his way down them, he is now between the 25th and 50th centile. Form what I know, this can be perfectly normal, as long as they don't suddenly plummet from 98th to 25th in a week or two then it shouldn't be too much of a worry, growth does slow down.

What chart are you using? Is it the breastfed baby chart or the normal one? (The normal one has both breastfed and formula fed babies on it so is less accurate).
