OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LadyBee · 24/09/2008 09:09

hellooo??

Don't tell me, your babies are all have long lie-ins and allowing you to sleep til 10.

Electricity man has been and gone, so I feel like I've got a 'free' day now, as was expecting to be still waiting at 12:30.

Weather is rubbish though, quiet day on mumsnet at home might be in order. I wonder if there's any chocolate in the house?

Peachy · 24/09/2008 09:31

yeah right lol, school run

'When care packages are devised do they think it will be 2 different children one side for the class room and one side for the playground'- ds1 is 2 kids: bizarrely he's well behaved in class (structure) but they want his academics up- sats I guess

OMaLittle · 24/09/2008 12:01

Peachy, poor you. Please don't feel like a bad mum, you are great.

Bloody flights to SA have gone up £250 EACH in the last week. Any chance they might go down again?? SO pissed off. Was really excited about that holiday and wanted to book last week but DH had to wait for something to do with work, don't know what, should have asked/pressed/insisted, now we're going to bloody miss out.

OMaLittle · 24/09/2008 12:02

LadyBee, super-impressed at chutney! That is, like, being a proper mum.

Where IS Scorpio?

EllieG · 24/09/2008 12:04

Hey all!

Things OK here - been busy as Mol had a stinking cold and ear infection BUT - she has finally learned how to get herself to sleep! I'm so happy! So no more non-sleepers anon for me

Hope everyone else is good - will catch up properly later cos she's just woken up. Must've heard me going on MN

SalLikesCoffee · 24/09/2008 12:53

Nononono Ellie, not you deserting me as well!!!

Argh no, Oma, that sucks! Have you checked Virgin, BA and South African Airways? (SA flies directly too). Uhm, you never know, but I doubt if prices will go down again, as it's the start of peak season, as it's summer there. Hmm... If you consider doing a stopover (which I don't normally recommend, but it might work), look at schedules with an one hour stopover only, e.g. fly from City (easier than Heathrow or Gatwick), via somewhere close like Paris (or Zurich, can't remember how long). As luggage will be checked in to your destination, you could see the stopover time wasted made up by the savings re airport? However, not sure about leaving times - that's the other nice thing about direct flights, you don't waste a day.
You might already have done this, but check directly on BA's website, because there you can see how it's made up - sometimes leaving one day earlier or later makes a huge difference. I'm gutted for you.
Btw, if you can't go now, it gets cheaper again in Feb and the weather's still nice there, so a good excuse to escape the cold and dark weather for a bit.

Wos Ladybee, you're some kind of supermom. How exactly do you manage to be so superefficient???

Ah, call of wild, let me see if I can cheer him up.

SalLikesCoffee · 24/09/2008 13:07

Ok, he's happy again. Poor thing wants to sleep, but his blocked nose keeps waking him up.

Where was I? Oh yes. Peachy, did the head approach you in the end? Someone on your thread suggested the GP route - I wonder if they'll be able to help. I thought your e-mail was really good and tactful though, so maybe school will wake up?!

Peachy · 24/09/2008 13:23

Head approached me to say it was an accident so very confused now!

SalLikesCoffee · 24/09/2008 13:33

Oh good grief. I don't understand this either, but maybe this incident would make it easier in case something actually happens again in the future, at least you've put this in writing, so you could use it to back up the request next time.
But what I don't get - if this was an accident, what right did this dad have to verbally attack you? Did they tell him it was an accident??? If so, they should really have a word with him, because this isn't on.

I need you help, please:
Is there anything for a chesty cough to use on a baby? I've got stuff for tickly cough, but that's really just glycerol, so won't help for chesty one.
Also, at what stage should you take a baby to the dr if you think it's just a normal cold, but that it has gone into his chest a bit. He doesn't have fever, and as long as I use the drops and sucker thing, he can breathe okish. His coloring etc looks fine, so part of me thinks I should just sit this out, but I don't want my ignorance to mean that I don't take him when I actually should have...

Scorpio, if you're out there - halloooooooo. We miss you.

Peachy · 24/09/2008 13:35

I would say gp if temp rises

have you tried running a hot shower and having R in the steamy room? often helps

SalLikesCoffee · 24/09/2008 13:41

No, havent done that - thanks for tip Peachy , will do.

LadyBee · 24/09/2008 13:45

superefficient? no no no. I compensate for my lack of efficiency and proper mummy-ness by doing Other Stuff which doesn't actually have to get done.
On the other hand I still have not done the hoovering I said I would do, still haven't got a wedding venue sorted (and thus, will probably not have a wedding for several months later than we wanted), still have a baby who needs LOTS of help to get to sleep, still have not sold the baby clothes I packaged up aaaggggesss ago, still don't have my passport issues sorted out etc etc etc.

I do have four jars of chutney though

Peachy, am going to read your other thread. But it does sound confusing to me.

OMa - poo.

LadyBee · 24/09/2008 13:58

oh re: the chesty cough. No, 'fraid not. I've quizzed every pharmacist around here but the chesty cough mixtures are for older babies.

These are the guidelines I got for when to go the GP:

Coughing: The most common reason for a cough is the common cold which can irritate the airways if there is a lot of mucus. Such coughs are generally self-limiting and nothing to worry about even though they're chesty and sometimes persist for more than a week. Assuming your baby is feeding well, seems happy and doesn't have a fever, there's no need to see your doctor. But if your baby's cough becomes worse, starts keeping him awake at night, and he develops a fever and goes off his food, then see your GP.

When to see your doctor:

  • Feeding poorly: this is worse than just having a blocked nose and finding it more difficult to feed than normal -- only worry if your baby is barely drinking any milk at all.
  • He seems miserable and worn out -- you'll know if your baby is not his usual self.
  • Reduced urine - this ties in with poor feeding. If your baby has a completely dry nappy for longer than 5 hours see a doctor.
  • Apnoea - this is when your baby stops breathing for 10 seconds or more, and it can happen while he is both awake or asleep. It's normal for babies to have short pauses when breathing and to breathe erratically. If your baby has apnoea then get medical help.
  • Struggling to breathe - being bunged up and snuffly is normal and nothing to worry about, but if your bby seems to be fighting for breath this is a problem and it will be obvious that something is wrong. Take him to your hospital's Emergency Department.
  • Blue lips or tongue - this means that your baby is findin hard to breathe and has become short of oxygen. Blue lips can sometimes just mean that he is very cold. If he's not cold then take him to your hospital's Emergency Department.
LadyBee · 24/09/2008 13:59

I have these to hand because I was also worrying about DS's cough which seems to be going on and on.

SalLikesCoffee · 24/09/2008 14:05

lol Ladybee. Sounds superefficient to me! . I saw a friend's Christening pics the other day - it was held at the Fan Museum and really beautiful. She said everyone loved it (they rented the whole museum, so the do itself was at the back, and then the museum open for the guests to wander around it - apparently especially the older guests loved that bit). I can't remember exactly how much, but I think she said it would have been £250 for the hall only or £850 for the whole thing. I might be wrong, but worth checking. Here's their website. They do afternoon tea in the Orangery on Tuesdays and Sundays, so if you want to see it for yourself, you can either just ask to have a look or go for a tea - if I remember correctly it's £5 entrance to museum and £3.50 for the tea, scones and cake.

Peachy · 24/09/2008 14:09

Oh the fan museum looks lovely!

we married in a water mill. cost a damn site more than £850 though!

SalLikesCoffee · 24/09/2008 14:11

Wow, great - thanks for that info Ladybee.

I'll do the shower thing, and have just remembered that I've got a facial steamer somewhere (way back in the days when I could still be bothered), so will put some baby olbas drops in the water and leave it on in his room for a while.

Sulk of the day: A fuse went the other day, so tripped all the plugs. Dh replaced it, but now the dishwasher has gone all confused and won't go past the rinse cycle, even if I stand on my head... For something that I thought so unnecessary when we moved in, I'm stuggling (i.e. lazy as hell) to get used to hand washing again. Dh said he'll try and reset everything again at the weekend. Urgh.

SalLikesCoffee · 24/09/2008 14:20

Oooh, a Water Mill - how lovely!!! I really like special places like that.
We got married in SA, so had a great reception for (in £ anyway) cheap.

OMaLittle · 24/09/2008 16:28

Ellie, great news about Molly's sleep. My girls' little cousin has just been named after her too!

Sal, after looking at your pics (gorgeous!) and finding out your full name I have emailed DH to ask what he thinks of it for (as yet undecided ) middle name for DD2. It's beautiful!

OMaLittle · 24/09/2008 16:32

ps DD2 is so good at sitting up now! great for playing, she is much better at entertaining herself. Still doesn't roll, though (apart from once about three months ago!)

Bought some formula today. Is 6 months + though. DH was giving me the hard sell again last night. I know he wants to help. I am quite close to it, I think, although expressing getting better again.

Can I use EBM from four months ago from freezer? Our freezer is very cold. Will it be the wrong constituents, though?

Nursery have said they might have a couple of sessions in baby room for DD2. I am pretty tempted, I must say! Left DD1 four full days a week when she was 24 weeks .

SalLikesCoffee · 24/09/2008 16:53

Ah, thanks Oma . It means "peace" (dh feels quite strongly that I don't live up to my name, lol), but was also the name of the woman who danced for king Herod and demanded John the Baptist's head (now there dh can apparently see a link...), so just so you're warned, every now and again there's an opera with "my" name...

I'd say take the baby places at the nursery. Roelof goes one morning a week, and loves it. I stayed with him the first day, and he was fascinated by the other babies. It is also really nice to have such a big block of time completely free to do all the things that you can't do with someone on your lap / in your arms etc. I'm planning to paint our room this Friday - something that's impossible (ok, not really, but too much schlepp if I have to stop every 20 mins) otherwise. I spent all morning last Friday either in Waterstones or the library. Heaven. I love him more than anything in the world, but it is nice doing nothing while knowing he's having fun too.

PortAndLemon · 24/09/2008 17:15

Fan Museum looks gorgeous!

IME hard to get GPs to take coughs seriously anyway. Unless you can persuade baby to turn blue in front of them, then they treat it as urgent [who me, bitter? emoticon]

PortAndLemon · 24/09/2008 17:16

Oh, have photos rom holiday on FB now. Note examples of responsible parenting...

SalLikesCoffee · 24/09/2008 17:19

I want to see your pics!!! Please? [tries to restrain myself from blatant begging]

PortAndLemon · 24/09/2008 17:49

I've put one of the responsible parenting shots on my profile, and I'll CAT you a link to the FB album.

BTW, if anyone is interested, we went to a Toddler Holiday gite -- highly recommend, if you don't need huge quantities of guaranteed sun on holiday (as it happens it was pretty sunny this time, but the Norman climate is much like that of SE England so you take pot-luck a bit on the weather).
