Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Kaybeeand2boys · 03/09/2008 08:43

Hi everyone
I haven't posted for ages but just had a couple of questions...
Jacob has become uninterested in milk all of a sudden, he will only take about 3 or 4 oz each feed, and i'm not sure what to do! Never had this prob with Zak who polished off almost 8oz every feed! It's been going on for a while now and am worried as he isnt putting on as much weight as he was before. He was on the 75th percentile before but is going down towards the 50th........
He is 18weeks 2 days so technically not old enough for starting solids, but he is def intereested in food,he smacks his lips when we eat and tries to grab stuff, should I just give him some???
He also has gone from sleeping thru (well, 8pm - 5.30am) to waking every night.

PortAndLemon · 03/09/2008 08:45

They only changed the ge limits because apparently some parents weren't checking the ingredients and then were doubling up with other medications containing the same active ingredients. There were a bunch of threads on here about it. So if you're not giving him anything else then personally I'd go ahead and give him the old recommended dose for his age.

OMaLittle · 03/09/2008 08:50

First thing I have to say is that Scorpio is officially the sweetest girl ever - I have a massive box of chocolates to see me through today after my bad night last night. (Up from 1-2 and 3-5). I shouldn't complain as it's only about three weeks since that was the norm!

WOOHOO LadyBee! Go Benedict, go Benedict...

Sorry, Kaybee, no advice, I remember DD1 losing interest at this age due to being too interested in everything else. Just perseverance saw us through! Only thing I would add is that he's probably not hungry if he's not taking as much milk so personally I would definitely hold out for solids. Love your boys' names, by the way.

Right, DD1 at nursery and DD2 asleep, so I am heading to bed.

Thanks again Scorpio!!

LadyBee · 03/09/2008 09:07

oh I see, so babies were getting double doses of paracetamol etc., I'll see how he goes today and think about picking some up this afternoon - might have to go away from my local pharmacy..they know my baby too well!

Kaybee - my DS also seem to be taking much less at each feed during the days, but I think it's just because he's soooo interested in everything else that's going on he just gets distracted once his initial hunger is satisfied with a snack. Feeding in public is impossible!!
I make sure his first and last feeds are in a quiet dark room and he usually feeds a lot longer for those ones, often in two stages with about a 20 min break in between.
We haven't had any slow in weight gain but he's also staring all goggle-eyed at me when I eat and grabs at my plate and glasses when I have him on my knee.
Don't have an answer for you about whether to give food, but I'm sure someone else will be along with advice

VictorianSqualor · 03/09/2008 09:13

Kaybee, no, don't give him food.

The only way you can tell a baby is physically ready for food is that they have hit 26 weeks.

If you really think your LO is ready for food the best thing to do is put them in a highchair and give them some steamed veg to see how they act. If they are able to sit up straight unaided, use the pincher grip to pick up food, put it in their mouth, chew it and swallow then they are likely to be ready, until then they are not and you could cause harm.

Sorry to everyone that is weaning already but as not one of the babies are sitting up unaided consistently, not one of the babies on this thread are ready for weaning, be it half a spoon of baby rice or a big mac. You're risking allergies/intolerances/IBS/Crohns and more.

Can I ask why everyone has suddenly decided to risk this even knowing the food is currently making it's way through your babies stomach wall into their blood stream?

I'm sorry if that sounds harsh but it's not like you don't know the facts.

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 03/09/2008 09:33

OMa - hope they're nice!

Mimi is doing just fine on just her milk - hold off food, just keep trying the milk! Milk has more calories in it than anything you could give him now anyway.

scorpio1 · 03/09/2008 09:40

oh and sods law - sun shining - and i have to stay in ALL DAY for parcel, boiler man and washing machine man!

Peachy · 03/09/2008 09:44

scorpio- we (whole peachy family) saw the feeling live last month

exceptionally good.

Peachy · 03/09/2008 09:48

Sorry VS but that made me a bit [angr] (sleepless night to)- you know why we are weaning Bas! It wasn't a choice issue, it was because Paeds said and if you choose to gnore their advice they have the option of a SS referral, esp. a famil like ours

scorpio1 · 03/09/2008 09:49

was he hot??

VictorianSqualor · 03/09/2008 09:57

Peachy, sorry, I thought you'd realise I didn't mean you. Bas has other reasons for weaning and you've seen a paed, so you have genuine reason to wean him.

I just don't understand why everyone else is.

OP posts:
KnitterInTheNW · 03/09/2008 10:03

VS, I was talking to our BF coordinator/HV about it and she said to aim for 24 weeks so that he's started by 26 weeks, and can start slowly. He'll be 24 weeks in 2 days. He's a lot calmer today so I think I'll hold off til the weekend to try again.

That's why I'm doing it.

KnitterInTheNW · 03/09/2008 10:05

So there.

VictorianSqualor · 03/09/2008 10:08

But knitter, your bf lady is trained in breastfeeding, not readiness for weaning.

OP posts:
KnitterInTheNW · 03/09/2008 10:10

How do you know that? Do you know her?

Don't want to start an argument, just saying.

VictorianSqualor · 03/09/2008 10:14

If she knew anything about weaning knitter she wouldn't advocate feeding your baby before 26 weeks.

I don't want to argue either

I just get really frustrated with professionals giving out information that is leading to a higher risk of problems in the future.

I don't understand 'aim for 24 weeks so he is started by 26' either, as soon as you give food you've started.

If anyone wants to know more about the guidelines and why it's 26 weeks read this

OP posts:
KnitterInTheNW · 03/09/2008 10:21

Gah, I was so sure before. Now I'm not.

VictorianSqualor · 03/09/2008 10:23

Ultimately it's down to you, and it's very likely you haven't caused any issues yet, and quite possible you won't, I just daren't take the risk.

Do what you want to do, but just be informed

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 03/09/2008 10:34

My period appears to have made a comeback - 11 weeks after the last one, lol.

would be just when im going on holiday!

Kaybeeand2boys · 03/09/2008 11:50

So all of us who were weaned as babies before 26 weeks, and all those who did as recommended with previous children before recommendations changed have caused damage?
DS1 was weaned early due to reflux and that is an issue that DS2 has also, however we are still waiting to see the paeds with him. I shall hold off for now but it is not my intention to wait until he can chew bloody vegetables.

VictorianSqualor · 03/09/2008 12:02

Not necessarily kaybee, but possibly, we don't know which babies are ready to wean before 26 weeks or which babies will have problems because of it.

I weaned dd at 16weeks (Adjusted as she was prem) as it's what I was told to do then, I won't know until she is an adult if there are any issues, and I won't know that it's definitely because of that.

The only time I personally would advocate early weaning is in a situation like Peachy's, Bas has a dairy intolerance already so milk isn't necessarily the best thing for him and her Paed has advised otherwise.

The link I posted explains it all.

OP posts:
VictorianSqualor · 03/09/2008 12:05

Oh also Kaybee, it is probably best to wait 'until he can chew bloody vegetables' (no need to swear though was there? I'm trying to help you by giving you advice) because that is when nature intends him to eat.

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 03/09/2008 12:05

i too weaned at 4 months with others, as that was the advice given to mothers then. BLW was not as 'normal' as it is now, every baby was spoon fed, more or less.

Now, the research has identified 26 weeks as being the best time; milk has far more calories than a mushed up apple could ever offer.

Plus, a bonus with BLW is that you dont have to puree, mash or sieve a bloody carrot! also no stresses at introducing lumpy food by a set stage. I have never seen a baby so happy as munching on a bit of toast on its own!

Peachy has explicit 'consent' from a Paed whom she knows very well, and knows Bas' and Bas' family history and needs.

PortAndLemon · 03/09/2008 13:19

While I am mindful of the reasons for not weaning early, and am not planning to wean DD until she's 26 weeks (short of giving her lettuce etc. from my plate when she kicks off) I think you are over-egging the "must be able to sit unaided" and "must have a pincer grip" elements. DS didn't have a pincer grip until he was 8 months, and there's no guarantee a baby will be sitting unaided at 6 months. Indeed, the Rapley BLW guidelines suggest a supported seated position to begin with and expect a fist grip; the expectation is that by the time your baby is a proficient self-feeded her or she will probably be sitting unaided and have a decent pincer grip.

Personally now DD is five months I'm going to start letting her have bits of vegetable/salad from my plate if she seems to want them. As I won't be putting anything in her mouth I will be astonished if she manages to get anything into her mouth, bitten off, chewed and swallowed before she's 6 months, but in the unlikely event that she does I won't be fretting about whether she's done it with a pincer grip. Again, this is in line with the Rapley guidelines ("You can begin to do this as soon as he shows an interest in watching you,
although he is unlikely to be ready to put food in his mouth until he is about six months old.").

VictorianSqualor · 03/09/2008 13:29

But PAL, if they are past 26 weeks you can be sure that they are internally ready, the sitting unaided/pincer grip etc is for if you plan to wean before 26 weeks.
