I like the idea of doing it before work so that it can't go on forever. An egg timer might work too. He does need to come home earlier and you need your Mum to stay away more. You often sound like you need her help, dh sounds like he needs to work and there's little needing of each other. I agree that you need to get away together perhaps but you also need to be a family together. I don't know what he expected of parenthood but staying at work late each night and thinking nothing or nobody would change is not the answer. I think you should be doing the night routine together, L should be in her cot and asleep and then grown up time. That's family life and it can be fantastic.

I am up early [freak emoticon]. Well last night a sick Mateo climbed in to bed with us, and I just couldn't sleep listening to his snotty snoring, so I slept on the couch at about 1am, I then woke up at 5am when dh went to work, so decided to catch up on MN while the boys are sleeping. I'm really tired and haven't felt good due to these stupid antibiotics I'm taking, so I don't know how I'll work till 9:30 tonight.

DH is the first of 4 very sporty siblings (3 boys 1 girl but the girl plays rugby for England so has a fair appetite). They were 17,14,12 and 10 respectively when I met dh. Oh shoot PJ that week is the week we are being interviewed for our jobs. You know the ones we already have but we are being restructred so have to apply and be interviewed. Hoping to actually be selected for one of them but if not shortlisted will let you know as will def be able to do it then . Am filling in application form over the weekend. Not done one for years so feeling a bit anxious to be honest.
