Stupid HV. You should say 30 years? Long time, have you done any training recently?

Alex was up a lot again last night.

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 13/08/2008 13:51

hard isn't it? am very very tired. Would rather give her a bottle of formula last thing at night than wean just yet.

scorpio1 · 13/08/2008 13:52

Mimi has had formula before when she was a day or 2 old, and an oz when i had thrush and couldnt bear it.

SalLikesCoffee · 13/08/2008 13:55

lol, no wonder I like you lot so much, it's because we're all slightly mad!

Scorpio, annoying hv. I feel slightly sorry for your dh, as men tend to believe the "medical expert" ime. Just say "yes" and go on doing what you feel best. No point argueing.

scorpio1 · 13/08/2008 13:58

oh dh knows my word on the children is final, especially the baby iyswim, he isnt pushing me.

I am going to reconsider things in 2 weeks - maybe a formula top-up at night or something. need to keep sane until then.

Told hv i didnt want to wean unti lat least 24 weeks - she said many babies dont last out that long i said all that about their stomachs and being able to eat themselves, sit up etc and she said about baby gloop rice!!

VictorianSqualor · 13/08/2008 14:04

Scorpio, If you want to give Millie some formula, then give her some, a bottle of formula now and then doesn't have anywhere near the effect early weaning would have, especially as even if Millie was one of the earliest babies to ever be ready she definitely isn't ready now.
The only time I would recommend early weaning (ie between 17-26 weeks) would be in a case like Bas's, Peachy knows he already has intolerance to milk so fruit veg purees won't be likelt to harm him anymore than milk would and his weight gain is an issue, plus she has seen a paed. apart from that I'd never risk it.

Does DH know about the risks and that at the moment Millie's stomach is allowing milk through to her bloodstream? If she was to be fed solids that too would go through which is what can cause allergies/ibs/crohns etc. (they can also be caused genetically but it's thought a large section is down to early weaning) - I know you know most of that, but does DH?

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 13/08/2008 14:06

he knows as of today, lol.

Thats what i said to HV - she isnt even 17 weeks yet, so not even ready at all.

i am going to reconsider options in 2 weeks.

LadyBee · 13/08/2008 15:29

Isn't it amazing how different the advice HVs give is. I was at baby clinic on Monday and asked about solids, mainly just to see what they'd say (spoiling for a fight ) and she just said, oh he's obviously thriving on breastmilk, I wouldn't even think about it for another 6-8 weeks (i.e. pretty much 6 months).
Which was odd, because directly before me was a lady with a very small baby and the HV was telling not to BF on demand anymore but to feed every 4 hours.
I guess to be fair, I think the lady had said she found BFing easy but was thinking about giving it up because she couldn't get anything else done - so maybe the HV thought that rather than giving up completely, doing it in a more scheduled way would be the next best option. Still...I was surprised. The 4 hrs seemed long to me too, kept wanting to pipe up and say ''err..this baby gets hungry around 3 hrs, maybe try that first??" but held my tongue.

Had just about forgotten about meet up (my brain is mush this week) will head over to that thread soon.

Peachy · 13/08/2008 15:47

'allergies/ibs/crohns etc'- there's also suggestions of an implication in asd now- given that 1 in 86 (ish, my mmory) kids is asd it's not worth it

Bas is on strictly df / gluten free; I'm pretty knwledgeable about nutrition anyway (Boys private dietician said so lol), otherwise Paed or no Paed i'd say no

DonDons · 13/08/2008 16:13

at your HV Scorpio. Mine made no mention of weaning at Amelie's weigh in last week even though her weight gain has slowed a little (she is 15lbs now) - they are all so bloody inconsistent. She can manage 4 hours between feeds now and then but not this week when she seems to be hungry all day long - which I hope is down to a growth spurt and will end soon. That said, she is sleeping 7-7 so it's swings and roundabouts I guess.

DH and I going on our first night out together tonight. Am v excited but also not looking forward to tomorrow morning!

Peachy · 13/08/2008 16:54

Ooh have fun dondons, Dh and I are going out on the 23rd, but bas will be with us (nobody mad enough to want all 4 anyway LOL)

ladybee posted recorded for you, hope it gets there (seems to be 50-50 from our PO which is why recorded )

Got to get bas some more clothes- for akinny he's still in 3-6, (he's only 11lbs 1oz but looong).

Potato, pear and carot for dinner. Appteising LOL

chipmonkey · 13/08/2008 17:53

My Mum is mad enough! Have just booked 2 days in Budapest for dh and me in October! I have a small stash of EBM in the freezer but not nearly enough for 2 days! She has agreed to come for the weekend and look after the boys. Oh God, it will be OK, won't it?

SalLikesCoffee · 13/08/2008 18:16

Have fun, DonDons!

Oh how lovely Chipmonkey. I'm sure it'll be fine. And you've still got some time to add to your ebm stash!

MonMoo · 13/08/2008 21:05

Can someone tell thick old me more about the dangers of early weaning? Off to do some reseach on the internet after reading all your comments but as you all seem to know alot about it then anything you can share would be good. Am not planning on weaning dd2 yet (she is only 16 weeks!) but did wean dd1 at 20 weeks (with no apparant probs as yet - she is 3 now). Also have a friend who is weaning now - her ds is 19 weeks so would like to pass on info to her. Right off to the rest of the internet to see what I can find out.

MommyHasaHeadache · 13/08/2008 21:23

It's so interesting that early weaning can cause allergies/ibs/crohns, etc. My mother gave all 3 of us porrige from the age of 6 weeks and I have always had stomach problems!

I think us woman are such simple creatures to please, and yet it seems some men get it all wrong (well the one's that aren't meant for us). I got all manner of presents from my ex, my DH wrote me a poem when he 1st realised he loved me (and he is SO not the poem kind of man) and that was it for me! The best present I have ever received!

Peachy · 13/08/2008 21:28

Baabies have leaky guts which can allow potential allerfensto filter through..... early weaning can thereby (thoretically) cause allergies and immuno related disorders

plus after 6 months they can have gluten and you can skip steril;isng which is frankly less faff

the other 3 were weaned early because that was the guideline then, and actually it seems to have done wonders for ds2 and ds3 but ds1 has so many dietary problems and you can't predict which ones will be unlucky.

And trust me if you ever tried gf bread (try chewing a flannel, same effect!) that's pretty unlucky!

MonMoo · 13/08/2008 21:43

Hmm there is quite alot out there on early weaning. Will def try and hold off until abit later for dd2 though don't think we have caused dd1 any probs - she seems to have a fairly healthy belly as far as I can tell and no allergies. Like you say Peachy, I guess you just can't tell who will get lucky/unlucky with it.
Found this leaflet on another mumsnet thread which some may find helpful (from 2006 though so not sure if it still up to date) www.healthpromotionagency.org.uk/Resources/nutrition/pdfs/Weaning%20made%20easy.pdf
(Not sure if that link will work - never posted one before...)
Right off to get some sleep before the nightly onslaught to my boobs. Night all!

PortAndLemon · 13/08/2008 21:49

I use a touch of Sudocrem (Sudocreme? I have a mental block on spelling of that) on neck creases as well.

Is there a thread on Friday's meet?

MommyHasaHeadache · 13/08/2008 21:54

SushiMama · 13/08/2008 22:11

Hi all! Found you through meet-up page. Would love to join in. Had my baby girl on 20th April. She's been great but I think I've been too reclusive. Want to try to get out more especially as I've got the date set for going back to work!

SalLikesCoffee · 13/08/2008 22:17

Thanks for that leaflet, MonMoo.

On weaning - I'm going to wait until at least 6 months (both because I'm lazy and because I've got a family history - not self, but mom, brother - of eczema, psoriases, food allergies etc), but wondered on the following:

I consider blw, and wondered whether it would be ok to leave Roelof to grab my food (if something suitable of course) when the time comes so that he got used to it before proper weaning, or whether it would mean I'm confusing him (food/toys ? ). Say, for example, if I was eating an apple now, would it be ok to give him a piece to "chew" on now - hard, so that he can't actually eat it, but so that he got used to putting in his mouth etc and different tastes. Or a piece of steamed broccoli etc if he was to try and grab it from my plate (Second one slightly unlikely as lately I've been rubbish with proper lunches and he sleeps by the time I have dinner, but just theoretically). Any idea?

SalLikesCoffee · 13/08/2008 22:19

Hi SushiMama! Shocking how they are old enough for work to become a consideration again, hey. Feels as if they were born just yesterday! (My grey hair tells a different story though...)

Are you coming to Friday's meetup?

SalLikesCoffee · 13/08/2008 22:21

Oooh, VS, wanted to tell you: I eventually got my bouncer!

LadyBee · 13/08/2008 22:33

Hi SushiMama, welcome! When are you going back to work? are you going back full time?
I'm so jealous of all these holiday plans! We still haven't received B's passport and I have a feeling it's getting too late to get a ticket back to NZ at a reasonable price now. Still I guess if I don't have to pay for that, maybe we will be able to afford a holiday after all.
VS - what do you think about the meet-up? If you're coming, what time do you want to be heading back - I think we can move meet up time around your travel plans, seeing you're coming from far far away
