Sabela is starting to squawk every time I walk away from her. IS this about the time for 'separation anxiety'? Anyway, empathy with Simpson. DD has been quite difficult now all the lovely guests who were playing with er ALL DAY have gone!

justkeepswimming · 13/08/2008 20:09

oh yes, def separation anxiety time here!
watches me walk out of the room and screeches, it's quite sweet i guess
i just keep talking to him and saying what i'm doing and keep coming back, it's all you can do i think.

i'm still about, just not keeping up very well!

thinking of not bfding ds2 tonight, fingers crossed it goes ok.....
i know others are prepared to keep feeding but i'm not! have had it with crap sleep and feel the need to do something.
so controlled crying here we come...unless i chicken out or forget in a sleep-deprived haze later on
want to get ds2 into some kind of predictable routine so i can start thinking about him going to nursery with ds1 if only for a few hours to start with.
think the probs we've been having with ds1 going to nursery (has been sobbing recently ) might be linked to ds2 not staying with him.

anyhoo, dinner here, back later

LaTrucha · 13/08/2008 20:16

Good luck JKS! I'm getting pretty fed up too TBH. I did get 7 hours straight sleep out of DD last night but then I couldn't get back to sleep at 4am. She's gone down almost a full hour earlier than normal today so who knows how much sleep I'll get tomight. I find myself actually getting scared of the might time because of sleep deprivation.

ok. Three stupid questions:

  1. Now dd is sitting up, should I move her cot down a notch?

  2. How often are you supposed to clean baby teeth and what's the best way

third stupid question gone out of my head. My brain is addled.

simpson · 13/08/2008 21:00

LaT - We are having separation anxiety too just like JKS says it would quite sweet if it wasn't so annoying.

I would definately move her cot down a notch. One day she will just suprise you & when you go into her she willing standing reaching for things (this is what happened with DS anyway )

Don't really know on the teeth front. I have been given a rough cloth type thingie which I will just rub DD's teeth will without toothpaste when she ever gets any teeth. Maybe do the same thing with a muslin? TBH even DS just eats his toothpaste still

JKS - Good luck tonight fingers X. Think if you go the controlled crying route much easier to do now than another 6mths down the line. Well hopefully anyway

simpson · 13/08/2008 21:01

Oops meant to say "she will be standing..."

nicky6 · 13/08/2008 21:13

Well all ok here, charlie seems ironically getting better sleeping in the day, i think she is just wearing herself out more and we had our first roll back to front this week not bad at 6.5 months!! lazy sausage.

i know charlie usually good sleeper but she only yook 2-3oz at bedtime so ??????? I may be up a bit earlier than normal.

I take it rusks are bad - charlie has had a few of the organix ones.

but she is getting really good with lumps rice cakes, toast and I gave her chicken risotto hipp jar today - thought i better give her a few jars as we are about to go on holiday next weekend.

I had a brain wave - i rang boots at terminal 2 through after security and they sell all the baby food and no restrictions so then i dont have to worry about baggage going astray.

weather rubbish here to.

My physio says that they must have really done a job on me at the birth as i have a torn hamstring and groin - he said normally injury found on rugby players who have been tackled high round the leg and dropped!!!!!

anyway signing off now
lets hope for sunshine and lots of sleep for those still not getting it.

LuckySalem · 13/08/2008 21:38

Got a call today from Surestart to say they need to do DD's 8 month check but she won't be 8 months then. Should I postpone it?

I don't really want it cos everytime I see a HV they shout at me for something but I know that DD needs this check. - Am moody and tired.

simpson · 13/08/2008 21:45

Lucky - how old will she be when she has it?? When Ds had his it was very relaxed just asked what he ate/drank, if he could drink from a cup, what sleeping was like, was he sitting, moving object from one hand to another etc. If your DD is not doing all of these things don't worry my Ds was not sitting up alone at this point. Lazy boy!!Think you might also get a free book pack from them which is worth getting, freebies are always good

Also forgot to mention think they check Lo's eyes to make sure they track/don't have squint...

LuckySalem · 13/08/2008 21:47

She'll be 7 and 1/2 months (just)

simpson · 13/08/2008 21:52

Is it your usual health visitor that does it? God sometimes I hate HV's passionately!! When DD was constipated the other week I went and all she said was "it's perfectly normal" I know it bloody is but a bit of sympathy for having a Lo screaming for 4 days wouldn't go amiss!! Let alone DD being in pain. Grrrrr...

From what you have said it seems like your DD is doing everything she should iykwim. Maybe just get it over with and don't volunteer info unless they ask. You might feel worse about appt if you delay it.

LuckySalem · 13/08/2008 21:54

Yeh I'll just get it sorted and over with.

I don't know whos doing it but whenever I go to babyclub where the HV's are I get shouted at for something so I don't really like it.

Housemum · 13/08/2008 21:56

Lucky - have a look in the red book that should give you an idea of what they will be checking - sounds like you have the gestapo of health visitors? Ours are pretty laid back - I think (dredging memory) she did something like ring a bell behind DD2, I know she put something small on the floor to see if she could use thumb & finger ("pincer grip") which she couldn't but was normal.

Nicky - rusks are bad but only in same way as biscuits are bad - you or I wouldn't eat biscuits all day (well, unles no one's looking!) so same applies - the odd few are not bad and can be useful eating practice!

Teeth - you can use tiniest smear of toothpaste (baby sort as adult has too much fluoride) on a flannel/muslin - I use a baby toothbrush just so she gets used to it. Not much to do really, jst give teeth a quick scrub. I try to do it when getting dressed and at bdtime but do forget occasionally!

Nicky - we're on holiday countdown too! Glad still BF as means don't need to think about what to do re bottles - flight is only 3 hours, hoping she'll sleep for some of it if I feed her to sleep as it crosses her nap time. Will take some jars but hope to buy stuff there (Malta) - figure she won't starve as if I can't find anything else I must be able to find a banana or a bread roll (she likes chewing on bread) until I get to a big shop. Will give her bits off my plate in the hotel and am hoping they'll have Weetabix for breakfast (if not will be the saddo buying a pack in the supermarket and taking it down each day!) She hasn't got a big appetite yet which is a first as her sisters were gluttons!

Have got a Trunki for DD2 which she is excitedly riding around the house!

simpson · 13/08/2008 22:02

Lucky - as I said before my Hv is pretty pants but doesn't sound as bad as yours though. I get DD weighed every other week only because I know 2 other mums and we meet up there. Quite often we just weigh the Lo's and slope off to the back and HV doesn't always come and talk to us. Ds's 8mth check was quite formal in that appt was made etc but think DD's will just be done at the clinic when I turn up and she is 8mths!!

Sorry Housemum - Might be being a bit thick but what is a trunki??

LuckySalem · 13/08/2008 22:05

I really hate my HV's. I went once and got told off for giving her a piece of toast cos she wasn't 6 months yet - OK granted not meant to wean before 6 months but I had and how could they expect her to sit there and watch the other kids eating it and her not to join in? grrrr

simpson · 13/08/2008 22:11

From when DD was 17 weeks I got BIG pressure to wean her and there was one time there was a red mark on her arm (it was from when DS tried to "hug" her) it was noted and put in red book. I know they have to be careful but it was tiny and babies get marks!! The Hv's I had with Ds were fab so they are not all bad but we have moved since then and its too far to go.

Kelix · 13/08/2008 22:32

Was told by my HV that DDs 8 month check will be at around 9 months! Work that one out lol HV doesnt seem too bad from what I can remember, she was quite complimentary (sp) actually which I was about. I thought she was going to run her fingers arounf the skirting boards and tops of doors then say - sorry your door tops are dusty no baby for you

I do drive for those thinking of a north meet up. Preston would be great for me, only a couple of junctions up the M65.

Nicky - Well done of first roll - lazy sausage lol Was it a lazy sausage roll (sorry)

Teeth - None here yet but I do clean gums occasionally with a tiny amount of baby toothpaste and a tiny tooth brush. It says on the toothpaste make sure your DC spits out the toothpaste after brushing, how exactly am I suppost to encourage a 6MO to spit? She just thinks its a treat and eats as much as she can!

Will try to catch up a bit better tomorrow but me and DP are having a beer tonight so I should really get me arse of MN and go give him some attention

gingeme · 13/08/2008 22:37

Ah lillyloo seems like only yesterday doesn't it? What ashame so many of us don't post any more
Tried ds5 on some Heinz spag boll for 7 month up today and he wolfed it down We went to a friends for lunch today and she had cooked pasta. Gave ds5 a couple of twists and he happily gummed at them also some bread which he squished in his fists and got frustrated that he couldn't get to it.
ds3 and I went to dentist today. All is well. I actualy use a tiny bit of toothpaste on a baby toothbrush for ds5. He loves it and I give it for him to chew on for a while too.
Anyone elses baby doing their best to flip on to their front while having their nappy changed? George is literaly on his head when I have his feet trying to turn over. Its so bloody frustrating
Watching the weather. Looks like another crap day tommorrow. Oh well off to bed. xx

gingeme · 13/08/2008 22:40

re spittong out toothpaste. My dentist asked if ds3 spat the toothpaste after he had brushed? I said he tries so he said don't worry if he doesn't as it means the flouride stays in his mouth for longer. So don't panic just yet Kelix

madmouse · 13/08/2008 22:54

I just took Nathan to the dentist with me yesterday and he advised to clean teeth with a piece of moist cotton wool and to avoid toothpaste like the plague in early days as the enamel has not hardened enough and it will scratch!

Feel half human today, nathan did not settle last night and at 11.30 I was sooo tired. dh took him (breaking my rule of no stimulation and staying in the bedroom but I could not think of anything else either) and I got to sleep. dh put him in his cot asleep at 1am and he woke for a feed at 4am, so I actually made a few hours. He woke at 6 for a top-up but then went to 7.40.

Gosh my little man works hard with his physio! I am teaching him to roll back to front and he is doing it now, just not quite fast enough, so his not-good arm ends up under him, but he is starting to realise that he can roll back to front, then front to back again and he likes it!

I am also helping him to do 'big arms' when they lie on their tummies and push their chests off the floor on straight arms and their heads up high. It is needed for crawling. Suddenly he could see inside the toy bucket and he wanted it , so I helped him sit on his knees, then he spent the next five minutes balancing himself with his weak arm while rummaging through the bucket with his good arm. My heart was bursting with pride. This physio lark seems to be working and he is really coming on, like he only needed a bit o help to make a few developmental leaps.

Packing tomorrow. have not cleaned as much as I wanted to, well wil have to clean after holiday , feeling a bit out of control with the housework though. and my diet but that is another story.

LaTrucha do we still meet at Birmingham New Street? I can probably get there for 10.15, wait for me if I am late.

I understand facebook is not your thing. Can you email me at [email protected] so we can swap phone numbers? It is not my normal email address as I have had that for many years and like to keep it spam free so don't want it 'harvested' on here.

I will be offline from Friday until the next Friday.

Night all!

madmouse · 13/08/2008 22:58

hi ginge sorry spent so long writing mammoth post missed you. yes nathan tries to roll away from nappy chage, even with poo on bum . but he cries when i dress him on his back and is happy to be dressed on his tummy (and it is not that hard)

kelix pmsl at sausage roll. my silly sense of humour entirely.

MrsMcJnr · 13/08/2008 23:00

Wow! This thread moves so fast and I have so much to read even though I?ve only been AWOL for a few days. I?ll post this whilst I am reading to let you know I am here, hope you are all well

Housemum · 14/08/2008 00:30

Madmouse - well done with the physio - sounds like he is coming along great!

Ginegeme - oh yes, like a pig on a rotisserie! She squirms and wriggles - I have to give her something to hold to get about 10 seconds to put the nappy on (the more unsuitable an item the better, she seems to know what's not a toy!)

Don't think crawling will be far off - she now gets on all fours and rocks backwards and forwards.

Sort of not-quite-separation anxiety going on here - she's actually fine if she can't see me, but if she can see me and someone else is holding her she cries. So at photoshoot today I plonked her down, the stylist was singing to her, and I slipped behind a screen - she was fine. Last time, I was next to the photographer and she cried after 10 seconds when she realised I was there and not holding her!

Simpson - I'm always paranoid about any marks! DD3 has a "blue spot" birthmark on her bottom - I made sure the HV wrote it in her red book as it does look like a bruise sometimes, and I could just imagine being questioned about how she has a hand sized bruise on her bum!

Simpson - this is a Trunki! Bought one from Blooming Marvellous with that discount code.

justkeepswimming · 14/08/2008 06:17

lucky - hv can be a pita sometimes but don't worry about the check. they have a chart that tells them what each age should be doing/could be doing/etc. and they will just adjust the line for her age (does that make sense? i know what i mean but not good at explaining it!)
ds1 had his at 9mo-ish i think cos they were running behind - too many babies, not enough hv.
it does feel like a test that you so badly want them to pass tho it's a funny feeling.
ds1 made me look dumb tho cos she asked loads of things 'can he do x?' and i said no, then he promptly went and did it in front of her , ah well.

so my no feeding plan went well i think.
ds2 woke at 12.30 i shushed him once, i woke a few other times waiting....
then he woke at 5.15, played until 5.30, i fed him then and brought him downstairs. figure 7-5.30 is pretty good, will try and push him to 6/6.30 so he matches ds1. can't believe we didn't actually have any crying (controlled or not!).
fingers crossed he gets the message...

dh off today, no plans, so i'm hoping to sneak back to bed later

i have a baby toothbrush, ds2 loves chewing it, have offered a smidgen of toothpaste once and he did like it but not really bothered.

yes - if sitting up, lower cot! only takes a reach out to sides and she'll be up

love trunkis - would so have loved one as a kid

right, watching men's gym olympics, a bonus of getting up early

justkeepswimming · 14/08/2008 06:18

oh and madmouse - well done physio and you! sounds like he's really coming along so well.
better than ds2 for sure

simpson · 14/08/2008 09:58

Hi all

Gingeme - I am definitely having problems changing nappy and also at night when I have to physically stuff DD into her sleeping bag. You get one leg in then the other pops out as she tries to roll over etc....

JKS - Glad last night was a bit better on the no crying/feeding front. Hopefully tonight will be even better.

Madmouse - Sounds like Nathan is doing really well with physio he is going to be a real live wire, if he isn't already

Housemum - Trunki looks great!! My Ds would love one.

Kelix - We don't have any teeth here yet either but have not started cleaning gums, maybe I should so she gets used to it

(waves at Mrs Mac!!)

Well DD is not being quite as good at night as she used to. She now wakes at 5am again whereas we had a good few weeks of her going to 7am I think its coz I have brought her tea forward to 4.30. She also has pureed fruit for tea but veg or yogurt might fill her up more.

The wingeing is starting to p**s me off it is constant. I cannot even have a cup of tea. I have put her in her cot upstairs just so I can eat some toast. She used to like looking at DS playing but now just wants to be held/have my undivided attention ALL the time. Grrrrrrrrrr...
