morning all. deb lol about the cabbages, they make you smell but boy do they work!!

it's hard to believe sometimes that i actually have another baby. it's easy to forget running around after ds too! i feel kind of sad that i don't get as much quality time with her as i did with him but i know in the long run they'll both be better off for having a sibling (and a mother that's not too doting on one or the other!).

ds is getting much better in general... now we just have to sort out his sleeping which has been a nightmare since she arrived. he's started to tell me every time she's crying (ah, mummy!!! baby's CRYING!!!) and asks where she is if she;s downstairs sleeping in her hammock.

allnew congratulations on the arrival of Alexander. Sorry Alexander had to go in ITU. He might be unsettled because he was used to the environment and noise of the hospital or might be due to the not very gentle delivery or his broken clavicle. My only piece of advice (since you requested) would be to see a cranial osteopath. I am sure he can only benefit from it especially after a difficult delivery

Essie glad to know I am not the only "mad" one with job interview. I hope your presentation preparation is going well. Re cranial osteopath it worked well for DD. Apparently SJ cried throughout treatment and was very upset (DH took him) but afterwards he felt better and you could see the difference already (but he had about four hours of being unsettled). I would stick with it though, sometimes the first few treatment are painful for them but after a few (say 3) you should really see the difference. I hope he slept better though

Debs how is the pain today?

I tried to feed SJ lying down last night, but as previously, the milk came it through his nose at the same time. Anyone had that problem? I think I need to call a BF counsellor as I am only getting 4 hours sleep at night and am a bit worn and I too was crying this morning and very crossed with insensitive DH.

Morning everyone,

Good to finally be moving from the antenatal section!

Managing to get a few minutes on the computer while he sleeps on my tummy. Had to come in here for cuddles to calm down after the trauma of having his nappy changed. Somehow whenever I do it he screams the house down, he is usually OK when DH does it, think my technique needs refining!

DH is at work and have managed to get up, have a shower and get dressed and feed, clean and change him. I am stupidly pleased every time I manage to have a shower and get dressed whilst on my own with him!

Rolf - I'm with you on wearing baby vomit today, embarassingly that happened yesterday, have just put my other trousers in the wash so might have something clean tomorrow. Seem to be struggling for clothes am wearing maternity trousers and just getting back into non-maternity tops, ignoring the fact they are a little tight and show up all the lumps and bumps!

hedgehog1979 · 11/07/2008 12:45

Have posted this antenatally as well, but can anyone help?

Afternoon all, Can I ask a question for all of those of you who feed lying down.
Do you do it on your back or on your side.

I have tried both and on my side Isaac did not seem to be feeding properly.
When I was on my back he almost has to mountain climb up my large norks (38G-H) and it doesn't seem to be very successful.

Any tips?

hedgehog my bf counsellor advised a rolled-up muslin to support the boob for lying down sideways feeding, esp. for those of us who are rather well-endowed with boobage! Worth a try - I found it better just laying boob on bed but need to roll further over than you might expect for it to work properly. I also use a pillow to prop Caitlin on her side (behind her) and bring her in v. close to me. Couldn't do it on my back, boobs end up under my arms!

On tummies, bodies etc: I was v. v. depressed about all of this last time but after a year was back to nearly normal without making any particular effort (but then got pg again ...) Remember it took nine months to change shape - this time I'm allowing another nine months at least to get anything resembling previous shape again!

hedgehog1979 · 11/07/2008 14:10

SA Thanks, Might try that later, although just got my BF cushion through the post from the NCT and that has helped save my wrists from his bobbing head and the weight my LO is putting on.
Plus the BF cushion has very cute pictures on it!!!

poppy34 · 11/07/2008 14:20

Hi all -adding me in. Also for those of you who have seen NCT bf counsellors is it worth it? Have got mastitus which may be an abscess and frankly desperate to try anything that will help clear it up as not keen on ending up getting it lanced...

hellbell re tea for breastfeedign - been told by midwife fennel tea is great for increasingn supply...not sure if true but I quite like the aniseed taste of it.

Josie57 · 11/07/2008 14:32

Wow Debs I am impressed at the size of your little boy and the fact you managed to pop him out without pain relief or stitches. I ventured out to playgroup with my two today so I am feeling pretty pleased with myself. Only trouble is my dh is due back from work any minute now and I haven't managed to do anything else except one load of washing. Oh well the housework can wait as I can feel the kettle calling me to make some tea and sit and enjoy the sunshine whilst we have it and whilst I have two kids in bed!

My ds1 has developed a disturbing habit over the last two nights of taking his quilt and pillow off the bed and sleeping on the floor by his door. It's all a bit weird as he has been sleeping in his big bed for months now and his sister arrived 3 weeks ago and didn't seem to cause an issue but I suspect this is somehow related. I guess it could be worse as at least he's not screaming at night as well.

thegreenfairy · 11/07/2008 18:57

sybil hope you found us - storm has been better since I started lifting her bum less when I change her. Obvious really, but I guess yanking her lower half in the air more than a few degrees cancels out any head elevation...

Shattered after Storm woke at 5am for an extra feed. THink she's punishing me for daring to finally write out her 'routine' yesterday . So so tired.

However, in better news, she had her ultrasound for congenital hip dysplasia today (standard for breech, plus DH had it) and Storm is totally fine.

thegreenfairy · 11/07/2008 19:06

rolf re back probs. I've also been getting a bad back from carrying Storm all the time - DH's recommendation (he's a personal trainer) is to tense your stomach muscles as if you're bearing down whenever you lift anything or stand up as it will support your spine. I've been doing it for a couple of days and now am managing to do it automatically. It's really helped a lot. It also helps to recondition stomach muscles at the same time.

Have got bloody earache and feel AWFUL and a bit teary. Really not looking forward to the night shift tonight

PiggyPenguin · 11/07/2008 19:09

Addng myself to the list, will try to get on a bit more as have been a bit absent lately. Are we still posting on the other thread or not?

I have been having a bit of a bfeeding meltdown, Jamie only feeding for 5-7 minutes a time and then screaming the house down if I tried to get him to feed for longer. In the end I got the hv to come round as I was really starting to panic that he was failing to thrive. She weighed him and he has put on 30 oz in the last 17 days. He is now a whopping 10 and a half pounds. I felt like such a idiot. She basically said, he's obviously a really effective feeder who only needs 5 minutes to get what he needs and he is screaming because you are shoving you nipple in his face when he is already full (but in a nicer way)! I was very embarrassed.

Anyway, hope everyone else is ok. Am interested in bfeeding lying down advice as have never managed to achieve this with any of my kids. I sadly have very small breasts and can't get the baby high enough to the nipple when lying down. Any tips?

Also Essie, sadly after two kids my breasts were pretty flat and empty. I may be joining you in the artificially enhance breast department after I finish bfeeding this time!

poppy34 · 11/07/2008 20:47

hi jivegirland welcome.. see we're birthday buddies with our dds... this your first?

feeling bit better as had long nap this afternoon and also dh/dss been home today so had some company/extra pair of hands. but hoping that super antibiotics might kick tonight...
sybil really interesting that your hv says that as feeding takes forever (she is clearly taking it but just takes up to 45 minutes...) so seems it not just an urban myth that they can feed quickly.

debinaustria · 11/07/2008 21:00

HI Jivegirl - welcome to the group.

jivegirl · 11/07/2008 21:27

Hi all.. poppy no, this is my 2nd, DD1 is 2 this month. Today was my first day on my own as DP now back at work . Survived visiting babygym in the rain, and DD1 falling in a puddle and refusing to walk to the car.. so now feel like I can conquer anything!

RE feeding taking forever - DD1 was like this, feeds would take an hour or more sometimes, whereas DD2 is the opposite - thank goodness!

Can see myself spending quite a bit of time on here over the coming months. Laptop is permanently on the sofa so Mumsnet is going to be hard to resist..

Amberc · 11/07/2008 22:23

Hello all - Are we done with the ante natal now? Not been on for the whole week. Had an emerency trip to my DH's mum's in Norfolk on monday night after my suicidal post. DH was really worried about me as i had not had any sleep and doing a week of night shifts nearly killed me. It's mad how rubbish i've been at being a mum so far but I have been reading here that a lot of you have similar experiences with crying (babies and self!), wind, lonliness etc etc so I don't feel like I'm the only one (thank god for MN!). Had an extra32 hours sleep each day at DH's mum;'s as she took him from 8-11am and there was an extra pair of hands when he screamed and generally I wasn't stuck in the house on my own. Having mare with my C section - really hurting so went to docs today who said it was strain from holding baby (he's nearly 11 lb now and not 4 weeks). I should rest completely - like how!!! Take Paracetemol (works for mild headaches not major abdominal surgery).

Anyway - have hired a night nanny 2 nights a week strting from Monday so will get two whole nights of sleep each week for the next few weeks (till we run out of money to pay for it). She seems nice and hopefully not a nutter - has anyone else hired help before and if so is there anything I should be looking out for?

Congrats to new hatchings. Talking of hatching - The pigeon nest on our balcony has the ugliest chick ever.

Essie3 · 11/07/2008 22:24

Hi Jivegirl, welcome! The June thread was my saviour (still is), and I'm almost permanently on Mumsnet too. Don't get any laundry or cooking done, but I manage mumsnet... ah, it's important for the sanity!

Don't I have a birthday buddy? Never mind - my own birthday has no important events of note, and nobody famous to share it with. In fact, the only famous person who shared my birthday was...Harold Shipman. Yes, the killer. Fab.

Amberc · 11/07/2008 22:25

Clearly an extra 3 hours sleep not 32!!

Amberc · 11/07/2008 22:26

Essie emailed you re meeting up - prob missed the boat!

thegreenfairy · 11/07/2008 22:59

Reposting from the antenatal thread...

Ugh, got earache. Last thing I bloody need!

amber / essie / sybil It's just occured to me this evening to mention something which could help you guys with the difficult nights - having seemed to be a cheery soul storm had a few nights where she seemed almost colicky - definitely windy and unhappy.

I'd read that if you eat lots of dairy then your milk can have too much lactose in it and that can disagree with LO. So, I've had a pretty much dairy free few days since and, hey presto, no wind!

It's really hard for me as I'm a dairy fiend, but it really seems to have helped - just thought it was something you could try.

amber re the c section, I found it so hard carting storm around in the first couple of weeks. Don't forget that ibuprofen is fine while BF (or are you FF, can't remember?). I'm almost six weeks post op and still taking arnica daily, rubbing in arnica cream, scoffing paracetomol when it hurts and also applying ibuprofen gel around the wound area. Maybe these could help?

And don't feel like you're a bad mum. The first few weeks are so damn hard. Storm will be six weeks on Sunday and, while we still have bad days/ nights, it's nothing like as hard as those first couple of weeks, really. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

poppy34 · 12/07/2008 12:25

reposting from antenatal - mber you're not a crap mum... sounds like you've done exactly the right thing with going to your mil and getting the night nanny in (thought has crossed my mind)... and haven't felt suicidal but do feel like i can't cope and have a good cry with edie on night feeds when she is workign up into a fret... can totally relate to the job thing and whole thought that I can't cope now so how can I cope later..but know that sleep when I can get it helps plus being on here makes me realise that I'm not alone.

Rant time - had well meaning friend make me feel guilty -am mixed feeding edie on advice of midwife and seems to be working ok -she is happy and growing well and milk supply seems to be fine... yet have friend suggesting that not only am I using wrong type of formula but will bugger my milk supply. Now the logical part of me knows that midwife is v.experienced and her advice seems to be working pretty well for edie but the guilty part of me thinking am I doing right thing although is only hearsay from my mate.

Is there any particular advice re formula -apart from the special kinds without lactose etc etc?

Essie is it bad that I giggled about harold shipman being your birthday mate?

TGF hope earache clearing up...

deb will take your advice and see if can manage rugby hold with edie later to ease the breast issue. Thing is I'm now confused as still produces milk when press behind the mastitis bump so am not sure if is or isn't a blocked duct (may actually be an abscess as suspected). Still thanks to window being open or the new antibiotics (prob former) had less of a sweaty old man night...

sophiewd · 12/07/2008 14:54

Hello all, I am finally sat down and having a break for a few days and boy is it nice. Doing B&B when you are 8 days post section is tough but we are now up in Kent for the weekend with both children. Sebastian is OK, he is settling down at night now and going longer between feeds, he tends to graze during the day but that is OK. We are visiting SIL and BIL and again suffering from hangover stupid me. We have been to see other frinds this mornig and have some great photos of DD feeding a deer by hand. When I eventually get the internet sorted out on my desktop will pots some photos of them both.

Sympathies with Amber and TGF on your c section woes, mine is taking longer this time to get over but not hugely painful, taking longer cos lugging DD around at 15KGs and travel cots etc so hopefully this rest will do us good.

Camp Bestival next weekend, so will be boogying to Chuck Berry on Friday night.
