good to hear about your night nanny amber - am but also interested to hear about how it goes...and the combover is defo a good look (amazing how soap dodging babies are... just giving edie a top and tail produces a reaction that would have her calling childline if she could talk)

We tried her in a sling and she absolutely loved it..so pleased as that is going to make life so much easier than being tied to her when she is clingy.

TGF interested re growth spurts as definitely noticed edie more hungry the last few days (taking huge feed from breast then usually wanting a top up too)... was bit concerned re her appetite but sounds like she may be growing (given how small some of her newborn stuff going it would appear yet more evidence of how my logical side disappeared at about 20.14 on 26 june...)

should have read this earlier as so good to get the moral support (feelign very lazy as just feeding/sleepign at home after disturbed night and not feeling like any visitors etc when felt should be more into things as she is 2 weeks old).. also good to hear that almost all the babies aren't good at settlng in evening (if I hear my mother going on abotu nighttime routines one more time...... )

Evening all

Re growth spurts, I'm sure every baby is different, but with storm each one has been preceded by a couple of days of her seeming to be extra hungry. Then it ramps up several gears and she goes through six to 10 hour periods for a day or two where she wants to feed almost constantly and barely sleeps. It's unmistakeable and bloody hard work.

From what I've read, when they do sleep during growth spurts, you shouldn't wake them, as their bodies are recovering and they are getting the release of growth hormone they need to put on weight (it's the same thing that gives you a sick feeling after you wake up from a long nap).

Storm now asleep after DH gave her a bottle of EBM - hurrah!

Hahaha, Poppy - I agree about soap dodging but I thought it was just boys. Change Iestyn's nappy, and anyone passing in the street - or even the next street along - would think we were pulling out his fingernails. He doesn't cry when he's dirty or wet either. Hmm!

Essie not all boys are soap dodgers, just bathed Isaac and he screams when I take him out and wrap him in his towel. He splashes and wriggles and smiles, and he is not even 3 weeks old yet. But do agree that they don't appear to cry when they need changing, I have a very highly developed sense of smell though and can tell when he needs changing.

Yesterday I just strapped him into his car seat, walked round to the drivers door and there was the most unholy fart and smell, braved it, drove to the shopping centre where DH works and got daddy to change him!!

poppy glad it is not just my MIL going on about getting him into a routine, my mum doesn't care as long as she gets lots of cuddles

A word of caution to all of you feeding your lo's lying down and falling asleep. I did this last night, he was latched on fine, woke up about 20 mins later and he was still sucking, and there was pain, checked and he had rearranged himself to give me a 'lovebite' on my boob as he was sucking above the nipple. Will lanisoh work to make it less painfull??

Just waiting for DH to get back from work (he doesn't trust anyone else to do the banking) so I can have a shower, then we can head West, I cannot wait

Essie3 your comment about the dummies really made me laugh. Il's also hate babies using dummies and really are put out the we give one to DS. I don't care what others think as it really does help him settle and peeing off the Il's really helps too!!!

Poppy - 2 weeks si still really young, you should be feeding and resting!! Worse thing you can do is try to do too much and get tired as you then have little chance to recover.

TGF - 6oz in two days- bloody hell! I'm lucky that I seem to have a very effective and quick feeder so even though Jamie is doing well (although not that well!) he doesn't take very long to get the milk in him. AS a third child he has to get on with it when the opportunity presents itself I guess. Still, he makes up with it with his 2 hourly feeds overnight.

sybil - interesting what you say about your baby feeding quickly as my dd (second child) also feeds a lot quicker than my ds1. the timing is about 15 min vs 40 min! I can also hear the milk squirting out just like when I am expressing. How dothey know that they have to feed quickly?

I think we are joining everyone on the growth spurts as i think i have now fed 4 times since 9am and Emma usually goes for 3 hours! It's a bit of a shame as the il's have taken my ds1 out for the day so i was supposed to be catching up on some housework and painting the side gate. instead i am glued to mn!!!!!!

Morning

Very VERY tierd this morning so much so that ended up in tears, think we have done too much lately and its all caught up with me.Also after her 6 week growth spurt Fleur has found it hard to go back into her normal pattern of feeding so up more at night.

Think it was rolf or Josie cant remember who said they found it hard to settle baby at night as wanted comfort from mummy. Fleur has started this. I was doing the whole bedtime routine all combined ie feed, bath, massage, cuddles then bed but she wont settle after so much mummy attention. So im going to feed her downstairs and give her "playtime" then bath massage and bed. And DP is going to do last bit sometimes too. Maybe an idea for you whoever it was to try too??

I know she is still little to sleep upstairs and understand bedtime but she really doesnt sleep downstairs very well at all, any noise wakes and annoys her and cause she is so alert she wants to be in on all the action!!!! Am i the only one who has already moved Fleur to her own room??? Felt bad about it at first and extremly worried but she sleeps much more soundly in there and i follow all the other SIDS guidelines.

Plus had to go back to labour ward to have scan as have been having stabbing pains and a constant ache down below bit like period but feeling very heavy (sorry if tmi) Scan showed no remains left etc and stiches all healed fine. Dr diagnosed unknown pain!!!! and said take paracetamol (even though i told him paracetamol does nothing) and come back if worse. Anyone else had or has this? Could it be ovulation I am now 6 weeks post pregnancy

Fleur is doing well being very good and even getting too big for some of clothes!!!She does have a stuffy nose at night and first thing in the morning, sounds a bit croaky, but she is feeding well and is her normal self. Should i worry bout it and take her to drs? I do have saline drops but dont know how to use them.

Re dummy use, if fleur didnt have one she would either be constantly on the breast or chewing her fingers when she wants to sleep. We make sure that we try to use it when she really wants it and if it falls out we dont jump to put it back in we wait to see if she really wants it back. And she had hers from 5 days old and took a bottle at 3 days due to being in intensive care and it hasnt interefered with her feeding at all.I do beleive in the training them whilst young approach.

Last query how many of you are speaking two or more languages to your LO. DP and i thought it would be hard but actually its ok I speak to her in English (sometimes spanish if in company of drs etc) and Dp speaks to her in DUtch, we also play dutch adn english lullabies.

Wow mega long post hope everyone ok today and its all going well xxxxxx

Oh and can we post on the antenatal thread to say we are over here now??? Or are we still waiting seems like some post on both and others on only one so its a bit confusing to read etc!!!

DLM thanks for the tip about breafeeding lying down and puttling Lo inthe crook of the arm. I tried two nights in a row and it worked!! No leakage and slighly more sleep. You are my hero! Sorry you had to take LO to ER but glad everything turned out ok.

Neen they are gorgeous. Sorry Esther has to have an op. SJ has a hernia too but we have been advised to wait until he is a year old and see what happens

Debs glad the bobs are better

Essie glad you are better. If the dummy makes Iestyn and yoy feel better then I would definitely stick with it. Every little helps and small mercy to have a happy child and sane mum should be taken!

amber sorry you are having a tough time

Really with all of you with DH on the phone all the time. Mine either works every evening or is on the phone to the whole earth. Never has a minute for me or SJ so I am starting to feel really lonely

Hello Postnatal!

amber how did last night go? I am very jealous as I have a horrible memory of sitting on my kitchen floor sobbing when DS1 was 2 weeks old and frantically looking through the phone book for a night nanny. Unfortunately there weren't any in Aberdeen so we had to suffer through, but I really wish I could have hired some help as I desparately needed it and I think it made the next few months much harder than they should have been. I think you've made a really good decision.

Today's my first day on my own with two boys and no nursery, but DS1 has had an extra long nap (2 hours!) so I've had a bit of a break. Fraser was up crying for some of it, then fed, and now is finally sleeping, so I guess it's time for DS1 to wake up.

I've been feeling a bit blue about Fraser lately, as when DS1 is around he's a very needy baby and I was thinking he had colic. But when it's just he and I, he's often calm and happy - so I think it's just that he doesn't get the attention he deserves when his brother's awake. I know it'll get better, but it's so hard right now to be a good mum to both of them!!!!

aberdeenhiker · 14/07/2008 13:45

oh, and a quick question, those of you feeding lying down at night, how do you handle burping? I'd love to feed lying down (and Fraser ends up sleeping with us by around 5am every night anyways) but I can't be bothered to then sit up and burp him and I think he needs it. If you feed lying down do you just skip the burping?

(I'm finding that feeding lying down is much easier this time because my breasts are that much saggier the second time around. At least there's some benefit...)

Gosh, I didn't realise how much you were all chatting on here.

I think dummies are great - Dorothy has some with 'my little boy' on as I bought the wrong kind and took them out of the packet before I saw what they said on them .

The breastfeeding counsellor talked about peristalsis - which is the sucking some babies do to settle themselves to sleep. Dorothy would either be sucking me, her fingers or the dummy - so the dummy wins! DS stopped taking a dummy at about 12 weeks last time.

Dorothy has dreadful wind. Have been reading about how I shouldn't have garlic or brassicas - all my favourite healthy foods! Oh well, Upside reaches for the chocolate biscuits again.

Seriously though, how are you all dealing with wind? Have just started on the infacol.

Afternoon all

Oh dammit. Went to BF support group sesh this morning. Seemed to go well - got some advice on improving storm's latch as she's been smacking her lips, and I've got a sore left nipple. She fed for seven or eight mins and fell asleep out cold.

BF counsellor said it was cos she'd fed well. I thought it was cos the room was hot - but thought she knew best...

So, got home and of course she woke up again because our house isn't like an oven, and I tried to use the new positions the BF counsellor had showed me. Storm hated it and screamed and screamed the whole feed when she wasn't latched on. She must have not had enough earlier, and got over hungry. So now my CS scar is killing me because she was writhing around on my lap for an age.

I couldn't take her to baby group for HV/ weighing etc this afternoon as she was too upset.

And DH keeps suggesting FF every time she's the slightest bit difficult to 'give me a break' and doesn't understand that I REALLY don't want to do it. We've given her two FFs so far - both times when I was at my wit's end, but it made me feel sick doing it (not judging those who are of course) and I want to keep it for real emergencies, not just a difficult feed.

DH has also gotten into the habit of shouting 'she's absolutely starving' when she cries for about 30 seconds when I pop to the loo in the morning before I give her the first feed. What am I supposed to do? Piss the effing bed?

tjuice, just adding you in order of birthdate!

greenfairy I take the time to take care of myself before starting to feed. No one's ever died of hunger in one minute! I think it must be frustrating for the guys though that when the LOs are hungry, they can't do anything about it. (Although they're not always hungry - I hated it with DS1 when DH wanted me to feed him all the time. He knows better than to fuss about that now). I'm refusing to bottle feed at all this time because Fraser's latch is so bad - I'm afraid if he found out there was an easy option that'd be it for breastfeeding!

Oh, a very bad morning (hey, it's 3.30pm...which says it all) with endless screaming (that's me, and also Iestyn). He slept from 10.30 for the first time with his little dummy last night, which was great, but now I'm having angst, because the only thing which stops all the screaming today is...a dummy. I wanted to just give it to him at night, but I got desperate. How do people use dummies? I am so clueless.
Incidentally, he hasn't slept at all since 8.30 this morning, and seems to have colic.

Paro we're bilingual here. I'm trying to keep English to a minimum, because it's dominant, and he'll pick it up quite naturally (I did). Ask away - my mum is an expert on bilingualism in young children, and I'm quite clued up too!

UDC - yes, we're very windy here too. I've tried gripe water, but I'm not convinced. Do people wind during night feeds? Because he's very sleepy, and it kind of adds time to the feeding... .

Hedgehog I've also had a demonstration of how hard a baby can suck - Iestyn gave himself a lovebite.

It's a night nanny or DS doing night feeds tomorrow night. Hooray!

Time to go for a walk, methinks. Iestyn has spat out the dummy, and is kicking away in his moses basket. At least he's not crying!

AH - I fed lying down at night and we both fall asleep in the process so there's no winding going on!!

Hi everyone. Can I re-join you all please? I was a bit slapdash at keeping up through the antenatal thread, so I'm hoping I can keep up with you all now, although the chances are slim with 2 LOs about!

Daniel is almost 5 weeks old now (can't believe how quickly it has flown past!) and is doing well although he is still trying to settle himself into a regular feeding pattern. Some days he wants to be fed every 1 1/2 - 2 hours and other days he can go 3-4 hours between feeds. He tends to suffer from quite bad wind which can be difficult at times. He has days when he is really distressed with it and others, like today when his eyes are rolling and flickering and he is smiling away and doesn't seem too fussed with it.

Generally though, he is doing well. He doesn;t tend to sleep that much in between feeds and we are sometimes finding it hard to get him off. He has to be bounced in his chair quite hard, the gentle approach doesn't work and he gets upset, but is happier when we are flinging him around. I was kind of hoping that by now, we would be getting into some kind of night time routine, but he still wakes 2-3 times to be fed.

On the whole he is a good baby though and totally different to DD!

I'm off now to catch up on the rest of the thread. Congrats to you all, as I haven't really been here since I had Daniel.

Re dummies - Luke looks so cute sucking his especially when he's asleep that I couldn't care less what anyone else says!

Bought new bottles today - anti colic ones which don't let in air so we'll see what happens. Luke cannot stop farting and now he 'follows through' as well so he needs his nappy changed all the time! Appartenly it's poo and wee which makes the bad ammonia that caused nappy rash so poos no matter how small should be changed immediately.

Luke had a dreadful night last night and I wondered if it was a growth spurt thing. The night nanny is tonight for all those interested so I will report back tomorrow.

Essie - to finish off your chav look for the baby you should invest in one of these and then take him to your MIL's for dinner...cgi.ebay.co.uk/BNWT-Boys-Nova-Check-Shirt-Burberry-3-months-Smart_W0QQitemZ280243698066QQcmdZViewIte m?hash=item280243698066&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318
