October '04 babies - anyone fancy a kip?!!

I certainly do. Bean is becoming more and more unsettled in the night as the weeks go by and it is taking its toll. Florence, you have my utmost admiration for still being alive, let alone managing a trip to NZ!! Hope its going well.

Bean is 3 months tomorrow, and people are already asking me if I am going to start weaning him soon? I would like to keep bf until he is 6 months, but how do I know if he needs to start sooner? Or will I know that is a stupid question when I have a permanently hungry baby on my hands?!!
What is everyone else planning to do?

Btw, am reading a marvellous, marvellous book called "What Mothers Do (especially when it looks like nothing)" by Naomi Stadlen. It talks about what a shock it all is, what we provide for a our babies and crucially, what I find missing from so many other books, how we actually feel - exhausted, sometimes angry towards db, unsure of ourselves etc etc. It does not tell me what I "should" be doing - hurrah!!! Cannot recommend it highly enough. Is doing me the world of good and we like that.

Well, DD is six months today! Seems to be settling fine at the childminders and has scoffed her bottles down at great speed - a bit frightening that as I'm slightly worried she'll begin to prefer them to me. No sign of separation anxiety at all - is this usual at this age? Also celebratory spoonful of babyrice, although the spoon was a much more attractive proposition than the baby rice on it - that just seemed to end up on her chin. Have to admit I am completely besotted with her and think she is just the cutest baby around - poor DS suffers in comparison. DD still not sleeping through at night but is getting better and better at napping during the day - slept today for 1.5hrs in the morning, 1hr in the pm at the childminders and another 30min later. Surely this must pay off at some stage in terms of better sleep at night???

BTW one thing I learnt from swimming lessons with DS at this tender age was to tip water over their heads in the bath (we use a cup and shout "ready go" to give her a warning it is coming) and take them into the shower so they enjoy it and don't become phobic about getting water in their eyes. They splutter a bit at first but gradually become resigned to it. Haven't taken DD swimming as Little Dippers appear to have cancelled their Saturday classes and as a part-time working mum with toddler commitments find it a bit hard to make other times. Also while we're on this subject, IMO the Kooshies nappies which tie around are better than the Aqua nappies because you have to imagine what you would rather do when your "little one" has done a big one in their nappy - pull off the nappy (smearing it everywhere) or untie it?

well babymole scoffs everything like a good 'un and we have another tooth! He's getting on really well at childminders but i have to say the novelty factor of work has well and truly worn off! Altho working 3 days is quite good as i just get into the swing of it and i'm finished for the week! Its quite nice on a wednesday telling everyone to have a good weekend when they've still got to work 2 days - not that i rub it in, obviously.

Bellie · 15/04/2005 14:27

Hi - hope everyone is Ok not been posted on for a couple of days - I guess we are all just so busy with dd or ds's that mn has had to take second place .
I left dd at the leisure centre creche yesterday - first time that I have left her with anyone other than dh and went for a swim - spent the whole time thinking about dd and when I went back to collect her she hadn't even missed me but [happy] as she can be left and I can have some time on my own. My parents are up for the weekend as dh is running the marathon and it means I can go and watch him - wish him luck!!

beansprout · 17/04/2005 08:41

Best of luck to your dh Bellie! Let us know how he gets on?

Well i only have 2 weeks left at home before i go back to work
I am going back 4 days tues-fri. Im really looking forward to it ...lol.

Ds still has his chest infection so he is on his 3rd lot of antibiotics. We were going to take him swimming today but not now cos of the chest.

He has really taken to his solids now as he had gone off them for a while. He has b/fast and lunch and loves mashed up rusks! mmm yummy!

Glad the weather is picking up a bit (well down in sunny bognor regis) and we have all been going out for walks along the seafront most evenings. Ds went in his pushchair for an hour without crying the other day which is fantastic as before he would cry until i got him out.

Still no sign of teeth but im sure they will come in the next couple of months. He will be 6 months on tuesday (5 months corrected though) and hasnt time flown past.

biglips · 17/04/2005 14:00

hi everyone - havent been around for couple of days as 1) internet went awol for 24 hrs and 2) ive been busy.... now i can sit down and relax ...

well there is a abit of seperation anxiety going on with baba as last friday, i went to Aquafit with mum and put baba in a creche in the leisure centre (i already gave her brekkie and milk before i arrived to the creche), i went for an hour and we finished aquafit, my mum was waiting for me by the creche and heard a screaming child over the tannoy, she was thinking 'poor child!' and mum could see the girl feeding my baba.... only to realised that that screaming child was mine ... her face was soaked and had been screaming for the past half an hour till i walked into the creche and she stopped.. i knew she was gonna be like that as if i take her to peoples houses, she cry even when im there but she feels comfortable in her own home... next week im gonna find a creche and get her to learn to be comfortable in a different environment with me and without me... (wish me luck)

yesterday - i managed to puree the tomato and potato for her tea and she wolfed it down (hooray)
so no more powders foods as real foods is more heavier than powder foods but they are so tasty - esp rice pudding (yum yum!)

will be weighing baba tmrw as its only mondays that babies can get weighed at health clinics

bellie - Gud luck to your DH for the marathon

and plus no signs of teeths either

biglips · 17/04/2005 14:02

biglips · 17/04/2005 14:05

biglips · 17/04/2005 14:06

and i can feel her back tooth coming thru but its been there for couple of weeks so dont know when it gonna surface

biglips · 17/04/2005 14:10

geogteach · 17/04/2005 19:37

Bellie hope DH did ok
DS was 6 months yestaday, how time flies. Now officially in the grown up eaters club as he had his first marmite rice cake today, which is what my other 2 live on! Been a bit unsettled, I think more teeth coming.
This week have to go to a meeting about going back to work, DS1 gets new grommets and DH is going to Zurich for 2 nights, wish me luck!

Maisiemog · 17/04/2005 21:18

Hi all
babyPog, it seems, did not get off Scot free from the jabs after all. He has had weird sleep patterns this week and consequently, so have I. Thud! (that's my head on the computer desk)
I have given him medised, or sedimed or whatever it's called this week and it worked like a dream - he actually got about six hours of unbroken shuteye.
But, CALPOL, is it just me or does anyone else have horrible stained pink clothes from using it???
My favourite baby suit with dinosaurs, has a pink sleeve now....
He had a little bit of pureed banana, with 'mommy's milk' - his first food thing. He only had a tiny spoonful and seemed to think it was interesting. How much are you supposed to give a baby when you first start weaning?
I suppose I'll have to go to the HV and ask her wah! I bought some codliver oil for babies today as well - now how do you give that to a baby? On a spoon? In food? by injection? In Brandy?

KathH · 17/04/2005 21:49

hi all. have had week from hell this week sleep wise. dont know if its his teeth or his reflux or whether he's just a crap sleeper! i know you shouldnt compare but when eldest 3 were 6 1/2 mths i could guarantee they would sleep thru, with babymole i go to sleep expecting to wake up! Have found the baby version of nurofen is better than calpol altho we can only give half the dose because of his medication for reflux. Have another review at hospital tomorrow. Hope everyone's ok - by the way we crawled today!

biglips · 17/04/2005 21:51

maisie - i started off with 3 teaspoons (when baba was 4 months old) of what ever baba is having, mine started off with baby rice and she wasnt having any of it so i gave her veg casserole (Cow & gate powder meal) and she wolfed it down... now she is on 6 teaspoons plus her bottle.

biglips · 17/04/2005 21:53

kath - wow...crawled eh!! mine is learning but cannot sit up as yet - nearly there let us know how you got on at the hossy tmrw

biglips · 17/04/2005 22:50

any advice girls about the separation anxiety?

cazzybabs · 18/04/2005 21:05

Grace can't sit up yet - she can is you plomk her in a sitting upright position but them she decides to get a toy and falls over. We both of colds - god knows how she is feeling but I feel really shit. I am all hot and achy and have a rather sore throat which is being soothed by some white wine...poor baby. We keep getting joinned by snot trials (sorry TMI?) when I am bf her.

cazzybabs · 18/04/2005 21:06

Biglips - whose seperation anxiety yours or the babies . I am cleary such a terrible mother because Grace never had any and my older daughter never wants to come home from nursery - its quite embarrasing.

florenceuk · 18/04/2005 21:11

Wow crawling! DD still at flailing around stage but still manages to move - mostly backwards by wriggling I think. Can't sit up but slumps forward, can support herself for about a nanosecond on her hands then slowly topples over.

Biglips, no real advice on separation anxiety except that they will get used to new environments eg gym creche if taken often enough. Actually, my DS didn't suffer from this until 18mths - up till then I could leave him with anyone and he was fine. DD looks like being the same.

Weaning going very slowly BTW - DD not showing very much enthusiasm at all, apart from pear! Sleeping patterns also no discernible change, still wakes at 10.30, 2.30, 4.30, 5.30am etc etc - sigh. I will be sleepwalking to work next week at this rate.

Maisiemog, when you are at the chemists next ask them for a syringe - much easier getting the Calpol down them (Nurofen is good too - comes with its own syringe).

Bellie, how did your DH do? Has he recovered yet?

Bellie · 18/04/2005 21:13

DH finished in 3 hours 34 minutes! What a star! And he beat Gordon Ramsay!! DD had a great day with Nanny too so a good weekend all round .
Sorry Biglips no advice about the separation axiety - sounds like a good plan to find somewhere that you can stay with her for a while and then maybe leave once she is settled.

florenceuk · 19/04/2005 08:48

Bellie, that's a very good time - I'm impressed!

biglips · 19/04/2005 08:55

cazzy - no its not me but baba is showing separation anxiety but i feel really bad about it... and hope you 2 get well soon XXX

biglips · 19/04/2005 10:27

bellie - well done to your DH.

i have rcvd letter from CTF so will be getting the voucher in couple of days... just gotta find a bank

gotta go and painting DP's DD bedroom now which is a massive bedroom (groan!) as gonna be same colours as babas bedroom..

biglips · 19/04/2005 10:30

last nite went to Ann Summers party but didnt buy anything as i thought "i cant be arse!" so i thought ill wait till baba is 1 and then i will do all the hanky panky stuff yaaawwwnnnn!!!!

Maisiemog · 19/04/2005 12:07

Hahaha Biglips! So you don't want to wear a sexy red devil basque and stockings then? Never mind just get Thorntons chocolates instead, much more fun.
Pog has now started eating (on Sunday night). Has had banana, butternut squash, sweet potato, peas and porridge (och aye - He's Scottish you see, unlike me and his dad). Very hungry makes a noise like nrhhhhhhhhhh! when we stop feeding him and tries to jump headfirst into the bowl.
This morning I was trying to sneak a bowl of sugarpuffs (dp's choice), but he spotted them and nrhhhhhhh! He is eating about 10 - 15 stupidly small rubber feeding spoon size spoonfuls. Then I stop, because I don't want to give him too much?? And he has a full bf.
Should I just feed him until he stops going nrrrrhhhhhh!? Will he explode? He did a butternut squash/pea baby spitup all over me last night - very novel! Do babies know when to stop?
Sitting up is getting better, can sit for a bit if he doesn't spot a toy, otherwise he keels over slowly, like a drunk. Thud!
Crawling, hates 'tummy time' most of the time. Just lies on his face going 'waaaaaaaah!'
