October '04 babies - anyone fancy a kip?!!

I certainly do. Bean is becoming more and more unsettled in the night as the weeks go by and it is taking its toll. Florence, you have my utmost admiration for still being alive, let alone managing a trip to NZ!! Hope its going well.

Bean is 3 months tomorrow, and people are already asking me if I am going to start weaning him soon? I would like to keep bf until he is 6 months, but how do I know if he needs to start sooner? Or will I know that is a stupid question when I have a permanently hungry baby on my hands?!!
What is everyone else planning to do?

Btw, am reading a marvellous, marvellous book called "What Mothers Do (especially when it looks like nothing)" by Naomi Stadlen. It talks about what a shock it all is, what we provide for a our babies and crucially, what I find missing from so many other books, how we actually feel - exhausted, sometimes angry towards db, unsure of ourselves etc etc. It does not tell me what I "should" be doing - hurrah!!! Cannot recommend it highly enough. Is doing me the world of good and we like that.

Baths here every other day, he loves them and since i've started solids he does get mucky. Solids is going much better than I hoped and he even had apple as finger food today. Breast feeding is not so positive, anyone else got a bad mannered baby, constantly looking all over the shop with my nipple in his mouth, oww! Not to mention the biting, we're up to 2 bottles a day now but I feel a fast acceleration coming on.
DS1 birthday today, much over excitement and piles of new toys but feel that i'm getting my life back now party organisation is over.
Toots don't fret about the meet up, perhaps we should try something in an evening without babies for now and maybe have a long term plan for a 'summer' out door meet up which could accomodate siblings more easily?

Maisiemog · 10/04/2005 20:22

Hi all,
I've just found this thread and I thought I would join in . I've noticed there are no names on mumsnet, is it not allowed In case we get stalked?#
I saw the thing about bathing the baby - I tried a teeny tiny baby bath and it killed my back. I then got a bath float, which goes in the big bath, and now ds is too big for it, so he just goes in with me or dp. He seems to love it, just lays on my legs and does enormous sploshes and soaks the bathroom . So he probably has about three big baths a week and lots of face and hand wipes - to clean up the spit-up.
My ds was just under three weeks early: due November 18th, but arrived on Halloween woooo! So I'm kind of following the development of a 16 week old baby instead of a 19week old baby? I have no idea what he weighs (a lot), but he is breastfed and hasn't had anything to eat yet, and doesn't look very interested, I think he still has the tongue thrust thing. He's a terrible sleeper and always have been but both I and my dp are both total insomniacs, so we think he's got our genes. He loves to get up at night and party for about 4 hours, luckily I am off until May 20th. I'm in Edinburgh incidentally, in case anyone else is. Sorry rambling on...

Maisiemog · 10/04/2005 20:27

Oh yes, ds is 23 weeks old today, I forgot to say that (I don't want anyone doing themselves an injury trying to work it out) . He doesn't have teeth, but seems to be working on one or two - poor old thing.

KathH · 10/04/2005 21:50

hiya masiemog. babymole seemed to be suffering for weeks with his teeth (or should i say tooth?). I take it you have a sicky baby as well - William has reflux and up till a few weeks ago i was constantly covered!

Come on then biglips - where are you going on holiday - i saw your other post about baby passports! When we went to Majorca when ds1 was little we went to a photo shop - Supasnaps or something - to do his passport photo as they took it while he was laying down. We've just booked for Lanzarote in October - went a couple of years ago and loved it altho didnt have a babymole on my knee for 4 hrs!

cazzybabs · 10/04/2005 21:55

Welcome Masiemog - what do you do? I am a teacher and am back tomrorrow after 3 weeks on holls. I have a dd who is 3 in May and another who was born 7/10. I am in Cambirdge BTW.

jbadgirl · 11/04/2005 09:31

Hello maisiemog, my ds was 4 weeks prem but was due 16th nov!

Well the sleeping is going well, last night he went all night again but the night b4 he woke up once at 2am!

He keeps being sick though yesterday he just kept on spitting up quite a lot of sick all day, and about 20 mins ago he puked loads, not sure if its reflux or just the yuk from his chest infection, he has never been a sicky baby.
In january he was prescribed some omeprazole for "reflux" but i didnt think he had it so the pead decided that we should stop it. Hes not bothered by the sick but i only have so many clothes!

biglips · 11/04/2005 11:51

welcome maisiemog - mine was 12 days overdue as was due on 19th Sept but had her on 1st oct (was induced) .... so mine is 27 weeks old

Cazzy - thinking of going over to France with Mum as she need to sort out her house over there and all that crap !!, so DP and baba is coming too... as DP needs a break from work as he fed up of it.

Had a good night sleep for a change as baba had a cold and for 2 nights didnt get to sleep until 2am, plus she hardly had any sleep in the day time too but shes better today as she slept thru last night from midnite till 9.30am - hooray!

biglips · 11/04/2005 11:52

hopes everyones baba is ok too (and yourselves of course! )

Maisiemog · 11/04/2005 20:33

Hi again,
I work in a University library part-time and I was studying for a Masters, it was on hold until this month: I'm now supposed to be starting the dissertation part-time (urk!).
My baby: Pog (although he has a host of other names) isn't too bad in terms of reflux, I feed him in dribs and drabs and do Camptown Races on my knee, for about ten minutes after every feed, which seems to bring up most of the wind. He was really bad last week, when I didn't have time to wind him and he deposited most of his milk on me - in Boots - several times.
He has just been for his final Jab and has been howling for a couple of hours - poor old thing. He has just gone to sleep phew!
I'm off to the HV next week to get him weighed for the first time since January - I couldn't be bothered before and too much stress. We are probably going to try him with some food next week, like banana or avocado or melon or whatever. We'll see how that goes. Are your's all eating steak and kidney pudding by now. I'm thinking about making some baby cereal like rice and porridge does anyone do that?
How did you all get on with the injections?
We're going swimming soon, does anyone else go swimming? What's it like? What do I need to know?

geogteach · 12/04/2005 10:22

Should be at first swim class now but its been cancelled as the pool is too cold. As for tips I have 2 older ones so I recomend a reusable swim nappy works out cheaper than disposables and a towelling dressing gown is good to keep them warm when you get out.
Food is going down a treat here (such a relief after having 2 babies who loathed solids), had his first yoghurt this morning. So far he has just had fruit and veg but it is only the second week but am finding I can introduce new stuff much faster with an older baby. This morning tried feeding him in his bouncey chair as his sister was in the high chair, kept trying to bounce himself nearer the spoon, its very difficult to feed a moving target!

geog - about the moving target (baba being in the bouncer as that where i feed mine ATM)

Rickman - when DD doesnt open her mouth, i do aeroplanes noises and she have her mouth wide open and once the spoon is in her mouth, i make the shooting noise and she always laughs at it but its not fun when she sneezed in it as its all over me then

Maisie - mine had the injection months ago, DD cried on the first one, but on the 2nd and 3rd she just whimpered and then start gabbing to a picture on the wall behind me - strange child!! .. i need to go get mine weighed as i will deffo do it today, i think she poss a 22lb one !!! there is a piccy of baba on my members profile (that was in jan) and also im keen on taking her out swimming (when i get round to it!)

Bellie · 12/04/2005 14:18

Went to first swimming lesson today - dd loved it but was very shocked when the teacher made her go under the water - still she didn't cry so hoping the shock factor will disappear with time......
Weaning is going OK until today - dd definately decided that she didn't like cauliflower and would not open her mouth! However am finding that since solids she has not been sleeping as long over night - waking about an hour earlier - has anyone else had this?
Biglips - have you managed to get baba weighed - dying to know how much !

geogteach · 12/04/2005 15:10

Rickman, I would leave it longer, DD didn't eat until 10 months and is perfectly well on it now, there is enough to stress about without trying to make them eat. HV just been round to check up on me and said that I could give bread so may be give it a go, DD who was a weaning nightmare much prefered finger food. Still haven't had him weighed might have to get on the bathroom scales.

bellie - no i didnt get baba weighed - deffo on thrus (i was in a foul mood with mum but now calmed down as i went to Matalan on my own with baba and bought myself a short skirt to show off my legs this summer ).....

Baba is now grabbing everything she sees and shove it in her gob to 'feel' it... yesterday i told mum to look after baba whilst i was making tea and mum was happily reading her magazine and looked up to see if baba is ok, but she was sucking on summat so mum went over and realised that baba pulled a bit of cactus (non spikey one) and was sucking on it -aarrrgggghhhhhh!!, so now everything is out of reach as she had ripped my mag, letters, blah, blah, blah..

now finger foods - i gave baba a abit of toast in her hand and she loves it so she is doing quite well

oh and bellie again... baba is waking up 3 or 4 nights out of 7 for the past 4 weeks (since i started weaning her) so i started to give her 8oz of milk in each bottles (plus 3 meals - 5 teaspoons per meal) and she was sleeping thru but at the mo - she is recovering from he cold - better go and check on baba as she gone all quiet in the other room - hhhhmmmm !!!!

biglips · 12/04/2005 19:06

shes ok as she was sucking on my DP's work coat that she had picked up from the floor (she is in her walker)

geogteach · 12/04/2005 19:14

Well got on the scales he is just under 20lbs and 25 weeks.
Bellie Ds has had cauliflower today, mixed with leek, potato, carrot, peas and strawberry yoghurt, seemed to need pudding mixed in to help it go down! Used to cook cauli in milk and add grated cheese and then puree for the others, might try and see if that goes down better.

biglips · 12/04/2005 22:27

im on the powder stuff at the mo (cow & gate) and i did tried Potato and brocolli but i didnt puree the brocolli enough and baba looks like she was being sick so i will try again tmrw... tonight i gave her 8 teaspoons of "Cheese and tomato pasta" as ive ran out of desserts, so she was stocked up

Tonight put baba down on her play mobile amnd she turned over and was trying to stay up on her knees as she was on all 4's.,, i thought "uh oh, she'll be walking soon"

Maisiemog · 12/04/2005 23:41

I took pog to the HV to get his final jab and he was all "oh this is nice, what nice people, why am I here?" and then "Waaaaaah!" Poor old boy! He cried a lot last night, but also valiantly attempted to blow bubbles in between. Aaah! He had a long (for him) sleep of 6 hours and then fed and slept again and today he's brand new. So that's a relief.
So we're going swimming soon, I just need to find a class and get him his aquanappy. We're in cloth anyway, so we've not used many disps.
So they put the baby under water do they???? Why? How long do they get held under?
Do you need armbands or do the babies just float - he seems to float in the bath and when I hold him up his legs start paddling (very funny like dog).
Are baby pools warmed-up normally, because he's only been used to the bath - just right for babies. Mind you, he doesn't seem to have any nerve endings, so he probably wouldn't mind - I might though.

Bellie · 13/04/2005 10:18

I am sure the going under water is to ensure that they e not done are not frightened by it - but I certainly was!
The teacher puts them under and then pushes them to you so they are only under for a matter of seconds.
Geogteach I am trying cauliflower with sweer potato today to see if makes a difference. I have not done pudding yet so can't mix it in too!

Bellie · 13/04/2005 10:19

Not sure where my! head is today - should read - so they are not frightened by it

beansprout · 13/04/2005 15:57

Welcome to S2B and M/Mog

Haven't tried swimming yet, still on that very long "to-do" list. Not even sure where the nearest pool is tbh. May have to suss that one out.
No grub for young Bean yet, but then again, he is one of the nippers of the thread at 24 weeks and counting. At the moment though, he sleeps if I am not in the room. I'm now in the spare (soon to be Bean's) room which is an arrangement that is very alright with me.

Apart from that, he is flipping GORGEOUS. No teeth in the offing but boy, can that lad dribble.

geogteach · 13/04/2005 18:39

Maisie we're in cloth too, well 2 in fact DD is not quite 2. Baby pools are kept warm, that is why our lesson was cancelled. As for under the water it depends on what class you do, at aquatots it is part of the course I think, at my local leisure centre class it is optional. Previously I was of the get them used to it school of thought, but with so many ear probs for DS1, I have read advice which suggests it is not a good idea at this age.

geogteach · 13/04/2005 18:49

Forgot armbands are also dependent on classes, don't think aquatots approve. I've not used them at this age but as they get more independent esp when walking I have got them.
