Turtle - hope you have a better day today.

SHH - your HV sounds barmy! I mean really quite mad. Could you request a different one. I think I'd complain now, she sounds a bit stalkerish and is giving crazy advice.

littleducks · 06/08/2008 12:45

turtle- i think you do need the gps professional opininon but i would say that dd lost weight when teething, her face wouls stop being chubby! i didnt bottle feed so could give info on ozs.

turtle23 · 06/08/2008 16:50

Paracetemol then ibuprofen 2 hrs later, cold chewy things and teething powder has given us 10 oz so far...progress. poor little thing is in agony.

Ewe · 06/08/2008 17:52

Have you tried Medised and a dream feed turtle? I did this with DD on holiday one night as she was so hot she wasn't eating much.

turtle23 · 06/08/2008 20:59

Thanks, Ewe, have tried. His eye teeth are swollen up soooo much. They're not supposed to come through for another 6 months, but my DS doesn't play by the rules. Luckily, today they dropped below the gum line. Keeping him on full whack of painkillers he is happy 80% of the time. Thank god my baby is generally very happy and he has tried to smile through all the bad. The medicine seems to last 2.5 hours. Almost on the dot of it, he'll be smiling then suddenly scream and look very sad and shove whatever is nearest into his mouth, shaking. Soon, please be over soon.....

littleducks · 06/08/2008 21:01

It must be horrible but at least you can clearly see the cause now, and teeth do (eventually) always right themselves

fitnfortyone · 06/08/2008 23:23

Turtle, hope they come through soon, I was shocked to see my LO this evening when we went to collect him from his gran. He looked like a hamster with sunburn on one side of his face he was so swollen and flushed. Very swollen gums but they seem like they'll never break through, the last stretch must be hell for them

teething is so weird isn't it .thought gg was going to pop a full set a couple of weeks ago by state of him, now nothing. has just had his last set of jabs. bcg in septmeber next. dh came with me to clinic today, which was huge help. have had to ask the hv's for help, and referral to home start for practical support over the summer.

my joints have been getting worse and worse, gp got my results from blood tests and i am clearly showing all the results for rheumatoid arthritis Have a hospital consultation in September (6 weeks to go) and if started on meds then can take up to 6 months for them to work. so things are tough, but i hope this week the worst emotionally and things get a bit better soon. tis tough managing pain which is both chornic and obviously getting worse every week

fitnfortyone · 07/08/2008 14:56

MB, ouch, must be really tricky to cope with - is RA something that never goes away? Never quite know the diff between that and basic arthritis other than they both hurt a lot.

Took your earlier advice about getting some ibuprofen or similar for LO, but chemist flat out refused to consider giving anything other than calpol or ashton&parsons. Said I was using both and got told there was no alternative or anything stronger!

Went to the international swimming pool in cardiff today for a change. I'd forgotten how noisy public pools can be, Eddie could hardly hear me over the din. Won't go back there again until he's old enough to appreciate all the fun bits like the flumes etc.

nurofen for kiddies? strange pharmacist. yes ra is for life, all a bit scary the side efects of it and the chemo for it and so am ignoring the scarier bits(lalalalalalal fingers in ears) until my sept consultation and focusing only on the fact tha they say these disease modifying drugs really help

HolidaysQueen · 07/08/2008 17:27

MB - so sorry about your diagnosis that really sucks. I'm really glad that you and DH are getting extra support.

If you want some practical information at some point (i know by now that you are that sort of gal!) I work for a pharma company that is developing RA drugs, so i should have easy access to a whole bunch of info on the disease, treatments, drug trials etc. Well i will do if i remember the login details for my laptop... Do let me know.

FWIW, the disease modifying drugs are amazing and have revolutionised treatment of RA - it's perhaps the area of medicine which has advanced the most in recent years. You just need to work with your specialist to find the one that works best for you.

merryberry · 09/08/2008 09:58

thanks HQ, i may well be back to you after this sept consultation. oh well, at least i can ask for help now with a good reason from friends and family and the hv team...and it is such a relief to know i'm not imagining it! gone quiet here, everyone still out pretending it's summer ? the weather is not making things easy for any of the mums around here!

fitnfortyone · 10/08/2008 12:00

Got some baby ibuprofen stuff, naturally it says don't give for more than 2 days in a row.
Think the Calpol's about the same isn't it?
After an hour of solid screaming (at least) I wonder how many mums really care about how many days in a row it's been, other than to wonder how many days in a row are left before the bloody teeth come through?

Can see a white bit on the top tooth and feel a lump there, same as his 2 back teeth which he was born with, but the bottom ones are refusing to come through yet

In other news, have now built an ark in the garden and planning to sail out of here on it in a day or so when the water level reaches the roof.

hello all, have finally got internet access again- 2 weeks after moving house. If DH had had had to stay at home we'd have got internet again a lot quicker i think. Move was very chaotic- mainly due to the movers not providing enough men - as one of them said ruefully at 5.30- the stuff just keeps on coming. I don't think we've got that much stuff. Not really...
I appear to have moved onto Wisteria Lane which is giving me the heebie jeebies tho' DH loves it. (probably replacing me with Eva Longoria, mind).
Had a week of DD waking for 3 !!(count 'em) night feeds which was no fun as she's only just 4.5 months. Now she has this little white dot on the top gum at the side- tho' I can't feel a tooth so I wonder if she was teething. Last 2 nights she's been back to 1 feed so we are stepping gingerly away from total meltdown.

CricketsMum · 11/08/2008 09:14

wearehipsandmakers - hope it is a teething thing as my dd is doing the same thing... she now refuses to eat any solids after really getting into them last week and i was up every 3 hours to feed her through the night (have been for 2 nights running now). Irritatingly she wasn't eating much - wanted comfort?? fingres crossed it passes soon - meltdown is very very close...

littleducks · 12/08/2008 08:13

it is so hard being at home atm

this stage does seem to be tricky with babies, they get all fussy but cant crawl or cruise to amuse themselves! I am going to try and start remembering to sign more with ds, i did use to with dd but when she started talking more it faded away, but when we visited my mum she noticed that dd is signing again, mostly to ds so she reckons they will be having secret conversations before i know it!

potty training pretty much finished i suppose, she is fine when she wants to be but does have the odd accident because using the toilet would be more boring than wheat she is doing [sigh]

turtle23 · 12/08/2008 09:46

btw figleaves clearance...they have a hotmilk bra in the sale...

HolidaysQueen · 12/08/2008 10:09

littleducks - am smiling at the thought of your DD and DS having secret conversations

turtle - how are things with the feeding?

DS was 19 weeks yesterday and the lightbulb has suddenly switched on - he has realised that food is really exciting. Lunges for my cereal, sandwiches, snacks etc. and is particularly obsessed with cups of tea!!! He is definitely much hungrier as well - had 6 day time feeds yesterday rather than usual 4. We have to wait for a while to wean until the reflux is under control although tbh i'm not using gaviscon any more because he was so painfully constipated it was far worse than the reflux, and nothing like massage, extra water etc helped. Keeping him upright and quiet after feeds seems to be stopping the sick mostly so we'll just stick with that for now.

DH's birthday today so we're meeting him for lunch - braving the tube with a buggy on my own for only the second time!

anyone else loving the olympics? i love sport and told dh i didn't care when we had a baby so long as i was on mat leave during the olympics DS is particularly enjoying the swimming and the canoeing - clearly a water baby!

turtle23 · 12/08/2008 13:07

well....um...have had rotten time, got him onto bottles then got cold feet and back on the BF totally. And will be until at least 6 months.

fitnfortyone · 12/08/2008 14:14

Teething will end sometime in this lifetime...

Ooh, that was supposed to be italics, hmmph.

Turtle, most important thing is that you're happy with your decision, there was no point switching to formula if it was giving you a breakdown!

LO is developing a taste for calpol. Unfortunate then, that it goes straight to his nappies. He's got little blisters on his lips and red swollen fingers where he's been knawing on his hands so hard

Weaning seems to be going ok now, he's actively opening his mouth for the spoon and enjoyed his banana custard gloop this morning.

monthlymayhem · 12/08/2008 21:34

Hello

Well LO survived our week in Portugal, and was a wee star on both plane journeys - even had lots of people commenting on what a cute and quiet little baby he is - HAH! - if only they knew. It was lovely to get away and my Mum and dad were fantastic at taking him off our hands and helping out.

After LO being used to wearing just a nappy all day, it seems a shame he's now back to this weather and has to wear clothes, with a cagoul on top

Generally he has been much better the last couple of weeks - even going down to sleep easily thank goodness. However, he is still up two or three times a night for feeds (and has been since 12 weeks!).

I've decided to start winding down BF gently, with the plan to wean off one feed a week. I've started with a formula feed for his late morning feed. It does seem a real faff having to make up the bottles though, and unfortunately LO is VERY fussy about the temperature he'll drink. Once I've found the magic temperature, he'll usually drink for 2 or 3 ounces, and then decide it's gone cold again, so I need to heat it up a bit more. I know you're not supposed to re-heat formula, but I'm assuming if it just a few minutes after initially heating then it should be ok?

I haven't started weaning properly yet, but LO is only 21 weeks, and a small baby so I'm being a bit cautious. I have used a little easy feeder net bag thingy, to give him a taste of banana and pear, and he seemed to like it. I'm planning to keep giving him little tastes and then start weaning properly in 3 or 4 weeks time.

Hope everyone is well and LO's aren't suffering too much from teething.

e14mum · 13/08/2008 09:34

DD managed to grab a whole rasher of bacon off DH's plate the other day! We had to pry it out of her greasy little fingers... don't think I'll take that as a sign of wanting food though

She is 21 weeks too and has tasted some pear and nectarine (just to see what she'd do) and really liked it, but she's happy on her milk right now and I'm happy waiting.

littleducks · 13/08/2008 10:12

my friends baby had his first taste of solid food the other day at 17 weeks....

he swallowed a fly!!!!!!!!!!!

i said she should make a note of that in the baby book!

fitnfortyone · 13/08/2008 11:06

for those on formula, how much is your LO taking now? I can't keep up with him, he's on 40oz a day now so obviously had a growth spurt last week. Can't get it all in one bottle per feed now which is a bit annoying!

Looking forward to the rest of today and tomorrow as he's at his grans so I get a chance to tidy up before visitors arrive for the weekend. Mind you, won't get doing that while I'm sitting here typing and watching the Olympics!
