turtle, how about the mam ultivent teats?
These were/are what my bottle refusink babies will accept. the pic linked shows how it is flatter than the round types of teat, the same basic shape your nipple goes into once sucked. they come in 2 sizes and 3 flow rates and you'll need to experiment your way up through the combos. i don't use them with ulitvent bottles which are a bit faffy, i use(d) mine with avent bottles perfectly well.

turtle23 · 07/06/2008 14:18

Thanks, MB, will have a go. He has another appt next week and have been told that will probably be it. If ever you need a hand on a Tuesday afternoon would be happy to help if I can.

turtle23 · 07/06/2008 20:35

Well, I went over the road to Lloyd's and they had those exact teats in the "bargain bin" for £1 for 2. He took 2 oz then had a superfreakout, but the fact that he took 2 is amazing!!

turtle23 · 08/06/2008 10:56

And it just gets better..he took 3 oz EBM (FROM ME) this morning!

fitnfortyone · 08/06/2008 12:41

yay turtle!

Been fairly pleasant here too - we've had 3 consecutive nights where LO has slept through for 12 hours. Gasp!
Still get a screaming hissy fit first thing after his wake up feed, but I can cope with that.

Anybody here got smelly baby head, and have you found a cure? Aaron has cradle cap, and his head smells really quite musty. We've been putting some cradle cap cream on from Boots, and washing his hair everynight (only using shampoo on alternate nights), but it doesn't seem to be shifting. I can cope with the cradle cap but not the smell. I feel a little embarassed to be posting on here about what could well be another hygiene issue although we have solved the ear crust now.

We seem to have had a tough week here, seem to have been on a monster growth spurt, days and days being unsettled, no decent naps and very regular feeding. Last 2 days have been better, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Nights aren't great either (after having almost 3 months of 5 hours between feeds at night) it has gone to every 2-3 hours. Mr P has man flu too, hopefully once that has passed he'll be more use at night too.

turtle - that's great news, I hope he carries on well with the bottles.

skidoodle · 08/06/2008 17:59

HQ LOL @ "but is your baby tall?"

That's how I am too. DD is another tall thin baby. I especially like that you say "tall" too. Most people say "long", and I think to myself "my baby is not a snake"

One day DH said DD was skinny. I was not amused. I told him that calling a woman's baby skinny was like calling her arse fat. But then he's done that too, so I shouldn't be surprised.

BTW thanks for your swimming tips a while back. You saved me about 100 quid as I decided to look around for a pool with warmer baby pool and found one nearer me that costs way less than the one I was going to join for the summer.

turtle that's ace about the new teats working. It must be such a relief.

I don't know if this is any help with the breastfeeding feelings, but when I was very, very fed up with how the breasfeeding was going I set myself a date quite a while in the future but close enough to seem real and I decided that if it wasn't going well by then (10 weeks for me, can't remember how far in the future it was when I was at my lowest ebb though) I was going to have given up. It made me feel better as I had made a decision and saw a light at the end of the tunnel iyswim - one way or another I was going to have the feeding working in a normal fashion by a certain time, whatever it took to achieve that. If he continues to take bottles from you, you have a lot more options and that might take the pressure off a bit.

OK gotta go, upset baby.

BlueDragonfly · 08/06/2008 20:57

Glad you had success with the teat turtle. sorry i haven't been following.

this thread always slips from my mind (and sometimes my threads i am on)

DS3 won't take a bottle either but i don't think he would entertain that teat. it won't fit our bottles (tommee tippee closer to nature) but he won't have a dummy that is that shape anywhere near his mouth

merryberry · 08/06/2008 21:13

mrsphas3 i remember marchnowfebmum talking about ponging cradle cap on the last thread. i don't remember the outcome, but i think it's worth doing a search back through there...she's in canada for 2/52 and may not see your message.

merryberry · 08/06/2008 21:15

...was walking away and remembered it did involve a trial of epaderm...i don't recall if it helped tho

modsaluk · 08/06/2008 21:35

Hi everyone noe been on for ages again, turtle glad your ds is taking it now hope this carries on for you.

Harry and Millie seem to have a last bottle between 8 - 9 and sleep until 3 - 4 ish this is really good for us compared to my eldest DS who did not sleep until he was 9 months old.

No signs of teething as yet but sure it will come soon.

fitnfortyone · 08/06/2008 22:43

re the cradle cap thing, olive oil rubbed in then washed off was one suggestion (my HV suggested too, but then he'd smell like a chippy)...and someone said they'd used sudocrem behind the ears and it had worked a treat but can't remember who.

Spoke too soon re quiet days...screaming blue murder again for a couple of hours at bedtime, may have been thirst rather than hunger but he's knocked back 5oz more than normal today as well as having some water. Been asleep since 8 though so we were able to eat in peace. Isn't it great when you just get 'em off to sleep and your neighbours all decide it's time to mow the lawn, heave scaffolding poles about and set off their car alarms every 20 seconds?

or insulate their homes (drills, pumps, men yelling)

wearehipsandmakers · 09/06/2008 09:11

had the first proper smile and even a chortle yesterday- worrying late but we are a curmudgeonly family and a refreshingly straightforward night - DD slept from 8-1.30 and from then till 7 !! the first time she's done that. the previous 2 nights she was waking again at 9,12,4 and 6 which was not making us at all happy. hopefully it was just a growth spurt and she'll settle back down.
She has cradle cap too I think- kind of yellow-y dry skin. I've been olive-oiling her every nappy change for a week or so without it making a huge difference apart from, as you say, making me hungry for chips every time I go near her. I have a HV appointment on Thursday so I'll ask about it then. She's going to be 4 weeks late for her first jabs due to colds and having to wait for next appt. Does anyone know if that is going to cause a problem?

wearehipsandmakers · 09/06/2008 09:13

PS turtle I hope all is going well- the MAM bottles were the only ones I could get DD to take when we moved from nipple to nozzle- all the others she just let the milk pour out of her mouth.

turtle23 · 09/06/2008 10:36

Turtle is singing her way through the day....lalalala...my beautiful boy slept from 9-4, awake 5 mins then til 630...GLEEEEEEEEEEE!

LookingForwardToSummer · 09/06/2008 11:10

Yay turtle!!!!

Hope everyone had a nice sunny day yesterday!
We had to have a dash to get a cot yesterday as dd has made it her mission to sit up - lying in my arms, looked determined, grabbed my shirt snd hauled herself up and then grinned. She's now working on balance! She's loving her door swing too.

at idea of teething. As a first timer i assumed that didn't happen for months. What is the average age of first tooth and what happens with bf?

imjin100 · 09/06/2008 11:52

on cradle cap - we've had a bad dose of it. I tried almond oil every night before bed and then a soft combing session in the morning. Also boots has some cream which is good for softening it. After persisting with both oil, detinox and cream, and a bit of combing the lose stuff off we finally have a clear head...just incase anyone needs something new to try! I couldn't face olive oil - smelt too food like - almond oil is better for me!

Also on the mam teats - I'll second that. the only ones i could get to work, with dr brown bottles....I'm now considering opening a shop just selling teats as I have enough to fund the food bill - have bought every sort -arghghgh

happy days to all - long may this sunshine continue.

fitnfortyone · 09/06/2008 13:31

maybe we're supposed to try vinegar for cradle cap and the olive oil/chippy smell is just a prompt?

fitnfortyone · 09/06/2008 13:33

went to view a nursery this morning, bloomin' heck it's expensive...but a good one. They only have mondays and fridays available, so will plonk him in on Mondays starting end sept just before i go back to work. Ruins DH's idea of taking monday as his day off when he goes part time, he'll have to make do with midweek as I'll be having every other friday off when i go back!

OP posts:
merryberry · 09/06/2008 14:03

what hoyurs will you work when you go back fn41?

fitnfortyone · 09/06/2008 14:13

oh, still full time but t&cs changed last month so we now work 3 hours less and as a 9 day fortnight so they can save costs by closing down the site for an extra day. Going to be hell to start with (and apparently the weeks working 5 days are really hard for everyone!).
DH is going down to 4 days a week as I get a 20% bonus for a year when i go back, far too good an offer to turn down. Plus I get about 3x his salary anyway so he's looking forward to an easy life (hah!) looking after LO for a bit

OP posts:
merryberry · 09/06/2008 15:21

same company then dh and you? a golden handcuff sounds very nice from where i'm sitting. i'm signed up to do WAHM from November onwards. It's really really hard to work from home with kids around. I much prefered when i went out to work in an office in terms of getting on with the job.

fitnfortyone · 09/06/2008 16:02

Not same company, DH is a simple servant hence the crap pay. Used to think i'd like to work from home, but having seen how much attention Lo is likely to demand, then it could be pretty near impossible for me...I'm very easily distracted. Prefer to just win the lottery so I don't have to worry about the income, but can still go out and about where and when i want to. Shame cosmic ordering doesn't really work for lottery winnings

skidoodle · 09/06/2008 17:40

fnfo & merryberry - yes I had all these ideas about working from home with a baby yeah right I don't really know what I was thinking of. It's not like I'd never met a baby before.

I'm going back to work in 4 weeks. Will I be the first? Next week I'm going to bring her for some practise times with her childminder. I'm sort of looking forward to going back. I'm not sure whether to feel guilty about that, so I'm going with not.

LookingForward - your LO is starting to sit up? I too was not expecting teething yet, but I've not been expecting sitting up either. DD has shown more signs of walking than she has of sitting up, i.e. none. Well she does have very strong legs.

No answers forthcoming on what tummy time is so DH and I just put DD down on her playmat on her tummy. She sort made like she was crawling but didn't get very far. Not as far as she gets every night when she creeps to the other end of her cot anyway.

Oh BTW, from a previous lurk I saw HQ and fnfo talking about the baby einstein magic star so I insisted we get one and DD has had many blissed out sessions on baby crack.
