OK, ds is in bed (utterly overtired following a mad active day, afternoon at nursery and a playdate which included a dinner he didn't really eat even tho his playmates both ate beautifully...I have had words....) - and dh is now home and settling Tamara, so I can finally breathe...!!

Nicky, Gingeme and JKS - really lovely to see the 3 of you today and all your fab los...all the babies were on such good behaviour (apart from T, and I think that was my fault!) - and I'm particularly in love with angelic little Charlie

Susie - if you find any sugar free rusks please let me know. I found Heinz sugar free ones in the supermarket in Singapore, of all places, and stocked up in advance last year but the same brand in the UK has sugar in....weird, huh?

Simpson - weaning going well, thanks...I think...she's enjoying it but its just a 'for fun' thing at the moment....having said that, we're getting increased excitement when the bib and spoon appear at mealtimes, and a reasonable amount of sweet potato puree must have gone down at lunchtime because the pot was empty but the bib, Tamara and me were all pretty clean! So far she hasn't quite grasped opening her mouth for the spoon, preferring so slurp/suck it off in a particularly unladylike manner! Lido sounds amazing...shame its a bit too far for us to come for an afternoon as I think ds would love it!

OK, off for a large G&T, hope you all have good nights!

perapera · 24/06/2008 20:02

hi everyone

Had a great night's sleep last night thanks (I think) to our black out blinds (or huge blanket hung over the window in our case). DD only woke up once for a feed, went straight back to sleep afterwards, and then slept till 7 am. Woo-hoo! Let's see if she can do it again tonight...

I'm very impressed with you people going on the tube with buggies - I can do stairs, and obviously lifts, but escalators terrify me. I can just about manage the tiny ones at Brent Cross, but the huge deep ones on the tube are just beyond me. Which of course makes travelling around very difficult, especially if you don't drive like me.

mixedmama - I feel the same about the weaning. I want to do BLW too, but the choking thing does scare me. It all seems logical, and I keep saying I can't be bothered to make purees, but DD seems to cough and choke enough on just milk. Still want to give it a go, but I can imagine changing my mind nearer the time.

MrsBaker - Baby Led Weaning is when you just let the baby feed itself on finger food - you basically skip the puree stage. One of the reasons for it is so that they don't reject lumpy food later on. Also they're more in control of what they're eating. There's a website about it which explains better than I can! Is anybody here doing it/planning to do it?

simpson · 24/06/2008 20:03

Lucky salem - Can't believe that they are making Saw5 & 6!! Think it was my brother who told me that no. 4 was the last one. Will tell him he is wrong!!

DH gone out to our local Focus store as weeds coming through on our lovely newly turfed lawn. Think it is now a personal war against weeds for him, he is obsessed!!

Hopefully DS's playgroup photos will be there tomorrow to pick up can't wait to see them.

Filly - my DH looked after both Dcs this evening. Bath, bed etc. Can count on one hand how many times he has put DD down as normally I do her he does DS if he is here. Nice relaxing evening for me also. Lets hope DH doesn't go on about weeds all night!!

perapera · 24/06/2008 20:08

LuckySalem - I haven't invested the voucher yet, keep remembering it and reminding myself to look into it and then forgetting instantly. I read that one third of them are never invested, which is a bit silly really as it's a free £250. How long do we get to invest them?

I have just totally jinxed myself saying that DD slept really well last night - I put her down at 7 and I've been in and out of her room every five minutes since then because of tragedies.

simpson · 24/06/2008 20:10

Perapera X post.

I am planning to do BLW too.DD managed a lick of leek last week! Waiting till 26 weeks though as DD struggled with formula for so long not sure if tummy ready till then. Just don't think she is ready. It is pure fluke if she gets anything in her mouth yet, she tends to bring her mouth down to toy, food, rattle instead! I didn't do BLW with DS so I am a novice. I guess I will be worrying about the choking etc nearer the time!!

Glad blackout blanket/blind worked.

I don't drive either so only go public transport if DH around either to come with me or stay behind & have a DC.

AngeChica · 24/06/2008 20:29

Hi all

My thoughts exactly, I'd like to see them try and hold off a 20lb baby from weaning. His food is going down fine. The easy digest formula is definitely helping with the milk feeds tho' he did present me with the most revolting nappy I've seen so far at 4am last night . It has something in it to break down the lactose but they do warn you that it affects their poos. It does lead me to suspect a slight lactose intolerance. I guess for no baby no.2 I would try and BF longer. But re-lactating for DS now would be so difficult now I think my milk has dried up.

We put Alek's CTF in the Childrens Mutual, if you set up a direct debit to save at least 10 pounds a month you get £30 Mothercare voucher.

I lived in Spain in my young and carefree days Susie.... some wild times there !

simpson · 24/06/2008 20:33

Angechica - If my LO weighed 20lbs I would be weaning now too! My DD only weighs 13lbs so want her to put some more weight on first. But if she gets to the stage where she wakes up in the night alot for feeds might change my mind!!

mixedmama · 24/06/2008 21:04

Filly what about the Hampstead Heath Lido - altho I suspect we dont have a beach

The link to baby led weaning is babyledweaning.blogware.com/ altho i am sure they want you to use a different link but cant remember what it is to remain on the google list. one of the creators of the blog is a mumsnetter.

so jealous of the meet up. am going toconspire to do the next one.

AngeChica · 24/06/2008 21:07

PS One of the mums at our group is a photographer and did DS's pictures the other week. Have uploaded some on profile. I love them!

barristermum · 24/06/2008 21:30

Oh Ange - love the pictures so much, how gorgeous.
Am so jealous at the meet up - would have loved to meet Nicky and catch up with filly, jks and ging.
Cerys is loving sweet potato at the mo, mixed with broccoli and whilst baby rice is nothing to write home about, mix it with mango and she is like a little bird with her beak open wanting more!
My financial adviser is looking at the child trust thing as well as life insurance and how much school fees might require if that's the route we go down. Seems to be a lot of outgoings when my income is by no means what it was. Brrrr.

MrsBakerGirl · 24/06/2008 21:40

Hi Angechica

What gorgeous photos - he is lovely.

You ahve inspired me - must get some professional photos done of DTs.

simpson · 24/06/2008 22:21

Lovely pics Angechica. You must have been thrilled when you first saw them. A model in the making I think!

Am going to photographers on 28th for DD. Hope I can get some good pics too.

Naetha · 24/06/2008 22:56

Hello all

Wish I lived in London sometimes so I could go to the meet-ups! Having said that, there's no way I could afford our gorgeous 3 bed semi darn sarf, so I'm quite happy here with my views of Ilkley Moor .

Weaning wise, Ben has been on solids for the best part of 6 weeks now, and I've just started him with finger foods. It took him 20 minutes, but the other day he ate almost a whole tenderstem broccoli piece, and absolutely loved it! He's also eaten a few rice cakes, and I'm going to try him with bits of banana and carrot soon. The puree he has (homemade, usually whatever is on special offer / reduced to clear in Tesco that week) has been getting increasingly lumpy over the last few weeks and he's been coping fine. He does gag sometimes, but I just try not to make a big deal of it, and he gets over it fine. Not once has he actually choked, although a couple of times now I've had to remove some large bits of broccoli from his mouth because I knew there was no way he could swallow them! I made a vile concoction today of avocado, mushroom and broccoli (it seemed like a good idea at the time until I smelled it!) and it looks (and smells) absolutely vile, but come dinnertime he wolfed it down like mad! He's never turned his nose up at any food, and I've given him some pretty bad ones! Banana is still the staple, but it's being mixed with lots of lovely summer berries, and then we stick to carrot, parsnip and avocado based purees for the savoury side of things. I gave him a tiny bit of my friend's gluten free chocolate brownie the other day, and the look on his face was priceless! If that experience was anything to go by, he's going to be a right chocolate fiend as he gets older!

For those of you on 2-3 solid meals a day, how much milk do your LOs have? Ben has 4-5 milk feeds a day at roughly 6 hours apart - 7-8am, midday, then sometimes a couple of ounces at 4pm, then 7pm and 2-3am. He usually downs 8oz with ease. I would be tempted to wean him off his night time feed, but he always has at least 6oz, and always still drinks his breakfast milk, so he obviously needs it still.

He's still not crawling yet (I always seem to say he's about to!) but he is very very mobile - he can shuffle backwards at great speed and spin like a pro!

Finally sold my old motorbike today - it's good to have the cash, but I feel a little sad as it did us very well, getting both me and DH to our tests. Still the money will go to pay for the bathroom that is very nearly finished and looks awesome! I'll have to post some pics when it's finished

Right, off to bed before I fall asleep - hugs to all having trouble with LOs - remember "this too shall pass!".

justkeepswimming · 25/06/2008 07:00

morning , not...

ds2 up at 9, but sitter got him back to sleep (how the hell does he do it when i can't????? i mean fgs, he's 15, a boy..he said he just holds H and says go back to sleep )
then up at 2 for a feed,
5 me awake
5.30 ds2 awake
6 ds1 awake.

maybe i'm the one who needs blackout blinds....

well ds1 off to nursery later, i have so many jobs after taking all of yesterday off

we have sort of start blw here (ds2 not 6mo until 21st july) - he sits in his highchair (will load a pic onto profile in a mo) and i give im a piece of pepper, carrot, cucumber, rice cake, etc and let him have a go. he loves it but of course isn't actually EATING anything yet. but then by 6mo he prob will be and we can relax on rules re wheat/dairy etc.
just really looking forward to him dropping any of his feeds think it must be a growth spurt atm as i'm not getting a chance to 'fill up' and he's up for milk at any time...

anyway, beebies is entertaining both of them while i drink my tea/wake up

AngeChica · 25/06/2008 08:43

Mornin'.

Naetha DS has 5 x 6oz feeds a day now at 8 - 11 - 2 - 5 - 7.45. Then dream feed at 11 - have you thought abut trying that?

When I was BF he used to go through to about 2-3am. However now I give him this dream feed at 11: about 4 or 5 oz. I just stick the bottle in his mouth and he usually stays asleep but takes the feed. He now goes through til 6-7am. If he wakes early I bring him in to bed for another hour. He generally doesn't seem to get hungry til about 8am.

I miss going to bed earlier cos theres always the risk that he will still wake in the night to be resettled. Depends what you prefer an early night or the chance of not being woken in the small hours.

Food wise so far we have porridge or similar mid- morning and a bit of puree with baby rice in it about 4pm.

I'm going to wait til he's a bit older and on 3 meals a day before trying to go to 4 milk feeds. Mainly because he won't let you break for winding during a bottle, cries merry hell, so will have to wait til tummy (even) bigger.

Right ... busy day, meeting a potential childminder, then baby clinic and got to take DH car to garage for MOT.

MrsBakerGirl · 25/06/2008 08:56

Hi Simpson

Meeting up with a group from netmums on Friday - I have only met one of the mums b4 all others through e-mail. We will be in Debenhams Uxbridge at 1pm in Coffee Shop. Just thought incase you were around you might like to join us.

Not sure where everyone else on thread is from - but anyone welcome!

Hope you all have a good day!

LuckySalem · 25/06/2008 09:12

Hi all,

Well I think we've got this sleeping thing sorted again (kinda) last night she went to bed at 9:30, woke at 6 for bottle then went back to sleep till 8:45 so I can deal with that.

weaning wise - I gave DD a slice of bread last night to play with and her face was a picture Of corse most of it went on the floor and I had to re-hoover but still.... she enjoyed playing with it.
She's drinking 5 8oz bottles at the mo, one when she wakes sometime between 5 and 6am, then one when we get up at about 9am. Then I give her breakfast at about 10am (today is going to be a corner of toast) she'll have a bottle around 1pm, lunch at 3ish, bottle at 5 a little something to suck on after her nap and a last bottle just before bed. Always 8oz's and sometimes she still looks at me about wanting more.

Me and DP tidied the front room and kitchen yesterday cos it was getting disguisting - its sooo nice to have a clean, uncluttered, room. I'm hoping to sort out DD's room later and maybe even go swimming. - Which DP promised her on Monday we'd do but he was "too tired" [yawn] I'm the one whos not going to bed till 1am with him then getting up at 5am with her but he's the one thats "too tired" to do anything cos it's his holiday and he should be allowed to have a lie in! when's my holiday then?!?!?

Anyways..... DD can now blow raspberries like a buggar, sits up completely on her own, and walks up our belly's if you hold her under her arms. So funnny!!

Hope all is ok with everyone.
When are we meeting in BHAM?

mixedmama · 25/06/2008 09:29

Morning all,

Glad to see everyone is doing well.

Re weaning, so far we still have our 4 bottles 8-12-4-8, but TBH the last feed he is hardly taking and falls asleep so last night only gave 4 oz instead of 9 oz and didnt make any difference. He has his one solid feed at about 10 then nap for a couple of hours. ATM we just have baby porridge, but once i get my blender and steamer will be doing some purees, I am chickening out of the BLW altho i think it is a great concept.

Amani · 25/06/2008 10:13

Morning all

at another meet up - wish I wasn't too far away from yuo london ladies so I could join you.

DD2 is on 3 meals a day, but is unpredictable some days she will refuse to eat a thing and other days she will just gobble her purees all down. At the moment she has 4 - 5 bottles X 5 ounces, plus a little water.

lilyloo · 25/06/2008 10:39

ooh loving all this weaning talk now i have my ordered my highchair (2 week delivery) i will start. Although dd not 6 mths until 13th July!

Well last night when she woke up i managed to resettle her twice with her dummy/blanket so she only had 1 feed from dream feed to 7.30 which for us is a major breakthrough. Interestingly she also went from 1.30 -7.30so proves she can do it! (fingers crossed)

Well awful day here started off lovely. Have a friend coming for lunch with her 2 ds 18mths, 3mths so bet Martha will seem huge !

I have also decided to do Martha's christening at home and cross fingers for nice weather and do barbecue. So am now trying to get garden tidied up (no mean feat)

simpson · 25/06/2008 11:40

Hi morning all,

Mrs BakersGirl - thanks for invite but won't be able to make it. DS finishes playgroup at 12 home at 12.30 then takes forever for him to eat lunch!! Also don't relish taking both DCs on bus to Uxbridge by myself as DH back at work. Technically I live in cowley so have to get U3/U5 bus. If I only take one buggy DS can really play up. Will definately try to make another one though. Its a pity as I would quite like to go. Oh well. Going out on Fri eve though to see Sex and The City film so looking forward to that.

Had another good night with DD. She went to bed at 6.30 pm slept till 6.00am took 5 oz and slept till 8am!! Have just uped her bottles today to 5 scoops as she was regularly draining 4.

Forgot to ask Mrs BakersGirl - how did the aptamil go down?

mixedmama · 25/06/2008 12:07

Simpson - ahh the buggy problems.

I have a double (twin) which were given virtually new but so heavy and cumbersome. I use it when I drop the kids to MIL after toddler group as it is good walk.

I use my mclaren and buggy board otherwise, but am buying a new sling tomorrow that last suntil 18months with the idea being that i have the buggy board (altho DS1 prefers to walk) and will keep the sling in the basket so that if he gets tired I can swap them over.

Ange- good luck with the CM. I have met one at toddler group that I quite like altho have always been adament it will be nursery. Started a thread about pros and cons of each and it has actually been fairly positive.

simpson · 25/06/2008 12:14

Mixed mama - I have a double also that my parents bought us when DD was born which I love but obviously can't get on bus. We have a mothercare Citylite for DD and a buggy board to go on the back which DS loves but it KILLS my back having to push with your bum sticking out!! Also have a maclaren for when DH off and we take a single buggy each. The annoying thing is if we take 2 single buggys or I am out with the double he will walk everywhere as soon as I only take pushchair for DD he refuses to walk etc. Grrr.

mixedmama · 25/06/2008 12:17

Typical toddler isnt it. If i dont take the buggy board he asks for it when we are out.

simpson · 25/06/2008 12:23

Grrr - DD been awake since 8am. Not hungry have just fed her. Why won't she sleep?! She is wingeing & rubbing eyes big time but no sleep! Oh well shouldn't complain as she is so good at night.
