Clairey - What a nightmare, i thought my day was bad enough!!!
Im just about to start potty training ds1, im dreading it, dont have a clue how to start with him so keep putting off
Ethan also must know when i want 5 minutes peace, he can be fast asleep and the minute i get in the bath he decides he wants something

BT - Sorry you had a bad night last night

claireybee · 29/05/2008 16:38

Fifi I don't actually think dd is ready, but as she refuses to wear nappies at the moment I don't have much choice but to try (or get kicked and screamed at everytime I try to put nappy on!). If we are at home and she has a bare bum she goes on the potty everytime, if she is wearing pants she makes it or tells me in time 70% of the time so not too bad. When we are out it is so hit and miss though, she gets distracted and forgets to tell me until she has done it.

claireybee · 29/05/2008 16:40

Oh and to start we had the potty around and just used to catch the accidents in it when she had her nappy off, then when she stopped wanting to wear nappies we said ok but do it in the potty and just kept telling her everytime she had an accident. Chocolate buttons and lots of clapping if she used it seemed to make it click for her!

fifisworld · 29/05/2008 17:31

Clairey - Tbh, im not sure if ds1 is ready yet either, he'll happily wear nappies, but tends to take them off when they are dirty. He's got a potty and we put him on it when he's stripped for the bath but hasn't done anything in it yet.
He's only just turned 2 a few weeks ago and apart from taking his nappies off doesnt show any signs that je's ready, although he does know what poo and wee are....i just feel under pressure from other people, im sick of people saying he should be out of nappies...

claraquitetirednow · 29/05/2008 17:59

Fifi - no! Wait! Don't potty train until they are ready (unless you are forced to like Claireybee!). Honestly, he's very young still and it is SOOOO much easier once they are old enough - if you do it before they are ready you'll have loads of accidents. If you wait you will have fewer, I promise!! My dd1 sort of trained herself (when dd2 was about 8 weeks old so not great timing) and was dry at night at the same time. We have had a total of about 6 accidents, and not a single poo accident.....

Claireybee - ewueugh to the poo!!! You sound like you have a LOT more patience than me. Oh and your ds sounds like my dd2 at the moment, screaming every time I put her down, she was awake most of the night - MUST be teething????? (again!)

Am very proud of myself - made it to 5 months ex BF - and think I would continue but starting work week on Monday and fed up with expressing - she took some baby rice and some carrot puree today so time for some mixed feeding now - will try and continue bedtime and early morning BF feeds and see how we go...feeling happy, sad, proud all at once

macdoodle · 29/05/2008 18:38

oh she was 5 calendar months yesterday - 22 weeks tomorrow
and Clairy - bleeeeurgh to the poo - but funny how they will go to sleep if we have to leave them - my Tesco shop arrived just as I put Lily down and by the time it was all brough in and unpacked (20min or so) she had gone off - I would never have lasted that long usually !

BouncingTurtle · 29/05/2008 20:12

Macdoodle - well done on exbf to 5 months! Lots of people have continued on just feeding morning and evening on return to work - I'm hoping to do the same. you are going back so soon, it's come around so quick!
How's your dd1 getting on with her advanced schooling? Is she doing ok and settling in? You must be sooo proud of her

dundeemarmalade · 29/05/2008 20:37

evening all.
the thought that i have to prepare myself for another several years potentially being covered in poo on a daily basis is quite daunting.
dd pooed all over me, herself and the carpet on monday (in front of dh and my parents, oh how we laughed), having been quite bunged up for a few days. two weeks ago, hv suggested we start introducing solids two or three times a day, so we have and she has indeed stopped feeding every two/three hours round the clock. she just can't poo. she is still having 6 to 8 bf a day and is only on pureed veg/plum baby porridge, and i'm trying to get water into her with meals but still no movement, iykwim.
she has got teeth though. two very sharp little teeth are definitely above her gums and getting bigger every day. makes my nips ache just thinking about it!

macdoodle · 29/05/2008 20:46

Thanks BT - think it was Buzzy's DD1 with the advanced schooling (though mine is pretty bright too {proud mummy boasting emoticon})....
Am hoping will be able to ct with morn and eve BF trouble is my days at work are long ones (8am-7pm though only 2 days a week plus one shorter one) so may not even get the bedtime one in unless I do it as soon as I get in - anyway I have done my best and enjoyed it and she is lovely happy fat chubby baby....
Yes it did come quick she will be 5 and half months - doesn't seem very old to leave her (though DD1 was a month younger and I worked many more hours and she is fine)...it is only 2 and half days though so chin up smile on tears hidden (dreading it)... And if I am honest I love my job a lot (and am good at it if I don't say so)...could justle mum do with a few more months really but being self employed AND single mum AND having to pay my replacement ...just cannot afford to be off any longer

becklespeckle · 29/05/2008 20:53

Bouncing your night sounds awful, you are so lucky your DH helps you out some, mine never would!

Fifi, don't rush him! 2 is very young still for toilet training! I did DS2 at 2.5 before he was really ready and it was a nightmare, still had accidents a year later. I decided to wait longer with DS2 but he had other ideas! He was ready at 2.5 months and was really easy, dry at night too!

Clairey, yuk at all that poo! DD's teeth are not full size yet but are sharp enough to leave toothmarks on my finger when she chews it! Think my nips are toughening up again though as not so sore today!

Macdoodle, another here saying well done for getting to 5 months EBF! DD is 20 weeks and is still EBF but am going to start her on some solids this week as I think she is ready.

Talking of solids, I gave her a bit of fruit smoothie on a spoon earlier, she took it well and readily opened her mouth for the spoon (and for more). Then I realised it had strawberry and orange in it! They are not supposed to have those until 6 months so now I am worrying about it - she only had 3 little spoons (half full ish) so hopefully I haven't done any lasting damage. Will try nice sensible apple tomorrow.

BouncingTurtle · 29/05/2008 22:00

beckle - i think they advise avoiding strawberry and citrus because of the acid? So a titchy bit would probably not do any harm!

Mac - yes you are right, it was Buzzy but i do remember that your dd is lovely and bright!

Well so far so good, ds went down about 7.15, stirred about 20 mins ago but gave him his dodie back, and it appears his nappy hasn't leaked! Hurrah! Will check again later.
Bought it from Nappyzone and she gave me lots of advice on why it might have leaked - main problem is his vest been too tight, which causes moisture to wick out of the nappy. The Tesco vests seem to be quite short and I have trouble buttoning them up over bulky nappy even though they are 6-9 mth! When I compared it to an Asda and an M&S one, they both appear to be longer than the Tesco ones! His Tesco 3-6mth sleepsuits also appear to be shorter than the Asda and Mothercare ones I have - I have similar difficulty doing them up. I have him in some 6-9mth pyjamas and they are really roomy so think I will get him some more.
He's still mainly in 3-6 mth clothing and will be for a while - it's just the bulkiness of the night nappy which is making me have to go up a size. It is a fleece pocket nappy with a hemp insert and a prefold wrapped around a microterry insert.

BouncingTurtle · 29/05/2008 22:24

Forgot to mention, just bought a door bouncer, ds loves it! He is only just big enough for it, it is on the lowest setting, and he bounces a bit but mainly spins around grinning like a loon, bless him. The cat came over to have a look while he was in it and ds grabbed a big handful of his fur then tried to eat his tail. Luckily, I managed to rescue the cat, who fortunately is very tolerant of being grabbed by small child! I don't let the cat near ds unless I am with him, not because I'm worried about ds, I'm more worried about my cat as he really is totally soft!

loucee · 29/05/2008 23:41

Hello

Just back after some time time away with DH and the kids.

BT I got our door bouncer out today but I can't find the harness part to it! I'm so annoyed but really cannot find it anywhere so have no choice other than to buy a new one.

DS is being a funny wee thing with his feeds, I tried him on some baby rice using expressed milk but he wasn't ready so am leaving it for a couple more wks. He grabs my food though and cried today when DD was eating a banana and he was suckling his mouth then was sucking on his hand whilst watching her.

Hope everyone is well, sorry for such a short post, just read through everyone's posts and wanted to say hi really!

becklespeckle · 29/05/2008 23:43

Thanks for the reassurance Bouncing! Hopefully she will be okay [huge fingers crossed emoction]. DD has a door bouncer too and she seems to enjoy being in it, she hasn't got the hang of bouncing in it yet but she loves spinning round and being nosey while I am cooking!

I think you are right about Tescos vests and sleepsuits, I know a few people who say they come up short.

BTW your cat sounds lovely! My old cat would tolerate anything the DSs did to him when they were small. Once they got bigger he would retaliate though, I think he knew the difference between baby's over-enthusiastic petting and small child's tourturing! Hope my new kitties (I've had them 18 months) will be as good when DD gets bigger - the amount they get hugged by DS1 though I am sure they will be fine!

becklespeckle · 29/05/2008 23:44

Hi Loucee!

Ambi · 30/05/2008 04:15

clairey- poogate sounds like some sort of horror film.
DD also spins around in her door bouncer, the dog likes her in it as she's just the right height for her to lick her. Though I've noticed that she tends to approach DD gingerly from behind to avoid being grabbed.
DD has now just about grown out of her 0-3 months clothes, so more shopping entails, but I've been really lucky with the bundles from ebay.
Must go back to sleep, got an exciting coil fitting in the morning.

I thought it had crashed, ooops sorry.

That's 4am postings for you

BouncingTurtle · 30/05/2008 09:01

Blimey Ambi, 4am! I was barely awake then unlike ds .
Put him down at 7pm, woke up at 10:40, then 2:30, 4am (into our bed at this point) then up at just before 6am. And he had the same nappy on all night, and it didn't leak! Even more importantly, the inner suede layer didn't feel wet, though he had pooed in it just before we go out of bed, the little tinker. Still that is an improvement on the 3am poo!

Caz10 · 30/05/2008 09:37

hi all! will post later properly but just from having read through wanted to say loucee we have a lindam door bouncer - i think our door frames are not going to work (old house) - dh going to try it for me and if he can't get it either i can send it to you?

claraquitetirednow · 30/05/2008 09:51

Hi everyone, hope you had good nights and are all having a poo-free morning. We have just had our Wii delivered which dd1 is desperate to try out (here's news for you darlin': you ain't going near it!), I am waiting for the plumber then my friend and her little boy then the electrician so could be a hectic day. And I've already been to the doctors.

Here's how our nights are recently: night one: total nightmare, she's up half the night, I spend most of the night holding/rocking/administering Medised before handing her over to dh at about 5am and collapsing into sleep. Night two: she hardly stirs and I get more or less a full night's sleep. Night three: she's up all night, I spend most of the night holding/rocking etc etc etc. Night four: she hardly stirs.

Get the picture? Now what is all that about???? She's got a neverending cold, is starting to drool again, sometimes seems to be constipated - but I just don't know what the problem is. I remember this age being difficult with dd1 as well so I'm sure it'll pass.

BT - re your vests: now it's warmer why not just put him in a babygro with his night nappy? Then hopefully it will help with the leaking. I found that a vest, babygro and grobag were too much when it warmed up (mind you, you live up in the wild plains of north England don't you? I am a pansy southerner where it's usually a balmy 20 degrees or so...) (apart from last weekend where winter returned here while I gather you were basking in sunshine!!)

OP posts:
Amani · 30/05/2008 10:58

Ambi - what are you doing up so early in the morning?

Clara- your LO sounds a lot like my little one, but she doesn't sleep through the night due to her exzcema (sp?) - she either manages to take her gloves off and scratch herself until she wakes her self up, or gets so frustrated with not being able to itch herself with the gloves on that she wakes up anyway. Am dreading the warmer weather as it means means that if I dress her in less clothing it will give her more opportunity to itch herself but with the heat am reluctant to keep her bundled up in clothing either. Oh, by the way the longest she's ever slept is 8hrs (just once), a few times 5 hr stretchs but usually 3-4 stretches at night.

Hope everyone else is well.

Line manager emailed me today to confirm it's ok to return to work on a PT basis (28 hrs) YYYAAAYYYY!!! Just need to ask my mother in law to help out an extra day with looking after DD1 as the nursery fees are awful for putting 2 children in.

claireybee · 30/05/2008 13:51

Another poo incident this morning, dd somehow managed to open her bedroom door this morning and came trotting into my room completely naked. I then realised she had poo all over her bum so went into her room to investigate and sure enough she had pooed in her nappy, taken it off and there was poo on the sheet. Luckily that one was just a case of chucking the sheet in the washing machine!

Another reason for ds not to sleep to be added to our (extensive) catalogue too. Last night I was wondering why he was waking up every few minutes and thought he must be poorly or in pain. But no, he is sleep crawling and waking himself up I think I will just have to resign myself to not getting any sleep until all the major milestones are passed-lets hope he walks early!

BT your night nappies sound like ours! DD has an extra absorbant nappy plus extra booster (she is still very wet at night, think she stores it all up during the day!)and DS has the same but usually with 2 boosters, looks like a tellytubby in his sleepsuit! DD has wool longies and they are great-have never had a leak since we have been using them. now ds is moving in his sleep might get some for him too ut I do love him in a babygrow-makes him seem more of a baby!
