March 2007: Babies no longer: the road to Toddlerdom

1000 replies

MrLSG · 01/05/2008 22:50

MrsLSG suggested it, so her it is...

I've observed that calling Toby a baby isn't really accurate anymore, he (as one of the younger March babies - actually being born in April) is now toddlering (or is that staggering?), hence the title of the thread.

Sorry if Dad's aren't allowed around here: But Toby just loved joining in garden football with his big brother and dad earlier tonight.

Yes prune juice good

Diva did your brace work then? BTW it will take a lot more than a brace to make me look like a teenager

kittywise · 15/05/2008 08:08

lactulose is good for softening hard poos kiwi

Hi Jay !!!

Diva, it's the way of things

Sponge hope you are both better today

Divastrop · 15/05/2008 11:54

lactulose is good, but does cause excess wind IME.

fox-my braces worked eventually, but i still have marks on my front teeth from where the glue was.my teeth were horrible before i had them straightened though.

my group was cancelled anyway as one of the facilitators has had an accident.its been cancelled more than its been oni know its not her fault, but they started out with 3 running it but the pencil-pushers who run the NHS took one away

kiwibella · 15/05/2008 12:48

evenhope - the email was sent on my local NCT mail-list. Are you thinking about coming up?

thanks for the suggestions... I was panicking at the screaming. Kate settled down and made no more motions at struggling. She did poo yesterday (tmi?? ) but not yet today. I'll keep an eye on what she is eating.

I'm (selfishly) glad that you are bf so frequently because it makes Kate's intake seem 'normal'. I don't know if this will ever end but I do like it .

Foxy - how did you make your holiday bookings?

Hope everyone is ok... especially Sponge and your lo x x

fitfox · 15/05/2008 13:24

Kiwi Monti still BFs for England

Re hols, I bought the Sun Newspaper and collected 7 tokens. Then completed a form, giving 5 destinations in order of preference, and 5 dates in order of preference. We got 1st choice destination and 3rd choice date. Parc is near sea in Cornwall, in caravan/chalet, for 5 days/4 nights, with loads of fabby facilitiesfor kids (clubs, sports, swimming and saunas/jacuzzi for us, plus restaurants, cafes, shop etc). Cost £75 for 5 people (no extras)

They regularly publish them so we just keep an eye out. We have booked 3 for this year already

Diva do you have to wear a retainer now?

..I am studiously avoiding the subject of poo consistency...

spongecake · 15/05/2008 14:37

hi all, thanks for your nice comments

lo is back to eating now, and i ate today for first time in 4 days. yesterday was awful. luckily dh was off so cleaned house etc whilst i slept and went to bathroom did feel of nappies -would have come in handy when bf etc. hv says was rotovirus, am going mad with antiseptic spray, and my mum says to wipe all trolleys, swings etc- er no, think that is barmy and not practical, but see her point. if she could knit him a bubble she would.

next issue is sleeping- he wakes up and won;t go back to sleep- we seriously considered leaving him to yell as we are getting no sleep and i realy don;t want him in my bed. he is ok, just wants to play/ be with mummy. dh says he will be ill soon at this rate and so will i. he stands up in his cot and SCREAMS. last night I said no, darling, bdtime, sleep now and he slapped me away shouting NOOOOOO!!!!!!!! really made me jump

spongecake · 15/05/2008 15:01

Rosylily · 15/05/2008 17:43

cor I'm having a bonkers spaced out crazy day.

Tomorrow I am getting up at 4.30 by choice so that I can go get the ferry to scotland leaving three kids and hubby behind, just going with my sis and Hasan. Ooh I am looking forward to a weekend of escape! woohoo!

evenhope · 15/05/2008 18:55

bella I was going to but can't find anything about it. Don't want to get there and find it's not happening. Are you doing it?

kittywise · 15/05/2008 19:40

Rosy have a brill time!!! Hope the house is still standing when you get back

Just had a wonderful conversation with dd3 (2). She comes over to me with a (dead) ant held firmly in her fingers.
DD: look mum look
ME. what have you got there?
DDs) Pider
ME: Oh it's an ant,
DD: Hello Ant
Me, It's dead
DD:Hello Dead...... it's tired, ah, pider
(at which point she starts rocking and crooning and looking for a place where the unfortunate creature can rest!

I love these little snippets of conversation!

Rosylily · 15/05/2008 20:12

aw how cute Kitty!

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend whatever you are up to.
I shall

fitfox · 15/05/2008 20:27

Sponge sounds a bit like Norovirus which Monti had. Caught it from toys at CM's which a infected child had handled 24 hours previously. What a nightmare that was and I am glad that Mini-sponge is better

Kitty that is sooo sweet

Rosy - your trip sounds bliss and just what you need atm

Divastrop · 15/05/2008 20:55

sponge-my older 3 have all had rotavirus 3 times each.dont worry if the runny poos seem to go on and on,they do for up to 2 weeks iirc.i do remember ds and dd1 getting it for the 3rd time when we had just moved to manchester,i got it as well,i went insane(really)and ended up ringing their father in tears saying he better come and look after them for a couple of days cos i was sick of the smell of s**t

kitty-they are so cute when you can start having little conversations.dd2 and i were looking at her farm animal toys and she was telling me what they were(sheep, pig etc)when we got to the cow though she said ' megan'.i asked her why she kept taking Elsies shoes off in the double buggy today and shae said 'i a bugger-lugs'.

rosy-have a nice break

fitfox · 16/05/2008 15:29

Diva

DD told me the other day that: "Gordon Brown brings us fruit every day to eat, so we grow big and strong. He goes to Sainsburys and buys it, then brings it for us to eat"

Divastrop · 16/05/2008 16:35

foxy-your dc must go to a very posh school!

fitfox · 16/05/2008 19:51

Diva, why LOL???

I thought all school got fruit from Gordon?

spongecake · 16/05/2008 22:26

oh its nice to to feel better touch wood etc etc

rosy, have a nice break- your advice re being laid back reminded me what i was like before sickness/ sleep deprivation panic and have relaxed about it- must say being better helps- finally am thinking straight and its ok being woken up dh is ill with tiredness though and working stupid hours at the restaurant. no change there then.

diva! well, i guess mr brown is looking to make up for mrs thatcher taking away the milk he needs job i guess, just in case.. hmm, never thought of mobile greengrocer

evenhope · 17/05/2008 14:18

Anyone else got self-feeding struggles? With walking seems to have come instant independence. DD wants to feed herself rather than be fed (getting a bit fed up with the nightie rummaging at nights too) and seems to be permanently screaming in frustration. DH has forgotten this stage and keeps getting cross with her

I do think it'll ease a bit when she can speak but still nothing doing on that front.

Also having food issues in that she's eating mainly baby jars still (savoury ones) then our food as well but her preference is for cakes, biscuits, chocolate and puddings, just like her ma. Her sister wasn't allowed any of it at this age. I don't want to make her fat.

Do they regulate their intake at this age if they have access to unhealthy food?

fitfox · 17/05/2008 16:55

Evenhope we have the same issue here with Monti-chubs.

About two months again he just stopped letting us feed him and insisted on feeding himself. We can only feed him with a spoon if he is allowed to hold his own spoon too and make a big mess

He refuses to be strapped into any baby feeding seat, so he just sits at the table on a normal chair like everyone else - with his own plate, spoon etc and feeds himself.

We make sure his food is "finger food" so he can just pop in in his mouth. He really concentrates on spearing the food onto the prongs of his plastic fork

Monti-chubs also loves sweet things - so I try to give him baby biscuits, fruit and yogurt. I have told him he is clinically obese and will end up just another government statistic but that does seem to put him off fattening food Since he became more mobile he has not got slimmer, as is the norm. If anything he is more of a chubba than before, 'cos he can acess more food!

Divastrop · 17/05/2008 16:58

evenhope-Elsie has got to that stage with eating.if i try to feed her a yoghurt she just takes it off me.i just let her get on with it now,she has to learn, and she makes less mess than dd2 anyway.dont know about unhealthy food,my dd2 has always preffered sweet things, she isnt fat atall.

spongecake · 17/05/2008 22:25

i just provide lots of finger food, like mini fish cakes or cut it up into tiny pieces-we had steak tonight, for instance. my ds likes to have a spoon, but throws it in frustration if he can't do it! he sometimes hands it to me if he is feeling mellow i let him carry on with a mess- if he gets weetabix for breakfast he has a go, but can;t have him fiddling every mealtime, he is too hungry. i try and always eat with him so he can watch me. the worst is food throwing if he doesn;t like it. you need a tin hat

have done lots of paperwork tonight and still lots to go. am feeling virtuous, so am going to have a beer

kittywise · 18/05/2008 09:59

Ronnie hasn't been spoon fed for at least 4 months, he just refuses it. Cue food everywhere but it gets better.
Actually he'll accept yoghurt from someone

evenhope · 18/05/2008 10:46

Really annoyed with DH (again). He's been saying DD won't eat breakfast when he gives it to her. To start with she never would, but recently I've been giving her a hippabix in warm milk (if I buy weetabix the boys eat them all!) and she's been wolfing it down. Thought it was odd she wouldn't eat for him.

This morning came down and her bowl was on the side, still with food in. He told me she'd spat it out. Picked up the bowl and it was ice cold.. he's been using milk straight from the fridge! No wonder she won't eat for him

Is it possible to be that dense?

Divastrop · 18/05/2008 12:29

evenhope-he is male though.i find its just easier to do most of it myself now,as dh has always come out with the classic 'if you dont like the way i do it,do it yourself' every time ive said something wasnt quite right.

Piffle · 18/05/2008 21:47

glad the virus has gone.. Grimness indeed.
ahbthe feeding struggles
Finn lets me spoon feed him precisely 4 things. Spag bol, hipp organic cocoa pudding, cornflakes and yoghurt.
so he gets finger food and I spear things onto a fork and he self feeds, has done from the off.
we just cook chunky food!!!
he only lets me feed him things he loves which he cannot feed himself with quick enough. Guts guts guts.
well I have the no fear kid here. I'm averaging 14 heart attacks a day here. Climbed up on dds old trike stood up facing backwards and hit the concrete face first. I screamed so loud the neighbours all came running out Finn was in my arms limp and silent, I hugged him tight crying myveyes out. Sat down and dared to look at his head. He said boo mama and giggled.
relief met with disbelief huge grazed lump on head...Teflon skull.
I'm not cut out for this. Dd and ds1 are and were thoroughly careful and cautious kids.

He got my mums £450 glasses on Friday and trashed them. He is a force...
right must gallop off and do something useful. Leg and hip being rotten last week, but getting better.
