independence

conkertree · 23/04/2008 15:57

yeh i should be working.

helibee - its St Paul's in Provanmill, Glasgow - quite wee - only about 30 - 40 go, but they do a lot in the community. DH organises exchanges to Zambia with the young people, and runs a radio station etc.

Its fine, but not entirely sure if we'd keep going if he didnt work there. People are nice, but would rather go to one that was a bit bigger so we could do more with music and things.

mmm holidays - back at work two days and i'm dreaming of them already.

tasha22 · 23/04/2008 20:47

really, knickers? hmm, well if you think they're ok I might try him with some, he loves little snacky things like cheerios and peas. He was munching on some chunks of beef earlier so in fact youre probably right, he'd be ok with raisins. I'll probably still get some of those big fat juicy types though, I hate those sour little dried black bastards, like spiders with no legs!

shrinkingsagpuss · 24/04/2008 07:43

James, as a rule of thumb, if he can pick the raisins up himself then he's probably safe to eat them. obviously you still have to be careful, but if he's putting them in his own mouth he cn judge how big they are and is more likely to co-ordinate swallowing rather than inhaling. Grapes obviously are one of the excpetions!!

Evie has just discovered raisins, yum yum.

Caitlin has big raisins in the fruit bread which I toast for her. She sucks then for a while them gives them a good chew and she's never had a problem with them.

Nice to hear from you mamamila - your pics of mila are super cute.

We had a lovely family night out last night and Caitlin had a wonderful time. We went to a basketball game as DH does the press work for the home side and she had a blast. It was very crowded and noisy but she loved every moment and spent the whole game bouncing vigourously on either mine or DH's lap. She does actually watch the game and you can see her little head turn to the left, then the right to follow the players on court. She went to her first game when she was 15 days old so she's well used to it by now. The game was shown live on Setanta and I think Caitlin must have been on TV as I saw the camera pointed at her a couple of times as we were sitting in the second row from the front. We are taping the re-run this afternoon to have a nose through it.

Thanks tash xx

tasha22 · 24/04/2008 11:49

no problem hin hope your ds2 doesnt get it but im sure he wont. my cousin is 4 and was playing with all my boys but i was worried at the time too.

conkertree · 24/04/2008 12:18

hi folks - hope your ds is ok pink.

very excited - we are off to buy our hens tomorrow - phoned up and the woman is going to leave them in a crate under her porch incase she's not in when we arrive. i am to leave the money in an envelope under her door - i love that we can do that still. slightly nervous about how we will look trying to encourage three hens into a cardboard box as we havent looked after them before and i am going on the course on how to look after them on sunday - so they have to make it till then with us winging it.

the basketball sounds like fun hersetta - you do sound like you have an exciting life.

Hersetta · 24/04/2008 13:13

Your hens sound fab conker - six guinea pigs and a demented bunny are enough for us! Will you be having your own free range eggs at home now?

Hardly exciting conker - between working full time and doing stuff with Caitlin we hardly go out at all now.

conkertree · 24/04/2008 14:01

yup - dh has been building their shed all week, and its looking good - not too big which i'm pleased with cause we do plan to sell the house soon.

three chickens running round a bit of the garden. can lay up to 300 each a year but i think it wont be as much as that. will need to find people to give them too so we dont get completely sick of omlettes etc.

Hersetta · 24/04/2008 14:55

Wow - 900 eggs a year is a lot. Is there such a thing as an interesting things to do with eggs cookbook!!

Make lots of chocolate mousse - my mum uses 8 eggs in hers!

Meandmyjoe · 24/04/2008 14:58

Hi all, God my dh keeps banging on about keeping a couple of chickens. I'd be scared of them getting bird flu though! Besides, we already have a baby and an very dopey but loveable dog so I have put my foot down! Must be nice to have fresh eggs though, I don't think I'd ever get sick of omlettes, yum!

Anyway, just wondered if any of you mummies knew roughly how long a baby takes to learn to go forward crawling after going backward for a week??! Or is it like asking how long is a peice of string?! Joe seems to be even more frustrated at going backwards than before he could crawl at all.... sigh

tasha22 · 24/04/2008 15:27

all mine were different ages when they started crawling ds1 was about 7 months i think ds2 was about 8 months and ds3 not sure yet but he will be 8 months on the 30th so think it like asking how long is a peice of string lol have you tried puting a ball down and gradually rolling it a little forward or any wee toys that gradually go forward when a baby touches them? i found them quite good with ds2 although not having any luck with ds3 he just streches out and pulls himself forward to whatever is out of reach.

chickens aww id love 1 or 2 but my garden is concrete. and now i want omlette yummy!

ive been trying to get ds2 to talk without any luck. he says hiya. and im not sure if these count as words or just sounds but mamamamama and dadadadadada? but apparently by the time hes 18 months he should be sasying between 6 and 20 recognisable words. i think hes too good at communicating without talking.

trying to sort out their room atm and they have far too many toys a lot of them dont even get played with because they are at the bottom of the toy box so im going to put the most of them away and rotate them every week or so. they arent getting appreciated.

Meandmyjoe · 24/04/2008 16:17

Yes I have tried getting him to follow toys but he gets mad and whinges! When he really tries to crawl he ends up going backwards and is even further away from the toy!

I'm sure it'll come in time. Just feel sorry for him as he gets very angry and squeals, the smacks the floor, then cries! Bless him. He's so close to doing it though. I keep getting on the floor and crawling around in front of him to try and spur him on, he just thinks I'm nuts!

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 24/04/2008 16:18

hi all, just got back from town having been there all day, my feet are killing me! owowow...

Weird old day, I was supposed to be meeting my friend and going to mums n toddlers, I texted her an hour before group to ask her if she was still going and she said yeah but she was running a bit late, so I said I'd see her there, but she never turned up. I texted her towards the end of the session and just said "everything ok? toddler meltdown? " and I know she got the text as I get read receipts, but no response. Don't know what to think now!

Mums and toddlers was a bit poo, again. there are loads of chairs in the room but all the mums had arranged their coats, handbags and childrens coats/rucksacks/changing bags on every single spare chair, so I was the only mum sat on the floor with my scalding hot cup of coffee because I'm not sure what the etiquette is! can I go up and move a childs rucksack/coat? (wouldn't touch anyones handbag, obviously) or do I have to ask permission for the selfish cows to move the stuff? they could see I was looking for somewhere to sit down but not a one of them offered to move their crap. Again, no-one really spoke to me, I just felt like a complete knob tbh. James spent the whole session screaming excitedly in other babies faces and making them look scared (boys!)

So came out feeling dejected, texted my friend to ask if she wanted to come for a coffee, she said yes "but I'll be an hour or so" so I hung about town for an hour and a half waiting to hear from her, then get a text saying she's not coming either. So I ended up in M&S seeking solace in a piece of carrot cake this diet is a bit of a non-starter.

Went in argos to buy James a little swing but it was too bulky and heavy to carry home, so took him to the park but after waiting almost 15min for an empty swing (yet another selfish woman there, she could see I was waiting!) gave up and came home. bah.

But on the up side I got lo some lovely board books, a couple of dvd's and a couple of little toys, and got myself some shoes and trainers, so not a completely duff day!

Pink, fingers crossed your lo doesn't get sf! conker, good luck with the chickens, I've always wanted some, was gonna get an eglu! Joe, James is still only going backwards commando style, it's been almost two weeks since he started. I'll let you know as soon as he starts going forward, right now it just seems beyond him.

OP posts:
tasha22 · 24/04/2008 16:51

my freinds baby is nearly 8 months he was doing the backward crawl for a while and was getting frustrated but it wasnt long before he started going forward so prob just a few more days

james sorry you didnt have a great day at mums and tods it is great when the mums are friendly. do you have another one you could try nearby?

yeah i know i should be sorting

helibee · 24/04/2008 17:08

hi all, meandmyjoe-callum went backwards for about 3-4 weeks before he went forwards and now there is no stopping him!

pink-hope your ds is ok and echo the others on the thread, it should be apparent if he gets it.

tasha-thanks for the CAT, i'll check in a min, Callum needs milk, be back soon . . .
