What's up Ria?

milkyJammy · 21/01/2008 13:13

Have just had biscuits

thisisRialifebaby · 21/01/2008 16:55

Hi. Have been to evil tesco and spent a fortune on fruit and veg. I'm back with you for now .

Piddling down so maybe no walking today though. What sort of biscuits jammy?

I had really evil black depression last week and it really knocked the stuffing out of me. Seem to be through the other side a bit now.

Sputnik, re your stair walking, how long for and how often, if you don't mind me asking?

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 21/01/2008 17:07

Jammy you are doing really well! I can't get out for walks in this hideous weather.

Ria, you ok love?

welcome back Ria. I felt depressed today. Ate biscuits (digestives and biscotti) and chocolate and had peanut butter Am just going to write it off as a blot on the otherwise healthy landscape though and start afresh tomorrow. Only thing to do really.

thisisRialifebaby · 21/01/2008 19:49

Hi jammy & bumper.

I think taking it one day at a time is the best plan.

I am feeling better today. I had a weird week last week what with DS2s nose, DS1s bullying and DH hospital trip. Also I got an email from my friend that really pissed me off as it was quite sneery (she has hardly had time to throw a "hello" my way since her new partner left their family and moved in, DS1 doesn't really understand why he's now more or less been dropped when he was going for tea once or twice a week when she was alone, I ended up looking after her kids at the weekend too as she had a family crisis, but not a big enough one for her to cancel her plans, just the babysitter's), I probably overreacted but it got to me. Then after that it just felt really weighed down and couldn't get out of bed, and then ended up eating crap because I had hardly any energy to move.

I am aiming for more fruit and vegetables and wholegrains etc, more water, no booze til the weekend and a little exercise every day (rather than overdoing it once and giving up), to improve my state of mind rather than focussing on weight-loss.

Here's hoping!

Sorry. Long post

thisisRialifebaby · 21/01/2008 19:50

That's the plan for today anyway

milkyJammy · 21/01/2008 20:07

Sorry you had a bad week last week Ria. Hope things turn around.

Soubnds like a good plan

SputnikEnRegalia · 21/01/2008 21:24

Sorry you've been having a hard time Ria. We are only human after all. Re the stair walking, I haven't done any in the end as I'm still having toe problems, and might have to go to the doctor's (I hate doctors) as I'm suspecting an ingrowing toenail (ugh)

Anyway I've always done it in the past to lose weight and been quite sucessful. There's a flight of 20 steps outside my house and I can make a circuit of them as there are 2 IYSWIM, about 20 paces apart. What I normally do is several flights (takes 10 or so just to warm up), interspersed with other exercises like lunges or lifting light weights. That way I would get a good amount of heart pumping without facing total collapse! I try and do at least 30 flights, but was getting up to 50 or 60. I started taking it very easy but it didn't actually take long to get much easier. Anyway, I would spend maybe 30 or 40 minutes, but a lot of that was the other exercises. I really wish I'd kept it up.

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 21/01/2008 21:36

Ria, have you had your thyroid checked? My mum had a serious underactive thyroid and for a while couldn't get out of bed. It is also characterised by feeling down, in fact PND is often a misdiagnosed underactive thyroid, and my mum thinks that the depression she has suffered with a lot of her life is related to it.

Any of these symptoms sound familiar to you?

"The symptoms of hypothyroidism relate to a general "slowing down" of the body's functions. They include:

  • feeling tired and sleeping excessively
  • easily feeling the cold
  • dry and thickened skin
  • coarse, thinning hair and eyebrows and brittle nails
  • sore muscles, slow movements and weakness
  • depression and problems with memory and concentration
  • weight gain
  • constipation
  • fertility problems and increased risk of miscarriage
  • heavy, irregular or prolonged menstrual periods "

Thanks bumper. I did have blood tests before I got PG with DS3 but they were clear. I suppose my hormones could be buggered up after being PG. I might mention it next time I go to the GP (I am going to see the new partner next time, might be a good move).

Thanks sputnik - that would KILL me!

I have been out for a 25 minute walk since the boys went to bed as the rain had stopped. Feel better for it. Would have liked to have gone a bit further but am limited by street lighting (I am far more comfortable being out at night now that escaped murderer is in prison again. So irrational...)

SputnikEnRegalia · 22/01/2008 09:31

Well that's why I do the other exercises, I do a few flights thne when I'm huffing and puffing I stop to do something less strenuous to get my breath back. So you can start gently and work up. But as I said it's quite surprising how quickly you can take on more. And it's worked for me (twice), without serious dieting. If only I hadn't got pg and put it all back on.

Sounds like you should consider doing the thyroid test. Anyway, well done for getting out and walking again, it does make you feel better, it's just finding the motivation to get up off your bottom (well know that feeling)

Also, meant to say yesterday Jammy, you have been such a paragon of virtue and example to us all on this thread, you are bound to have a bad day once in a while. Go easy on yourself

thisisRialifebaby · 22/01/2008 11:28

This morning, quite by chance, I have found out how to get miles on my pedometer. That's more exciting than steps

thisisRialifebaby · 22/01/2008 15:52

I'm having a weirdly good day. I've walked to school and back three times - long way back once, shops twice - and I've done over 6 miles or 12290 steps. Am quite chuffed with that

milkyJammy · 23/01/2008 13:14

Well, I thought I'd had a bad couple of days. And to be fair, they weren't great foodwise, but have just worked out that I walked 2 miles on Monday and 3 on Tuesday (even though ti felt like a stroll round the block with another mum chum). And that's not counting the walk to and from baby group Monday morning. So am heartened that it's not been all bad and will now pick up where we left off.

thisisRialifebaby · 23/01/2008 13:27

Hi jammy. Little and often is the way forward I think. Don't think I'll hit 7 miles today, but I did mop the kitchen floor, shame really because it's almost nice weather, but my motivation is having a lie-in!

Can't be perfect all the time!

milkyJammy · 23/01/2008 15:45

4 brisk miles round town this afternoon

thisisRialifebaby · 23/01/2008 17:48

well done jammy. I had a nap

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 30/01/2008 19:51

Helloooooo!

today, for the first time I walked 14000 steps! and a good 4000 were carrying dd in the sling! and no bad stuff for 2 whole days (ok, that's good for me!)

thisisRialifebaby · 30/01/2008 22:46

Well done bumper. That's better than me, though I have walked to school amd back at least once every day this week.

Did I ever tell you how much I despise freshly washed jeans?

milkyJammy · 31/01/2008 09:05

Well I've been very lax the past week . Got to see GP this morning, who will weigh me, so I'll get an "official" measure of what my weight has done in the past 4 weeks [gulp!]. May be back looking for (virtual) chocolate later ...

thisisRialifebaby · 31/01/2008 11:10

good luck jammy

milkyJammy · 31/01/2008 11:21

Well, she didn't weight me but has reminded me of the need to be healthier

howdyousolveaproblemlikeRia · 29/02/2008 22:54

Riallymusttryharder · 04/03/2008 10:10
