Here we go again...

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
BadZelda · 05/11/2007 08:39

Yeah...it's definitely enough to put me off drinking for a while...or doing anything else that might lead to a hangover!

Elsbells · 05/11/2007 08:40

Thanks BZ
R the pieces of carrot or green beans 'pinky finger' size?
I am still scared about the whole choking thing as Daisy mentioned her DD swallowed a piece of carrot.

I stopped BF DS when I weaned him but was still expressing so used to mix with the puree. I guess I just use the formula for DD now.

HaveYourselfaNortyLittleXmas · 05/11/2007 08:49

Morning ladies.....my DD is taking quite a mixture of different purees now and loves it. I mix the mash potato with formula and she always has her bottle first.

It's so sweet to see her in her high-chair...she sits up really well now and opens her mouth ready

Have to say I'm also nervous about choking on finger foods...any large lumps I have left she heaves on now....you don't have to wait until 6 months then?

BadZelda · 05/11/2007 09:00

hmmm it's not about 'lumps' I think Norty...DD spits out bits that aren't manageable for her. I think when they're eating stuff isn't pureed AT ALL. If it's a mash / puree with a lump in it, that's different entirely and probably will make them gag / choke because they're not expecting it, IYSWIM?

Elsbells · 05/11/2007 09:01

Morning Norty
I may try a finger of carrot on my DD and see how it goes. It would be easier for me to just steam extra veg and her eat alongside her older brother after her bottle.

I have bought lots of apples and pear to whizz so will do that too. Will doing both confuse her?

Bugger
Must get ready as have baby massage for DD and get DS to preschool. Thank goodness there was one locally that took them from the age of 2 to give DD and I 'just us' time.

Have a good morning all.

HaveYourselfaNortyLittleXmas · 05/11/2007 09:12

Oh may give it a go.....she is able to pick things up a bit more easily now rather than just lunging for things and getting lucky....and of course EVERYTHING goes in her mouth so it may be worth a try.

I steam veg most days so it wouldn't be too difficult....although not next week.....this time next week I won't have a kitchen!

BadZelda · 05/11/2007 09:13

Lucky you Ellsbells...my plan was to have DD1 in nursery a bit of the time to give me a break with DD2...but unfortunately DH was supposed to be organising that whilst I was PG and working fulltime...and didn't quite manage it, so now there's no space. Still, I guess we've saved loads of money by me looking after them both fulltime and now she's got a place at a v good pre-school from Jan - so it's worked out in the end.

Elsbells · 05/11/2007 09:18

This place isn't too bad that DS attends as only for 3 hrs 3 mornings a week and council run so not too pricey. He was at a private nursery when I was working but he left after DD was born. Just too expensive to justify. BZ, you are going to love having time for just you and DD2 in Jan.

Just been reading the BLW blog in more detail - really interesting.

Norty guess you are having a new kitchen put in. Hope that doesn't get stressful.

Aaaaaaaaarrggh I have slipped back into MN and haven't dried my hair.
Bye (again)

andiemisletoe · 05/11/2007 09:23

morning all
have been thinking about the blw thing as well
the finger foods need to be left till about 6 months so they have a gag reflex and can move the food from front to back. With spoon feeding they don't need that skill.
BLW they start it themselves by actually taking food and developmentally that happens at around the 6 month mark
if you do 'pure' blw then you don't use a spoon at all unless they do it the idea is that they are in complete control of how much and what they eat it is based on demand bf ifyswim
there have been some raging arguments on the weaning threads about 'pure' blw versus finger foods and spoon feeding together I can see I might end up doing a mixture so not 'pure' blw
however my plan might be just to give lo xmas dinner as his first meal

BadZelda · 05/11/2007 09:27

actually I don't think all babies are identical - so MOST babies will be ready at six months, but you know yourself when yours is ready IYSWIM

Unfortunately won't have 5 days a week to babymoon when DD1 goes to pre-school (mornings only the first term) - as I'll be working 3 days a week (2 of those in an office). Still - I quite enjoy working a bit, so long as I still have some kid time...just worried as DD2 will still only be seven months - and I didn't work outside the home till DD1 was over 2...so seems a bit unfair (and not quite sure how it will work with BF)

nowbringussomeJammypudding · 05/11/2007 09:36

Morning all

BZ I will also be going out to work 2 days per week when DD is 7 months. Had originally thought that by then would be happy to drop to BF first and last thing only, now would like to keep more going if possible. Not sure how it's going to work out yet, time will tell.

morning

I think your employers are obliged to provide somewhere for you to express and store. Just make sure its well labelled!

andiemisletoe · 05/11/2007 10:10

I went back when ds1 was 7 months and just did morning and night feeding and he had water or whispers cow's milk in the day as he refused point blank to drink formula. He obviously drank loads from me because when I stopped bf when he was 1 he suddenly started drinking loads in the day
I know people who carried on demand feeding when they were off and just did cup feeding with water/ebm when they were working and it seemed fine and their supply wasn't effected

am vv pleased have just done second coat of paint on bathroom woodwork so can clean up now yeh!

andiemisletoe · 05/11/2007 12:27

have I killed the thread?

flashbangfoxy · 05/11/2007 12:38

No, don't worry Andiem, I'm back now

andiemisletoe · 05/11/2007 12:43

how's the feeding going foxy?

BadZelda · 05/11/2007 12:54

Hi there - I'm back too - until DD1 notices I'm on the puter and starts hassling me that is!

BadZelda · 05/11/2007 12:58

And that's reassuring Andie - I was just worrying because she feeds so much during the day now - I guess she'll be maybe taking a few fewer feeds and more solids by then though. She's started refusing bottles too. At least DH will be home with her on the two days I'm not around, so that should be ok.

flashbangfoxy · 05/11/2007 13:04

its going well thanks. I'd be very shocked if there hasn't been a significant improvement this week. I have realised I rarely feed her when I'm out and about. Probably because I generally have to be rushing somewhere or have another child with me so sitting in the car for 15 minutes to feed lo just doesn't work. Today we were out having coffee with another Mum I met at the HV clinic and she had a good feed there. As well as one at 6.30 and one at 9.30. Not sure how long I can keep this up for!!!

Is that your bathroom finished Andiem, can you clean up now?

All this weaning talk! Can't they stay tiny babies? Pleeeeeeaaaaaase?

andiemisletoe · 05/11/2007 13:16

bathroom half cleaned up dh needs to put loo and basin back tonight and put cupboards up (we do have another loo )

glad feeding going well foxy my lo is a right porker he has fed from midnight at 3, 5,6,8,11,12,13 but he only feeds for 5 mins max so i think he is a bit of a snacker
am off out for a walk and shopping now I need some fresh air

nowbringussomeJammypudding · 05/11/2007 13:39

Just had morning out at baby group and shops. DD just had masked potato for lunch. Unfortunately I'm not used to cooking just one potato and didn't think that in the time it would take to cook the small amount of water needed to cover just 1 spud would boil away, so have burnt the pan

Reassuring to hear that might be able to keep supply enough to feed her on the days I'm not at work. I knew they had to give me space to express, so hope to do that on work days. As for labelling it, my mum used to be a nurse on the childrens ward and one night a porter helped himself to milk from the fridge and drank a glass of EBM - he said it was delicious!

Glad feeding going well Foxy, hope weight is good. And hope bathroom is finished soon andiem

flashbangfoxy · 05/11/2007 14:47

Thanks Jammy! Have ruined many a pan of potatoes - but usually because I'm on here! How is your lo enjoying her food?

DynamiteDaisy · 05/11/2007 14:57

afternoon..just a quicky before the school run. I haven't stopped today at all and am knackered.

I think your questions have been answered elsbells? Re the carrot she had, she did gag on the first little bit but then she chomped on it and swallowed and went diving i the bowl for more. The cauliflower I broke off a small floret that she could hold and the parsnip was sort of mashed as they were roast and I just gave her the insides. she seems more than able to get the food to the back of her mouth, but I'm still just giving her wee tastes.

Just got back from a weaning talk at the clinic. Amongst other things they said not to introduce mashed/lumpy food till 7-8 mo, finger food from 9 mo, and a good first finger food is rich tea biscuits broken into two . I thought my HV team were good until that. She seemed quite shocked that DD had eaten lumpy food already.

she also told a woman with an extreme peanut allergy that she sould just give her son some nuts and see how he reacts. I think the woman was a bit sceptical.

another thing was to give white bread as brown bread is difficult to digest. Is that right? I always gave DS wholemeal bread and brown rice.

andiemisletoe · 05/11/2007 15:00

aaagh daisy where do they find them
I always give wholemeal bread as it has less sugar than white do use white rice though but the doh advice says finger foods from 6 months
