Yes they are really lovely together now, Izzy laughs at Jake all the time.

WestCountryLass · 31/10/2007 21:06

I've had a really draining day. Remember I told you I took DD to the opticians as we thought she had a lazy eye and they said she was long sighted and referred her to the Eye Hospital?

Well it has been a drawn out process as the referral was sent via my GP and got lost. So the week before last I chased the appointment up and they did not have her referral but saw me that week and her responses to the standard eye test were not consistent so she had to go in again for more tests (with the dialating pupil drops etc).

Anyway, it turns out she is slightly long sighted but actually has a toxoplasmosis/toxocara scar on her retina and is partially sighted in that eye She has a small amount of peripheral vision but now is, basically, blind in that eye.

It was a real shock to hear this, I thought she was going to be prescribed some glasses and we would be on our way. The Opthamologist said she should be able to drive but she won't be able to have a job where driving is involved but so long as nothing happens to her other eye that is the only problem.

CaptainDippy · 31/10/2007 21:08

Awwww, that is lovely, IDOC! Looking forward to P being able to sit up properly for herself - she's getting a bit too & frustrated atm for my liking, bless her. Thinking it could be a while before she can sit unaided though because her great big fat wobbly bubba cheeks tend to weigh her head down a little too much.

weepotion · 31/10/2007 21:13

oh wcl - hope you are ok. it must have been a shcok to hear when you were not expecting that. x

Idreamofchocolate · 31/10/2007 21:22

WCL, so sorry to hear about your DD's vision. It's such a shock to hear that there's anything wrong with your little one. Thinking of you x

oooggs · 31/10/2007 21:26

back from choc party

wcl - have you and dd are ok

normabutty · 31/10/2007 21:31

WCL - so sorry to hear about your lo's eye. hope you're ok. x

Am gonna be very cheeky with Venture and have the free sitting and get £75 worth of pics (the value of the voucher) and nothing else .

Thanks for that link IDOC, could go there when we visit the in-laws. The prices seem very good, will tell dh about it.

Eddas · 31/10/2007 21:32

DON'T GO TO VENTURE, they do some good photos BUT they are VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY(are you getting the point)VERY VERY expensive, I mean £75 is for a 7"x5" and that's it Sounds like they're giving you a deal but trust someone who's been that it is better to not go. Their photos are lovely but unless you have a spare couple of grand you'll walk out saying there was so many lovely photos but all I could have is the free 1 they let me have

Anyway! How's everyone's evenings

I went to go food shopping at Asda, left at 8. Got there at 8.20ish, they shut at 9 and I hadn't realised I used to work in Safeway and HATED it when people did a full trolley load at closing time so came home with(instead of the full trolley) 3 bottles of red wine, some cookies, a chicken, tea bags and 2 xmas catalogues

Oh well I can go back tomorrow, yipeeeeeeeeeeeee

NorthernLurker · 31/10/2007 21:44

WCL - sorry to hear you've had such a shock. How old is dd?

WestCountryLass · 31/10/2007 21:55

She is 3 and she hasn't got a clue, love her. She just said to DH when he got in "the man put the drops in and burnt my eyes (they stung) and then he didn't give me the pink glasses". I was convinced she would be prescribed glasses and told her and she said she wanted pink ones.

Eddas · 31/10/2007 21:58

WCL, hope dd is ok, bless her. My dd would've been miffed about the glasses too. Nothing more to worry about bless em!

Sexonlegs · 31/10/2007 22:00

WCL, I am so sorry to hear about your daughters eyesight/vision problems. Did they say what could have caused it. Hope that you can get lots of support. xx

WestCountryLass · 31/10/2007 22:07

Yes, basically, they think I was infected with toxoplasmosis in pregnancy She could have been exposed to it since birth but they said it was probably congenital.

oooggs · 31/10/2007 22:09

isn't that from cats?

Sexonlegs · 31/10/2007 22:14

Oooggs, I think it can be found in cat poo.

Right, bed time for me.

Sleep well lovely ladies. xx

busywithIzzy · 31/10/2007 22:18

WCL - So sorry to hear about DDs eyesight problems. It must have been such a shock.

elkiedee · 31/10/2007 22:25

Sorry to hear about your daughter's eye, WCL.

Today's been a long and busy day, I gather my mum will be here for a much shorter time tomorrow.

Glad to see you're still around even if not much time to post, smb.

Hi to everyone else!

busywithIzzy · 31/10/2007 22:26

Thinking of you all WCL xx

Eddas PMSL at you going shopping and then not getting much...oh well as you say there's always tomorrow

WestCountryLass · 31/10/2007 22:29

It isn't specifically cats, although we do have a cat. It is found on any animal infected with toxoplasma, soil, water infected with toxoplasma, meats etc . I actually think I was infected when we went to my Mums the Xmas I was pregnant with my DD as she had problems with her cess pit (this is gross) and the water/sewege was not draining away properly but they did not know until the slurry backed up.

busywithIzzy · 31/10/2007 22:31

How are you feeling about it WCL?

NorthernLurker · 31/10/2007 22:34

WCL - I know this isn't going to feel much of a comfort now but at least you have this information at the young age she is. This means you will be able to make nursery/school etc aware of the situation from the start and anything that they can do to benefit dd will be done right from the start.
The pink glasses thing is pretty heartbreaking tbh - sounds like she was very brave though. If so - what about a mummy and daughter shopping trip to buy a little 'something that isn't pink glasses for dd' - a new purse, ace stripy tights or hair clips?? I know that everyone tries not to spoil/over indulge but in your shoes right now I think maybe you both could do with some retail therapy

WestCountryLass · 31/10/2007 22:48

I do feel guilty. At the end of the day, whether she was infected in or out of the womb then it is ultimately my fault.

My eldest DS has an eye condition called nystagmus so we have visited this issue before, like what affect it will have on him etc so in many ways it is fine as we have come to terms with the fact that he won't be able to have certain jobs and now they have said the same for DD (at least they will be able to share that issue together as they grow older). The additional issue with DD though is that if she has a problem with her other eye then she will basically be snookered, they said she would be registered blind then but what can you do/say, you can't let yourself worry too much about ifs, buts or maybes.

NorthernLurker · 31/10/2007 23:05

WCL - do NOT feel guilty (easy said I know)
You are a wonderful mother and have done everything you can for dd and will always be there for her. This is NOT YOUR FAULT!

My dd2 has a congenital heart defect. We don't know why and never will. Thankfully it's never caused her a problem as yet and I pray that will continue life long. When we first learnt this (she was 6 weeks old) I blamed myself - and for all I know something I did in early pregnancy may have caused it - or it may not. I will never know and I suppose I don't need to - my job is not to feel guilt but to be hopeful for the future and that's your job too.

Is it ok if I pray for you all tonight?

busywithIzzy · 31/10/2007 23:06

WCL - Sorry for asking. I didn't mean to make you say you feel guilty. I meant it to be supportive and offering an ear to talk it through with it you wanted to. I am not very good with words...sorry.

CaptainDippy · 31/10/2007 23:20

Praying here too! DO NOT blame yourself WCL and {{{{{hugs}}}}} Sorry I cannot be more eloquent atm; but off to bed as I am very tired. Retail therapy sounds like an excellent plan. xxxx
