Au pairs have v low hours I think so tend to be used more for school age children.

Gigitree · 06/09/2020 16:53

@SRS1311 thanks - she doesn’t ever seem to be having a leap when the app says she should be so maybe she’s just off kilter with their timings and she’s having her leap a bit early - I hope it only lasts a week, he sleep has been crapper than usual since last Monday so hopefully we’re near the end of it now (if it is that)

@Missgemini sounds similar to us then! I wouldn’t mind so much if her 2.5 hour stints of sleep were solid but she seems to need me to resettle her during which is Becoming so exhausting!

SRS1311 · 06/09/2020 17:41

@Gigitree I think I read that it could be a week before or a week after the 12 weeks ..hopefully it is that and your coming to the end of it!

@Missgemini I'll need childcare when mine is 1 years old. I would never have thought to start looking at nurseries until someone mentioned it recently. I then started doing enquiries and couldnt believe how early nurseries got booked up. A lot of the good ones already have waiting lists and one only had a few places left for 2022!! I've had to start planning and thinking about it now when I really could have done without it!

mrssunshinexxx · 06/09/2020 17:41

@Missgemini I'm not returning to work but if I had to I wouldn't use a nursery I would use a childminder as it's a homely environment they get more attention. I say that as someone who has worked in childcare for 9 years as a nanny and in nurseries

Gigitree · 06/09/2020 18:32

I do hope so @SRS1311 and I hope you have a better night tonight!

Missgemini · 06/09/2020 19:04

Thanks ladies re: childcare. Will ideally enrol the boy to nursery when he's 3. I'd better go and register interest at the nearest nurseries seeing as waiting lists are so crazy. Before the age of 3, childminder might be the way then.

Smiffette · 06/09/2020 19:42

I'm lucky my mum iS close enough and able to help out. Both DH and I are taking a day off each to look after DD then mum 2 days and nursery 1 day.
I go back to work when she will be 1 year and 2 weeks

Magpiefeather · 06/09/2020 20:07

I know lots of people love childminders but personally I felt more comfortable with my first in a nursery. More staff means there is less chance of being stuck at the last minute (eg childminder is ill) and also more people to look out for your little one. I would go and look at both options if you’re not sure and you will get a gut feeling for one or the other!

I registered mine at the nursery my eldest went to from Easter term next year. Only two mornings a week at first.

UKtoSK · 07/09/2020 02:31

@Gigitree my girl is now 9 weeks (10 by due date) and so also not supposed to be in a wonder week right now but we’ve had the exact same sleep issues the past few days. I was so tired yesterday and I just kept crying all day, I can’t help feeling like I’m always doing something wrong. She’s been getting over stimulated by the evening, I think because of her most recent wonder week and the new skills she learnt. She starts kicking and moving like a lunatic and won’t calm down to sleep. She’s not in pain, she’s smiling and babbling the whole time. But gets over excited and then vomits up her entire bedtime feed and we have to start all over again. Trying for an earlier night tonight...

Gigitree · 07/09/2020 05:22

I’m sorry to hear that @UKtoSK but I’ve been feeling the same way.
I thought we were off to a better start tonight we got a good 4 hour chunk early on, she had a feed and then went back down. But then she’s woken up again 2.5 hours later, flinging herself all over her cot, I spent 30 mins trying to resettle her and it wasn’t working so I assumed she was now hungry, but she had a few sips of milk, then refused anymore. She then did a poo so I assumed that was why she didn’t want the milk. So changed her, offered her the bottle and she keeps refusing it, now she’s snoozing on my shoulder but keeps fidgeting all over the place so I don’t think I can put her down yet.
It’s going to be morning time soon 😩

mrssunshinexxx · 07/09/2020 07:00

Well I got my first sleep through last night I feel so proud. I wish I had used a sleeping bag sooner unless it's a fluke and nothing to do with that but I was so paranoid about temperatures

Gigitree · 07/09/2020 07:51

Wow @mrssunshinexxx that’s incredible I’m so jealous! How old is your little one now?
What sleeping bag have you got? We have Grace in a tommee tippee snuggle thing but she’s getting too big for it now so we need a sleeping bag next

Busylizzie85 · 07/09/2020 08:24

We had two good nights from Ivy she slept last night from 7:50 till 1:45 fed and then went till 5:15 fed again and then went to sleep for about another hour. She's just turned 12 weeks and the last two weeks her sleep has been very hit and miss with a lot of nights awake every 2.5 hours so I am hoping we've come to a turning point.
Sleep wear wise we use at the moment a 1 tog or 1.5 tog sleep bags from John Lewis and TU at Sainsbury’s. The John Lewis one is really nice as has a separate zip you can undo for changing nappies if needed.

mrssunshinexxx · 07/09/2020 08:28

@Gigitree I'm pretty sure it will be a fluke and she won't do it tonight !
She's just in a 2.5tog with a baby grow and socks under I was really paranoid to use one until now as she's a very hot baby her hair gets sweaty easily but the temp has dropped so much I felt it was the right time to try it to see if she slept better x

babbafett · 07/09/2020 10:51

@mrssunshinexxx that's great. I found the sleeping bag works wonders for my DSs sleep. I need to buy a ton more tho as he always manages to spit up on them the second they are out of the wash.
I find the nights that we dont have any clean ones and we use a tucked in blanket he wakes up looking for a cuddle. I think he gets cold as his legs nearly always end up over the blanket with all his thrashing about.

Zoey92 · 07/09/2020 11:40

Well the infacol seems to be working with LO shes taking bottles better, also bought the tommy tippee Anti-colic bottles as they were on offer in Asda for a good price.

@Gigitree we're going through that too with the kicking and wriggling for what seems like hours, she had her last bottle at 10:30 and slept till 3am had abit grunt and wiggle about then went back over till 5:20am had a bottle and went back over till 7:30.
That was a good night though, the other night it went on for a good 3hrs, I'm hoping it was just her injections sending her all to pot.
She's also had a bout of colic which on friday was heartbreaking 💔

SRS1311 · 07/09/2020 11:42

For those that are formula feeding - how often do you feed your little one and how many ounces?

Mine is 9 weeks today but I feel like I'm having a confidence crisis on feeding. Last couple of weeks he has been screaming when I try to feed him and generally making it very difficult. I usually feed him every 3 hrs but now I'm thinking he just isnt hungry after 3 hrs and hence the tantrum.

babbafett · 07/09/2020 12:10

@srs1311 My DS is a bit random he could look for a bottle anywhere between 2 - 4 hours and will take 6oz to 8oz. I find he tends to spit up a lot more when he has 8oz, I dont think he always needs it so I try him with a dummy after 6oz now to see if he just wants something to suck on. If he his still hungry he will spit it out or create an almighty wracket when I take the bottle out of his mouth so then we keep going. He will usually have the full 8oz first thing in the morning. He no longer looks for a bottle during the night but even when he was he would always take a lot less compared to the day

babbafett · 07/09/2020 12:11

@SRS1311 forgot to mention by LO is 13weeks

Blizy · 07/09/2020 14:14

My dd is 13 weeks, she drinks 4 - 41/2 with the odd 5oz every 2-4 hours. She's still a tiny wee thing though, she only weighs 10lb.

Gigitree · 07/09/2020 14:53

@mrssunshinexxx the temp has been a nightmare hasn’t it? I feel like we’ve gone from one extreme to another. Room temp last night was 21 when we went to
Bed which according to tommee tippee we had her dressed appropriately in a 1 tog Snuggle with along sleeve vest underneath but I am now thinking we need to quickly get a 2 or 2.5 tog if the temp is going to continue to Be low.

Oh I’m sorry to hear about the colic @Zoey92 it’s so hard when they’re so upset isn’t it?

@SRS1311 we have started trying to offer formula every three hours just because we had a few evenings where Grace was suddenly ravenous at bedtime.
But it’s not going well so far, she is all over the place as to when and how much she wants. She can go anywhere from 2.5 -4 hours - yesterday evening she even went 5 hours before finally having a feed before bed.

She had a feed at 8am, tried to offer a feed at 11am but she refused and got upset and did want it till 1pm 🤦🏼‍♀️ And even then she had way less than normal.

No idea how to get her into a evening routine or regular ‘bedtime’ with her feeds still being all over the place. I was hoping by now there would be some more regularity but not yet!

We always offer 180ml (about 6oz) because occasionally she will want this much, but it can vary so much.

She’s 11 weeks and weighs about 12.5lbs, but might be a bit more or less but she hasn’t been weighed in a while.

Magpie21 · 07/09/2020 16:29

@SRS1311 My DD is 10 weeks old today. I feed her 5 oz on demand, which tends to be every 2-3 hours but at least once a day (usually in the evening) she'll need another bottle within the hour. If she isn't hungry she'll reject the bottle. We are going to up this to 6 oz this week. She sleeps through the night now (apart from damn dummy replacements!), which can be 7 hours without a feed.

The huckleberry app has been a major game changer for understanding my LO. I can now so she wasn't sleeping enough throughout the day and by 7pm was having a major witching hour(s) due to over stimulation. I let her nap on/next to me during the day so she can get her sleep quota. Il need to address that soon..!

SRS1311 · 07/09/2020 16:52

@babbafett I take it your little one sleeps through the night now? Sounds like they are getting a fair bit in the day which might then help them to sleep through. I think that's why I'm stressing about feeding as I dont want it to negatively affect the night time

@Blizy aww 10 pounds...so small and cute!

@Gigitree think ours will be similar weights, mine was weighed nearly 3 weeks ago and was 11 pounds 7 and expect hes put on weight since then! It's frustrating not knowing when they will want to feed in terms of planning the day or a routine, I'm really hoping it settles down soon.

@magpie21 I downloaded the huckleberry app but found it a little bit awkward putting his nap times in as sometimes he can doze off and then wake up etc it's hard to know sometimes how long he has been asleep for exactly. But I think I might persevere and give it another go.

With your day time naps - how often would you say your little one naps and how long for? I'd love to have 7 hrs of him sleeping - sounds amazing! I feel like if I dont get the napping / feeding right in the day then this is unlikely to happen Sad

Gigitree · 07/09/2020 17:01

@SRS1311 sounds like our little ones are very similar and we’re in a similar position! I so want to get Grace into more of a routine, but at the moment I just can’t see how and I’m so envious of those that have managed it. It’s making me feel a little bit stupid that I haven’t been able to do it.

babbafett · 07/09/2020 17:44

@SRS1311 yeah he is sleeping through, for the most part and if he wakes it's usually because something woke him up and he wants a cuddle instead of the bottle.
I was nervous that he is being over fed but I'm taking all my cues from him and didn't really have any plans or routine, he just kinda fell into it. I made bigger bottles because he was drinking every last drop of his 6oz ones and taking in lots of air with it. He doesnt always finish the 8oz bottle so I think he is able to stop when full, I try to give him breaks during his bottle to be sure of this but I still worry from time to time.
He is a big chap, DH thinks he will be a rugby player, I'm just thinking we are going to need to purchase a calf to fatten by the time he is on solids,I dont know how we will fill him
