@DustyDoorframes so intrigued about what industry you are in to have that flexibility! It's the dream.

I was made redundant on mat leave with DD and I've been a bit anxious about work as a result. But visited on Thursday, they've restructured but it sounds positive. And are desperate for me to get back. Such a relief, feels like I can relax now. The last 7 months of mat leave with DD was stressful and upsetting.

@Geegrl19 do you get much government support in Australia? Here we have tax free childcare so the govt cover 20%. But there's such variety in the fees. And then 15 to 30 free hours once they are 3. Getting to 3 can feel like an expensive slog!

Geegrl19 · 24/02/2020 11:50

@Stroan yes I think it's better here. You get family tax benefit which is a bit like child benefit (is that the name, can't remember) but it's a lot more than what I remember what you get in the UK. Then we also get child care subsidy. The rate you get depends on what you earn. Full day rate is $120 for daycare and we are out of pocket $30. However, it's balanced at the end of the financial year and so we may have been overpaid so that will come out of our tax return.

Crazy thing here is everyone here by law has to put in a tax return each year. I don't know why it doesn't adjust like in the UK as the year goes by and if I'm paying the right amount of tax then why do I get a return 🤔 confusing 🤣 I won't turn down money though!

DustyDoorframes · 24/02/2020 22:32

@Stroan I'm in the arts, but the magic trick is working as a close group of sort-of-consultants with three other women, all of whom are also only available a couple of days per week. We do the work, cover for each other, really care about what we do and really care about the rest of our lives too. Women who run their own businesses, of whatever sort, do much better at having successful, interesting work after babies (can't remember where I got that from as a statistic though). I know so many women who've been edged out during/after mat leave! It's horrific, it must have been so stressful when it happened to you. Very glad it's different this time! (I'm also secretly very glad that the actual expensive consultant we got in to cover the trickiest part of my work messed up...)

Size 5 aldi leaked within 5 hours

4+ pampers arriving tomorrow

After that my plan is reusable nappy boosters

Dyra · 25/02/2020 09:13

What a huge shame. Sad I guess at least you now have the size 5 for future day use. Doesn't quite make up for the soggy baby in the middle of the night, but even the tiniest silver lining and all that. Hope the Pampers fare much better.

Hoping the sleep is getting better now Geegrl. Slightly envious of the childcare support. I won't complain though. All I need to do is look at the USA and suddenly I'm immensely grateful for everything I do get.

In purely selfish news, Alice finally rolled! We were at a baby group doing some tummy time when suddenly she went front to back. Completely unexpected and accidental (she was trying to chew on a fold of a playmat) but I will take it. There may even have been a few happy tears shed... She also had her first night in her own room last night and licked a piece of cucumber at lunch time. All the firsts!

Geegrl19 · 25/02/2020 11:04

@dyra. Yes, the us have terrible benefits and maternity leave don't they. I am very grateful for all the help we get here.

Sleep is better (don't want to jinx it). Only waking twice a night for a feed but then settling thank goodness. If he doesn't, I just cuddle him. Anything for sleep.

Lol to the licking the cucumber stick and we'll done on the rolling!

Spongeb0b · 26/02/2020 21:44

Hi ladies can I join in? I have a September 2019 baby :) nice to meet you all x

Geegrl19 · 27/02/2020 00:14

Hi @Spongeb0b welcome 😊

Spongeb0b · 27/02/2020 13:32

Thanks @Geegrl19 😊

Megan2018 · 27/02/2020 18:57

Felicity has a temperature and it is creeping up despite Calpol. Started off at 37 and now 38 😭

She’s done 4 poos today which is unusual-feeding loads and lots of wet nappies too.

NHS site says to see GP if 39 or above. She’s a bit quiet and grizzly but still alert etc. I don’t really want to trek in to out of hours if we can avoid it (about 1hr away). But also feel a bit anxious Sad, No rashes or anything weird. DH has a cod so probably that but......

Stroan · 27/02/2020 19:54

@megan2018 you can give ibuprofen too and I often find that better for bringing temps down? If I'm particularly worried, I alternate so that they get something every two hours.

Hopefully just a cold, if she seems ok in herself. Hard not to worry though.

Megan2018 · 27/02/2020 20:41

It went up again so called 111 and they found an out of hours GP for us so waiting to see them now. It is probably ok but I just didn’t feel happy going to bed with her temp rising given we live rurally

Horehound · 27/02/2020 20:45

Aw hope she is ok @megan2018

Horehound · 27/02/2020 21:28

Do any of the Scottish mums in here still have the giraffe soother from the baby box?
Arthur has taking a big liking to it and I think I'm gonna need some back ups for washing or getting lost purposes.
If anyone has one they'd be willing to send me I will send you money or something in return. I'd be ever so grateful!

Stroan · 27/02/2020 22:00

@horehound the yellow fabric one? Send me your address and I'll post it next week.

Geegrl19 · 28/02/2020 00:10

@Megan2018 hope she's ok and a bit more comfortable now poor thing. Nate seems to have permanent sniffles now he's at daycare although don't think teeth are helping.

Jinxed myself re his sleep too. Not a good week!!

Roll on the weekend!

Horehound · 28/02/2020 00:41

Thank you so much @Stroan xx

DustyDoorframes · 28/02/2020 08:49

Hope all was well overnight @Megan2018 !

Spongeb0b · 28/02/2020 10:31

Hope your little one is ok @Megan2018 Flowers

Spongeb0b · 28/02/2020 10:37

My situation is that I've just found a new job and they want me to start in 2 weeks. I've gone from thinking I have another couple of months off with my 6 month old to only having another couple of weeks and I just don't feel ready. He's up a couple of times a night and sometimes - like last night - he won't settle unless he's fed loads. So last night my dh fed him with a bottle of formula to give me a break. He drained 9oz, was still crying and chewing so I went in and boobed him to sleep - took another half hour. Then about 5 hours later, he woke up crying so I breastfed him - after a bit he got really frustrated and was crying so dh had to come in and top him up with a bottle! I just can't seem to fill him and feeding is the only way he will ever go back to sleep. I'm trying my best not to cut back on his milk now he's started on solids. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also if I could have a bit of a handhold about starting new job & leaving him in nursery that will be grand Smile please tell me I will get used to the lack of sleep and manage to learn a new job ok 😭

Spongeb0b · 28/02/2020 10:38

Sorry for lack of paragraphs there!

Megan2018 · 28/02/2020 11:46

We ended up in a right pickle!

When we got to out of hours her temp had increased to 38.5 (3 doses of Calpol in) and she had a rash and weird mottled feet with poor circulation. So Out of Hours referred us to Children’s A&E in Leicester. Fortunately due to the time of night by then we got there in 40 mins.
We saw triage really fast and by then she was up to 39.5 and looked really sad. Even stripped to nappy she was boiling hot. We had to stay until Dr happy with her temp.

She basically has a nasty virus of some sort-her throat is red and so are her inner ears. So we are on max doses or Nurofen and Calpol until she is better.

She is still sad today but nowhere near as bad as last night

Dyra · 28/02/2020 13:33

Oh poor mite @Megan2018. Sad That sounds like a nasty bug and a horrible night for all of you. Hope she recovers extremely quickly and she's back to her normal self soon.

Congratulations on the new job @Spongeb0b. I can't offer anything other than a virtual hand hold. I'm sure it'll work out just fine.

Horehound · 28/02/2020 13:41

Oh @Megan2018 what a wee shame for her. Hopefully she recovers soon. She looks gorgeous though! Hope you get some sleep!

DustyDoorframes · 28/02/2020 14:22

Oh no @Megan2018 what a night! Hopefully she'll be herself again in no tone (and you get a chance for some sleep!!!)
@Spongeb0b congratulations! Childcare scramble... are you going to be working full time? It WILL be fine, if a bit scary! (And frankly, my best advice re sleep... is cosleep, if you can. The less you have to get out of bed the better in my book)
