A new thread for the second half year

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
marmitemad · 07/08/2007 20:38

my epic post to pseudonym took so long to write that you've set up a new thread in the mean time. not sure whether to copy across but probably best not to bore you all again .

we tried some melon today (tried to upload pic but MN keeps crashing on me) and about 60 mins later DD had a horrendous bright green, runny poo (sorry if tmi). Can't believe it was the melon so quickly but I suppose it could have been yesterdays pear and banana. DD is thoroughly enjoying feeding herself and I am quickly learning the optimum size for wedges, oh and I think I converted a Mum onto blw at baby group yesterday .

suis · 07/08/2007 20:46

Ooohh nice new thread... lovely and cosy...you did it out really nice suzi2. I'm sure we'll be happy here.

Pseud... big hugs.. I know what you mean on the biting and scratching front.. and I like suzi2's nursing beads idea... might help us here too. Remember you can always off load here if you feel it helps.

As for us... Sandy has started sitting up pretty well for a few mins at a time... he now has 3 teeth (now I know why they are called nippers! ) and he's reached 20lb. We celebrated by ordering him a bigger Group1 carseat.

Sadly he has also pretty much outgrown his Tummy tub and his carry cot, so it's going to be big bath and big cot by the end of the week.

suzi2 · 07/08/2007 20:57

Suis - just a general thing. If sandy still fits in his old seat weight wise, and his head isn't coming over the top height wise then he's safer in it. Rear facing is the safest way to travel. Especially before they have a lot of control and can sit for a long time. I think that if you recline the group 1 seat that it's safer too... but don't quote me on that! I found my local road safety officer very helpful for advice/fitting with DS.

We tried mash with baked beans today - went down well! Trying broccoli and cauli tomorrow - got small florets and will try him with them as pieces - let him suck on my nectarine today - not sure he took any but enjoyed sucking it!

Sallyallyally · 07/08/2007 22:56

Andyrobo...glad the nectarine was a success. Henry goes crazy when anyone is eating a piece of fruit. Now he has a tooth, he painstakingly 'razors' away at it, hoovers up the juice and is left thoroughly sticky!
Big hugs to all those having a rotten time. Hang in there. This bit is tricky as you get very little time (if any) to yourself. Seem to spend days doing nothing but baby things and occasionally snatching a few mins to empty the dishwasher or some other mind bending chore! However, and here's the good part...it gets lots better...really truely....just takes a bit of time....and at least you can look smug and knowing when those newly pregnant novices say that it won't change their lives!!! Try and be kind to yourselves..you haven't got to be supermum (heaven forbid...bet shes a right pain in the arse!)..just good enough.,..and it sounds to me that you are all doing a sterling job .

suzi2 · 08/08/2007 08:03

I agree it gets much better sallyallyally. I think from 6 months on they're getting more independent, sitting, crawling, cruising, walking, sleeping better, eating and things are more fun and more 'normal'. I can remember things being a ball after DS was 6 months or so. I had pretty much hated everything about my new life up until then!

OP posts:
MoosMa · 08/08/2007 13:27

Sorry to hear some are having a hard time, but I agree, it really does get better very soon! I remember feeling that way after having DD1 and looking back I think I may have had a touch of PND, but this time round it's much much easier and I have felt much better.

On the weaning front, I've given T a few different sticks of things and they've been flatly refused so today I tried her with some baby rice. She hated it! She turned her nose up in a real 'What do you think that is Mother?' face. I got a few tiny spoonfuls in but she looked so p'd off and gagged a bit so I think I'll leave it another week or two then try again.

MoosMa · 08/08/2007 13:28

P.S. cwce, I've got my brother to install zen for me (he's clever with databases etc) and I'm starting to play around with it, I'll let you know how I get on

Sallyallyally · 08/08/2007 14:41

Scary moment this morning. Eating a pice of ripe banana and managed to chew off and inhale a small chunk. Henry looked really alarmed and couldnt get his breath, choking noises etc. Banged him on the back..no luck, tried to hook it out but too far down, suddenly..through general jostling I guess, it moved and he could breath. Whole thing only lasted about 10 to 15 seconds but very, very scarey. Henry a bit quiet and upset for 5 mins after. I was all shakey and tearful! (What a wuss!)Not fun
All fine now...had a nice cup of tea and large piece of chocolate to console myself. (rock and roll!)

suzi2 · 08/08/2007 19:45

eeek sallyallyally. It's so frightening eh? I had a bit of a wobble with DD this evening. She was eating sticks of cooked carrot and they were perhaps a bit on the soft side. But anyway, DS had loaded her tray up with his carrot sticks which were cut much bigger and I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have been. She bit off a windpipe sized/shaped chunk and gagged a lot but couldn't quite spit it out. I panicked a bit... I've done all this before but still panicked! Thankfully it came to the front of her mouth and I hooked it out. She was OK with it all but it was an accident waiting to happen I suppose. Must keep a closer eye on DS! And cut his food to DD sizes just incase!

She devoured the carrot though - loved it! Went nuts every time she dropped it!

We had a scary moment on Mon evening as well, dd was happily tucking into pear wedges but the banana was proving rather slippery so I mashed it up a bit in a bowl (didn't add any milk) and tried to give her some from a spoon at which point she gagged a bit and then started making awful choking sounds, so quickly whipped her out of the bumbo which seemed to dislodge a piece of banana which she spat out, no harm done though apart from I am getting lots of fake coughs now .

Picked up my Tripp Trapp today from Back in Action Amersham to find that it doesn't fit under my dining table with the baby bar on , might have to put the table on some books for a while and dd was horrendous all day with fake coughing and high pitched screeching, sent her to bed early with some Calpol .

marmitemad · 08/08/2007 20:21

and another large glass of wine for me (DH did make a comment)

suzi2 · 08/08/2007 20:36

lol at the fake coughing! DS did it around this age and the Dr was at a loss and was on the point of sending him for x-rays when we discovered it was fake! highly

OP posts:
sorkycake · 08/08/2007 21:12

Ooka fake coughs as he sees boob approaching! I think it might be excitement

Sallyallyally · 09/08/2007 21:49

Just a postscript from my biting message! I now have a graze on my nipple!! Tooth number 2 is coming through and it is obviously comforting to chomp down during a feed..soothes the gums I guess!!!! Wouldn't put up with this from anyone else!!!! (though who else would be likely to bite my nipple is beyond me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

babydriver · 09/08/2007 22:26

Lovely new thread, thanks suzi2.

just looking in to say hi and bye, as we're off our hols tomorrow (2 wks in Denmark.) All doing OK here. DS2 still trying lots of foods, not much going down. Sleep gradually sorting itself out again after his cough/cold - just in time to get thrown again when we're away...

Take care all!

suis · 10/08/2007 00:24

Sympahty for sore nips... I'm having the same with Sandy. He's got two bottom teeth now and I swear he files them to razor sharp points when I'm not looking. I'm dreading when he gets top teeth because then he'll have the ability to actually bite my nips off entirley. Perhaps he thinks the milk will come out faster if he snaps the top off the dispenser.

Suzi2 - thanks the advice on the car seat. His carseat is actually getting passed on to the cousin he is due to have in a few weeks, which is one thing prompting the new seat. Plus, I don't like not being able to see him in the rear facing. He's get a bad habit of falling asleep and having his head roll right ofrward which just looks to me like he can harldy breathe. It makes me v. nervous. When there are no other passengers in the car I put him in the front beside me (car isn't posh enough to have a passenger airbag, so safe that way) just so that I can keep an eye on him.

... and... am I just a big wuss... Sandy is spending his first night in his cot tonight, and over the weekend he will have his last shot in his tummy tub. We've also has to take away his beloved cot mobile now that he's starting to pull himself up. Sandy really doesn't seem to have noticed any difference, but I'm feeling all teary that my wee boy is getting big and leaving behind all these lovely things from his first months.

forgottenfreetime · 10/08/2007 09:08

What a lovely bunch we all are. Been reading the posts and felt really pleased that we can share such tough stuff and give lots of support to each other. That sounds a bit gushy but although I haven't expressed it very well, it is what I thought!
On another note I'm amazed at the babies developments. I guess DD is one of the youngest born March but I think its a really exciting time coming up. At present DD is 21 weeks so we're not weaning yet but she so looks like she wants food. Is making lots of noise at mealtimes, is very hungry for milk and did enjoy the suck at a nectarine I have let her have. She's not really sitting unsupported yet though and I wonder if I should hold off til 26 weeks if poss. I do have food allergies plus the ashthma, hayfever and excema(sp)so had not considered weaning early til recently.
DD definitely needs the cot though. Is far too big for moses basket now. Prob is DS has woken up screaming 3 times at night in a week and don't really want to allow this bad habit to get worse by uprooting him from his cot just at the moment. may search for 2nd hand cot in newspapers today as we have a spare mattress. Can always sell it on I suppose in a few months when DS sleep sorts itsefl out.
Didn't ever have a scary moment with DS weaning but yesterday he chocked for ages on a piece of smoked mackeral of all things! Was very scary. Interestingly DH does first aid course every 3 years for work and just stood there going Look Look Do something! whereas I haven't ever done FA and turned DS upside down and smacked him on the back. (Don't tell me if I've caused him permanent brain damege through doing it wrong)Is DH all over - great when something takes him by suprise (i.e. my first labour) rubbish when prepared for a problem.

curlywurlycremeegg · 10/08/2007 13:38

Oh [jumping up and down emotion] I have uploaded some pics (at last )

peachygirl · 10/08/2007 15:17

Hi all I'm back.
Lovely new thread Just a pop in as I'm supposed to be unpacking everything from our trip.
Will drop by later to write more

MoosMa · 10/08/2007 15:37

cwce, your profile isn't showing, is it something to do with your sly name change?

curlywurlycremeegg · 10/08/2007 15:54

hmm, thats bizzare cos I uploaded them signed in as my sly name change and made them public, will check, thanks

curlywurlycremeegg · 10/08/2007 15:56

silly mistake , should work now!

SmudgeMum · 10/08/2007 15:58

Hi everyone. I'm feeling a bit down about our nights at the moment. I'm still BF Dom but we started on food last week. I'm not expecting anything to have changed yet but he seems to be feeding even more often in the night. He now waked every 2-3 hours through the night and does actually feed. I've tried just shusshhhing (sp?) him but he screams and screams. Please tell me that some of you are still up 4-5 times in the night too and that your LO aren't all sleeping through.
On a more cheerful note, DS wasn't at all impressed with green beans - waved them a bit and then threw them on the floor. Today I thought he might like a carrot ice pop as his teeth were hurting him (ie a carrot stick straight from the freezer) I didn't know a 6 month old could express himself so eloquently - what the heck is that Mam?

SmudgeMum · 10/08/2007 15:58

CWCE, no profile little tab thing is coming up next to your name. I bet the piccies are great though.......
