A new thread for the second half year

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
curlywurlycremeegg · 10/08/2007 16:02

doh, am totally confused now, I am using a mac and safari browser, I don't get a profilr tab next to anyones name, just click on a name to get their profile, oh I am hopeless!

SmudgeMum · 10/08/2007 16:03

Meant to say (lack of sleep affecting mushy brain) FFT given what you said in your post (allergies, not sitting up yet) I reckon if you can hold off a bit on the weaning then might be good. I was told today not to see 26 weeks as the ultimate point, but that babies should be weaned in the middle of the first year ie when it suits the baby so some might be 24 weeks, some might be 30. We gave DS some things that he wouldn't really be eating ie raw carrot stick, cucumber that he liked chomping on. I hope you've all recovered from the mackerel incident!

SmudgeMum · 10/08/2007 16:04

CWCE it worked. The little label thing has appeared next to your name and the pictures are great. I especially like the one of DS "playing" with DD. Do you think he's going to be "joining" in when being bandaged too?

peachygirl · 10/08/2007 16:06

Hi I'm back.
Things Ok here,
A great time at my oarents we wne tot sheffield where we used to live and sat in a pub garden and let aor friends turn up and coo over the baby everyone we emailed came it was brill.
We too are due to be moving DD into the cot bed in her room soon, probably over the weekend. She found the travel cot a bit strange but survived while we were away and we have decided it's best to do the move while I'm on holiday then if I need a nap in the afternoon DH is around.
We also have the fake coughing here too but no teeth yet so no bitten nips. weaning is going slowly, bits of puree and bits of melon ,
sorry your nights have been bad smudgemum

suis · 11/08/2007 23:54

Just want to echo what FFF said... I've very proud of all of us here on Feb07, it's so good to be part of such a supportive community of people. I for one don't know what I would have done without you all.

This is even more pointed to me at the moment as I somehow managed to get myself tangled up in a couple of big squabbles in some other threads (some people even on MN are very touchy about certain subjects apparently, and can be pretty harsh to those who hit the wrong note, even inadvertently... and I was only trying to difuse the nastiness being thrown at someone else!)and it made me appreciate everone in my particular group even more. A quick dip into the Feb07 thread is like coming home to a hot cup of tea and warm slippers. I'll stop being gushy now.

suzi2 · 12/08/2007 21:24

Was just thinking about you Suis! My DH is away on business for a couple of weeks from next weekend and I was thinking I might spend a couple of days or a couple of visits at the inlaws for some help with the kids. Do you fancy meeting up sometime in a couple of weeks time? I can leave DS with them and take DD with me. A Thurs/Fri/Sat perhaps? Who else was it that was in Stirling...?

OP posts:
peachygirl · 12/08/2007 22:04

sorry to hear you got caught up in nastiness suis, MN has been kicking off a lot lately.
you are right though it is always nice to come back to our little gang but I do wonder what happened to some of the other posters, currentbun and her running for example and Dr Jo and her baby with the cleft palate.
DH is doing the bottle.
We start settling in with the CM again tomorrow so if you spot me around mid morning tomorrow tell me to get on with cleaning the bathroom and hoovering!

suis · 13/08/2007 00:10

Hi suzi2 - that sounds great ! Maybe the Thursday or Friday would be best... Perhaps contact me on email and we can set something up. I'm on suisaidhf at hotmail dot com (now you see where I got the nickname from)

The other Stirling people were J9 and Hairy Caterpillar, but neither of them have been on here in ages. I'll have a look on some other threads to see if they've been around.

DontCallMeYummy · 13/08/2007 12:10

Hello Ladies,
I have the internet at home! I can't tell you how brilliant it is not to have to trek down to the local library, DCMMY in tow, for my designated hour - often cut short by DCMMY's failure to adhere to the Rule of Shush. Now I can post in my pjs I never have to get dressed! Just thought I'd add DCMMY's progress report to the pile. I don't have that many mumchums living near me so have thankfully avoided the 'Baby Milestone Competition' that seems to infiltrate many new-mum social groups. As DCMMY is my first I don't have anyone to compare him with but according to everyone else he is- huge, calm, strong, alert, happy and very very cute (but of course...). We're doing the mummy's-milk-only thing til he's 6 months but then we'll be in Germany so will start real food in September - not sure whether to take the puree or BLW path yet so any advice appreciated. He still wakes in the night for food around 2-3 times but as he sleeps next to me it's not too bad, but do babies usually have a huge nappy fill around 2am? Talk about a wake up call... As for movement he is half-rolling over but can quickly wriggle backwards if placed on his front, so the days of leaving him in the middle of the bed with toys as I dash off for a shower are almost over. He loves standing up on his wobbly legs and is happiest in his door bouncer. I nearly bought a Bumbo but heard they grow out of them quickly so will just get the recommended-by-everyone Tripp Trapp. He's very noisy these days, babbling away to himself and also shrieking and bubble-blowing. His giggle is maybe the most wonderful sound in the world and he's still cutely tooth-free but drooling and biting things constantly, including during feeding - ouch. We're starting swimming lessons next month - both of us as I'm not too confident in the water and don't want to suffer the humiliation of having my own son haul his flailing mother out of the shallow end of the local pool. Oh, and he now has his very own passport (complete with ten-chins passport photo) in preparation for our Eurostar trip to Germany next week, coming back the day before the Southbank meet-up so fingers crossed we won't be too train-lagged to come along.
So, that's all our news, basically I just wanted to say - if your baby doesn't sleep through the night - welcome to the club!

peachygirl · 13/08/2007 20:03

DCMY I'll email you my mobile number and make sure you get to know the details of where we are meeting and when

Sallyallyally · 13/08/2007 21:12

Actually, quite glad to hear that others have night problems in a kind of very selfish, thank goodness it's not only me way. Henry still waking up 3 or 4 times a night and will only go back to sleep if I feed him. Also sleeps mainly in our bed. Does anyone have any magical tips...I am far too soft hearted to let him cry and hubby too knackered to help..sooo, I guess answer is tough..you'll have to live with it, but worth asking?!!!

suzi2 · 13/08/2007 22:25

I'm in the "awake several times a night or for several hours at a time" club too. No tips from me. I've tried it all. Promised myself I wouldn't get stressed about it this time around but I'm so horribly knackered. I just hold onto the thought that DS was similar (though not as bad?) and worked it all out.

Sallyallyally · 13/08/2007 22:47

Cheers Suzi2. Yes, this is the second time for me too. Was determined that this one would sleep beautifully all night in cot. I think I have finally managed to pop a couple of pics on profile!

peachygirl · 14/08/2007 14:49

DD wakes really only once at the moment pity that last night this waking lasted 3 hours.... yawn

forgottenfreetime · 14/08/2007 20:17

DD is waking twice a night - at twoish and fiveish. She feeds quickly though, luckily. I am waiting until she is six months (another few weeks) and then I'm afraid I will move her into another room and do a bit of controlled crying or rocking to sleep without feeding - whatever I can stand at the time. I know some people don't think it's right, but it is for me. I need my sleep when I go back to work in Oct and I must confess I want DH back in our bed and not the spare room

andyrobo237 · 14/08/2007 20:40

Sallyallyally - lovely piccies - what a big smile!!

We have progressed to waking at 5 to 6am for a small bottle (3oz but will drop to 2oz tonight). He was on 5oz last week, so I cut it down as he didnt want milk until about 9am. So now with the 3oz he will take 30z at 8ish, along with small amount of cereal. We are now upto 3 mini meals a day - at the same times we eat, whether he is due a bottle or not. And he will take milk from a beaker - gets quite excited by it! Probably as it is hard on his gums! Just a 99p one with Pooh Bear on, but is not a non spill one, so the milk just spills out. He has most of his bottle then the last ounce or so in the beaker!

Rolling all over the place and managing to sit for 2 - 10 seconds unaided - keep trying - big head doesnt help though!

Hope everyone is ok - weather turned bad again!

yelnats · 14/08/2007 20:50

Hi everyone - I feel really guilty posting on here as I dont post much on the post natal thread. I dont have time to read through all the posts so I only tend to post on Active Convos lately. I will try to make an effort to catch up and post on here though - I promise.

Sophie is doing great - she will be 26 weeks on Thursday - cant believe how quickly it has gone.

She has been sitting up unaided for the past 4 weeks or so, got much steadier the past fortnight and sitting for long periods without toppling over - though has started to try and reach out for things that interest her which will probably result in a few topples. Today we moved onto 3 meals per day - started weaning about 5 weeks ago as we simply could not manage on breastmilk alone any longer. She seems to love everything we have given her so far - which is mainly fruit, veg and the odd rusk.

We were co-sleeping but I am due back at work in just elss than 3 weeks so decided it was time to put her in her cot in her own room (well with dd1). She is doing pretty good - I have managed to cut the through the night feed but we do have to get up to her a couple of tijmes to give her her dummy but she usually settles within a few minutes (hope I havent just jinxed myself!). I really thought it was going to be a nightmare moving her from our bed to her cotbed but we have been really lucky so far.

My current issue is weaning from breast to bottle - I am going back to work on 3Sept and really worrying as she wont take a bottle to allow me to stop feeding in time for going back to work. Any tips appreciated.

hope everyone is doing well and enjoying their LO's. I will try and keep up with this thread now and post regularly.

marmitemad · 14/08/2007 21:32

Great pics Sallyallyally and cwce. I love looking at other peoples babies.

blw has stalled a bit here with not much interest over the past few days. HV advised yesterday that we should be moving towards 3 meals/day by 9 months but was happy for me to do it my own way so we tried some buttered toast this morning which was a huge success (pic on my profile). dd spurned the carrot sticks and green beans at lunchtime and was absolutely horrified by the pureed sweet potato & squash at tea time.

She has been a bit out of sorts today though, had me up at 5am and wouldn't go back to sleep for over an hour. I know I shouldn't moan but it's tough when you're not used to it and I had a bad reaction to a dental injection yesterday and have felt really wobbly and ill since.

SmudgeMum · 14/08/2007 21:55

Hi everyone. Lovely to see the photos. Don't they all look sooo cute! Nice to hear that we're not alone with our night wakings. I think I was feeling a bit sorry for myself as most of the girls I meet up with have babies that sleep through Food is still going down a treat but we are not doing BLW properly as Dom likes stuff off a spoon too. Saying that, he enjoyed stuffing in fish with sweet potato, spinach and peas today. He certainly seems a lot more settled since we started on solids (about 2 weeks now) but I'm finding it hard to fit in meals as well as milk and not have them too close to each other. I'm surprised he didn't pop tonight. Velnat I'm really enjoying giving him lots of different flavours for him to help himself to. I'm also enjoying the fact that I know he's getting calories from milk so there is absolutely no pressure on the solid side. The mess is pretty horrendous though - we bought a 89p shower curtain from ikea to put under his chair. I'm wondering about investing in a few more to drape round the walls too! Sleep well little ones so Mummies can too.

MoosMa · 14/08/2007 22:59

Not a lot of news here, still no weaning although her appetite is picking up again so she may start getting interested in food one day. She's still a good sleeper (sorry!) but hasn't figured out rolling again. Not sitting up although her back does look straighter today I noticed.

Marmitemad, you asked about a lower dose of Amytriptiline (sp?), well I asked my GP who gave me the liquid version as 10mg is the lowest tablet dose. With the liquid I can take 1ml which is 5mg. It tastes absolutely foul and makes my mouth go numb but it's much better side-effects-wise! I'm waiting to see if it works, I'll report back in a few days.

And some good news too, DD1 is in the throes of potty training and is doing remarkably well - hoorah!

Sallyallyally · 15/08/2007 11:28

Looks like the toast is a hit marmitemad.
I don't think there is a right or wrong with the sleep thing..... it all works out in the end. DD1 was co sleeping for quite a long time, but eventually went into her own bed in own room without a murmer (and she's a strong willed madam!). Not quite so patient this time because I'm older and falling to pieces, so will summon up some energy and think of a cunning plan. Even if he does half in cot and half in bed that would be fine!
Food is a big hit. Goes crazy if he sees you eating and isn't offered some...ditto drinking, but have drawn the line at martini and tonic! (showing my Essex roots!)
Can skirmish across floor now, and gets into crawling position for a few seconds, looks very surprised and then collapses!
Haven't got any breast to bottle tips I'm afraid. DD went from breast to cup easily so could try that if bottles are rejected?
Can I just say that sounds like everyone doing so, so well. Really proud of you all (and proud of me too!!!)

Sallyallyally · 15/08/2007 11:30

Moosma...wayhey on potty training. I remember my handbag always contained phone, purse and spare pair of pants! I could locate all the toilets in Coventry city centre blindfolded!!!

forgottenfreetime · 15/08/2007 15:25

So of the potty training moosma. After auspicious signs ds is reblling against any mere mentions of the potty and cries if I say 'Pants?' And his nappies are just disgusting now....

peachygirl · 15/08/2007 21:57

Hi all.
DD is sitting a little bit for a few minutes at a time. I don't think she has 'clicked' as to the benefits of sitting - reaching out to things etc and she is still wobbling lots but I am really proud of her. she ate really well today too, pureed apple and sweet potato (not at the same time) and attempted some rice cake which she seeme to really enjoy. She had 3 but probably ate 3/4 of one.
We have bought a fancy glider chair for DDs room - I've been sitting in a deck chair I'm so looking forward to the night feeds when it comes. It was a cheapo one from ebaby and we have it in the same colour as the sofa so I can be taken in to the living room at a later date.

Don't know if anyone lurks on her threads but we should all raise a glass or a cup of tea to Misdee and her family tonight what great news

suis · 15/08/2007 22:52

I've had such a good day today....

My brave and lovely DP looked after the baby today while I went out for the day. Brave and lovely because DS has been refusing to take a bottle and came down with his first ever cold last night.

So while I left him with an ill child that wouldn't drink milk, I went uptown with my sister, had my hair cut, went shopping and enjoyed a leisurely lunch. I have to say I was really really in need of a wee bit of time off and I feel like a whole new person after my day off. I didn't phone home all day because I knew that if I heard DS crying I wouldn;t be able to enjoy my day and would have had to rush back. As it turned out, DP did a fabulous job... I got back to a very happy baby who had been persuaded to take some bottled milk afterall, as well as having his purees and fingerfoods.

Plus my sister treated me to my hair cut and lunch !

All in all a very good day !
