Oh goodness haha don't know how anyone thinking of another baby yet ! Well too soon to ask me that question hahaha

melissa112 · 16/06/2019 09:14

@cardboard33 ha thanks for the hello to the sun post 🤣 thanks for the encouragement with the swimming!

@Sheeni oh i really feel for you. If you say he now cries at the darkened room could you leave a night lamp on when you take him up? One maybe which has different brightness settings and gradually reduce it? We have a gro egg 2 which has a dim nightlight effect and 3 brightness levels and a gro light bulb which has a sort of weird bluey hue which we use for changing bums in the middle of the night or when we bring him to bed. Not sure if it would help but thought I'd suggest it just incase. The sleeping in the cot in the day is good progress though and hopefully if you can get him to do that more (easier said than done i know, coming from someone who can't get their baby in their basket in the day) he may start getting better in the evening. Is there anyone who can look after baby for a few hours while you get a nap during the week?

@shiny888 do you have a sling for yours? We don't and i still debate whether to buy one but now we've turned a slight corner (or small bend in the road) with getting him down for a nap I'm not sure whether to or not. I still can't get much done in the day and rely on grabbing rubbish to eat.

@Sictransitgloria haha i do have some kind of second baby thoughts. I hope that

we could start trying when LO is 2 but by the time he's a toddler i may change my mind 😉

Can anyone reassure me that this is normal and nothing to worry about? My dad saw LO yesterday, hasn't seen him properly for weeks and made a comment that worried me, mainly because I've noticed it myself...

If i sit George on my knee facing me he will look anywhere but my face. He does it with DP and with my dad, in fact anyone. Is the lack of eye contact in that situation a concern? If he's in his bouncer he will play with his toys happily while I'm busy but if i come and sit by him he's all eye contact, chatting, big smiles, giggles. Same if i lie him on the bed in front of me. If DP has him on his knee he won't give much eye contact to him but will give loads to me when I'm sat next to them and loads of smiles. And vice versa. If i have him on my knee he will barely look at me but looks at DP and gives him eye contact and smiles. The only time he'll properly look at me on my knee is if i sit up, bend my legs and kind of lie him propped up in an almost sitting position. Then he'll be ok with eye contact. He gives eye contact from the pram too. No issues with avoiding gazes with strangers from the pram or me carrying him etc. Does this sound ok? Is there anything to be concerned about with the no eye contact/wont look at me from on my knee?

HidCat · 16/06/2019 16:33

Hi everyone, I hope you're all doing ok! Just trying to catch up on everyone but I've been a bit MIA. Things are going ok, started attending some local groups and thinking of going swimming now though not to a set class.

@melissa112 I wouldn't worry about George's eye contact yet. Most babies start making eye contact by the three month mark but I don't think it's anything to worry about yet. Keep an eye on it and speak to your health visitor if you're still worried.

Angelmiracle · 16/06/2019 17:03

@melissa112 it must be normal DD does the same unless I tip her back a bit from me. Maybe to do with head control too?? They might be able to ask that improves. The fact he is making eye contact in other positions doesn't sound like a cause for concern.

DD is 11 weeks tomorrow and we're going to Majorca. I hope she finds it ok!

OP posts:
melissa112 · 16/06/2019 17:18

Thanks @Hidcat and @Angelmiracle. He definitely gives loads of eye contact in all other positions/places other than just sat on my knee which is why I've found it so odd but hopefully normal then. His head control is really good, he can sit on his own on my knee for some time (with my hands hovering behind and in front just in case) so can't blame it on that unfortunately. He seems much more interested in nosying around when on my knee but like your LO @Angelmiracle he'll give loads of eye contact when tipped back. He's 14 weeks tomorrow. Maybe I'm being an overcautious FTM. I guess I'm trying to convince myself that if he seeks out eye contact from his chair, play mat, pram and when tipped back etc then thats ok? I'll definitely take the advice to speak to the HV if I'm still concerned. She's booked in a 4 month visit about weaning so I'll check then. Thanks both Smile

How are you finding it all @HidCat? Are you enjoying the groups?

@Angelmiracle wow, hope you all have an amazing time in Majorca. How long are you away for?

melissa112 · 16/06/2019 17:19

Not sure why it keeps putting asteriks next to your name @Angelmiracle

Angelmiracle · 16/06/2019 18:04

Haha that's strange! We're going for 1 week @melissa112 we normally go away longer but don't want to overdo it with DD.

Packing all done now we just need an extra person to help us carry all the luggage Grin

OP posts:
HidCat · 16/06/2019 20:23

@melissa112 I have been enjoying the groups, it's a shame they finish at the end of the school term but I probably couldn't take my 6 year old anyway! I've been to one which is free play and more of a social thing and a Welsh language baby massage / singing session. I don't speak Welsh really but figure it'd be beneficial for the baby.

Sheeni · 16/06/2019 20:48

@melissa112 I don't think it's the darkness. We have a little night lamp on and it's not really pitch black anyway.

I think (or more like hope) he's still going through the development leap and that's why he's being so awful. He's been on the boob most of the weekend. My poor nipple (he still doesn't do bottle Angry).

Those of you who went through the 12-week leap already - how did you know if was over? How long did it take?

cardboard33 · 16/06/2019 21:02

@shiny888 yes, I need to get more organised with a wrap around towel for him. I took a dressing gown for me this week but didn't actually get around to putting it on. Where did you get yours for baby from? We don't have a car (although do have a car seat) so I have to just shove him in the pram and walk out the door with him screaming Grin

@Sictransitgloria we've had to have this discussion recently to decide on next steps
in relation to my health and it feels very premature given we know we can't begin trying for another baby until this one is 3. But we were lucky enough to squeeze this one into the planning which a lot of people in my position don't get a chance to do so we can't complain.

I was thinking the other day that it must be around this time last year that some of the earliest due dates found out they were expecting. We didn't find out until mid July but my due date was the end of March (despite ending up with one of the oldest babies...) so other people must have been about a month ahead of us. So weird to think that there will soon be a March 2020 thread, if there isn't already.

WhatALearningCurve · 16/06/2019 21:42

@Angelmiracle I've just got off a 10 hour flight to Mexico. Honestly I highly recommend flying with babies this age. It was so easy and baby mainly just slept. If he got a bit fussy I just went to the galley at the back over the engines and he seemed to love that.

Do you breast or formula feed? If you formula feed the pick it all up from boots at the airport after security. You need to pre order it but makes your luggage allowance more achievable ha

kee80 · 17/06/2019 07:16

@Sheeni I think my little one had a leap at 11wks. She was really fussy and just slept constantly through the day. It lasted about a week. I could tell it was over as she stopped sleeping lots in the day and she seemed to be more happier.

I've been for about 5 days with a viral infection, I've felt rubbish and been worried about little one catching it.
Yesterday she was so cranky and fussy, was crying quite a lot which is unlike her. I'm not sure if she's starting with the virus or was just having a bad day. Obviously she can't tell me how she's feeling so I was thinking if she's the same today should I give her calpol every 4 hours see how she is?
It's so hard when your not sure if baby is ill or not

melissa112 · 17/06/2019 17:57

@Angelmiracle have a lovely time in Majorca!

@HidCat oh the classes sound good! It is a shame they end during the summer, i didn't realise so will need to find something else i think!

@Sheeni our leap sounds the same as @kee80. Think he was around 11 weeks too and was sleeping so much. Sometimes he'd just wake for bottles and this lasted about a week. After that he was more alert and had suddenly learned some new things.

@cardboard33 yeh i think i found out i was pregnant at the very beginning of July so youre probably right, it seems so long ago now, can't believe how different life is since then.

@kee80 sorry to hear you haven't been well, how is LO now? Im not too sure on the calpol question sorry. Has she got a temperature?

Ok so i have a probably stupid question but would like to know what you ladies would do. So on our walk today a fly (the ones that look like they go on poo kind) landed on LOs spiral pram toy. I wafted it away but now wondering if i need to wash it or wipe it and whether its even safe to wipe it with some anti bac wipes? He puts it in his mouth which is why I'm worrying slightly about what to do. Would you ladies clean/wipe it or not bother?

kee80 · 17/06/2019 18:51

@melissa112 she seems ok today no temp so just see how she goes. Hopefully she might not get it.

With regards to the fly if I'd have seen it land on something my little one plays with or puts in her mouth I would more than likely wipe it with whatever wipes I had on me at the time. I'm sure it will be fine though, I reckon flies land on loads of things and we don't see it

WhatALearningCurve · 17/06/2019 20:03

@melissa112 I can highly recommend this whilst you're out and about

www.amazon.co.uk/Vital-Baby-500ml-Aquaint-Sanitising/dp/B00GPQDZ1O

We're using it on holiday and it's a life saver

Sheeni · 18/06/2019 05:04

@melissa112 Well, I should have known my LO will be different. He's never been a good sleeper so don't know why I hoped anything will be different during a leap. He was just more tired and unhappy because of it.
Fingers crossed we're out of the worst now, but have the second set of vaccinations today, so I will never know.

I second @whatalearningcurve suggestion. We have that same spray and it's been a lifesaver, considering how often my LO spits out his dummy. He doesn't put anything in his mouth yet (apart from his or our hands), but I'm sure it will come handy once he does, too.

Sheeni · 18/06/2019 05:07

@melissa112 Btw it's £3.19 in Boots as well at the moment.

cardboard33 · 18/06/2019 06:32

@melissa112 I probs wouldn't bother doing anything in the situation that you've described as I think fly's will get everywhere without us seeing so he needs to build up immunity to fly poo! Grin that's not to say we don't clean things as we certainly do more with his things than we do for our own, but by the same token I don't go around disinfecting everything as I don't think that's a true reflection of the world.

That said, I may invest in some of the spray stuff... Does anyone use it/can it be used for sterilising breast pumps? Could be useful when we are away and without access to the steriliser... We were just going to use boiled water and do it old school but this would be far handier.

melissa112 · 18/06/2019 11:54

Thanks @WhatALearningCurve for the recommendation for the anti bac spray, I'm definitely ordering some of that! Hope you're having a lovely holiday!

In what situations do you all change dummies for a newly sterilised one? If it fell on the floor (inside and out) I would change, what about if it falls teat down on the sofa? Is this where you would use the spray or not? My DP thinks I'm overthinking it as LO puts everything in his mouth now but I'd like to know what others do?

I did wipe the toy the fly landed on with a baby wipe as thats all i had. I guess i have some anxiety around germs but just want to recognise what is just me and my anxiety or when there is a genuine need to wash/sterilise that others would consider sensible too.

@kee80 glad your LO seems to have avoided getting ill Smile

@Sheeni not sure this will make you feel better but this second set of vaccinations didn't seem to effect LO at all. The first set he had horrible explosive poos for over a week. We had the 2nd lot last week and theres been no change in him at all. I know each LO is different but hoping yours go well today. And thanks for the tip about Boots, will get OH to pick some up!

@cardboard33 yeh i guess you're right about flies landing when we don't notice. I did notice a spider hanging round near his changing mat etc and instinct was to get it away from his stuff. Then realised how silly i was because they are probably everywhere and crawl over all sorts when I'm not looking!

WhatALearningCurve · 18/06/2019 12:14

@melissa112 not sure how correct it is but but I wouldn't change the dummy if it was my sofa or my mums etc. I would change it if it was my MIL's because she has a dog and cats.

@CaseofEllen you can use it for EVERYTHING. Honestly. It's amazing. I wouldn't use it back home in place of the steriliser but for holiday and out and about it's been game changing

@Angelmiracle FYI - I've also been using the sterilising spray to cool baby down because it comes out as a mist and they do it in a travel size as well so you can take it on the plane / stick it in your handbag

Sheeni · 18/06/2019 13:47

@melissa112 My LO spits the dummy all the time and only if it ends up on the floor + once a week I put it through the steriliser. But I might be in minority, tbh. We use the spray otherwise and I'm ok with his immune system handling 1% of the germs. I rinse it under water and then spray and we're ready to go. Otherwise I'd have to have dozens of dummies.

shiny888 · 18/06/2019 16:35

@melissa112 I don't have a sling but I have a baby wrap and a baby carrier but by the time I've gotten her into it she's kicked up such a fuss I have to get her out again so I don't like using them .
My LO does the same with the eye contact thing so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

@HidCat Iv just seen you've been going to a Welsh sing massage session, just out of curiosity where abouts are you based? As I attend a welsh story, sign and song and wanted to join the massage class but it was full. I wonder if we are in the same county .

@Sheeni what bottle are you using? We have tried 4 and the only one LO would take was a MAM bottle and she will not take it if I'm in the room and she can smell me she cries but if I leave the room she'll take it.
I hope you're nipples get a rest soon I know the pain!

@cardboard33 I got a hooded towel for her from primark it was only like £4 but I want to get one of those towels that are like a poncho if you know what I mean?
Yeah that is mad to think this time last year some of us were finding out we were expecting

@kee80 I hope you feel better soon and LO isn't coming down with it. Must be so hard to look after LO when your not well your self

melissa112 · 19/06/2019 10:48

@WhatALearningCurve and @Sheeni thanks for the dummy advice. I won't worry too much about the sofa then.

@shiny888 my LO fusses with the carrier too so we've given up for now. I might try again when he can face out or try a different one.

I've had a nightmare couple of days with LO and typing this in tears. He is starting to massively fight naps to the point he is hysterical. I can see him start to get tired and try to get him to sleep on me. He used to cry and squirm but nothing that some shushing and bum patting wouldnt solve. Now he is scratching me everywhere, screaming this loud tearless (at first) cry, pulling my hair and clothes and squirming like crazy. Standing up worked last night but doesn't today. He's been bringing up more milk today and yesterday too but that doesn't seem to be bothering him. Tried standing up with him over my shoulder which is my go to and he even cried then.

I wondered whether he wasn't actually tired (he'd only been awake half an hour as he'd napped in his pram on our walk, even though he showed signs of it. So i popped him in his bouncer and all hell broke loose. Finally decided to feed him even though he normally goes 4 hrs and it had only been 2.5 and he drank it all and is now half asleep on me. Last night for the first time he wouldnt sleep in his moses basket for bed downstairs. He just lay there awake but not crying.

I honestly felt a small panicky thought of 'i cant cope with this' when it had been going on. I feel better now he's calm.

He's ok in himself when not tired, cheerful, playing and smiling and no temperature so don't think he's under the weather. Wee and poo ok.

Any ideas? He was 14 weeks on Monday. I read there's the 4th development leap 14 and a half weeks after due date which would be this coming Sunday/Monday. Could it be this that has come early? A growth spurt? I've never felt so upset and i will admit here that i felt a small rush of frustration and now feel awful SadSad

melissa112 · 19/06/2019 10:49

Also, we have a Jo Jingles class later today. Even though he was like this yesterday with the nap fighting he did go to baby massage and was happy all the way through, smiling etc and not crying. Wondering whether to go to this other class today,he'll just be sat on my knee watching, or whether to give it a miss.

melissa112 · 19/06/2019 12:55

My little bundle of joy is finally asleep in his basket. He's been asleep ages on me but didn't dare move!! Never has a brew been more needed! And here was me about to post about how he'd fallen asleep for the first time in his pram today and how lovely our first hour long walk was 🤣
