@Lookingforadvice123 - Emma is and has been for a while, but my son didn't for ages and he never stops talking now! I'd try not worry too much about when they 'should' be doing stuff as they're all different. You'll know more than anyone if something isn't right etc x

Celebelly · 02/09/2019 12:33

My Emma only just started consonants like three days ago. Mainly babababa and yayayaya!

Yakadee · 02/09/2019 14:38

It's adorable. I can't believe how fast it's going already! X

lanalawr · 02/09/2019 16:43

No babbling here. Dd didn't until 9 months (mamamamama). Ds is currently perfecting his raspberry blowing instead. He's constantly soaking!

lookingforadvice123 · 03/09/2019 21:20

Thanks all. I know I shouldn't worry and I thought I would be more relaxed with DC2! I know DS was definitely 8 months before any consonants were clear, although he was always very vocal and blew raspberries etc too. DS2 doesn't do this but just the last couple of days he's already a bit more vocal, I think because his first two teeth have cut so he's moaning less! He's only just turned 6 months last week.

He's also slept through for the last 3 nights again, fingers crossed it carries on!

Yakadee · 04/09/2019 22:35

I've been having a rough time on the sleep front, but from my 3yo! It's been windy / rainy here so he's decided that he doesn't like his bedroom anymore and that it's scary (bloody wind!). Haven't heard a peep yet so everything is crossed! 🤞

Reuben is six months and a few days now, and is refusing purées... so we’ve been going down the BLW route.

However, I’m not confident at it... any ideas of first foods to give him and the sizes?

He loves banana but it just slips out of his hands! He also loves strawberries but I worry they’re too small when cut up, and obviously too choke-able when whole!
I’ve got carrot batons and broccoli florets to steam for him, and he loves rusks and those baby wotsit things...

What else, and how should I prep it?

No advice, but Reuben is very cute!

mummymummymummummum · 06/09/2019 19:53

The first part of BLW is allowing them to play and experiment with textures. You'll be surprised how quickly he'll figure out how to hold slippery things!

I try to include some things that have a 'handle' so a part that will fit in her fist and something sticking out of the top. Broccoli and cauliflower are great. Baby corn. Other veg cut into sticks. So when cooking our tea I may just cut some things differently for A. Otherwise it's just the same as us. She practices picking up smaller bits.

So tonight we had samosas (I gave her one side of the triangle), chickpea curry (some long bits of onion and mushrooms for A), and naan bread (a length of that too). She's been weaning 2 weeks today.

So, just normal meals but with a little thought about sizes.

Don't expect him to be eating lots. In fact another BLW thing is that you don't worry AT ALL about what they're actually eating! This early stage is all about learning the skills. Picking up food, getting it into their mouth, chewing, moving food around the mouth, swallowing.

IncyWincy23 · 06/09/2019 19:53

@NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking he’s gorgeous! The health visitor said to me to just give him what we’re having to eat. Toast always goes down a treat and I’ve been putting mashed avocado on it too. Pasta is a pretty easy one because that doesn’t need cutting or anything. Sweet potato wedge batons are easy for them to get hold of too and soft when steamed and then baked.

To be honest most of it just gets mushed onto the highchair tray or ends up being sat on!

The HV also said sizes of the foods should be so they can hold it with a little sticking out the top for them to bite on and told me to look on these two websites which have been really helpful!

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/solid-foods-weaning/

www.nhs.uk/start4life/weaning/

I was so worried about BLW but she told me to stop thinking about it so much, and that actually helped me!

Good luck!

lanalawr · 07/09/2019 11:31

It's a case of give anything a go with blw. Porridge fingers or thick porridge which they'll pick up in their fists. Whole strawberries should be fine. They can hold the green bit and suck/gum on the strawberry.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 09/09/2019 13:43

Thank you all! Will read up on those websites 😊

I’m so worried about him bunging a whole strawberry in! He’s so greedy with them 😬🙈

detachablehoof · 09/09/2019 22:05

I had the sleep consultant visit a couple of weeks ago! We now have a fairly strict schedule to stick to, which I found quite hard work at first. We also have a gentle sleep training plan (basically not to get her out of her cot, but go sit / stroke / sing to her when she's crying). We've had some better nights and then had some awful nights.... and then last night she slept for 11 hours 😯 had a bottle and then I had to wake her up an hour later! Hoping she's getting the hang of it all...

We've stopped using the monitor, so we only hear her if she's actually crying (if she's just grumbling it doesn't wake me up). I think I was going to her far too quick before - and probably disturbing her sleep.

So hopeful we've got it cracked. (not had any leaps or teething since we started though!)

I have huge anxiety about teething - not really any signs of it yet but I'm terrified it's going to throw me back into the depths of PND when it comes 😢 hopefully it's not as awful as everyone says, and she will be one of these lucky kids that has teeth appear with zero fuss!

Hey all! This thread has been quiet for a long time but with the babies first Christmas' approaching I just thought I'd check in and say hi to everyone. Not sure if the Facebook page is still active as I never joined it! Hopefully some of you will still see this!

For us Max is doing great: he's a ball of crawling climbing energy and I can't take my eyes off him for a second! Hes still massive weighing the Sami as an average 2 year old (Confused) He's eating well and finally sleeping after a nightmare few months. Naps are a whole other story though! I've started my career break and really enjoying being at home with my two boys. I'm sure the novelty will start to wear off though!! Would love to hear how the rest of you are getting on

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 12/12/2019 23:27

Hi! I didn’t join the Facebook page either...

All good here though, Reuben is now just over 9 months, and I’ve no idea what he weighs but he’s in 12-18 month clothes now.

I’ve been back at work for nearly three months now, and it has saved my sanity! Post natal depression got me again, but my tablets are just about levelling me out 🤞🏼

Not at all ready for Xmas... I still have builders in converting the loft, so everything is disrupted and dusty, the end is in sight though... 🙌🏼

Hope you have a very merry Christmas! 🎄 🎅

Notquiteagandt · 14/12/2019 15:32

Aww Max still has his fabulous hair I see 😍

M is 10.5m now and took her tentitive 1st steps the other day. Albeit wobbley and flat on her bum seconds later. She is very much a climber though. Already able to get out her cot 🤣 shes a daredevil. Need about 4 extra sets of eyes on her. Shes having a huge growth spurt gone from off the chart to just above 25th percentile in about 8wks i dont seem to be able to fill her up. Shes a little piglet.

Lovely to hear others thriving and doing well too.

And @NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking
Glad to hear you are feeling better now. My anixity disapeared but it raring its head again a little bit. As I can feel hormones creeping up again now baby is bf less in the day.

Im so excited for 1st christmas. Just enjoying being busy with lots of festive fun. That and iminant 1st birthday plans are keeping me busy and something to focus on.

maxiflump1 · 14/12/2019 22:40

Lovely to hear from you both and to hear that your little ones are thriving. Max is way over the 99.6th centile line but health visitor has been quite chilled about it all.

@NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking sorry to hear you suffered from PND again but sounds like you are doing great. Hope the building work finishes in time for Xmas

@Notquiteagandt well done for bf this long. That's quite an achievement. And walking already: wow! Glad to hear that you are doing ok and that M is doing well.

bubblybrit · 15/12/2019 13:58

Hello 👋 So glad to hear that all the babies are doing well!

We had Anna’s first christmas party yesterday. She absolutely loved it and looked adorable (even if I say so myself) in her Santa outfit 😀

She is 10 months now so we are having fun with weaning although I must admit that I’m struggling to come up with new meal ideas now that she is eating a bit more. Does anyone know of any good websites/books where I could get some ideas? I’ve had a look online but some of the recipes seem a bit advanced for her....she has taken to weaning quite slowly and I still really need to mash things up for her!

Can’t believe that M is walking already. Thats amazing! A is still trying to crawl. She hasn’t worked out that she needs to push up with her arms yet!

maxiflump1 · 18/12/2019 21:51

@bubblybrit re weaning Max pretty much eats whatever we do so spag Bol, risotto, salmon and potatoes, roast dinners etc. We just mush it up a bit! For lunch we do more of BLW and today he had some wrap, chicken breast, boiled eggs and banana.

If we are going out I make little cheese and veg muffins. Really easy: just boil up some carrots, peas and broccoli and mix in with 6 eggs and a handful of cheese. Pour into muffin tins and bake for 15 mins. He loves them and they are freezable.

bubblybrit · 19/12/2019 10:03

Thanks @maxiflump1. I think I’m still worried that she chokes so scared to try different things! She was pretty slow to get the hang of chewing so we were stuck on purées for a long time. She is clearly able to chew now as loves baked potato and cheese, spag bol, mild chilli & rice etc but I’m still a little frightened to try new recipes. Which is more my fear than DDs!

Notquiteagandt · 19/12/2019 10:42

@bubblybrit

My DD had really severe reflux and loads chocking episodes so weaning scared me. I did a first aid course and it helped my confidence with weaning no end. Really reccomend doing one to put yourself at ease more.

bubblybrit · 19/12/2019 15:07

That sounds like a good idea if you think it helped @ Notquiteagandt. Did you just look online for courses or was your health visitor/GP etc able to offer you a place?

I hate when she gags as it freaks me out when her eyes water and she is coughing in order to bring the food back up. Really want to get over the fear as I know she should be trying more textures/recipes by now!

bubblybrit · 19/12/2019 15:08

Aargh didn’t tag you properly @Notquiteagandt

detachablehoof · 19/12/2019 22:23

So nice to hear from some familiar names!

My little girl (ten months) is doing well - got a few teeth now and almost walking!

I find feeding her tricky - started weaning early as I was desperate for her to sleep better. Now she won't take purees etc and will only have finger food - and pretty much only eats cheese and fruit 🙄

Notquiteagandt · 20/12/2019 03:25

@bubblybrit there are a few companys locally that do them so I just looked which one fitted best time wise. But little first aid do them by us. It is a franchise I think so maybe some local to you. Gagging is good. It means pushing food out. Red and loud and making a sound I tend to just watch maybe say come on cough and leave her too it. Maybe offer a little water.

@detachablehoof we weaned a couple days short of 7m and another cheese and fruit fiend here. She had bit of puree for about 3wks along side finger food. Before getting annoyed me feeding her. So we went to BLW fully. So I dont think its anything to do with early weaning. Think they just know what they want. Do you look at the wonderweeks? Leap 7 (which we are thankfully just coming out of 🤞🏻) one of the "signs" is fussiness and going off food.
Certainly true for us. Shes gone from being a total piglet and unable to fill up. To grazing and just wanting fruit & carbs.
