Just been doing some research and came across this:
WHOOPING COUGH - cannot remember whos LO has it (sorry) but read this:
Lactuca virosa
Common names: Wild Lettuce, Lettuce Opium, Bitter Lettuce.
Part used: Leaf.
Organically grown in Croatia. Tincture produced in the UK using organic grain alcohol.
An infused tincture of leaves, 1:4 25% alcohol.
Suggested dose: take one or two teaspoons, in a little hot/cold water, as required.
Caution: If you are taking pharmaceutical medicines, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not take herbal medicines without first consulting a health professional.
Information:
The whole plant is rich in a milky sap that flows freely from any wounds. This hardens and dries when in contact with the air. The sap contains 'lactucarium', which is used in medicine for its anodyne, antispasmodic, digestive, diuretic, hypnotic, narcotic and sedative properties. Lactucarium has the effects of a feeble opium, but without its tendency to cause digestive upsets, nor is it addictive. It is taken internally in the treatment of insomnia, anxiety, neuroses, hyperactivity in children, dry coughs, whooping cough, rheumatic pain etc.
Wild Lettuce is a valuable remedy for use in insomnia, restlessness and excitability (especially in children) and other manifestations of an over active nervous system. As an anti-spasmodic it can be used as part of a holistic treatment of whooping cough and dry irritated coughs in general. It will relieve colic pains in the intestines and uterus and so may be used in dysmenorrhea. It will ease muscular pains related to rheumatism. It has been used as an anaphrodisiac.
Combinations : For irritable coughs it may be used with Wild Cherry Bark. For insomnia it combines with Valerian and Pasque Flower. For over activity in children it combines well with California Poppy.
