Not sure if a thread exists already. If so, point me in the right direction.
Here's a place to celebrate our bundles of joy and find support for everything from stitches to breastfeeding, partners and sleep and anything else we may come across in the early days to challenge us!

Just catching up on our thread, I forget it's here and then when I come on I've missed everything!
So...
Hello lovely new mummies🌸

@SnowBambino Greenman was fab, baby slept through the night for the first time ever and in fact slept through each night we camped there. Things have returned to normal now we are home though so we are up lots in the night!

How are all these poorly babies doing, I guess we are coming into the season of colds and coughs now.

And lastly good luck to the work returners. Let us know how you get on.

Oh and really lastly can I just recommend celeriac and pear as a yummy purée that I made yesterday. We are mainly doing old school purée instead of BLW and this purée was well received. Maybe we could share our food success so we can all try it?

avocadoincident · 01/09/2018 07:18

@ChampooPapi I was just referring to your list of things babies shouldn't eat before 6 months. Are they all on there due to possible allergen connections? I was wondering about the seeds really.

Smurf123 · 01/09/2018 07:48

Carrot and sweet potato went down well here!
Apple and kiwi puree not so much!!!!
Ds chews everything he can get his hand on.... Except the sticks of cucumber I cut for him to chew on 😂 he chucked them on the floor and chewed the bowl instead!!!
He's also pretty fond of the empty spoon!

ChampooPapi · 01/09/2018 08:21

Hay @avocadoincident, it's a combination of the allergen issue and a chocking hazard

SnowBambino · 01/09/2018 08:44

Glad Green Man was good avocado. We’ll definitely go next year. We might go to a daytime folk festival tomorrow but DD has been awful with a cold, so probably not realistically, given the all round lack of sleep and snottiness!! DD is usually a good sleeper with one wake up, but the last few nights she’s been waking up 3 times and been so sad. Shattered and feeling quite run down myself.

DD has pretty much enjoyed everything apart from apple and green bean. We’ve done potato, carrot, parsnip, butternut squash, broccoli, califlower, courgette, peas and avocado. Looking forward to a few more interesting combinations now that we’ve introduced a range of veggies!

Couple of questions - what meals are people giving? We’re doing small portions at lunchtime, but trying to work out when to add dinner.

DD had a few upset stomaches a while back and after a couple of appointments, the GP suggested she might have a lactose/cows milk intolerance. I’ve given up dairy (as she’s EBF) and sure enough she’s fine again, but I’m not sure what to do about weaning now. Should I push for some sort of more concrete diagnosis of an issue?

Also when recipes suggest using baby’s normal milk - are people expressing to add milk?! I am really not keen on adding that level of faff to food prep.

We’re going on holiday next week, I’m thinking i’ll just get some pouches to take, to avoid any issues with food prep etc.

It is all much more complicated than just boob!

avocadoincident · 01/09/2018 17:22

@SnowBambino I'm only doing a small lunch time purée meal and will add in a porridge breakfast next. I think then at least she has all day to digest it rather than eating then going to bed.

Thanks @ChampooPapi you are a wealth of info!

avocadoincident · 01/09/2018 17:24

@SnowBambino to answer about milk, I hand express to dilute any food down but I was just saying I might need to get the pump out as it's pretty tiresome doing it by hand and also I miss the bowl a lot 🙄😂.

I don't eat any dairy either btw

Clevs · 01/09/2018 22:34

Hello again ladies SmileOnly popping in here every now and then as I don't get on the forum so much these days.

My son is 5 months tomorrow. Has recently had his two bottom teeth come through and can now roll over. He's just going into 9-12 month clothes and is a little chunk. Currently on 98th centile for weight and length.

He's outgrown his Moses basket so will be moving into his cot soon. I started another post on here yesterday as I'm am slightly anxious about it as he can't self settle yet and needs to be fed or rocked to sleep (mostly rocked). So I can't see his transition into the cot going well as we can't rock it like we can the Moses basket.

Sleepwise, we head upstairs anywhere between 9-9.30pm and he is usually asleep by 10.30pm, sometimes earlier. He'll wake around 2am and again around 6am for a feed and then goes back down until 9.30-10am. I want to bring bedtime forward a bit but like my lie ins! We were struggling with daytime naps but have nailed those now (as long as he's being rocked/driven/pushed!), although he won't sleep for longer than 45 mins.

He's so alert now, everyone comments on how alert he is for his age. He grabs anything he can get hold of and it goes straight into his mouth. He's not been too troubled by his teeth thankfully, although has had a few little colds since he's been born and a few patches of eczema & dry skin.

avocadoincident · 02/09/2018 16:36

Hi @Clevs how about trying done white noise instead of rocking your baby? I know people rave about Shaun the sheep but you can download free apps too if you search for white noise. My baby loved the hoover sounds when she was younger.

avocadoincident · 02/09/2018 16:37

Ps be glad of 45 mins as my baby wakes after 25 minutes! She likes 3 catnaps a day and that's it. If you find anything to prolong them then let me know. X

Clevs · 02/09/2018 21:26

@avocadoincident We have got Ollie the Owl and the white noise doesn't seem to send him to sleep. We normally play the lullaby on it and I think he now associates that with going to sleep. I leave it playing and restart it when it stops after 20 mins and also leave Talk Sport on quietly for some background noise. He does love my hairdryer so perhaps I could do a recording of that. I'm using my travel hairdryer at the moment though as I burnt the motor out on my normal one using it to get him to sleep when he was smaller Blush

I've tried patting and shushing which works if he rouses but doesn't seem to work to get him asleep from an awake state.

I've recently tried rocking until he's drifting off then stopping to let him drift off on his own. Not sure if it's making a difference though.

He really should be in his cot now as he hasn't got much room to move in his basket. I'm dreading it though as I know he'll get hysterical if we can't rock him Confused

Clevs · 02/09/2018 21:28

Oh, forgot to say I have managed to extend he 45 minute naps on a couple of occasions. I go up after 40 mins as he's rousing and rock him until he drifts off again. I've sometimes been there half an hour rocking until he's in a deep enough sleep, but then have had an extra half an hour after that. Maybe worth trying after 20 minutes if you haven't already?

ChampooPapi · 03/09/2018 07:37

@avocadoincident thanks ! Also if there's a history of nut allergies in the family definitely don't start anything with nuts or seeds in untill after 12 months.

Some specialists would advise even waiting longer (up to 7 years!) But that is for very serious parental nut/seed allergies where there is more likelyhood of baby inheriting the condition

Vickylou78 · 03/09/2018 13:38

Hey @clevs don’t panic about the self settling as I think very few do it at 5 months. My baby dd still doesn’t and so I’m still cuddling to sleep and then transferring to the cot once asleep (the old sneaking the arm out slowly thing)!

She has fallen asleep a couple of times on her own (as I try every now and again) but she does grizzle for a bit and need a few visits and head strokes before she will drop off. It’s hit and miss which is why we are still cuddling to sleep. Fingers crossed she’ll get the self settling for nursery before I’m back to work in December.

HalfStar · 04/09/2018 16:18

Hi everyone, i was on this thread for a while but dropped off. Been catching up again recently, great to hear all the progress.

I have a question - has anyone's baby had a temperature yet or been ill? Dd is 6 months in a day or two and hasn't had anything until today when i realised she was hot and cranky, and took her temperature. I knew it wouldn't be long til she came down with something since schools/preschools went back here at the end of last week and she has 2 older siblings. But that was fast! Worrying a bit now. Sad have given calpol.

Vickylou78 · 04/09/2018 16:38

Hi halfstar, my baby’s has a cold already and had bit of a temp but seemed to get over it really quickly. Was interesting getting calpol in though!! In the end was some trickery involving a dummy and squirting the calpol in when she thought she was sucking the dummy! Seemed to do the trick though. I just kept checking temp wasn’t going any higher. Hope your dd is better soon x

SnowBambino · 04/09/2018 17:03

Hope your DD feels better soon! My little one has had two colds and also a bit of a raised temperature after the last set of jabs. I’ve given calpol quite a few times as she’s really seemed to be in pain from teething too. I naively thought that ebf babies wouldn’t get ill but we go to loads of classes and she chews the shared toys etc so I guess it was fairly inevitable! Rather the odd cold now than being ill for months when she starts nursery (at least that’s the hopeful theory I’m clinging to!) The last cold was last week and it’s destroying the sleeping! Waking every 3 hours on average, which she’s never done before, even as a newborn! Very tired!

HalfStar · 04/09/2018 18:15

Thank you guys for the fast responses. Yes unfortunately IME ebf babies get just as many bugs as any other. It is a bit of a red herring that they don't, although it does seem to help with tummy bugs and of course preventing dehydration which is the big worry with stuff like bronchiolitis. Anyway!

This seems to be a random virus so far, no other symotoms apart from temp and crankiness yet, which is why i was a bit worried, as i thought she was on the young side for that type of thing with a high temp. Colds at least are obvious although NOT fun so sympathies to those struggling on that front.

Sorry, I'm rambling! I'm putting her to bed now. Calpol seemed to help so fingers crossed the night will go ok. Hope you all have good nights too.

Clevs · 04/09/2018 22:12

Thanks @Vickylou78, I know 5 months is quite young to be able to self settle but I'm just anxious about the transition into the cot and how we will get him to sleep. I've downloaded a white noise app which seems to be helping. What doesn't help is my mother saying he should be able to self settle by now and she never had any problem putting me or my brothers down to sleep Angry

Clevs · 04/09/2018 22:14

@HalfStar

My son has had about 4 little colds since he was born at the beginning of April. One he caught off me but I've no idea how he got the others. None of them have seemed to bother him though and he's never ended up with a temp and after a couple of days usually seems better.

He does sneeze a lot even when he doesn't have a cold, not sure why.

Vickylou78 · 04/09/2018 23:09

Do you know what, with regard to the self settling I think it will just happen when they are ready and the changes to cot etc are never as bad as you think. I moved dd to her cot about 2 weeks ago but did it by putting the Moses basket in the cot for the first few nights and then the third night just put her in the cot (she looked so tiny) but she slept just the same as she did in the basket. Fingers crossed for you too! And if you need to rock or cuddle for a bit longer it’s fine! They all get there eventually. Good luck!

avocadoincident · 05/09/2018 10:47

@Clevs we don't self settle either. We feed till asleep then bum pat in the cot to get her to full sleep.

Your mum may be remembering things with rose tinted glasses or thinking back to you as an older baby. Maybe you were good as a baby but who cares we are all different. Eventually they just get it. I have a 19 year old and I never have to pat her bum to sleep these daysWink

Smurf123 · 09/09/2018 11:31

We pretty much feed to sleep also.. Occasionally he will self settle but it's rare!
I know the guidance is always put baby to sleep on their back but what about if they roll over to sleep on their tummy? Do you roll them back? Ds has been doing this the past week off and on but last night he was actually having a really good sleep... He had fed at midnight but was still sleeping at 5 but on his tummy.. I rolled him back over when I notice but of course that woke him up and he was awake for an hour..
Also anyone baby led weaning? What sort of food should you start with?
Hope everyone is keeping well

blinkineckmum · 09/09/2018 15:09

Hi,
Nearly 6mo now! Baby eats a stick of cucumber at each mealtime to feel included. Has tried carrot, potato, broccoli, scrambled egg, yoghurt and apple. As and when we're having them. Usually at lunchtime.
Sits up beautifully and still not proper crawling yet but getting around.
Wakes twice a night for feeds. Always cuddled to sleep as that's the best bit about having a baby!
Total joy

For BLW start
Veg - broccoli florets, cucumber sticks, green beans
Fruit - Apple, pear, banana
Egg
Dairy - yoghurt
Wheat - breadsticks/ readybrek
Fish
Meat
Simple mixed ingredients (eg: quiche, cauliflower cheese etc)
Leave strawberries and kiwi until last as they may react more at an early age
Then whatever you're eating except honey, salt...
