Not sure if a thread exists already. If so, point me in the right direction.
Here's a place to celebrate our bundles of joy and find support for everything from stitches to breastfeeding, partners and sleep and anything else we may come across in the early days to challenge us!

@Vickylou78 - yeah hopefully it means it's quick for him. He's actually been good pain wise so I hope it stays that way lol!

blinkineckmum · 15/08/2018 09:29

My dd got 2 teeth at 4.5months and is really struggling with her next ones. I think we'd be wise to wait for weaning unless advised by a doctor. The guidelines can be looked up on the NHS website.

Yes @LoveRainbow02 let’s hope it’s quick and painless Grin. Gosh tbh I’m dreading the whole teething thing! My first dd really struggled with the molars not so much in daytime but at night was a lot of crying! ... fingers crossed this one copes a bit better!
Good luck for you too!

Vickylou78 · 15/08/2018 09:49

Ps. I don’t think I’ll be weaning until 6 or 7 months as my little one seems pretty happy on just milk at the moment and is sleeping well etc. Also don’t think she’ll be sitting up on her own for a while yet.

avocadoincident · 15/08/2018 10:23

Such an interesting thread that I'm just catching up with. Sounds like everyone is getting on well and whilst there are slight differences in approaches I'm sure all the babies will flourish. We aren't weaning as such but I'm letting her taste food in a laid back way. I'm literally sticking my finger in some homemade hummus or letting her try avocado or banana and strawberry. Nothing too much as she has her whole life to eat...how fabulous a thought eh?!

We have no teeth but pints of dribble coming.

We are off to Greenman festival, camping for 5 days tomorrow...wish us luck!

blinkineckmum · 15/08/2018 10:28

Good luck, and have a wonderful time!

Hello everyone. I’ve followed this thread for a while as I also have a March 2018 baby. I got out of the habit of posting on mumsnet during my pregnancy as I was so nervous after going through recurrent miscarriage, and then haven’t really gotten back into it. Hope you don’t mind me joining in.

Interesting to see the chat about weaning. Everyone around me seems to be weaning before six months! Apparently the guidelines are under review so they may change again anyway.

DD is 5.5 months and we’ve just this week started doing a taste of a different vegetable every day, just two v small weaning spoons of home made puree after the lunchtime feed. We don’t have many baby groups at the moment until September term starts, and we go away just after DD is 6 months, so timing wise it seemed sensible to do it, even though I would have happily waited another two weeks until DD hit 6 months. We’ll probably move onto more baby led stuff after the first couple of weeks, when DD is 6 months and we’ve finally bought a high chair.

How was Green Man Festival @avocadoincident ? I really wanted to go last year but I had so much bleeding in early pregnancy I didn’t risk it, and I thought DD might be a bit young this year, but we will definitely go next year. We’re thinking of doing a local one day festival instead, I’ve bought some ear defenders!

Welcome @snowbambino! Lovely to have another March baby! I’m a bit of a phoney as my dd was born just in April (was due in March though!)

Smurf123 · 21/08/2018 21:03

Welcome @SnowBambino
My ds sounds like he is a similar age to your dd. We have started a bit more regularly with the weaning this week.just a couple of spoonfuls once a day mainly baby rice / porridge. Today he tried carrot apple and parsnip puree. Ds seemed to like it a bit better to the baby rice. He is just over 24 weeks so only a couple of weeks to the 6 months. I start back properly to full time work on Thursday so trying to wean him off the middle of day bf so seemed like a good time to start with introducing a bit of food.
We were also back at the hospital for baby clinic on Friday and consultant was happy to discharge ds. He says all problems that had appeared at / just after birth seem to have resolved. Genetic test came back negative and ruled out the rare condition they were checking for plus his calcium levels from his blood test in July show it is now down to well within normal range. He is now triple his birth weight and has gone from the 2nd percentile to between 25th and 50th.
(I've gone off on a bit of a tangent) what I was going to say though was that the consultant asked if ds was getting spoon feeds and wanted to know if he was showing interest in it. It was as if he expected ds to be getting some spoon feeds and was happy enough that we try it with ds. It's the other reason I have started giving ds a spoon feed every day. Although he didn't actually eat that much of it but he does get a taste. We will also do a bit more baby led type weaning in a couple of weeks when he is the 6 months exactly.

Vickylou78 · 21/08/2018 23:49

That’s good news that he’s doing so well smurf123 and the tests have all come back good news. Good luck with back at work!

I’m just thinking about planning for going back this week (I will be going back around 9 or 10 months mark) so I’ve got to work out the exact date soon and tell my boss. Oh and register with nursery which I keep forgetting to do! Gosh I’d better do that tomorrow really or there may be no spaces! Goodness knows how we afford it though..... may have to budget really tightly!

SnowBambino · 22/08/2018 14:43

Thanks for the welcome!

Glad your DS is doing well smurf. How are you feeling about going back to work? Will DS be going to nursery?

Vickylou we’ve just been to look round lots of nurseries, some of them have waiting lists for 2019 already!

Vickylou78 · 22/08/2018 15:25

Gosh scary how popular some nurseries are! I need to get cracking!

Smurf123 · 22/08/2018 21:34

I'm lucky in that my mum is a childminder so she will be taking ds while I'm at work so I know he will be well looked after spoilt rotten by granny. He will be the only one she has until 2pm as her others are after school kids. And I should be home by 4 or 5 at the latest.. I'll just do my planning from home if need be.
I'm ok about going back I think. I'm looking forward to the adult company and I love my job, and my kids in school well keep me busy so the days pass quickly.

Vickylou78 · 22/08/2018 22:15

Ah that sounds great Smurf and I’m sure that Granny will love looking after him too!

Vickylou78 · 22/08/2018 22:29

Do any of you do a dream feed or wake your babies around 11pm for a feed?

I’ve been feeding dd at 10.30-11pm ish since she was born as it keeps her sleeping until about 7am. On nights where I don’t do the late feed she wakes at 4-5am.

I am a night owl so staying up til 11pm is fine for me but dd used to naturally wake around this time and now I have to wake her....she won’t feed when asleep. Do you think it’s ok for me to carry on doing this? Or do you think I’ll be starting a habit of waking up for a feed around this time. Maybe I would be better to let her carry on sleeping and just get up at 4 or 5am when she wakes... but I am not a morning person so kind of dreading this!

Any advice? Anyone done dream feeds before?

I did dream feeds with my 1st dd but she would drink while half asleep and I just stopped it when she was about 10 months

SnowBambino · 23/08/2018 19:25

We’ve never done a dream feed. I am not a night owl so preferred an early night and then I can deal with a wake up in the early hours. That’s an impressive stretch that she sleeps, Vickylou. My DD is inconsistent. Quite often she will do 8 hours and then a wake up, but sometimes she can go 11 hours, or only manage 3-4 hours. My poor boobs can’t keep up!

SnowBambino · 23/08/2018 19:30

Sorry, meant to add, although it doesn’t apply to us, the routine we’ve been following suggests dropping the dream feed once two meals a day are established, presumably somewhere between 6-7 months.

Vickylou78 · 23/08/2018 20:05

Ah that’s interesting about the dream feed and two meals a day, makes sense really as I guess you hope they’ve eaten enough in day to fill them up.

But then at 7 months along vines teething and they wake up anyway even if hungry or not!

Ragdolly81 · 24/08/2018 12:14

Well my dd has her first cold and along with it a awful cough. Our weather has took a turn for the worse as well with heavy rain strong winds and really cold. And she hates having a rain cover cause she can't nose. I am quite lucky in the fact she sleeps from anywhere between 7-8 pm till 7-8 am so I get a good stretch although this cold has been waking her up but she seems to settle back down as she likes to suck her thumb so she settles herself. I can't wait for school to start back up for my other dcs as I miss talking to people the only people I see at the moment are the shop staff.

Smurf123 · 25/08/2018 08:32

How are all your babies sleeping?
Ds was sleeping fairly well until about 6 or so weeks ago and it seems to be getting steadily worse. Wednesday night he was up every single hour, Thursday night ably every 2 hours and last night was slightly better in that he slept from 930-almost 1 but then he was up about 6 or 7 times between 1 and 330.. He did then sleep until 630 fed then chatted and went back to sleep himself until 8 so while it was better than the previous 2 nights we are still really tired.
I did get a book on sleep training but I'm not sure about letting him cry.. He just seems to get more and more worked up of he is left for any length of time.. Has anyone sleep trained? Any ideas ups recommend? Thanks

Vickylou78 · 25/08/2018 09:27

Sorry to hear about cold rag dolly - hope all better quickly.

Sorry to hear about the sleeping smurf! Maybe it’s the 6 month sleep regression?! Grin I would think that you are best not sleep training just yet as still really young. I did do ‘pick up put down’ with my first dd when she was about 10 months and I was convinced she wasn’t waking for milk. With pick up put down you pick them up when they cry but only cuddle them right until they have calmed and you put them straight back into the cot and say night night. Then every time after when they cry you pick them up and cuddle until they stop crying and then as soon as they stop you put them back down. I needed to do this several times with my dd and eventually she gave up and went back off. First two nights of this was picking up many many times but after a few nights I think they learn that they can only sleep in their cots and it becomes less and less until a quick rub on their head and put dummy back in works and then they don’t wake ..... maybe google pick up put down as bet someone else would explain better! I liked it as it didn’t involve any crying or leaving baby alone. But is hard on the back picking up several times!!

Ragdolly81 · 25/08/2018 09:46

Thanks took my dd the doctors yesterday as her cough is bad turns out she has a chest infection. She is very ill but still very happy and smiling and laughing.
I never sleep trained any of mine they all kind of just feel into a good pattern themselves although I could do with doing it with my 5 year old now as he is a terrible sleeper. He was great as a baby but as he has got older just doesn't sleep. But that might be down to his developmental issues. If I was going to sleep train I like the idea of pick up put down myself as I can't stand the crying either I always feel bad when they cry.

LittleButStillLoud · 25/08/2018 09:56

Hi, hope you don't mind a late addition to the group but I've only just found this thread!

My DS is just turned 5 months and is now dribbling like anything!! Last night was pretty bad for crying and I think teething pain, so hoping that a tooth will emerge soon! Normally his sleep is fairly consistent, waking twice a night for feeds. Even when he was waking more in the night it was ok when it was similar times each night.

The posts on weaning have been interesting. Lots of the parents I know around here are weaning early but we've decided to wait until 6 months and do blw. He sits in a high chair with us at dinner though and plays with a couple of toys, and is now starting to watch us eat more so I think he'll be ready in a few weeks time!

Sorry to hear about the cold ragdolly, hope she recovers soon!

MrsL2016 · 25/08/2018 09:58

Sorry to hear your little one has a chest infection @ragdolly81. I do something similar to pick up and put down. My DS is pretty good at self soothing and I don't want to ruin a good thing by rocking/cuddling to sleep to often. Although it is very tempting because I love the cuddles, even if carrying him around now is an olympic sport.

Smurf123 · 25/08/2018 13:58

@Ragdolly81 hope dd is feeling better soon!

Thanks @Vickylou78 I'm glad to hear others think it is a bit early to sleep train. My husband thinks ds should be sleeping through the night but I can't stand the thought of letting him cry. I think I'll try to get a bit more of a bedtime routine going and try and put him down a bit earlier but keep doing it the way we have been which is generally feed/ cuddle to sleep. Ds can go back to sleep himself after his early morning feed - he has done this 3 out of the past 4 mornings, he just doesn't seem to do it any other time but I did say to dh earlier that a week ds wouldn't have done that at all so maybe he will just get himself back into a routine.. Hopefully. He's still in our room and with us for all naps as I don't want to put him up for naps until we are past the 6 month mark.
