Hello Strangers!
SOH - FGS, you did not "let down" Mathilda during labour. I can empathise, because I let things like that get to me too, but you're just going to HAVE to snap out of it. You are being more stubborn about breastfeeding than anyone I've ever heard of. She's over 4 weeks now. She won't get nipple/ teat confusion at this stage. Start expressing and when you have 3oz - let DH give her a feed at the weekend and GET SOME REST! I know DH is working super-hard, but you are too! You are keeping two people alive - you and M. It's exhuasting. Great news that she was going 3 hours between feeds yesterday. I hope she keeps it up.
BTW - A took a dummy for two days and then refused them. However, when I KNOW she's had a big fat feed and is still rooting; I give her my little finger to suck. It either calms her enough to get to sleep or if she won't calm down I know she's either got wind or is genuinely still hungry. (Almost never the latter).
I wonder if M was "snacking" and not taking a full feed and therefore not sleeping very long?
MrsJB - You poor thing. I think you've done incredibly well up to now. Is there any possibility of seeing some sort of lactation expert - just to set your mind at rest that you've done all you can? I know it's a bit more difficult for you, with not having the NCT and stuff. Most importantly, DO listen to your own advice and don't feel bad if you decide to pack it in. Every baby really IS different.
Well having finally managed to heal my nipples and not wince in agony every time A latched on I got feckin' mastitis on Tuesday night. Probably self inflicted as I decided to walk 45 mins to my NCT meeting and walk back again. Felt bullet-proof at the time, but 2 hours after getting home I was in tears, pain in right breast, flu-like symptoms... Boo. HV & MW both said I prob succumbed as I was low from overdoing it. (Take note SOH) Luckily as nipples were healed, it wasn't too awful to keep putting A to the affected breast and between that and a hot water bottle I managed to clear the infection. Had to spend the day in bed yesterday as I was actually too weak to walk further than the bathroom. Feel fine today, but suppose I ought to take it easy!
Oh, if you can join a "new" group at NCT, mine is a "post-natal course", it's less daunting, because everyone is new and nobody knows each other.
Am considering "the deed"... And planning to get a new Mirena IUS fitted at my 6 week check.
A doing well. Was weighed today (2 weeks old) and is a whopping 10lb 8oz. She was 9lb 5oz at birth. Biffa Baby. It's no wonder I'm losing weight. Was chuffed to have lost 2 of the 3 stone I gained just by giving birth, but have shed a few more pounds since. Unfortunately was at least 20 lbs overweight before getting up the duff, but this is a good start!
Welcome JanW! I wouldn't worry about routine for the first two weeks. Get your feeding established first. Read er "that book" by "that woman" by all means, but perhaps also read Baby Whisperer or Baby Secrets too as they're less regimental. Then you can choose which regime is most likely to suit you.
One good tip for night time is to make sure you're fully awake for the feed so you can keep baby awake and ensure he gets a full feed and not just a snack.
