Right ladies this is going to be used as a tip's, questions and answers etc thread for those of us who have had our babies and can't keep up with the chat on the other thread. (my word those ladies can talk)

And of course everyone is welcome to post on here the more advice etc the better.

MIAST, glad to hear the colic was better with Colief. Just a thought but what formula are you using? Some tend to be tougher on some babies tummies than others. It might be wirth chaning it to see if she gets on better with another one. Aptamil is supposed to be one of the kindest on babies tummies which is why we've choosen it. Sorry if you have already tried to change the formula, just thought i'd mention it

Birdiemum · 04/05/2007 10:47

All this time to catch up and now she's waking up! So no housework done and just time for a quick post...

Yesterday we had our first "whole body poo"! You know, where they are covered from the neck down - front and back...?? That was fun. In she went to her Tummy Tub. She is very unsettled in the evenings - classic colic behaviour - I'm just not sure if I believe that is what she has - may have more to do with my milk supply...

However she made up for it by sleeping from 10.30pm through to 4.45am in her Amby Nest, swaddled in her miracle blanket (god I love the internet!) so we are feeling refreshed this morning. Also love that Mamaway site, Ellie. If only I had any money left...

Talking of which - was it Emmy who wanted to know about Lilypadz? I think I must have started using mine too early but they have been great. Now I think the stickiness might be wearing off a bit but I still use them at night which means I can sleep without a bra and Octo's lovely damp bra/pad problem!

Eca - have you tried all local midwife units? We found a midwife who had trained in the tongue-tie snipping (frenulotomy) and she just did it straight away with no fuss. Gotta be better than bloody doctors IMO. I was also amazed by Devon's attitude towards the tongue-tie thing ("we don't do it") given the overwhelming push towards breastfeeding that seems to come at us from everywhere!

Pinions - Rose has a white coating on her tongue but so far the consensus is that it is not thrush as no nappy rash or coating on the sides of her cheeks etc. I am fine also although my left nip always more painful to latch onto than the right. Good luck in getting yours sorted and hang on in there.

Ok now she's really waking up!

Birdiemum · 04/05/2007 10:48

SOSKL - using formula for the odd top-up and another vote for Aptimil.

maveta · 04/05/2007 10:52

Hello, hello.. runs in quickly amid increasingly threatening squeaking waking up noises coming from Noah´s basket

Thanks for all of your lovely comments re. my engorged breasts (or something that sounds less dodgy, but you know what I mean).. it is MUCH better today thanks.. the cold compresses and gritted teeth mostly got me through. My nipples are so sore, and I do find the night feeds the most painful.. undoubtedly because I´m so tired. But it´s really going fine and so far easier than I had hoped so fingers crossed it keeps going.

Octo - have been using real nappies in the day but caving and using disposables at night, not bad for not even a week old though! We will eventually use real nappies at night I am sure but it just seems too much right now. I´ll email you as soon as I get a chance, always thrilled to try out new nappies! So far only used the bimbles, bamibineo and swaddlebees which are all fab though the bambineo seem to soak through quicker, the others are a bit too big still. We put him in a bambineo with a ME airflow on top yesterday (otherwise have only used rikki) and were in hysterics at how big his arse was. Could hardly change him for laughing.. think the MEs will be waiting a bit longer, poor thing looked like a bloomin´ weeble.

Aaargh got to go... love to you all xx

muminasaggytummy · 04/05/2007 11:55

Forgot to say before...using SMA gold....will see how we go before I switch...don't want to cause further upset at the moment but will keep the Aptimil in mind
Gotta run she's squeaking! lol

Sexonknackeredlegs · 04/05/2007 12:20

Hi ladies, and thanks for the advice re formula. I have bought some Aptamil this am so may try switching. I have read that some babies find SMA a bit rich and with Katie being only 7 pounds, I wonder if her system is struggling with it a bit.

MIAST, really glad the colic seems to be under control and you had a good night.

Hello to everyone else - sorry hve read everything and promptly forgotten it all - really tired today.

Katie was awake at 1.00 a.m for a bottle - polished off 4 oz's, wouldn't settle, and had to have another 2 oz's, by which time it was 3.00 a.m. Becky then came in at 6.30.

Off out to lunch with dh now, so will be back on later.

Really hope you are all well. Thinking of you all loads. xx

Eddas · 04/05/2007 12:29

Just a quickie as H now really crying for his milk(it's warming) but i have heard that a lot of babies struggle with SMA so may be well worth swapping. My HV said that Aptamil and Farleys are both kind to tummies and having used both I can say that my two seem settled. Aptamil is a little bit more expensive about a £1 I think. My friend said it's cause it's got extra stuff in it not sure what though,LOL

Anyway HTH

Whendoobygotstuckupthechimney · 04/05/2007 12:43

Hi Ladies
SOKL..I use Aptamil too.The Aptamil Extra..the midwives said the 1st was weaker..i started Milo on that then moved to the extra about 10 days later.DS1 had it too.
The feeding frenzy think is interesting..sometimes he has 4oz 3 hourly then 3oz followed by an oz or 2 an hour later...still trying to find a routine
He spends the night chuntering, tutting and grumbling. If he could sleep on me i rekon he would go to sleep for 3 or 4 hours but i worry i would drop him or roll on him and don't fancy sitting bolt upright all night!
JOGGING...and THIN...are 2 words that should not be allowed on this thread just yet

Eddas · 04/05/2007 12:59

Dooby, ds is taking 4oz every 3 hours sometimes 2 hours but could be 6 Would you recommend the aptamil extra as I don't think the normal is filling him for long?

liath · 04/05/2007 13:50

Hi all. Just been out for kunch, had a nice glass of red and feel a bit woozy. Poor ds about to get some too as he sounds like he's waking up (massive farts and grunts coming out of the carry cot....). I don't know about anyone else but abstaining from alcohol while BF is not on the agenda here after 9 months of wine tasting wierd it's nice to be able to enjoy it again.

Another aptimil vote, used it for dd and much better than any other firmula we tried - hipp organic made her really constipated.

Heading home to my parents' tomorrow - all three sisters will be together for the first time since we had aour babies as middle sis is coming up from London - i can't wait!! There will be boobs out in all directions !

Bugmum · 04/05/2007 14:14

Flying visit (well, hobbling one! )

Hope everyone is well and all offspring thriving. We are doing okay; I do have a UTI, it seems (thanks for the suggestion, Octo), and am now on stuff for it which is making a big difference. Bladder still not right, though loads better, but my MW says I had a truly impressive episiostomy and it isn't therefore surprising Actually went out to vote yesterday, taking both kids with us, which was our first family outing! ANd registered the birth today, so am slowly gettin g there.

MIAST - We have the waking with tummy ache prob as well. Otherwise, Gabe seems settled - it's just those few hours in the night when you can least cope with them. Am going to change from loose swaddle to proper swaddle tonight, to see if that makes a diff.

nutty - does your hospital have an Afterthoughts service? Ours does, and I found it invaluable after DS1's traumatic birth (they go over all your birth notes with you, to help you see what happened, and they DO allow anger). Just a thought. Also, eat very dark choc for the iron thing

Pinions - we are meant to eat about 500 extra cals on top of our recommended daily allowance; last time, I think I took this too liberally and ended up rather fat for a few months . But you can of course cut out crap and so on. Lucewheel - porridge is great if you can stomach it (I can't!), and also anything bean or lentil based tends to be nutritious and filling. Curries and stews and so on. You have to be arsed to make them, though, and I'm so not up for that yet!

SOKL - Sorry you have been feeling down. The trick is, never pretend otherwise!

Love to everyone else. ARe we nearly all here, now? Just a couple of stragglers, I think.

Pinions · 04/05/2007 14:17

Jogging,jogging,jogging!!!!

I'm such a wind up merchant - then again you haven't seen the size of my backside. Got to stay positive. TBH when I come back I feel like i could conquer the world and have a mad few hours doing all the jobs under the sun but i have to say it doesn't last.

BIRDIE - thats why i mentioned it. I would just keep a close eye on it.
TBH it was more the "unsettled" thing that got to me as in never ever happy not even after food/sleep etc etc etc. Very grizzly. One painful breast and white coating on the tongue i would say get to the doctors!!!

Pinions · 04/05/2007 14:24

LIATH - i asked the mw about alcohol and she said a couple of glasses a night was totally fine in fact if anything i think she encouraged it!!!

BUGMUM - an extra 500 cals really??? i am dieting anyway but still having a very healthy evening meal cos determined to shift the weight this time (just cereal for brek and snack for lunch). Have cut out ALL the crap.

Pinions · 04/05/2007 14:28

And on filling foods.

I would second porridge but a bit warm for this time of year. I would try OATIBIX which is really filling as made from oats and not like horrible cereal. Also FRUIT!

LesleyR · 04/05/2007 17:13

May never catch up with this thread now we're all mostly PN!

George is colicky I think. Similar to others on the thread he's uncomfortable, windy and gripey. He settles better on me than in cot. Tried infacol which does seem to help but he HATES the taste. Goes bright red and screams when I give it to him - it is def the taste as he takes his antibiotics like a little angel. DH went a bit pale reading a testimonial in a baby book about colic lasting from 3 weeks to 3 months! He had the day off yesterday and found the grizzling a bit stressful.

We're off to ILs in Northumberland for the weekend, so that George can meet SIL and BIL and I can have a few days of eating nice food that someone else has cooked.

Hope you all have a nice weekend with sunshine and no drama!

nuttygirl · 04/05/2007 18:33

Lesley - have a nice weekend.

SOKL - Erin's feeding seems to be completely random and she still won't take more than 3oz from 1 bottle. I've been using SMA gold (only because I bought in a tin in case bf didn't go to plan and it was the only formula in the supermarket in a small tin!) so perhaps I'll give Aptimil a try. I'm starting to think I should have read up on ff a bit more!

Have been really today, DH left me with loads to do this morning and I felt like crap. My bum is still really sore...it feels as tho it's bruised but I thought it would have healed by now (erin's 3 wks today). By the end of a feed I have tears rolling down my cheeks from the pain.

I don't know if my hospital offers the opportunity to talk through the birth. My community mw said I needed to debrief but didn't give me any details of how/where/when . I've asked about it in my complaint because if they do offer it I think people should be made more aware of it and if they don't offer it, they should. However they are now late acknowledging my complaint I was going to ask my HV but she was a complete divvy who didn't seem the slightest bit interested in Erin and when I said I was a bit sore still she just said "yeah" and carried on with her talk.

nuttygirl · 04/05/2007 18:34

Oh and Octo - congrats on the ring!!!!

muminasaggytummy · 04/05/2007 20:00

LesleyR - have just read your post about the infacol and thought you may have missed my post about Coleif Drops - they are brilliant and you add it to the formula or breastmilk and it is tasteless.

It has worked far better than the Infacol for Robyn.

Just thought I'd mention it in case you wanted to try them
x

Eddas · 04/05/2007 20:54

MIAST, I've got a voucher for £2 off colief drops if you'd like it. It's to use in Lloyds pharmacy

If you do want it send me an email with your address and i'll send it to you, [email protected]

ONLY 3 TO GO NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

eca · 05/05/2007 11:35

morning ladies! i just started to catch up on this thread and thought 'wow, there's lots of posts today' and then realised i was thinking it was friday and actually no-one been on here yet today!!

not got time for a long post, dad's visiting. Just giving T a quick feed. Still not comfortable feeding infront of male family members. is that wierd???

Went to a place called Wyken Vineyard yesterday (ellie - do you know it. it's near you). Didn't realise it was quite such a posh joint, thought it was a bit more family friendly, but there was a sign on the door that said "NO CRY BABIES" Thought that's a bit off really. Felt quite uncomfortable and was just thankful T didn't cry. He was the only child there. Wont be hurrying back.

right better go. hope you all had good nights. liath i see you were up keeping emmymummy company.

Sexonknackeredlegs · 05/05/2007 11:47

FANTASTIC NEWS EMMYMUMMY!!!!

Another lovely name as well. Really pleased for you all and look forward to hearing the details.

How is everyone else?

I am feeling pants - have a poorly tummy, and am wondering if Katie and I both have it. Joy! She had green poo for a couple of days which I posted about, and it has now gone back to yellow thankfully, but a bit runny. Not sure though if this is due to me changing to Aptamil yesterday. It did say they might be looser stools initially. SORRY FOR THE DETAILED DESCRIPTION!! It is all so confusing. Dh was great though and I lay in until 9.30 and he had done a load of chores downstairs. He has now taken B out for a bike ride in to town, so am going to relax here.

See you all later. x

Bramshott · 05/05/2007 12:05

Oh EM that's brilliant news! So glad she's here and you got your homebirth.

Have tried to catch up but now all blank!

Pinions - glad you've got some thrush treatment. When I was worried we had it, I printed off some good infofrom the Breastfeeding Network site. I don't think we have though - think the white coating here really is just milk.

Waspelly - I laughed so much at your description of that "I've lost the baby" terror moment!! Thought it was just me! Do you feed lying down? We are, and it makes such a difference to the amount of rest. I keep a folded muslin under my pillow and pull it out underneath her, so then I know that whichever side the muslin is is the side we fed on last. It's during the day that I lose track and am constantly feeling my boobs to see which is fuller!

Mammyjo -sorry to hear all not great with feeding. Whatever you decide, she's had nearly 6 weeks of breastmilk, which has got to be good.

Bugmum - glad things are getting a bit better for you.

SOSKL - sorry to hear that you snd Katie are suffering.

DH away on a stag weekend this w/e so I'm just waiting for my mother to turn up. Took both girls to the village gardening club this morning - lots of gossiping grannies coo-ing over Orla, who all seemed to know she was born in the car!

Pinions · 05/05/2007 14:19

Hi all.

Feeling mega efficient today. Been to the town hall to register the birth today (very posh!!), filled out forms for child benefit(money grabber)and rang the tax credits!

Fed baby at 8am before we left and he did not have another feed till we got back at 11.30 which i thought was great! Had french toast in a restaurant though so am only allowed ryveta for lunch.

Baby is still asleep downstairs and has not been this settled for ages. Was about to put weeks but then realised he is only weeks old!! Bit strange wandering around town i feel completely normal and then realise i have got a newborn baby with me when he starts to yelp.

Have completely chucked out my old wardrobe and have started to gradually replace it,and IT FEELS GREAT!

Don't know if anyone else has noticed but nearly all summer fashion is maternity style tops bloody great. Smocks/pinnys/floaty tops and dresses. I am trying to NOT look pregnant.
