good morning!

we've got an in ear thermometer and it's great, got it on special from lloyds pharmacy was £10 i think..usually £40, will see if they've still got them NJ then i might be able to pick one up for you!

NatalieJane · 28/03/2007 14:48

No, they didn't do any tests, I wish they had have done actually, because on the face of it there is nothing else wrong with him, and surely no one would get a high temp. like that for no reason?

I do have a thermometre that we bought when DS1 was born (don't know where it is actually now I come to think of it) but I am useless in these sorts of things (obviously, I nearly killed him last night because I just don't do health things!) I don't even know what sort of temperature is normal and when it is high or low, I just go off how they feel.

Thanks Stacey, we have a Lloyds in town I'll have a look when I go in on Friday.

I am just thanking my lucky stars that the ambulance arrived so quickly and that they obviously knew what to do, I don't think George would have taken getting much hotter and wrapped up in a blanket and being cuddled, it wouldn't have taken much longer for him to get much hotter.

I am rambling, sorry, it just helps to come to terms with it when you go over it IYKWIM?

oh nj lol!

would you like a quick lesson (baring in mind i'm a gynae nurse who looks at fanjo's all day (apparently)nothing to do with paeds)???????

normal temp ranges from 36.5 up to 37.2 (ish, i could waffle on about baselines but lets not overcomplicate it!) in fact, i'm not really worried until it gets over 37.9 (but thats just my little number! i'm the same at work - no reason for it!!) up to that i strip and cool them off, over that it's calpol and calpofren!

ds1 gets random temps when he's teething? maybe it's that, but otherwise theirs usually a reason, such as infetion.. also not sure at what age they can start regulating their own temp? high temps can cause you to shiver and feel cold and wrapping up is a natural instinct, but actually the worst thing to do (yet i can never follow this advice when i have flu and will wrap myself up in layers of duvets!!)

OP posts:
staceym11 · 28/03/2007 16:13

oh dear iv never been worried baout dd till her temp hits 40! lol

have always given calpol if over 37 but never got worried till over 40! maybe i should rethinkg that!

staceym11 · 28/03/2007 16:14

didnt mean 37 there meant 38

saralou100 · 28/03/2007 16:24

then 38's your magic number... i just have this as a magic number is all... i can't give any reason why, and it's certainly not research based!!!

i think a dr would laugh at me if i bleeped for less.. and it's generally gotta be over 38 before they would take blood cultures!

OP posts:
saralou100 · 28/03/2007 16:28

and my training makes me pick up on these things earlier

you can hear the outcry... nurse knew i had a temp and did nothing!!! not gonna happen!

i'm legally accountable for all my actions and those of staff under me... big responsibility on these shoulders sometimes!

thats my excuse and i'm sticking to it!!!

Bugger just wrote out a message and it has gone, here we go again...

Got hold of my mum finally (how dare she go out when I need her?!!) she said she remembers her sister having convulsions because of high temps, and she remembers her mum and dad plonking her sister in a sink of cold water to cool her down, which obviously we wouldn't do nowadays, but she wondered if it could be a family thing, so I rang the doctor, who made me feel like a complete prick again, and he said the same as the hospital really, keep him cool, give calpol, ring 999 if he fits again.

Why isn't anyone interested in finding out why he got so hot instead of just blaming me for wrapping him up when he was shivering and freezing cold? I know I am to blame for him getting hotter but he had already started the shivering before I wrapped him up, which means he was already too hot by then.

Doc said normal temp is around 37, convulsions can start any point after 39 so that will forever be imprinted on my brain, along with the fan forever set up raring to go, and a bloody great big bottle of any type of alcohol substance for me if it happens again!

Can you believe he is now led peacfully sleeping nice and cool no problems, and I don't think I slept at all, I haven't stopped shaking yet, and I just feel all cufuddled, bloody kids....

saralou100 · 28/03/2007 16:48

no nj, you just did what your instinct told you to do with a small baby... it's not your fault at all!

i remember reading something about the kiss test actually being just as accurate with regards to temps (you know kiss 'em on the forehead if it feels hot he has a temp!) so if he felt cold you did do right!

i wouldn't worry too much about finding the cause...if it was an infection then he would have let you know about it by now surely.. he wouldn't be happy or content as your saying he is now!!

oh, and pmsl at your need for alcohol!! it's the only answer sometimes!!

OP posts:
NatalieJane · 28/03/2007 16:53

LOL I have never read anything about a kiss test, but that is what I go off, I find sometimes my hands are too cold or too hot to decide if the kids are too hot or too cold, so I always kiss them and then I know!

saralou100 · 28/03/2007 17:07

do you ever watch everybody loves raymond? thats what the mum does!

NatalieJane · 28/03/2007 17:32

Nope, never seen it.

George is warm again he has just a short sleeve vest on, I don't know what to do.

staceym11 · 28/03/2007 17:44

NJ undress and try luke warm water on a flannel to cool him down.....and calpol of course!

saralou100 · 28/03/2007 17:58

fan, flannel, and strip off!

calpol when it's due!

poor little man

Never fear NJ i am here!!!

Lol here i go with Jack's medical history i can tell you all sorts!
He had convulsions several times and has luckily grown out of them now, the tricky thing is a ferible convulsion (temp related) can come and go so suddenly if his temp suddenly spiked then he would have convulsed then it can drop strieght away, so sometimes it is hard to tell the cause of the convulsion.
But they can happen for no reason what so ever and alot of kids that have them grow out of them by the age of 3 (like my Jack)

You did what you thought was best so don't stress yourself at the end of the day you called an ambo when you needed to and he is ok.
It is the most sacry thing when your child gets rucshed into hospital, i remeber when Jack was taken in last time, i was not only worried about him i was also worried about how badly i handled it as i panicked big time!

I hope your feeling a litte better anyway.

I hope Debbsy is ok to.

Harry is really suffering with his teeth, but i think he has hayfever aswell where we live next to the farm.
His eyer are red and watery, his nose is running and red and he is dribbling and screaming his head off all the time, (poor things just nodded off)
I have canceled his jabs tomorrow untill he feels better, but on the plus side he has been happier today on more solids.

1 sec my washing machine is beeping and it drives me mad let me turn it off......................

Right, Nj i will second the strip off and calpol! But for what it's worth, harry is constantly boiling! He is in his cot now in just a short vest, even in cold weather he feels boiling and his temp is always between 37.4 - 38.4 never any lower.

I hope he gets better soon.

NatalieJane · 28/03/2007 20:55

Thanks everyone, he did get quite warm again but we stripped him off, set the fan on him, and he is cooling down, I think, it is so hard to know, he was bloody freezing yesterday before it happened so we can't decide if he is cooling down because he is cool or because he is hot.... confused? Me to!!

Debbsyandson · 28/03/2007 21:29

hi all sorry you went through this nj in my humble experience i would say maybe ds has a little infection? how bloody frightening for you i do hope he gets well really soon. How is he now?I can see if i can get you one of those thermometers if you like i work for a part of lloyds so threfore get discount 20% i think it is.

NatalieJane · 28/03/2007 21:33

Thanks Debbsy I am going to go and get one tomorrow, we are constantly checking and then questioning what we find. He doesn't seem unwell in any way other than the temp, he is eating and pooing normally, he is cooling down now and is due the next lot of calpol at 10.15 so hopefully that will be it for tonight. It is just so bloody scary, I am still all het up and not really knowing what is going on in my head!

How are things at home?

Debbsyandson · 28/03/2007 21:37

i would get some nurofen for kids too or calprofen as the ingredient is ibuprofen and works along side paracetamol so they can have the 2 together.Just keep the fan on him and his cotton sleepsuit, bet your scared to leave his side arent you?

NatalieJane · 28/03/2007 21:42

We already have calprofen, but we haven't used it today as the calpol is keeping it at bay for now - touch wood. He does now have a short sleeve vest on, just waiting to see if that makes him get too hot again, the fan is still going, and yes I am terrified to leave him, I got to sleep about 5 this morning woke up at 6.30 and panicked because I had been asleep. And now I am putting off going to bed because I know I am that tired if I lay down I will fall asleep and then I won't hear him... can't wait to get the thermometre tomorrow, will take all of the second guessing away!

Debbsyandson · 28/03/2007 21:52

((((((((((((((((hugs ))))))))))))) wish i could do more xxxxxxx

NatalieJane · 28/03/2007 22:00

Thanks Debbsy, I am going to go and feed him, bless him, I have been shoving him on as much as I can today to make sure he keeps hydrated, poor kid is probably sick of people feeling and prodding.

Hope things start getting better for you, g'night xxx
