Here we go girls - Amie, Kiwi, Dixia, Flannelettepyjamas, we can start comparing motherhood notes on this one and wait for the others to arrive one by one. Although I suspect the other thread will be our home until there's critical mass. To those of you still waiting to join the post-natal people - get a move on!!

Amie, Jordi is becoming more wakeful in the day. He makes the most extraordinary noises both awake and asleep! On quite a few days he has had one period between feeds where he hasn't gone back to sleep - I've put him in the bouncer a few times so he can look around, and sometimes when he's in the moses basket for part of the time between feeds he's awake but quietish. I was starting to think he was more awake at night too but last night was great - fed him at 10, bed by 11.30, slept till 2, fed again and bed by 3, I woke 5.45. The next phase he didn't settle again so took him onto bed with me about 7.45 and he went to sleep till 9.30ish.

Shanks I've wondered about waking Jordi up in the daytime, but as you say, not sure how you do it. I'm still very much in the mindset from the neonatal unit of he needs his sleep to grow, don't disturb him. Not sure how much longer I should keep thinking like this. It's weird having a premmie cos you never know which bits of his development need to be treated as actual age or adjusted age - is he nine weeks old (which he is today!) or four days old? (which he should have been today).

Amie, I constantly worry about overfeeding Jordi but am trying my best not to - hopeless task I think, you'd probably worry either way. He's now sometimes taking 120ml (4oz) bottles and having most of them - he had three like that yesterday/in the night - but then now, for example, he's had about 70ml and has fallen asleep. My sister has said not to worry and it's better for them to have a bit of weight to lose if they get sick or for when they start moving around, when they do lost weight apparently. If you can do it, I'd urge you to carry on bfing - I'm so envious of those of you with milk of your own. But at the end of the day, you've got to do what is best for you both. Is there maybe a bf support group you can go to locally, just to talk things through with other people (even the sleepless nights!).

Fox, your little Monti is gorgeous! What a great picture - so much hair too! I think he even beats Jordi when he was born.

Jordi's getting much more vocal now, and is also farting like the devil. Is this normal? I wonder if it's because of the formula. He seems to have started doing it much more just in the past few days. Having said he's fallen asleep, he's now squirming away in the basket, so I'd better change him and see if he wants a bit more food. I'm trying to leave a gap between feeding and changing to stop him bringing milk up if possible. I keep wondering where the manual is that should surely come along with the placenta....

wow, what a stunner Foxy... Monti looks delightful

I'm glad this thread is running with lots of posts! It's been brilliant reading through your comments and seeing some of my own queries / concerns. Kate is a great sleeper although she has begun to stay awake for longer periods. I am going to have to wake her shortly or we won't get to the school gate happy or on time. This will be the first time I have woken her so I hope that she is able to feed - I don't fancy walking down to school with a crying baby. Dh went back to work today so it's our first real day on our own. It's gone a lot better than I expected. I've managed to make my own cups of tea and lunch .

kiwibella · 12/03/2007 14:20

Callie - Kate is a tremendous farter too. I don't think it's the formula (we are doing the bottle top-up too and so pleased to see others doing the same because I've agonised over this). She doesn't poo much so I figure that her farting is her way of getting rid of something!

AmieR · 12/03/2007 14:43

Callie - Thank you so much for that post! its put my mind at rest so much! Which was well needed as I was driving myself mad with the "what shall I do" question. Joseph has been wide awake for a few hours now, and has not cried to be fed for almost 3 hours now! He farts like a trooper too, but does a lot of pooing, not every nappy, but every other one I'd say, apart from over night, which are usually just wet!

Jordi is about 2 months old now isn't he?

Kiwi - My DH wnt back to work on friday, but I had my Mum with me, today is the real first day on my own too, I've had lunch and a few drinks too! I feel very proud of myself!

muppethasakitten · 12/03/2007 14:45

Love little Monti Foxy! He has quite a lot of hair doesn't he? Looks very cuddly!

Feel guilty that i'm only getting woken up once in the night... I'm certain it won't last and i promise neither of my other two were like it!
I think he just gets completely saturated with my milk and is like that Monty Python character - Mr Creosote - that man who eats everything on the menu and can't move but has a "wafer thin mint" to finish his meal and then explodes!
To be honest there's a part of me that wants him to wake up more... there's nothing like snuggling with a newborn in bed when the house is dark and quiet.

Foxy - my nipples were looking a bit worse for wear but i have used the lanisoh stuff and also some avent nipple cream - it does help.

foxcub · 12/03/2007 17:20

Yeah, Monti is lovely isn't he?

Muppet - I love the nightime cuddles with Monti. He just kind of gazes round the room in wonder!

I'm using vaseline on the nips atm as I'm allergic to most things with Loanolin in, but it does seem to make them less excruciating to keep them soft doesn't it?

kiwibella · 12/03/2007 17:24

Amie... yay, us!! Dh is home - the earliest ever and very happily cuddled up with his girls on the sofa.

kiwibella · 12/03/2007 17:27

can I ask a bizarre question regarding using vaseline on the nipples... do you wipe it off before feeding?? I have the bf support people coming tomorrow because Kate does not always latch on well. There is no obvious damage to my nipples but, at times, they feel as though they are grazed when she is feeding. She has made this odd gaping hole in my left nipple!

DollyPopsOut · 12/03/2007 19:21

Hello ladies - still on the other thread at the moment, but will be over here in a week or so, god willing (CS on 19th March).

Foxy - where's the pics of the lovely monti? Am being super thick and can't find.

Kiwi your girls are GORGEOUS!

Hello other ladies, hope you are all doing well. Look forward to catching up properly in a short while.

6 days to go - ohmigod, better pack the bag...

XXXXX

divastrop · 12/03/2007 20:06

hi all, congratulations to those who have dropped.i will read the whole thread when i get a chance.

she is a wonderful little girl, however i'm feeling rather like crap and things aren't too good at home so i will stay away till i feel more sociable.

hope everybody is ok.take care xxx

eidsvold · 12/03/2007 21:31

foxy - monti is gorgeous.

kiwi - I used lanisoh - that foxy is allergic too - it can stay on. I used it with dd2 ( only she was breastfeed) as a preventative rather than waiting till something happened iyswim.

bethoo · 12/03/2007 22:28

kiwi - no yu do not need to wipe of the vaseline as i asked the mw when she told me about it. i suppose that as long as you do not put it on thinckly you should be ok as it is non toxic. but i suppose it is each to their own but it will not harm he baby either way.

foxy - cannot access your proofile t osee baby!

thanks all for imput ref wipes vs cotton and water. i found that the cotton and wwater alne tended to dry the skin and went through so many.

if anyone remember the trouble i had with dp well he has pulled through, in fact he is in the kitchen right now cooking for me!

is anyone watching heroes?

foxcub · 12/03/2007 22:32

kiwi - vaseline is ok, i only wipe off excess

bethoo - err monti is on paddlechicks profile as i'm too dumb to set mine up

oooh eerr monti is sitting on my lap and just filled his nappy ...

flannelettepyjamas · 13/03/2007 11:21

Hi everyone, I've just found this thread.
Congratulations to all the new mums here.
Jessica was born at 33 weeks and 1.16kgs, 2lb, 9oz on 11th Feb. So she's 4 weeks and 3 days old now. She's still in special care and will hopefully be coming home in the next week to 10 days depending on feeding. I'm going to the hospital twice a day which is a mean feat trying to sort out babysitting for my 21 month old DD1. Looking forward to having her home. The feeding is a bit hit and miss at the moment. Lots of on-off-on-off. I have to latch her on about 25 times before she finally starts to suck properly. Very frustrating for both of us. Anyway, fingers crossed it will all sort itself out.

flannelettepyjamas · 13/03/2007 11:21

Callie - Jordi - Jan 8
AmieR - Joseph - Feb 15th

Muppet - Samuel - March 5
FlannelettePJs - Jessica - Feb 11th

AmieR · 13/03/2007 11:33

Welcome Flanalette and Welcome Baby Jessica!

kiwibella · 13/03/2007 13:16

bless, what a little dot Jessica must be. Keep going with the breastfeeding... hopefully she will catch on soon. Take care x x

foxcub · 13/03/2007 13:53

Hi Flannelette - great news and congratulations. Keep going with the latching on. My baby, Monti, is also having trouble - I'm having to latch on about 5 times each feed until its bearable and he's getting milk.

Keep going its worth it

How is everyone else.

Am trying to get Monti into a routine so I can do school run next week.

atm he's feeding 6.30am, 10-11am, 1.30pm, 4.30pm, 6.30/7pm, 10pm, then midnight, 2am, 4am. Supplementing night feeds with formula otherwise he wakes even more often.

Because he's big I think its a bit easier (bigger tum holding more milk), but would be interested to hear what the other babies are doing?

Mt friend who had a baby on 26 Feb is feeding her every half hour , but she was only just over 6lbs, so her tummy must be smaller.

muppethasakitten · 13/03/2007 14:23

Foxy - Samuel is feeding every 2 - 3 hours during the day - sometimes with little snackettes inbetween - so i feel like i'm on constant food patrol...

however, he is only waking once, sometimes twice in the night so i figure its worth the stockpiling in the day.

On another matter entirely how long have people's lochia's gone on for?

AmieR · 13/03/2007 14:28

Fox - Joe's only just reached the 6lb mark and he feeds pretty much every 2 hours, starting to get to 3 during the night thankfully, and at times he does need little snacks! so, Muppet, I know how you feel!
