what are these wraps you're all going on about?!!

tassis · 26/04/2007 14:40

Cori - wraps are the things that go over cloth nappies (they've come a long way from the plastic pants we used to wear). There are some very cute designs out there, but IMO the ones which work best are a bit dull looking (especially on a girl). And in summer under dresses/skirts there's more scope to see the wrap on a girl!

Coriander73 · 26/04/2007 14:42

Pampers user here

Coriander73 · 26/04/2007 14:44

not to say I don't do my bit in other ways...but yes, I did say that second time around we'd do it & we haven't...crap I know...

BTW, time for a new thread perhaps..??

Ivor · 26/04/2007 15:05

I'm guilty of using disposables too I said we'd do the whole cloth thing but never got my arse into gear.
Those who are trying to save the earth do you just use the terry towel squares and nappy pins under the wraps? Is it easy or an absolute nightmare?
Just the thought of having to deal with the poo and not just discreetly wraping it up and throwing it away, eeeeuuuuwwwww.
Do you have any tips on how not to get poo on your hands, makes me gag....

fairysnuff · 26/04/2007 17:41

LOL
No, I don't use terry squares and I have never had to deal with poo on my hand.
With nappy liners you can dispose of the poo every bit as dicreetly at a disposable nappy. Or you can throw it down the loo and not add to the waste mountain.
I am not a crazy waste warrior or anything by the way
The only difference is that the bag that you put the nappy in gets emptied and the contents washed (if your out and about) or the nappy gets thrown in a pail and a wash goes on every other night.

I just thought I would give it a go, hit upon Fuzzi Bunz and have never looked back.
They are ones that have the wrap included and are as easy to use as disposables. But I use a shaped toweling type thing at night (I won't bamboozle you with names of stuff) so I need a wrap for them.

I think I will just stick to my plain motherease one. Doesn't sound as if I will be any better off with that fleece wrap. And, as it is only for night time wear, I don't think I need to worry about her looking good

mabel1973 · 26/04/2007 20:14

on the re-usables topic, just wondered how people are getting on with re-usables. I have found that whilst they were fine for DS1 as he is a skinny thing, with DS2 because he is really plump and chunky they restrict him quite a bit, his upper legs aren't that long and the nappy nearly comes to his knees and seems to dig into his tummy when he's sitting up, also he has more creases than DS1 had and they seem to get sore quite quickly, so for the time being I am back with disposables, unfortunately. The nappies I have are tots bots.

Centre parcs would be great for a meet up - only 10 minutes from my house!!

We had our 2nd swimming class today, and the pool was freezing. They are refurbishing it and i think the heating had been off for a couple of days. Poor Ds2 had got blue lips by the time we got out!

I have managed to make some meals today for DS2 for the freezer, so we are getting stocked up, I had a piece of salmon and some ricotta cheese, so he has got some meals of pasta with spinach, ricotta and salmon...I quite fancied it myself!

bristols · 26/04/2007 20:25

Got a whole night's sleep last night. Hooray! Lovely. Also did a pg test and it was negative. Hooray again!

Ivor, like Mabel, I use the tots bots nappies. They're fabric, but shaped like a disposable and they have poppers to do them up. I have had poo on my hand on numerous occasions but it doesn't bother me really. I have had many a person's poo on me before (I am a nurse btw ) and I'd rather have DS's body fluids on me any day!

So which centre parcs are we meeting at?? Have never been but am desperate to go.

Had a really lovely afternoon today. DH was off work so we spent time mooching around some shops, sitting outside cafes and just enjoying being a little family. Perfect.

mabel1973 · 26/04/2007 20:32

Bristols - i was assuming Sherwood Forest, however I could be assuming wrongly!

Have got to write instructions for DS2 now as DH is looking after both boys on sat while I have a shopping day in town with my mum! yipeee!

fairysnuff · 26/04/2007 21:01

Could it be cos it is wet against him all the time mabel?
I did not like that idea, that was why I went for the fuzzi bunz. They are fleece lined so the moisture goes through but does not come back onto DD.
Just a thought.
Maybe you could make fleece liners? Would be easy enough, I imagine, cos you don't have to sew anything with fleece, just cut!

Is it sherwood you are meeting?
I have a brother who is based in Nottingham, maybe I could combine a visit with him, with a meet up with you?!
I was half thinking about trying to get down there for a visit this summer anyway. Thoughts were to stay at the sherwood cenre parks and travel from there to see him, and my wee sister in Bath.
My geography is rubbish, is Bath REALLY far away from Nottingham?
It was just pie in the sky though, cos really, I just want DH to take time off so that I can stay at home and do nothing for a week!!
But he wants do DO something...so...?

Marls001 · 26/04/2007 22:09

Hi all -

Bristols - have lived in NYC before; now about as far away culturally as one can get ... I'm in Arkansas.

But I've really enjoyed it.
It's beautiful here, and safe, and the weather is incredible, and we can afford a big house ... [sigh...]

Actually DH offered a promotion today. We have a choice: Houston, or Dallas.

Must move to our city of "choice" by Sept. 30th. Should've known it would be sooner rather than later. Things start happening really fast when he begins asking around.

I am broken up.

I really don't want to go. I don't want to move. No way to stay though.

We've got a sitter for tomorrow night, so we're going to go out, drink a few margaritas, and discuss it further. Houston, or Dallas...

mabel1973 · 27/04/2007 08:28

well all i can say about last night is that DS2 better have a few teeth to show for it! What a nightmare. It was like have a newborn again.
He started at 11.30pm and i didn't get him settled til 1.45am (with the help of medised) then he was awake and crying again at 5am.
He was really sobbing his heart out, he was obviously in a lot of pain. Have been feeding all night to try and soothe him off to sleep so nipples are sore....ouch!

Fairy - whereabouts does your bro live? Bath is a good way from nottingham, I would guess 3 to 4 hours drive.

Marls - did you make a decision? Sorry you're having to leave when you are so settled.

fairysnuff · 27/04/2007 11:53

Haven't a clue Mabel
He was living with his girlfriend in Radcliffe on Trent for years but they moved a few years back to I don't know where, but it was walking distance to Next and Ikea (mum was very pleased when she visited!!). Now they have split up so I have even less clue!!
Sorry

I haven't a clue about either places, Dallas or Houston??
Do you move a lot Marls?
Poor you

DH talks about it now and again, but I don't think it will ever come to anything. Caithness is sooo safe and friendly, he loves it here really
The most I see us moving is maybe 40 miles west to Bettyhill but we are too comfortable being close to stuff so I doubt that will even happen!

Ivor · 27/04/2007 13:55

Thanks for the tips on the reusables, I've had a little surf and am not very confused, need to sit down and have a think, how many would you say you need? There pretty expensive over here, cheapest I've seen on the net is $18 each, do you need extra inserts?
Sorry lots more questions, but I know I'll have to write a justification with pay back period for capital outlay for DH, bloody engineers! Now if it was a new set of golf clubs for him, well different story!

Sorry to hear your on the move Marls the margaritas will help you decide.

Were on the verge of moving, finally got the visas sorted and have been looking for a house. Been in an apartment for nearlly 4 years sooo looking forward to having a garden

Ivor · 27/04/2007 13:56

Oh forgot to say, very about centre parks, if you do go you'll have to have a few drinkies for me

fairysnuff · 27/04/2007 22:23

Thats £9 isn't it?
Is that for fuzzi bunz, with inserts?
Thats a really good price, I paid £11.25 each for mine.
I have 10 and have one wambamboo for night time, but need another that was £8 each plus one wrap at about £5.
So total outlay was, what, about £140 but they shoud now last me until she is, 2ish? depending on when she potty trains fully.
On disposable you spend, what? 4-5 nappys a day, 48 in a pack at £6 a pack. So one pack lasts you about 10 days.
From now until 2 is 1.5 years, which is 545 days, so about 55 packs equals £330.
So you save nearly £200
And if you have another child and reuse them, you save all the money so, £750?

Will that do for DH

Not to mention the factthat I read somewhere that each disposable that you throw away take 200 Years to decompose! I didn't know that and can barely believe it.
Actually can anyone dispute that, I don't want to be caught talking out of my bum

Sorry, sometimes I get carried away when it comes to sums! And my calculations are prob waay out too!!

Ivor · 27/04/2007 22:41

Thanks Fairy, guess it's a bit cheaper over here then.
It's something I want to do, I've just been a lazy cow and done nothing about it!
One last question, when you put the used article into the nappy pail, do you put anything in with the water like a pre-soak?
Thanks

calvemjoe · 28/04/2007 14:47

Yes I was talking about Nottingham Center Parcs. I booked one last night for September and Elizabeths 1st birthday, anyone want to join us?

Fairysnuff, I think you were generous with your sums, we spent over £2000 on nappies for ds, and my reusables cost me £168. That is a much larger saving.

Mabel, Elizabeth has chunky legs and we're finding her nappies too tight around her legs but not tight enough over her tummy. It's managable right now, but if she gets chunkier we're in trouble

Bristols, congrats on your BFN!

Ivor, I have 15 nappies and 4 wraps and I find that very manageable. I have the popilini birth to potty nappy, very similar to motherease, apart from the booster comes included in the price. I chose to have a stay dry layer in them because one of my biggest worries about 'making the change' was that her skin would be wet all the time. I'm very happy to use the nappy in the day without the booster but she needs it in at night. We put Tea Tree oil in the nappy bucket to soak them in, but we've been having the occasional solid poo so it may not be necessary for much longer. HTH.

fairysnuff · 28/04/2007 16:52

Even better

I am able to put my into a dry pail now too. Before though, I used Vanish
I know I probably shouldn't have but it really shifted the BF Poo!!

I have tea tree oil and always intend to put it onto a spare booster, or a cutting of fleece, but never remember!!
But I never have any bother with the smell.
Well, not that I notice!!
No, MIL is up at mo and she didn't say anything

Hmm, not sure about September. DH needs to take a break in July ish.

mrsharrypotter · 29/04/2007 20:37

Hey, it's calvemjoe, I've changed my name as I've been recognised in rl . So this is me now.

Coriander73 · 30/04/2007 11:36
