fairy, broccoli has loads of iron in it. Apparently if you eat foods containing iron at the same time as vitamin C, the vit c helps absorption rates. So brocolli and oranges it is then!! Seriously, don't worry.

Cori, has J switched over to the blue Hipp Organic yet? and if so how is it going down? I've nearly run out of the pink box one so will probably buy the blue one next time I go to the shops.

clairemow · 22/03/2007 13:47

myrtle, F has changed to the 6 month plus extra iron formula - we're using Aptimil. He noticed precisely no difference whatsoever!

Myrtle, about to open a blue box this evening!!! When we switched DD over I don't think anybody could really tell the diffrerence but personally I think it's good idea seeing as they are enriched with iron etc etc..

J very difficult today. Very miserable, chumping on his gums...& hey he didn't like parsnip with carrot either. So in sheer desperation (good grief, it's only been a week!) I gave him a rice cake...& voila he ate the lot! What does that tell me? He did gag & throw up at first but I left him with it & he swallowed & looked quite chuffed with himself. I also ( gave him two tiny mouthfuls of DD's ....whisper....petit filous....suffice to say he could have had the entire pot..

compo · 22/03/2007 15:54

Cori - my dd is on a petit filous a day now She is slowly getting the hang of solids - she likes carrot and sweet potato at the moment. I ahve to confess though that I'm giving her one homemade meal a day, one jar at teatime and weetabix and fruit for breakfast. Just don't have time to do loads of home cooking. Think it will e better when she's eating toast and sandwiches like ds at teatime so they can have the same food.

clairemow · 22/03/2007 16:36

Ssshhhh, F has had petit filous too ... but I did buy some fruit jumble organic things yesterday with probiotics in Waitrose (where else?!). So will assuage my guilt with them!! I'm trying really hard not to do any jars, as I still feel guilty about giving up bf earlier than I'd hoped. He has a lot of banana for tea...!!!!

Good, I will get the next stage on formula tomorrow. Hopefully he won't notice.

Does anyone else's LO sufer with a sticky eye. DS has had it since birth and we bathe with cool bolied water but it never seems to go away. Not sure what else to try. DR always says cool boiled water..

JingleBelle · 22/03/2007 19:10

Myrtle - just time for a quick post. I read in a parenting magazine somewhere about alternative remedies that they suggest bathing in camomile tea for sticky eye (not sure how the camomile will help, as that will be the only difference from your current cbw, but it might be worth a try). I have some here ... if only the internet could be developed so we could send solid items via it in a flash! HTH.

clairemow · 22/03/2007 19:15

F had a sticky eye a while back. Dr said cooled boiled water but also breast milk - I can't remember if you're still doing any bf Myrtle, but a squirt of that has healing qualities according to my GP!

OP posts:
Myrtle1 · 22/03/2007 19:52

Thanks for tips for sticky eye.
Claire, my cousin's Turkish MIL suggested breastmilk and I always forget to express some off and I'm hardly bf at all now but I spent many a time trying to aim it in his eye while bf but always managed to get it all over his face but not in his eye!!

Jingle - the Camomile sounds like a good idea and I have plenty as I drink it so I will try that later when he wakes for a feed. Thanks

Coriander73 · 22/03/2007 20:52

Myrtle, camomile tea works a treat! I used it with both DD & J - old Spanish wives tale apparently....having said that I did also use breastmilk with DD when she was newborn & that worked too......doctors are always so happy to dish out eye drops.....

mabel1973 · 23/03/2007 18:52

Hi all, not been around for a while...i'been enjoying my new found freedom and getting out and about in the car!

Cori - I am sorry o hear about your work, I understand how you feel, I hope you have some joy with your lawyers, I someimes wish I'd gone down tha route wih my ex-empolyer, but it's not really what you need when you've got babies to look after is it - best of luck.

On the tap water thing it says in my red book that tap water is ok from 6 months. I have packed our cold water steriliser away now and am jus washing spoons and bowls in hot water. He doesn't have a dummy and I have abandoned expressing now, in favour of using formula if I need to add milk to anything, although Isn't cows milk ok in food now, jus not as a drink?
I have started making 'meals' for ds now, I got some tiny little pasta stars, which I have cooked with cheese sauce and broccoli and he's also tried cous cous with various veg, it gets absolutely everywhere though!
We are not onto the petit filous just yet, I buy myself a big tub of Yeo Valley organic yogurt, so we have a spoonful for mummy and a spoonful for DS - yum!

Have just found out one of my closest friends who is 12 weeks pg, looks like the baby may have a chromosonal abnormality, she has had a nuechal scan yeserday and is having a CVS in 10 days time, I really hope it is all ok for her...they have told her it is about an 80% chance it will be ok, so reasonably good odds i guess.

bristols · 24/03/2007 13:57

Mabel- fingers crossed for your friend. A friend of mine was pg with twins. At about 26 weeks they noticed that one wasn't growing properly. Did amnio etc and told her chances were that baby was v poorly. Told her the sex and to choose a name etc. Discussed rescucitation after birth and so on. Babies were born a few weeks ago (about 35 weeks iirc) and both FINE!! It was a dreadful time with such a wonderful outcome. I hope the same happens for your friend. Its such a shame to have all this worry.

On the subject of cow's milk, you're right, its fine for cooking from six months onwards.

Everything's fine with us. Went to see the nursery at my place of work yesterday. DS's name is down and I'm not due to go beck to work until August, but they can't guarantee a place. Just as well because I hated it! I'm really thrown now because I just assumed that it would be fine and that it was all sorted. Felt quite tearful yesterday afternoon. Was even considering giving up work all together to look after him myself! I haven't seen any others so we're going to have a look round and see how they compare. The problem is that I won't be able to work set days but different days each week with no pattern. I hope I can find somewhere that is that flexible.

On the positive side, DS is still loving his food. Long may it continue.

I did a pg test yesterday DH and I can't remember any accidents but I still haven't had a period since DS. Stopped bf 10 weeks ago so I thought it would have arrived by now. Hmmmmmm

bristols · 24/03/2007 13:58

Test was negative, btw. Phew!

clairemow · 24/03/2007 14:24

only a quick one - Bristols, don't worry about the return of the period! After DS1 (bfed for 6 months) it didn't return for AGES. After DS2 (4 months) it still took over 2 months to come back. After I stopped the pill years ago, it took 9 months, and after the depo injection, 8 months. So anything can be normal.

Took the boys swimming this morning. Had a great time, F was so knackered that after he had his lunch I took him up for a nap, and he had shut his eyes and was snoring before I even got the sleeping bag done up! He's still snoring away now, nearly 2 hours later. That must be the way to get them to sleep...!!!

compo · 24/03/2007 20:05

Hi everyone.
Mabel - when you say you have packed away the steriliser does that mean you're not sterilsing bottles when giving formula? Or are you breastfeeding? [confused emoticon needed!).
We're still sterilising bottles here although I have read many a thread on here (usually featuring RTKanga) saying that there is no need.

tassis · 24/03/2007 20:33

Jingle - sorry to hear about your work situation. Hope your ds is settling well with the childminder

Cori - how's weaning now?

Myrtle - hope nursery continues to go well for your ds...we used EBM for sticky eye which worked for ds but got a presciption for dd which zapped it in no time. is the chamomile tea working?

Mabel - sorry to hear about your friend's LO. Hope they're OK.

bristols - rubbish about nursery. hope you're OK and get something sorted soon.

claire - well done for taking boys swimming. I keep wondered about taking dd while ds has his swimming lesson, or while he's at nursery but it's not happening. Hopefully we'll go en famille next Sat. We've not been since on holiday in January and both loved it.

Things are good here. Weaning's going great. Dd seems to polish off great amounts. Had roast chicken dinner tonight (first meat).

She's still not sitting but does enjoy "tummy time" and if you lie her on the floor she manages to migrate across the room by kicking backwards.

I tried her in the same room as ds last night which was very cute until she woke at 5.15 and wanted to play with him!

Hope everyone's having a nice weekend.

mabel1973 · 25/03/2007 08:34

morning!

well i decided last night to bite the bullet and drop the 10.30pm feed altogether.....he woke a 2.10am - arrrggghhh!
I have decided that today I am going to really feed him up, DS1 had dropped that feed by 4 monhs, so I am sure ds2 could manage without it a 6 months.

The 10.30pm feed was formula, so i thought maybe if i gave him a large bottle of formula a 7 instead it would see him through....but obviously not!

Compo - I am only doing 1 formula feed a day and we have bottles from mothercare where you put some water in the cap, invert them and pop them in the micrwave for 1.5 mins, so no need for a steriliser, they are great, especially when you are going away.

Coriander73 · 25/03/2007 09:57

Oh Mabel....don't know what to suggest..perhaps as you say try & feed him up & given him lots of milk so he's full Understand your frustration..DD dropped that feed at 5 months & J dropped it last week.

tassis, weaning...what a continued nightmare! Tried courgette & sweet pot yday but wouldn't take it. This morning made some apple for breakfast (figured that I should try & introduce another meal even though lunch isn't exactly a roving success given he's 27 weeks plus) but wouldn't eat that. DD was having a pf so I took the plunge again & offered him some...he ate it all. Arggggghhhhh. Really don't know what to do at lunch...he did eat a rice cake yday as he didn't waant anything else but it's incredibly frustrating & getting me down. It doesn't help that DD loved everything that was offered so I can't quite understand it!!!! Please, any advice or words of encouragement.

bristols, sorry to hear that. All I would say is that it just wasn't the one for you. Keep on looking & I'm sure you will find a nursery that suits you all. Our nursery has been flexible as although DD has 3 days a week they are different (due to DH's hours) but they were fine. Don't be put off as you just haven't found the one that feels right...& it is out there.... Phew re pg test!! Don't worry about af. My first one took 8 weeks after I'd stopped BF J to come back...& as we speak I'm currently with the 2nd which was 3 days early...not really a problem but when you are 28 days like clockwork & you think your ov. on day 14...

J sitting up really well now but hates, really hates, being on his tummy! What can I do?

compo · 25/03/2007 19:14

Corinader - your ds sounds like my dd. However this week we realy seem to have turned a corner and she actually opens her mouth for food now, whereas before she was just turning the other cheek as it were.
She had avocado and banana yesterday and loved it. Only thing I have noticed is that some days she doesn't poo and the next she poos at every nappy change so today she has a very sore bum. Anyone else found this?
Hope the clock change isn't upsetting anyone's routine...

Coriander73 · 26/03/2007 21:54

Wow...where is everyone today?!!

I went to see the lawyer this morning. She didn't really say that much other than she has to look at all my paperwork etc etc & will let me know tm if we can proceed. Can you believe that a senior colleague of mine has been asked to keep tabs on me when I return?! The colleague rang my other colleague (v. good friend also) - who is also on m/l - to let me know. I feel really upset as what on earth do they think I'm going to do? Yes, I'm really peeved with it all but I'm still professional enough to get on with me job whilst I cover my notice period -which is what it's going to come too.........

Had J weighed today...he's lost weight for the first time ever! Told her about his lack of enthusiasm for food etc & she said try blw (!!!!) & stay cool....??!!!!!

tassis · 26/03/2007 21:58

going to bed, but wow Cori your HV knew about BLW...i was convinced it only existed on MN and not in RL!

sorry not to be able to suggest anythng positive - great that he likes PF, have you tried "lacing" other food with it?

Coriander73 · 26/03/2007 23:15

btw, can anyone recommend a blow up travel bed that we buy for DD? Have seen those Winnie the Pooh ones but they don't seem to have a long shelf life but we have a few weekend trips coming & as J is now in the travel cot we need an alternative for 2.5yr DD!! Any suggestions welcome.

Myrtle1 · 27/03/2007 08:49

Cori - Can't believe your work are keeping tabs on you! Do they know you have gone to see the lawyer? I hope it all works out for you.
Ned lost weight last week too but I think it was because he'd been ill. He's back to his best now
He loves pf too. I did butternut squash and apple puree the other day and that seemed to go down very well so maybe you could try J on that? Sorry, I'm not sure what else to suggest.

Can I ask what everyone does at mealtimes now. Do you give milk and then solids straight after or do you leave a bit of gap now between liquid feeds and solids? Sometimes I think I stuff Ned and should give him a break in between.

clairemow · 27/03/2007 09:47

Cori, for you at your work place.. Keep an eye on you?! Good lord!

Also, friends of ours have a great travel blow up bed with sleeping bag attached (can't fall out) - I think they got it in Argos. Their 5 year old still uses it and our DS1 has slept in it too at their house. It's longer than most of the ones you can get. It's a "Groovy Chick" one.

about J's (non) eating. Your HV sounds quite switched on though. Is she a MNer?!!!? I've tried giving F some finger foods and soft veg, but he just squishes it, grins at me and opens his mouth like a bird for the spoon. Think I have programmed him to expect to be fed, so he can't be bothered??!! BTW, what's PF?

Well, F has grown 3 teeth this week. He now has both bottom middle, both top middle and one of the eye teeth. At this age, DS1 had no teeth at all! But poor thing has been a bit snotty, sore bottom and tetchy in the afternoons with it all. A bit of medised does wonders for helping him drop off to sleep though....

Myrtle, F now has a 7oz bottle when he wakes (usually bet. 7/7.30), and breakfast half an hour to an hour later, lunch (4 oz bottle and solids) at about 11.30/12 - he has the bottle as a drink with the solids - a 7 oz bottle around 2.30/3, solids at 5 with DS1 (trying to get him to drink some water here too!! - failing so far!!!) and a 7-8 oz bottle at bedtime. We're working towards him and DS1 having meals at the same time. The other day I achieved us all having lunch together - major excitement in the CMow house!
