Congrats Spina - looking forward to reading all about Tom!

My SIL has used Gripe Water from 1 month - which Dylan will be next Tuesday - OMG where does the time go? I think it;s just every other type of medicine that is from 3 months.

Having said that though SIL was also told by her GP that this is just the makers covering their rears in case of proba, and she was told to use calpol before DN was 3 months. Also you can use calpol or similar afer 8 weeks jabs. My GP also said using Olbas Oil was okay for DS to help him breathe, athough it's been used sparingly and only when really needed.

Jabber - DS got fed up of sucking when latched on as there was nothing there, and I was pumping like a cow in a dairy farm after he had had a go and still only produced an oz after an hour. I think it's me rather than technique, but whenever I see there's some available it's gets expressed and fed to him - DH calls it the gourmet stuff. Besides, DS is completely dumfounded now as to what to do with my boobs! Am really quite sad about it - I wanted to BF for mutual benefits to DS and me. Having lost mum to breast cancer I was really keen for t work.

BaileysMilkshake · 04/01/2007 07:23

Also meant to add hungrier baby formula does not seem to be satisfying my guzzler as much as it did his sister! It lets him go 4-5 hours after first bottle at 10pm, but when he has his second bottle at 2 or 3 am it only lasts him 3 hours - whats that about. HV is coming again today - will ak her opinion. Appreciate I should not be complaining as 4-5 hours is real gift for the sleep deprived.

jabberwocky · 04/01/2007 09:03

Aww, baileys, I'm sorry

It didn't work for me with ds1 so I know how you feel. I guess I was just lucky that I could express. Do you use a double electriic? I think as long as you are getting anything at all there's still a chance of building up your supply.

Calmriver · 04/01/2007 09:36

gripwater can be used from 1 month!!! I used infacol, but gripewater is great and ive swapped to it now!

anyone else's baby up for a 4-5 hour stretch in the evening?

DD is nearly 4 weeks old. Routine pretty good in the day as is feeding about every 3 hours ie up for 1 hour, asleep for 2 then wakes for feed. In the evening though she just has amazing stamina. Grazes all evening until I'm exhausted.

Any tips welcome...

Calmriver · 04/01/2007 09:44

Have your liitle ones started smiling yet!? My dd1 did from 4 weeks, but dd2 is 6 weeks tmw and nothing yet!...oh well! Will keep trying,x

for those of you with 2 now! Doesnt it make having one seem like a breeze! It takes such stress getting out of the flat in th mornings!

mishelfish, DD2 had a slight tongue tie & latched on okay but slipped off alot hence agonising nips etc. She had it snipped at 1 week. I would recommend it because if you leave it until they are older (can possibly cause speech problems) they have to have a general. I left the room when it was done but she didn't even whimper. It cost us £60 privately as there was no NHS option for at least 3 months. HTH

Saw GP yesterday about possible reflux. She thinks DD2 doesn't have it and to be honest, so do I. I just really worry that she might be suffering. Apparently DD2 is just very alert (as were my other two) and - YES Eli - they do start to settle after 6 weeks. GP's words "just when you think it can't get any worse, it starts to improve". My other 2 didn't have colic so maybe this is what DD2 has as she is very fidgety in the evenings, feeding, squirming, crying & then finally falls asleep between 9-11pm and sleeps peacefully - last night until 5am!!!!!!!!!!

You can use gripe water from 1 month and I think it's the best thing. Personally I find "colief" & "infacol" pretty rubbish. Can recommend the Baby Bliss book if anyone is struggling. Even for a 3rd timer like me it was helpful.

DS started full days at school today. Sob. That explains the long ramble in case anyone is wondering ...

castlesintheair · 04/01/2007 10:07

Calm, yes DD2 started smiling about a week or so ago. Makes all those sleepless nights worthwhile doesn't it? That and their angel breath & face nuzzling. I love it

castlesintheair · 04/01/2007 10:09

Congratulations Spina! Welcome to the world little Tom.

satinshoes · 04/01/2007 10:22

thanks calm, glad its not just me

BaileysMilkshake · 04/01/2007 12:07

DS is smiling he especally likes to smile at his big sister! And when you tickle his cheeks and under his chin. And he likes to spend time on his baby gym and rattle the chimes which seem to be his favs.

His cold - typically after me posting it was going, seems to be making him sound a bit rattley and raspy today, but again a lot is to do with his larynx....I think. But will check with HV today He bought up a fair bit of milk this mroning with some gunk from the back of his throat - so will see how next feed goes.

satinshoes · 04/01/2007 12:20

i take back what i said about day routine. DD is so knackered after her marathon last night she can hardly keep her eyes open but is waking every 90 mins for a quick 10 min feed ??!!??

BaileysMilkshake · 04/01/2007 12:23

DS has just started fussing for food after 2and a hlaf hours - probably becuse he bought up a bit earlier. Then again he also went 4 hours this morning, on top of the 5 last night so is probably a bit down on his reserves. Typical with the HV coming, I'll feed him, she'll weigh him and then he'll be sick as I get him dressed again!

accessorizechristmas · 04/01/2007 12:40

Congrats spina, can't wait to hear how it went..
I'm using gripe water (started at 3 weeks) & it's good but I've come to the conclusion that it's the diet coke & choc that's giving him wind so I must give them up! Drat, but he's been getting worse & worse last couple of days.
DP says he got a huge smile last night (ds2 was 4 weeks exactly yesterday). can't wait for mine now!

I'm most relieved to hear that grazing all night perfectly normal as thought I was doing something wrong (or ds2 was) and getting quite frustrated with it. We generally get a 3-4 hour stint in the middle of the night. What's surprising me is his midday nap is bang on every day 11ish for 3 hours. I'm sure this routine can't last!

Calmriver · 04/01/2007 18:05

Hi All, Weirdbird had little Hannah yesterday lunchtime! She weighed 9lbs 9!
Weirdbird sounds good and will post later with pictures!!!

Elibean · 04/01/2007 18:35

Ooooh, good to read that it does get better after about six weeks, thanks Castle. Started with the gripe water - she seems to like it (as opposed to Infacol, which she spits out with a grimace that implies I've just fed her arsenic) and it did calm her a bit. Haven't had any positive effect from Infacol or Colief, unfortunately, and the dummy didn't work last night either: holding on to gripe water and time!

dd2 grazes in the evening, and during the night she has very short (five to ten minutes) feeds and goes straight back to sleep now - whereas pre-hospital, she took AGES. Six weeks tomorrow, changing so fast...and yes, first smile was last Saturday, shortly after they took the last tube out

Not too many during colic hours though..

Elibean · 04/01/2007 18:35

And congrats to Weirdbird! Welcome Hannah...love the name...

bewilderbeast · 04/01/2007 18:52

Welcome Hannah and Tom and congrats to Weirdbird and Spina.

Thanks to all for the gripe water clarification I'm going to go right out and get some tomorrow and infacol does not work well enough on the maximum dose and often makes him throw up.

HayleyWayley · 04/01/2007 19:14

its nice to know im not the only one with a colicky baby! i brought some infacol today havent tried it yet! Gripe water i cant use til next week when hes 4 weeks old!

heres a question for u all...how often do ur babies poo? sorry but charlie isnt doing it as umch now..bout every 2 days, n it used to be 3 times a day!

Calmriver · 04/01/2007 19:25

My dd1-purely bf'd went 11 days without a poo!!!! I was up at Casualty thinking there was something seriously wrong with her, but apparantly bf'd babies can go 10 days around without anything as their milk is so good and used up by them...there is no gunk in it!

I used to use a tiny amt of prune juice when I got really worried...obviously VERY dilute! You can also give them a bit of cooled boiled water to drink from 4 weeks!

OOOH

Elibean...were 6 weeks tomorrow too!!! Amberli is 6lbs 8 now!!!Whats the weight like on your side???

HayleyWayley · 04/01/2007 20:19

thanks hun thats made me feel abit better xx

BaileysMilkshake · 04/01/2007 20:56

Hi All,

Saw HV today and Dylan now weighs 10lb 4.5oz, which is a gain of 2lb 3oz in 16 days!! But he is still on his line so the HV was really pleased.

Dylan has been occasionally having cooled boiled water from 3 weeks and no harm and with HV seal of approval. But he has been a bit constipated and now mummy and baby have a little saw point in common So we'll be making sure the water is offered more regularly from now on.

Found out from MIl tonight that SIL DC (3mnths) is on 9oz per feed DH read the formula tin and it only goes up to 8oz per feed - which is from 6 mnths plus!! Someone commented how MIL has probably got it worng as she so often does, but then again my SIL has said baby is is 6-9 mnth clothes (for length apparently)

BaileysMilkshake · 04/01/2007 20:57

Sorry 'sore point', not 'saw point' !

babypowder · 04/01/2007 22:48

Congratulations WB and Spina!!

LO is off for prolonged jaundice screening tomorrow. I keep telling myself and DH that its breastmilk jaundice - nothing to worry about - but inside I'm bricking it . I'm trying everything to get the bilirubin out - leaving her in the window for naps, long walks in the sunshine, everytime she opens her mouth I shove a nipple into it - but she still looks like Dale Winton.
I just need a good slap, I think
