hullo all
ds2 has finally learnt day from night, yay! Slept 9-2 but of course I couldn't relax and didn't sleep until midnight like an idiot. Swaddling is making huge difference, can't believe how well he settles, must go out and buy more cheap sheets to wrap him in...it's just vaguely coming back to me that I made amazing discovery on swaddling with ds1 at about the same age (4 wks). derrr.
I'm tempted to chuck ds2 out as well, castles, constant grunting driving me crazy, I only lasted 4 weeks with ds1. Whatever helps you and them sleep better. I also miss my dp quite a bit, we're sneaking off to his 'room' for cuddles late at night and first thing in the morning!
Lucy, I used to smother ds1's head with olive oil night before, then give him a bath in the morning & cradle cap gone within a few days (just put muslin under his head).

BaileysMilkshake · 02/01/2007 19:52

Hi All,

Castles, DS has been diagnosed with a floppy larynx. When he really cries hard he grunts with every intake of breath. Also when he is fusing or fidgety he sounds really horse. I have been told it's nothing to worry about as becuse as the child grows it sorts itself out.

HV said she had know hundreds of cases but only one where an operation was needed. Still not nice to listen too though!

jabberwocky · 03/01/2007 04:14

Well, after about 24 hours of seemingly constant nursing I tried to introduce a bottle today with limited success. I was just beginning to think I was over the hump with bfing soreness and now my nipples feel awful. HAve put on gel pads and did the cold pack thing again today which really helps.

tbh, I'm not that upset that ds2 didn't take immediately to the bottle. Ds1 did and then immediately preferred it to me so I guess we will try it off and on over the next 3 weeks. Dh mentioned trying regular bottle nipples (we have the special non-confusing type) like we used on ds1 adn I almost melted him with a look! I haven't suffered this long to have it all go pear shaped now. grrrr

aq, I must try swaddling again. I did it at first with then he seemed to not do so well with it but it's definitely worth another try. Now that he's a bit bigger he might fit into the swaddle sleep sack I bought. Seems like ages ago that I got it.

castlesintheair · 03/01/2007 08:17

Hi all, thanks for advice about floppy layynx & sleeping arrangements. I'm pretty sure DD2 doesn't have it, she's just a bit noisy & grunty. Apparently one of her cousins is the same. Finally at 16 months my SIL has managed to switch off from it. DD2 was woken by DH's snoring this morning at 5am so maybe I should just leave them both to it!!

AQ, I read the Baby Bliss book that someone recommended & he goes on about swaddling. I must give it a try. DD2 still wakes every 3 hours through the night & then eats very little so it must be a habit now which I have to break. [Stern mummy emoticon] She weighs 10lbs now (4.5kg). My night nanny said at 11lbs they are "capable" of sleeping through the night

Tomorrow is C-day for me ... back to the school run. Packed lunches to to do too. Oh help!

mishelfish · 03/01/2007 09:25

hi , have just read this thread, my little boy, 9 days old, is incredibly noisy sleeper too, scared me so much i called the dr the other night! he squeaks and grunts an whimpers for hours at no apparent discomfort to himself. just me who lies there listening all night!

he also has a slight tongue-tie, castles, was wondering about getting it snipped and whether it makes a difference and what is involved, i had a problem getting him latched on (am bf) but is ok now, nipples very sore but thats normal?

happy new year to everyone !

bewilderbeast · 03/01/2007 13:15

Jabber, thanks for the invite, I've sort of been hovering between this thread and the October thread it feels odd I sort of don't know where I belong now. It seemed weird to post on the due december thread when DS was already here but the October babies are all doing more than he can so we're a bit out of place there too. Had an almost completely sleepless night which DS is now sleeping off but no such luck for me as I have my parents dog to look after and she is being miserable and needy. Joy

HayleyWayley · 03/01/2007 14:22

hi anyones bsbys got really smelly farts? i mean charlies smell of eggs...ewwww!!!

bewilderbeast · 03/01/2007 16:33

Hayley, DS stinks so bad I want to vomit sometimes, he has tremendous wind but he is quite colicky

HayleyWayley · 03/01/2007 18:07

yes charlie has colic i think..been constant all day. and smelly farts!
i read somewhere that it can be due to what i eat..caffeine, dairy, brocoli, cabbage n cauliflower...i dont think i could cut all that out my diet so tempted to go onto bottle but i feel i will let my son down i wanna give him the best!
I know bottle fed babies get colic too, but im just a bit fed up with havin to watch what i eat n drink, when i did that all thru my pregnaNCY.. does that sound selfish to anyone?

Elibean · 03/01/2007 18:10

Happy New Year, belatedly, all

Noisy sleepers: Mischa squeaks, rattles and grunts all night long. And when she's feeding. No one thought it was floppy larynx, particularly, until she was in with the bronchiolitis - at which point all the paediatricians jumped on the squeaks/grunts and said it was. Apparenlty its posh name is laryngomalachia, though I have no idea how to spell it?!

As Jabber says, they grow out of it - nothing to worry about 99% of the time, though babies who have it are more likely to have complications when they catch colds and respiratory tract infections under a year old. No kidding

Castles, dd2 doesn't vomit or spit up much at all - except when she was coming down with the bronch. - so not sure if its linked necessarily to reflux? Mind you, dd1 almost certainly had reflux (she did much, much better with feeding once on solids) and never spit up at all - it can happen. And three hours of broken sleep is no fun - I have had several like that while M was in hospital. I hope it gets better soon, and if not - why not try the Ranitidine? Any reason not to? I bet even dd2 would like to sleep longer stretches

All fairly normal but exhausted here, its my turn to have the cough and sore throat, and I'm ploughing through a sort of post-adrenalin depression of a mild sort...today dh and I managed to get time together to tell each other what last week was like for each of us: that helped, its amazing how we can co-parent quite well without funcioning as a couple for days and days on end!

Elibean · 03/01/2007 18:13

Oh, forgot....colic: UGH! Mischa has it, starts every evening around 5 or 6 pm feed, and goes on till she settles for the night at anything between 9pm and 11pm. I hate feeling so powerless to help

The only thing that does is a dummy (could be me, but my nipples will fall off if I don't substitute something) which the hospital got her to take whilst on HDU, to calm her when she wasn't allowed to feed. For some reason, sucking on that really does seem to ease her colic, or her panic about it, not sure which

Didn't realize colic made for smelly farts, thats very reassuring: was beginning to think she'd caught some other horrible mystery bug

jabberwocky · 03/01/2007 18:58

Eli, ds2 doesn't have colic, thank goodness, but does like to nurse a lot. I know what you mean about nipples falling off! I got this wonderful wrap, the Storchenwiege. It applies pressure evenly unlike the slings and ds2 will snooze comfortably for hours in it. I think he feels a bit more secure being snugged up against me more than he is in a sling. It, of something similar, may help with the colicky times. Have you tried gripewater? I didn't use it with ds1 but it has really helped when ds2 gets fussy.

jabberwocky · 03/01/2007 19:00

PS

Welcome BWB! I delivered in November but couldn't imagine posting with another group. I figured we started out together and should see it through together

Calmriver · 03/01/2007 19:44

Hi Guys, yes!!! Eggy farts! Amberli has had the same really. I am supposed to be tidying up my flat, but it's nice just to have 5 mins to myself! DD1 and DD2 slept in our bed last night, BUT we all got some sleep!!!

Anyone else thinking of shaving their babies heads? I have been told their hair grows back nice and thick. Im in 2 minds as I think baldies are really cute and they stay looking like babies for longer, but a bit of hair would also be quite nice!

What do you think?

Oh, anyone else got ONE big boob and one small one!???

OP posts:
jabberwocky · 03/01/2007 20:36

Deffo one big boob and one small one here. I keep thinking it will even out as he takes the right side more but it actually seems to be getting worse!

AQ, I think the swaddling helped last night. Thanks for mentioning it.

HayleyWayley · 03/01/2007 21:58

charlie has lots of hair as it is, i couldnt bring myself to shave it LOL

i think i will try gripe water for colic, apparntly it works wonders!

BaileysMilkshake · 03/01/2007 22:04

Hi All,

DS is just getting over a cold - the floppy larynx thing doesnt seem to have affected him....(I hope). The cold has lasted about a week. Saline drops given when he has a snuffly nose and cooled boiled water to drink when he's had a bit of a cough.

My milk seems to continue coming in dribs and drabs, considering DS is 22 days old today an ounce a day is hardly sufficient for him - he's had up to 5oz's a time in the lat couple of days. Although bought a lot back so we dropped it back down to 4oz which he takes all of and brings less up. Eyes bigger than belly syndrome!

He gets weighed again tomorrow which should be interesting.

last night was another bad one as he refused to go to sleep after the 2am feed and lay in his basket fussing - which with hi FL meant DH and I just lay there wide awake. Being that we have agreed I will do night feeds when DH goes back to work I bought him back down stairs and spent an hour and a half watching crap TV!

bewilderbeast · 03/01/2007 22:10

Hayley, I think gripe water can't be used until they are 3 months. We've been using infacol although I'm not too sure how effective its been. To be honest the best thing we've found is a vibrating chair soothes and clears the wind all at the same time.

HayleyWayley · 03/01/2007 22:41

he has a vibrating chair actually, didnt realise it can help with colic! thanks will definatly try that!
im off to bed now to get a few hrs b4 df brings charlie up at 1am..dont want him to go back to work on the 10th jan, coz then he wont be able to stay up til 1 , i will have to bloody do it LOL

spina · 03/01/2007 23:05

i've received my ticket to join you all in the 3.8kg shape of my son born on new years day. will be writing a birth annoucement once i've sorted one handed typing while b/fing.

he's called Tom and he's delicious.

Elibean · 03/01/2007 23:06

Yes to one bigger boob than the other!

Dreadful, dreadful colic tonight...she doesn't cry all that much, just writhes in agony, makes pitiful mewling noises and breathes very fast (which, after last week, is guaranteed to worry me of course). She also wants to feed nonstop...but struggles to breathe and stay latched on through the spasms

Ah well, six weeks on Friday - supposed to be the peak of it, isn't it? Please say yes someone?!?

Got swing, dummy, tried bicycling legs, eveyr position going, massaging tummy, all to no avail. Am tempted to try gripe water tomorrow - think its after a month here, no? Or is it three?

Elibean · 03/01/2007 23:06

Spina, x post, congratulations!!!

And welcome Tom, I bet you're gorgeous

northernmama · 04/01/2007 00:03

Happy New Year everyone!! I've been offline for a number of days now, because what started out as a wonderful baby experience disintegrated into some crappy form of hell after Christmas.

Kirsten seems to have completely forgotten how to latch onto the boob... so have had a number of days of frustration trying to get her nursing properly... lots of public health nurses in with many different opinions on what to do, and how... to no avail until yesterday an angel gave me a tip and voila, seem to be back on the road to bfing again. Scary as she got owfully sleepy and then would be starving and then it took so long to latch her that often she'd get too tired to nurse...

Eli - glad to hear that Mischa is home and doing well!!! Have thought a lot about you over the holidays.

Mardy - my prayers are with you and your family as you deal with whatever happens with Hester. I hope for the best sweetie!

Mismatched boobs are my specialty right now!!! Whole cup size difference at times! And sore!!! sore seems like a wimpy description of how sore they are!!

Will try to catch up on posts and get into a discussion later today or tomorrow!!!

Glad to see everyone posting!

jabberwocky · 04/01/2007 05:12

Congratluations spina! Only a few more to go

The Baby's Bliss gripewater we have over here can be used from birth. There is a dosage chart where you can increase with age. I didn't get it until ds was 5 weeks and we;re still using the newborn dosage which is working fine.

Baileys, sometimes you will get less with the pump than when nursing. Does he latch on ever? What kind of pump are you using? Do you do breast compression? I pumped a lot w/ ds1 so perhaps could help you keep going.

Mardy, still thinking of you and hoping for the best.

jabberwocky · 04/01/2007 05:13

Northern, congrats on persevering. It sounds like possibly a nursing strike? I've heard of it but not experienced it (yet!).
