My Birth Story

I was planning for a normal (hopefully spontaneous) vaginal birth right until Monday 13th April. The night before, my feet had started to swell and get hot, so I checked my BP and it was raised (slightly by standard, but a lot by my "normal"). On the Monday, my BP continued to increase and by early evening I'd developed a headache with visual disturbances. I called the antenatal ward who told me to come in for a check.

When I arrived, they checked my BP, agreed it was borderline high, but high for me. (My normal is 100/60 and it was reading about 140/90) and they also checked my urine to discover "trace" of protein. The MW felt baby, said he wasn't yet engaged, and hooked me up to the CTG. They took some bloods and the consultant came to see me. She decided she wanted to feel baby for herself, and discovered the bum the MW had felt was in fact a head! She confirmed this with the mobile scanner.

It was decided that I would come back in 2 days, on the Wednesday, and attempt an ECV. In the meantime, I had a MW appt on the Tuesday that I was instructed to go to so they could continue to monitor my BP and protein levels. At the appt the following day, my BP was still reading around 140/90 but protein had increased to +. The MW called the hospital who said it was fine to wait until my ECV appt the following morning for further monitoring. I was instructed to take my hospital bags incase anything went drastically wrong with the ECV.

Arrived at antenatal clinic at 9am on Wednesday 15th. They scanned to confirm baby was still breech, then took me up to the delivery suite for the ECV. They did their obs and this time my protein was +++. Normally they wouldn't attempt an ECV on a pre-eclamptic woman, but for some reason, after much deliberation, they decided to give it a go. This was around 2pm. They injected me with Terbutaline to relax the uterine muscles and the consultant used her very boney fingers to attempt to manually turn him. 3 attempts were unsuccessful, he didn't even move a centimetre :( Uncomfortable is an understatement at describing ECV. Painful is a better word, at best haha. At this stage, they were waiting on blood work and hadn't decided what they were going to do with me yet. But it was confirmed that I would need an ELCS sooner rather than later (as I was now 38+6). Finally at 5pm they came in to tell me I was being admitted due to pre-eclampsia and I would deliver the baby by section on Friday morning.

DH was told to arrive by 9am on Friday morning. When he got there I'd already showered and been cannulated. We were told the intention was to have the baby here by 10am but unfortunately there were a number of emergencies in theatre. I ended up being given IV fluids as the delay was just too long to leave me with hydration. Finally at about 2:20pm theatre staff arrived to tell us they were ready. Cue nerves! :D

I walked up to theatre, with DH and he was led to a room to scrub up. I was taken into theatre and told to sit on the edge of the bed, bent over. They sprayed my back and inserted the spinal. It was completely painless and took effect pretty quickly. They laid be down and the anaesthetist instructed me to tell her if I felt nauseous, as I would be aware of my BP dropping before she was. DH was brought in and the procedure begun. My BP dropped a couple of times during the procedure, I felt instantly nauseous, but as soon as the anaesthetist put something in my cannula to raise it again, I felt better. I also had a moment where my heart rate dropped and I felt like I was floating away. DH says my heart rate was around 40..the second anaesthetist was almost yelling "push atropine!" and when anaesthetist #1 did this, I felt instantly better! Magic! Myles was born at 3:13pm and his cry was the most beautiful sound I've ever heard! The paediatrician checked him over for about 10 minutes and he was brought to me via DH. It took about 40 minutes to stitch me back up, in which time we gazed at our son in awe.

I was allowed to recover in the theatre since there was no one in after me, so DH and baby could stay with me. We started skin to skin and continued this all the way back to the postnatal ward.

I spent the rest of that day in bed since I was still fairly numb and catheterised. I wasn't in any pain though, as they'd given me some medication rectally in theatre. I'd also had diamorphine in the spinal, which unfortunately made me vomit an entire cup of tea. :( I was given an anti-emetic to help with this which worked a treat!

The following morning I had my catheter removed, and once DH arrived to be with the baby, I had the best shower ever!

I went home on the Sunday, I felt ready. The pain was controlled with oral tablets and I was active and well. I'm now 8 days post section, and feeling pretty good. I'm not taking any painkillers any more, BF is going really well, and my wound is healing nicely. I'm managing to go out every day for walks/trips to the shop etc but haven't done anything silly like cleaning or lifting.

I know this is pretty long and detailed, and most people know how an ELCS goes, but I just thought it might help comfort someone that's yet to have theirs. It's really not as bad as I thought!

Glad you're feeling so good about it all Lady

Have felt better littleegg! Am shattered and struggling with crying etc. I love DS to the end of the world and back but it's so difficult

alittleegglayonaleaf · 25/04/2015 20:12

Flowers hope you can get some sleep FiRaffe and you can feel better x

cinnamongreyhound · 25/04/2015 21:22

Tiredness makes you teary I think FiRaffe, it does get easier! Can you out your finger on what you're struggling with?

FiRaffe · 25/04/2015 21:29

I'm sure it'll all get better. I think it's all just a bit overwhelming, especially the manic crying. The idea of being on my own with him terrifies me but we will get there. He's only 2 weeks old today

cinnamongreyhound · 25/04/2015 21:42

Ds1 cried sooooo much, I used to call dh at work as I didn't know what to do. Pretty sure he had undiagnosed reflux but it got better around 12 weeks. dh used to take him from me as soon as he got in from work and that helped but he cried from 3 til 8pm every day unless he was feeding Sad. Sam had a whingey morning today and I was getting frustrated, took him for a walk in the sling with the dogs and he settled. He's had a quieter afternoon and that helps. Really hope you start to feel better soon, hopefully your first day without dh will give you a bit more confidence. I took ds2 to school one day last week without dh and I had a mild panic! I spend all my time with multiple children and for some reason a trip to school with my own two children without dh really worried me, I think I'd got to rely on him but everything was fine and I'm feelin ore confident about going back to work next week all the time.

FiRaffe · 26/04/2015 00:00

Thanks cinnamon. I think i'd be a lot worse if I didn't have you ladies here to answer my stupid questions etc. Thank you all

So my birth story wasnt great and will take me a while to get over.

Throughout pregnancy was monitored for previous bp problems although i didnt have any issue consultant decided i needed to be induced. Was booked im st marys in manchester for a sat at 38+2. Given all three gels with only 1cm progress. However it was easter weekend and apparently they were really busy so said as soon as they had space on delivery suite they would take me through for the drip. However there were 10 people in the queue on priority basis but now the "process" had begun i wasnt allowed home. 5 days of waiting on the ward and seriously questioning if i was getting depression and threatening to walk out they finally took me through at 38+6 in the evening.
I managed 7 hours of contractions on full strength drip without pain relief. Tried gas n air hated it so was given an epidural. After 12 hours on the drip and babys heart rate fluctuating the docs decided to give me an emergency section. In theatre the epidural stopped working. The anesthestist wouldnt believe i could feel her pinching me untill i made a huge fuss and was also given a spinal block. Que baby being born. Then they couldnt stop me bleeding. Husband has since informed me blood was all over the floor. Lost 1.5 litres of blood and was in theatre for ages.
Only positive is healthy happy baby who came out hungry and went straight on for bf.
Was shocked to be discharged the next day. Thankgod for my mum moving in for a week or i wouldnt have managed. Even got stuck in my own bed and sofa.

Anyway shes here and v cute. Has none of my features at all. Def a daddys girl!

PenguinPoser · 27/04/2015 04:54

That sounds really rough heyitsholly sorry you had that experience. If it might help you you can normally request a debrief appointment either with a midwife or your consultant to talk through what happened and why. Congratulations on your lovely DD though Smile

FiRaffe · 27/04/2015 05:58

I can't believe they discharged you so quickly Holly after a serious operation and blood loss, but glad you had your mum's support and i'm sure you were sick of the hospital by that point!

cinnamongreyhound · 27/04/2015 07:17

So sorry to hear that HeyitsHolly, I'm sure I'd have been the same re the waiting if I hadn't left and gone bavk to our local hospital. It is so soul destroying, I cried a lot too and you did 2 more days than me Sad
Glad to hear your mum has looked after you!! A lady opposite me had lost 800ml of blood and was closely monitored, I was discharged before her so don't know how long she stayed. The blood loss could well be a complication that they couldn't have known about but if you feel you need some answers then make sure you get them! Enjoy your dd Flowers

Siarie · 27/04/2015 11:37

I lost loads of blood but they managed to stem it nicely, they gave me some iron tablets and all the tablets I had before birth apparently helped with me not feeling the effects of the loss. Gross to think about though, can't imagine feeling the pinching during the section, gosh!

My Birth Story

Some of you may already know part of this story as i was on mn when labour started (although I just thought i had a bad back from sitting on the floor!).
At 01:40am i'd started with an achey back and just couldn't get comfy. after tossing and turning and listening to my rainbow relaxation track i opted for a hot bean bag at 3am to try and ease my back. when that didn't work i decided i'd get into the bath at 4am. i turned the lights off and lit candles around the bath and played my positive birthing affirmations (i'm genuinely not a hippy honest!)
at 4:40 i felt a funny pop and thought it may have been my waters, but as i was in the bath in the dark i wasnt 100% sure. I sat up above the water and felt a bit "gooey". So i got out o the bath and told DH that he wouldn't need to go to work in the morning as my waters had gone, but to go back to sleep for now and i'd wake him if i needed him (as I figured it would be hours before i'd need the pool and a mw). I called the birth centre to let them know my waters had gone and they said they would send a mw in the morning. By 5:30am the surges had got stronger and i was struggling, so DH called birth centre to say we couldn't hold on until morning and I lay on the bed while he read some relaxation scripts to me.
I ended up back in the bath and when the MW arrived at 6am told me I was already 7cm and would i like to come down stairs and get into the pool. that was even nicer than the bath! lovely and warm and DH put Friends on (the news was boring)
At 7:30 I got the urge to push and so the fun began! MW didn't have a mirror so couldnt check me and asked me to put my hand down and see if i could feel his head. I put my hand down and felt a squishy lump and was a bit panicked. Thought something was wrong with his head or it was the cord or something. but it turns out it was his arm! the little bugger decided he was coming out superman stylie and had his hand wrapped over the top of his head so delivery was way more difficult than it needed to be. he was out at 08:06am :D
Unfortunately i ended up with 3rd degree tearing (perennial tear, internal anal sphynctor tear and labial lacerations) so had to be transferred to hospital to be stitched in theatre. but i was out of theatre by half 11 and eating tea and toast :) (which was difficult with the extreme shakes from the spinal.

PenguinPoser · 30/04/2015 10:29

Sounds lovely hiding apart from the tear of course. Love the fact that you gave birth with friends on Grin

FiRaffe · 30/04/2015 12:32

Great story hiding and tea and toast is the best!!!

I need sleep!!!

FiRaffe · 01/05/2015 05:22

We're mostly still over in antenatal cowbiscuits. Probably getting to the point where most regular posters have had their babies so we could move over!

cowbiscuits · 01/05/2015 07:08

Hi Giraffe

Ladynovember I really liked reading your story as a description of a CS. Glad you are recovering well.

cinnamongreyhound · 01/05/2015 07:14

Enjoy your sleep cowbiscuits! Seems to be mostly for birth stories at the moment until everyone's had their babies.

Hidingthefear · 02/05/2015 02:29

ladynovember I've been told I may need a section if I have another baby depending on how I heel from this one and it instantly put me off wanting another. But after reading your story and that your doing well 8 days later maybe elcs aren't quite as bad as I fear.
heyitsholly you poor thing, sounds like you've had a pretty rough time Flowers glad to hear your lo is doing good though.

Hope you get some sleep cowbiscuits

we managed our first night sleep in he'd last night (son is 10 days old) and we were very chuffed. I've not been able to sit up due to stitches and bruising so have been sleeping on couch so I can get up and down and feed easier. And DH has slept on other couch out of sympathy lol

cinnamongreyhound · 05/05/2015 12:01

Could we do something here with names and babies and dates of birth? Feel free to add more but would be nice to have a current list and an idea how old the babies are :)
