is he just too busy and excited to allow you to feed him?

This ^ mainly. And the fact he wants to feed himself rather than someone doing it for him. He wants to be in control. I don't think he doesn't like food.

I think puree is going nowhere though, so I think we are at the point of admitting defeat with it. I think I will use up some of it with pasta as a sauce instead.

We've been going with the organix and other baby snacks and they have been going fairly well. Its just they aren't really much of a meal.

He has been trying to attack me whilst eating in the front room and steal my food so its a game to him so I've been going with that a little, but most of what we eat isn't really up to small hands (or would be ridiculously messy). We are going shopping shortly with this in mind though. I am finding if I eat something, then he instantly becomes interested in it too. I've tried eating the puree (which is quite nice!) but he has not of it. Yet he likes the sodding ice cream which is essentially the same method of feeding.

I don't think it help that we don't have a dining table at normal height (breakfast bar height table) so he can't sit at the table with us easily so sharing food with him has been difficult. We couldn't find a suitable high chair chair at a reasonable price so went with the ikea one.

We had omelette last night which worked reasonably well. Its just he can't physically pick the food up and put it in his mouth and ultimately if we give up on the puree then we will have to simply ride it out until he can feed himself enough.

I am massively relieved that he isn't allergic to eggs like my brother as its the best binding agent for finger foods.

Red, this is the thing I was badly describing...

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B004QQ5HMU/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1429360259&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&keywords=baby+feeding&dpPl=1&dpID=41nNn0OTRIL&ref=plSrch

Might be worth a try?

I've also found that if I give DD a big bit of toast to munch on I can sneak little bits of toast/sultanas/dried apricots in when her mouth is open. If I go near her with a puree filled spoon during this time it gets hit across the room though. I think she doesn't notice food in my fingers as much as she does food on a spoon.

It sounds like once he realises that getting food in his mouth is even more exciting than the rest of the paraphernalia then he might start eating!

LillyBugg · 18/04/2015 14:02

red for the high chair issue - we have this Highchair.

We have a breakfast bar as well, but it is at table height. But we are really short on space so I wanted a seat without legs. I love sitting at the table with DS. It makes food sharing very very easy and I just put the food directly on the table in front of him rather than on a plate or a tray or anything.

RedToothBrush · 18/04/2015 17:36

Lilly, I looked at those and very nearly got one. I got vetoed by DH who said he wasn't sure if it would work with the lip on the table. The ikea is good to be fair, just not ideal for us.

We've been out for lunch at wagamamas today. We ordered some duck gyoza. Perhaps not the healthiest thing. However he DEVOURED it and most of it went down the hatch so we are considering it another win. We were surprised he managed so much. Pastry parcels look like a good idea.

He's also had a nibble of an almond biscuit. (DH's fault. I wasn't watching) Doesn't look like he's allergic to almonds then.

I've just looked up the calories in my wagamama lunch for my fitbit. I want to cry! I managed to wipe out my entire calorie budget for the day in one fell swoop. I turned down pizza express as I foolishly thought wagamamas was the healthy option!

LillyBugg · 18/04/2015 17:46

I love duck gyoza! Mmmmm.

I have a table with a lip that I haven't yet tried the chair on. I'll give it a go and let you know. The bars underneath loop up to allow for a lip. You never know!

lilone1234 · 18/04/2015 19:41

Red - I hope some of the other ladies ideas (you're all coming up with some gems!) with weaning help you. It certainly seems that once he manages to feed himself more efficiently he'll be off but of course the struggle with it now must be very frustrating.

DD has been quite good with weaning. We started off entirely on purees which after refusing all for a week she has since demolished nearly everything offered to her. Finger foods and meat and fish introduced over the last couple of week. She seems to be showing a clear preference for finger foods now though and spends a lot of meal times when she's being spoon fed whingeing. She does still eat it between the whinges though...i'll be trying to shift the balance more towards more solid food but of course the problems are that she eats less and the meals are not so complete (with meat and veg etc) and also take a lot longer! It may be that she's tired too as she's fine at breakfast generally but struggles more at lunch and dinner which is closer to nap times. Someone mentioned My Lovely Little Lunchbox - i'm going to give their vegetable fritters a go this weekend and also some sweet potato 'bread' (mashed sweet potato, egg and cheese mixed together and baked) from a BLW blog for some more substantial finger foods.

Sleep has not been great this week either, not sure what it is. DD's sleep seems to have gradually got worse since being a newborn rather than better! At a couple of months old she was sleeping through the night and now we're back to multiple wake ups! She is getting too big for her crib so we need to make the move to her own room but that will be difficult if she keeps this up, but then I think perhaps the smallness of the crib is a contributing factor to her waking up now. She's easily stirred now, so if DP or I are restless in bed and rustling the covers or the dog gets up and walks around that seems to disturb her.

Team - Well done on the weight loss! It's so hard to resist chocolate and other bad foods when sleep deprived! I've lost 2lbs this week and 4.5 in total over the last 3/4 weeks but have eaten an easter egg today and am having savaloy and chips for dinner tonight!

I'm feeling pretty frazzled right now. I'll be so glad when football season is over. DP has been out one day a weekend for football most weeks since DD arrived (last weekend there was no football, he went to cricket instead!) and then I spend the other day running around doing the jobs that are too involved to do during DD's nap and batch cooking her food for the week so I get absolutely no down time whatsoever and rarely even get to go out anywhere as a family let alone by myself/with friends!

Re. Work - I'm not due back to work until August but I don't plan to go back, I haven't made any childcare arrangements or had any contact with work since I went on maternity leave. As difficult as being full time mum is, it has always been my desired job! I do wonder how much this will impact us, I have stewed over it and still am...

cookielove · 18/04/2015 20:40

Red - what did you have at Waga's? Also have you tried loading up a fork with finger food as in stabbing it on and then giving it to him, it may help with the harder to hold foods.

I am back at work 19th of July, waiting to find out if my compressed hours will be given to me.

We completed on our flat and have been busy painting it so we are shattered today, hoping that E has a good night, he got his first tooth today :)

holls2000 · 18/04/2015 21:02

so antibiotics seem to be working. fingers crossed. I had a smiley boy back today, at least.

so impressed by the hospital they were fab.

weaning we are still pretty much on puree. I have tried bread with dairylea and he licked it but other than that I am still v pathetic. we are going out for lunch tomorrkw so I may see if there's anything on menu to try him with.

I go back to work end of June.

Holls - glad he's feeling better. How did 4 Drs/nurses before hospital miss an ear infection?!

holls2000 · 18/04/2015 22:45

Lil, I wondered that but registrar said cos you can't shove a bud in to clean ears there is always a lot of wax so difficult to see. Took two paediatricians to spot it in hospital. After doing urine samples incase of uti..the bag over the willy. First time he pooed - having not done one all sodding day - so couldn't use that one. Second one he weed everywhere other than bag. So they resorted to a sanitary towel and stringing it......

Holls, so glad he's on the mend.

RedToothBrush · 19/04/2015 11:37

Thanks to everyone for the tips. We are having a baking day today to try and get a few things DS can have.

DH made cheese and potato bread last night which we had in bed for breakfast. (Yep baby in bed, eating food. How slothenly. There aren't too many crumbs in the bed thankfully as we shoved DS on a blanket)

Holls, your poor DS. I've had reoccurring ear infections and they are hell on earth. More painful than my ELCS without a doubt. Its a pain you just can't escape. I'm glad you've got to the bottom of it and he's hopefully getting better.

cookie, I had chicken raisukaree I really didn't think it was that bad when I ate it.

TeamEponine · 19/04/2015 14:21

I was looking at the wagas nutrition last week as I was going there and was similarly shocked! Chicken ramen is the lowest thing they have Grin

RedToothBrush · 19/04/2015 14:40

I think they must pure lard in the food Team!

Even more so as I was going to have a salad but DH persuaded me it would be fine to have and wouldn't be that bad.

RedToothBrush · 19/04/2015 14:48

Oh and I just made wholemeal apple muffins from my lovely lunch box. I'm shit at baking (DH is the cook in our house). I'll let you know how it goes and whether they are approved by 'The Boss'.

Its a great site btw and we've got a few ideas to try out. We've been really bad with food since half way through my pregnancy and have lived on too many ready meals so its all a bit of a culture change. We've ordered a fortnightly veg box to force us into cooking better and to reduce our food bill.

jaykay34 · 19/04/2015 17:10

Team Well done on your weightloss. You can definitely do it ! And don't beat yourself up over having the odd treat - it's actually good to have the odd cheat day as it confuses your metabolism and stops you reaching a dieting plateau.

Re: Weaning. We are just muddling through with it. It's a mix of spoonfeeding and BLW, and not always 3 meals a day - sometimes just 2. I'm lucky as J eats anything, but obviously prefers some foods to others. I have a freezer full of sweet potato purees - which he just seems to hate and will only take a few mouthfuls whilst looking disgusted. He's got a sweet tooth - favourites are mashed banana, mashed over-ripe pear, apple pieces etc. I bought some jars for when we go out - egg custard and fruit purees which he loves. He also adores ice cream. This afternoon we had roast dinner and he ate a tiny mashed potato, cauliflower cheese, carrot and sucked on a yorkshire pudding. Really unhealthy, but he enjoyed it.

I am back to work on June 8th. I have a really flat feeling now that the easter hols are over ..it's like a countdown back to work Sad .

LillyBugg · 19/04/2015 18:27

jay I don't think that the roast you described is unhealthy at all! I must have low standards lol. I'm lucky, DS eats anything and loads of it. I reckon I could spoon it in all day and he'd eat the lot. Tonight he had a large portion of broccoli and cauliflower cheese, some carrot sticks, a cow and gate fruit pouch and some pieces of pear. He only stopped because he had to poo. I'm sure at some point it will all turn round on me and he'll refuse to eat lol. Or maybe I just have a good eater and I'm stuck with the sleep issues instead!

Red I checked my Highchair on the lipped table. It would have fitted had there not have been another hidden lip underneath iyswim? The normal table lip is about two inches down and about one inch into the depth of the table, it fit fine over that. But just underneath there is another lip which I've never seen before so the bracket couldn't screw flat against the table. I hope you have a good visual imagination or all of that won't make any sense! Basically, it might fit on your lipped table!

FATEdestiny · 19/04/2015 19:27

I have a similar bottomless baby Lilly, she'll eat anything and everything.

Todays new food was whole corn on the cob.

Commented to DH about those dog toys you can get where you put food inside and the toy then keeps the dog entertained for hours trying to eat the food. Corn on the cob has the same effect on DD. She was really intrigued by it, turning it around in her hands. Spent time working out how to get it to her mouth and exploring several different ways of chewing it. Kept her interested for ages.

Just to sort of join in with and step back from the back to work chat - I won't be returning to work for at least another 5 years. Longer if I can get away with it! I love my SAHM role.

Likewise to join in with and then step back from the weight loss chat - I have tons of weight to lose but no motivation or interest in losing it. It doesn't help that I think I must have reverse body dimorphic syndrome (or whatever its called) in that in my mind I am slimmer than I actually am! Until I gain some incentive or motivation, DH & I will continue to share our Malteasers most nights while cuddling on the sofa.

cookielove · 19/04/2015 21:15

E is a good eater (I know how lucky I am) and finally has started to eat other ff aside from organix crisps (yay)

Ff here is still organix stuff!!!

Ella :-) to the rolling.

I think the weekend has knocked b's routine out. He woke up at 10.30pm and was wide awake. It took an hour to settle him back down. On sat night he woke up at 3am and was wide awake till 4.30.....................

Ha, another one with body dysmorphia! Photos should be banned, as I think I look fine until I see photos!

A is finally starting to eat things, only a few mouth fulls, but we are getting there. He had weetabix at my parents over the weekend and loved it. so hopefully he will start to eat more Grin

Went to look at a nursery today ready for starting back to work in July. It seemed lovely, but I feel sad that I will have to leave him. Sad

FATEdestiny · 20/04/2015 13:33

Great news on your rolling baby Ella - it's an exciting new stage.

Our routine is all out of kilter too because of the Easter holidays. So many children around in the daytime and the fact that our days naturally have less structure without school runs means that naps became very haphazard.

They are back tat school today, so working on getting the routine and structure back.

lilone1234 · 20/04/2015 15:17

Fate - How did you feel about becoming a SAHM? It is what I want to do, and have always planned to do while my children were under school age, and fortunately it should be do-able with DP's current salary but I find myself feeling like I shouldn't want to? I think there has become such a focus on women returning to work and we often hear of the guilt associated with going back to work but I feel guilty in a way about not going back because I feel that's what the done thing is now?

I'm also young to be giving up work for some years (26) and am planning a wedding next June which we have funds in place for but will mean that we will put of TTC number 2 longer than we otherwise would have, so there is time for me to go back for a while...

It's just a job though that I have no love for, not a profession. I'm good at it and could progress as a full time dedicated worker because there are a lot of people at the same level it's tough competition. As a part time working mother, I wouldn't be able to compete.

It seems everyone else is planning to return to work? Is anyone else planning to be SAHM at some point?
