Our first thread on the 'other side'. And may all our soon to be mummies join us in this adventure through the early days of parenthood as we continue to share exciting times.

I've always said the same about mr tumble!

has anyone had any smiles yet? I'm really looking forward to the first real smile.

Grinningcat · 04/03/2015 18:37

I've had what I am convinced are smiles. He seems to generally be a very happy little soul.

Right it's official I have mastitis. Finally put two and two together and connected the breast pain in my right boob with the temperature and generally feeling ill since Monday. Now on a weeks worth of antibiotics. Planning on expressing to provide relief and keep milk ticking over, but essentially decided to go over to formula. I feel so vindicated. All those bloody people saying that it was either just my nipples needing to get tough or that his latch although it looked perfect, must need fine tuning because a good latch wouldn't cause pain... Angry

Thingsare LO is 6 weeks this week and he gets a twinkle in hos eyes like he is smiling but his lips gurn so we are halfway there! Grin One thing we have had is when he sleeps he giggles! My friends dd did this loads but ds1 never did, it is the cutest thing.

Another day stuck on the sofa with vecro boy, my first real bad day, I cried, he wouldn't be put down, sling didn't really work today as he has been breathing badly today so couldn't be stuck to me.

Then I lost the bag full of new Clothes for me, dh's bday presents and cards, he had thrown it in the bin thinking it was rubbish! Luckily I got them out before bin day. Where your stomach muscles seperate during pregnancy is really hurting from having baby on me for days....grumpy grumpy grumpo

freneticfox · 04/03/2015 21:09

I'm bloody sure my LO is trying to smile... He pokes his tongue out eventually when we do it at him and when we smile at him, his lips and cheeks twitch, it totally looks like he's trying and he's almost three weeks.

Too soon for a smile, right?

Also I get the whole 'witching hour' thing. Inconsolable child this evening!

Memphisbelly · 04/03/2015 21:18

Frenetic I think they sometimes try to smile for a few weeks before they do so at 3 weeks he may be giving it a good go. I hope it is me or ds who gets the first smile from him, mil was attempting to get him to smile and I thought if you do I will never forgive you Grin when they start doing things like that it makes all the sleepless nights more managable.

For past 2 hours ds has been asleep....not on me! Managed to get some jobs done but worried hecnow wont sleep tonight

purpleteapig · 04/03/2015 21:52

Has anyone else's LO got acne? Baby has developed really bad spots over the past few days - it looks terrible! I googled it and the general consensus seems to be to leave it and it'll go by itself.

GeekyHybrid · 04/03/2015 22:02

I hope Donnie feels better soon memphis, sounds like it's hard work for you at the mo.

things we've had definite smiles for the last week or so, though the majority seem to go in hubby's direction. I get the 'light up' face, generally when I've just got a boob out for him!

purple acne here. He had it at birth - paediatrician said to leave it alone and definitely not squeeze. It did go away after a couple of days and has now come back in the last few days Hmm One cheek has got loads but LO doesn't seem bothered so I'm ignoring it too.

Memphisbelly · 04/03/2015 22:25

Geeky Grin at light up face at your boob!

Is the acne milk spots? Just looked at pics of ds1 and at this stage he had loads on his temples, ds2 has none so far but he is rashy on his neck, I am pretty sure its from spitting milk and it pooling in his neck. We are attempting bed, he luckily is more relaxed at ned time, have hv tomorrow then going to see my friend, will be good to see someone who will take Velcro Baby for a cuddle to give my arms a rest

freneticfox · 04/03/2015 23:36

Purple - my LO had mild acne, my midwife said to gently wipe over with a cotton wool ball dipped in cooled boiled water. Was sceptical but it cleared up the next day!

thingsarelookingup · 05/03/2015 00:30

Loving all these babies starting to smile. I'm really looking forward to that. It might make her current refusal to sleep a bit more bearable.

BanglesSpangles · 05/03/2015 02:32

Ffs, bloody nappy leakage again! What the bloody hell am i doing wrong that means he's fine all day but clothes are getting totally soaked at night?!

GeekyHybrid · 05/03/2015 06:51

I spoke too soon re milk leakage. Woke up with a huge wet patch on the sheets. I'm so annoyed as night was the only time that they get aired and the right nip in particular is very sore at the moment - in fact it feels like LO is scraping it with razors when he suckles. If anything it's got worse since I started putting lanisoh on it again, is that possible?
Oh, he wouldn't take a bottle again last night, was only happy (read stopped crying) when put him to my sore drained boobs Hmm Whilst I intend to carry on bf it would be useful for the odd evening off if he'd take a bottle of expressed. My friends 40th is at the end of the month Wink

Bangles is there a lack of bottom on your baby? I bought the asda ones as the have a puckered elastic waistband on the back to stop bum leakage at night

Honeybird · 05/03/2015 07:51

Geeky I never found the creams helped even though so many swear by them. In fact I even blame them for delaying the recovery of my nipples with my first and this time haven't used any at all. But I am unusual in that. Almost 4 weeks here and bf is now pretty much pain free ( occasional bad latch...)
We keep a towel under the sheet on my half of the bed.

GeekyHybrid · 05/03/2015 08:16

4 weeks tomorrow here honey. The pain thing is annoying as bf had settled after all the trauma of the first week. And it does seem to be since I started using the cream again. Though LO is not being helpful as we speak, he just grabbed my nip in his fist. OWzers. Hopefully it will settle, again. It's bf support group at the drop in centre this am so I will be asking someone to check his latch etc.Confused

BanglesSpangles · 05/03/2015 09:25

Interesting, memphis-thinking about it the asda ones didnt leak, so maybe thats the reason... Shame our nearest asda is a fair way away but itll be worth it if the poor sod doesnt have to lay in his own juices of a night!

LancashireTea · 05/03/2015 11:25

I think the baby blues have well and truly hit me now. Spent half the night in tears about her feeding and sleep patterns. She is still feeding for long spells and is using me as a dummy. She then won't settle in her bed. I'm so upset because she was thriving in the hospital and was sleeping for ages. Can barely get 2 hours out of her now. Feel like I'm doing something wrong.

Grinningcat · 05/03/2015 12:19

lancs how long have you been home now? I was told by a midwife that coming home can really disrupt them, but that as most come come when the baby is a day or two old, most people put it down to being a newborn rather than being in a new place.

Well my temp is down today and feeling better. However I have been expressing and the milk from the right mastitisy boob was pink !!! Shock don't think I'll be feeding DS that anytime soon!

LancashireTea · 05/03/2015 12:23

We got home at lunchtime on Tuesday. My mum thinks it is a change of environment and maybe her bed is too cold as she has a lower body temp anyway (like her mummy). She's currently in her bouncy chair asleep. Have managed to eat something, have a brew and put the washer on so feel like I've done something other than watch her sleep.

LittleMissSunshine33 · 05/03/2015 12:38

Lanc it was the same for us it took him while to get used to somewhere new he now takes a while to settle at night but once settled only wakes up for feeds took a week or so.

It feels like LO just screams when with me I think it's because he can smell the milk but sometimes he's only just been fed. Have had a few frustrated moments where I've just had to put him down crying and walk away Sad

GeekyHybrid · 05/03/2015 12:51

The joy, I have a nipple bleb! The bf workers didn't think there was any signs of thrush and felt the bleb was the cause of the pain. Now I need LO to go to sleep so that I can try clear it. Oh the glamorous world of bf!! And he's just filled 3 nappies in less than an hour.

Lancs I hope it all settles for you soon. grinning that sounds so painful, hope it keeps getting better for you.

Honeybird · 05/03/2015 14:34

What on earth is a nipple bleb?

Honeybird · 05/03/2015 14:35

I google image-d it. Wish I hadn't.

GeekyHybrid · 05/03/2015 15:13

Luckily it's just the one little white 'spot' but no luck shifting it so far. Might be GP's tomorrow Sad

Hi everyone Smile

Finally feel like I'm getting back to a normal-ish life now. Definitely helped that DP has gone back to work now!

Bethany is 3 weeks old and I'm enjoying her so much.

Will have a good read of this thread later to try and catch up!
