Sazzle that noise sounds like silent reflux, reflux related colic appears a little later - once the reflux acid has burned baby's throat. If you are going to go dairy free - sadly its not just a case of cutting out obvious sources - you have to read every label Sad and in 40-50% of cases soy needs to be eliminated too. After 2-3 weeks your system will be free, and baby will be clear in another 2-3 weeks. You should see an improvement in 1-2 weeks. In the worst cases docs advise cutting beef too but we've never had to.

Crumble eek scary biscuits! Get well soon xxxx

Hello all, a bit caught up having not checked in for a few days. For those experiencing anxiety check out mind website and maybe rethink.

One thing that is often helpful is self reassuring statements: write a small speech which you will then read aloud when feeling anxious. The speech should say something along the lines of "this feeling is anxiety, anxiety cannot hurt me although it feels terrible I have felt this way before and it passes. This feeling will also pass.

Write it in your own words and read aloud repeatedly until anxiety abates.

Also check out breathing exercises online. My

puppythedog · 22/10/2014 17:35

Favourite is breath in for three seconds, pause for three seconds and breath out for three seconds. Do this three times. It does not matter about through nose and out of mouth etc. for a breathing exercise to be helpful practice it when you are not panicky. I suggest every half an hour everyday. When you do the practice sit yourself down and relax your posture, deep those shoulders for example..

I can post a bit more later if it helps?

I need formula feeding advice. We changed from breast to bottle 2 days ago and my baby wants a bottle sometimes every 2 hrs. The formula box says 6 feeds of 90mls but alex has been waking after 2 hrs and wanting a feed. Is 2 hourly bottles normal? Sometimes it's only 20 or 30 mls. She is 2 weeks old today :)

Happytimes31 · 22/10/2014 17:54

Yes please puppythedog. I find if I am anxious or nervous it makes me feel really sick Sad

Bumpforme2014 · 22/10/2014 18:05

Helloooo I can't keep up on this thread, think my almost five week old has silent reflux as well. She makes some loud noises, grunts and strains a lot after her feed. Formula feeding here so switched to an easier to digest one...question is, do you do anything about reflux or just wait until they grow out of it? It's awful to watch her squirm uncomfortably and exhausting listening to her grunts all night.

puppythedog · 22/10/2014 18:30

I'll post an anxiety management type post when I can get to the computer, maybe tomorrow then. In the mean time start with the two exercises I posted. Pick your own breathing exercise by all means. But practice practice practice. Then use it when anxious. Anxiety will always pass, it always does.

YellowWellies · 22/10/2014 18:58

Bump if FF its much easier ask for infant gaviscon or carobel - they thicken formula so it can't be refluxed back up and are added to a bottle. They're cheap so GPs annoyingly also try to prescribe them for BF infants whom its nigh on impossible to get them into! For BF infants proton pump inhibitors are best - they reduce the acidity of stomach contents and are given via oral syringe.

madamweasel · 22/10/2014 19:59

clairemiss don't worry too much about the guide on the formula box, it's an average figure. If baby's hungry little and often then so be it. If you're concerned, keep track of actual intake over 24hrs and total it, then compare to the 90mlx6 guideline and see how they compare. My DS always drank more bottles than the guidelines. Also, if you're concerned about ff the formula brand has a helpline you can call for their specific advice. Their websites are often quite helpful with q&a pages.

Happytimes31 · 22/10/2014 20:51

Thanks puppy. For all those experienced breast feeders out there, I have a lot of supply and it comes out fast, he is currently feeding between 8-10 mins every three hours is that enough? Lots of poos and wees. I had thought feeds should be 10 mins plus Thanks

Thanks Puppy. Today i've felt incredibly anxious an stressed all day. I've not had the blues yet and today is day 12 so it could be that. But post partum anxiety and depresssion runs in my family so I must keep an eye on it. I've been in tears since about 3pm and basically when he cries, I cry! A horrible feeling. I think its also to do with DH going back to work on Monday, he has been an enormous support.

Tory79 · 22/10/2014 21:14

happy yes that's what my ds1 used to do and he was packing on nearly 1lb a week for a while! I had a lot of milk, it came out vey fast and he was a good feeder! I used to really worry about it - how could he possibly be getting enough when most babies seemed to be feeding for 30m plus at least! But he was. Just enjoy it! Ds2 is doing the same thank god!

Happytimes31 · 22/10/2014 22:46

Fab thank you!

ohthegoats · 23/10/2014 01:58

Wow, 10 minutes every 3 hour would've be great! At the moment we're doing approx 15-20 minutes per boob, but I usually have to offer bothered boobs. Just the one doesn't seem to be enough, and would result in her having to be fed again within sn hour and a half or so. Two boobs will get me 3+ hours. Plenty of milk and she drinks quite well.

YellowWellies · 23/10/2014 02:30

2 boobs gets me 2-3 hours but this will improve as she gets bigger. Frequent wakings is how nature designs it for the first few weeks to reduce the SIDS risk and because BM Is so easily digested. It doesn't mean she's a crap sleeper and will never sleep through. But yes it is utterly disappointing when she wakes and its only 2 hours after I put her down. Even more Sad when noone's posted on MN in the interim! Smile

fedupofrainydays · 23/10/2014 03:02

Two boobs get me 2 hours. Sometimes a bit longer at night. Ds1 was the same if not going longer at night. At the mo he's cluster feeding every eve from 4/5'til 10 when I go to bed. DH gives him a small bottle (2/3 ounces) of expressed at some point and that gets him through til 2.30 ish. Means I can get about 4 hours sleep in a row if am lucky!

I've got a wedding on the 1st. It's a glam event. What am I going to wear?!?! Need to be bf friendly too. Don't want to fork out loads so any suggestions for somethjng cheap but glam? Might browse h&m tomorrow. I've got some dresses but they are very casual.

My DS is 2 today, as hard as these early days and nights are - it goes so quickly xxx

ohthegoats · 23/10/2014 04:41

Sticky eye. Apart from using breast milk to clean it, any other suggestions? Also, her belly button thing fell off on day 5, now day 10 and it's sort of bleeding - in a scabby way rather that red blood way. Anything I should do about that?

fedup - that's s hard wardrobe issue. I can't find any nursing clothes I like, let slone partly fancy ones. I just want non stripy, non spotty, non frumpy dresses, tunics etc, can't find them anywhere. Got 3 dresses from jojo thsn I had for work whilst pregnant which are very discrete for feeding, but too smart for every day dressinh. Urgh, minefield.

binkybunny · 23/10/2014 05:07

fed up I got a lovely LBD from Mamas and Papas, you can't tell it's a nursing dress. I wore it when pregnant too and had lots of nice comments.

Have posted this on fb too, but does anyone have any advice for boob relief advice when trying to dry up milk? We're ff but my milk has come in and is agony. Hospital midwife said cabbage leaves, which have been amazing but community mw yesterday told me they increase supply Sad. Any suggestions gratefully received!

mrsb87 · 23/10/2014 05:23

Feeling really disheartened tonight, poor Dylan is so sick after each feed. I've tried feeding on my side and leaning back to try and slow the flow down so he isn't guzzling so much but it doesn't seem to stop his sickness. He has projectile vomited a few times too which the HV seemed concerned about and to mention to the doc but he didn't seem bothered at all Sad at the point I just don't know what I can do to help him

fatpony · 23/10/2014 06:54

Goats my one's belly button got a bit bloody after the cord dropped off too. I looked online and it said it's normal.

fatpony · 23/10/2014 06:57

For those offering both breasts how do you keep tem awake/interested for the second one? I only really managed it yesterday a couple of times by sitting him up/blowing/taking legs out of babygrow etc. not very easy but he does feed well from the second once awake enough.

FrauEnglischLehrerin · 23/10/2014 07:19

goats you can put some breastmilk onto a cotton wool pad (make-up remover pad) and put that over the baby's navel so that it's held in place by the nappy. It will soften the crusty blood and then you can wipe it off at the next nappy change.

crumble really glad to hear that you're recovering. That must have been a really scary time for you and your family, so it's great that you can see a positive side to it.

sazzle also great to hear that you and your little boy are doing well.

I need a strategy for coping with the idiotic stuff MIL comes out with. She's not in the same league as some of the others mentioned on here, and she is so generous with her time looking after dd that it really is churlish of me to complain, but she drives me insane asking about ds' sleep. A couple of days ago I was able to answer that we'd had a good night (feeds every 2.5-3 hours, slept in cot in between) and she responded with "oh it'll all get better now he's started sleeping" Hmm. Then yesterday she told me she'd texted dh's cousin with a cute pic I'd taken and updated her that ds "wasn't sleeping through yet". Hmm Hmm Hmm I reacted quite strongly and said of course he wasn't sleeping through, no one would expect a 10 day old to sleep through and she backtracked and said she'd phrased it differently and anyway dh's cousin had replied that her 2yo still wasn't sleeping through, so I should should take some comfort from that Hmm Hmm Hmm. Yes, MIL, the prospect of not sleeping for the next two years is deeply comforting Angry.

So what can I answer to "how was the night?" which will avoid idiotic comments that totally wind me up and hopefully get her to stop asking?
