Thread to share the newborn news and support each other through the 'eeek what do I do?' When the baby gets home and you stare at it in the car seat and think - help!!

Glad I can finally join you all here :-) still in hospital as my Bp has been high. I'm on medication now and hopefully going home tomorrow. Violet is a night owl has been awake all night Friday and Saturday which makes for a very tired mummy it's too noisy to sleep in hospital during the day. She hasn't got a great latch so far she doesn't open her mouth wide enough. She also looks very jaundiced so asked mw to do sbr test which suprisingly came back fine! But will keep eye on it.

YellowWellies · 12/10/2014 18:18

Ha we've been parents of two kids for 17 days and Jonas made his second visit to A&E in that time today! The wee feck only shoved a sweet corn kernel right up his nostril. Argh. I hope Lilla is more sane than her kamikaze brother Confused . 4.5 hours later and he's home. Looooong relaxing Sunday!

YellowWellies · 12/10/2014 18:20

Me lovely to see you. Have you tried parking her cot in sunlight? That helps with jaundice. Lilla struggled to open her mouth wide enough for the first few days but now she's like a wee baby bird!

MrsBadCrumble74 · 12/10/2014 18:39

Yay! We made it - DH, Sebastien and I are snuggled on the sofa. Beautiful happy hormones :) BF going ok but the little man has a mild tongue tie and is struggling with the latch a bit - my nipples are ouchy. Going to try and get it sorted tomorrow. Last night was tiring. Sleep for 1 hr, feed for nearly an hour. ConfusedBrew
Our dd comes back home tomorrow after break with pils - going to be interesting!

Me23 · 12/10/2014 18:44

I will certainly try that at home yellow unfortunately the hospital design doesn't allow for a lot of natural light.

Milk should be in tomorrow not looking forward to that feeling. Again.

YellowWellies · 12/10/2014 18:49

Me I found engorgement was much shorter lived this time, I reckon your boobs know what they're doing more. It only lasted 12 hours not 3 days this time. I hope it's over quick. That's the only bit I hate about BF.

Hello baby Sebastian!

YellowWellies · 12/10/2014 18:50

Sebastien even - apologies for my milk addled brain!

MrsBadCrumble74 · 12/10/2014 18:56

No problems - it's the French spelling, although missing an accent on the first e as cannot find one on my phone Confused
My milk came in super quick but still engorged much to my DH delight Blush Not sure whose face is more amusing - Sebastien with punch drunk milky face or DH enjoying the view lol

YellowWellies · 12/10/2014 19:06

The French spelling is lovely! My DHs eyes were on stalks when I got porn star boobs the first time round too! I'm normally a C but went up to a FF cup! Confused My boobs are much more modest this time.

fedupofrainydays · 12/10/2014 19:32

Yeah, my boobs were bigger last time too! They took less time to settle as well. Just a day or two of the porn star engorged look. DH thought it was comical and cartoon like!

Ah sweetpea I love Reuben too. Smile

You know this reflux noises in throat - what kind of noises? My boy def makes some odd ones, particularly at night. I'm doing soy milk on my cereal as did with ds1 too and made a difference for him.
Also read some article last night about took many doctors diagnosing reflux when it's not Confused as it can be mistaken for lactose intolerance, colic and other stuff.

fedupofrainydays · 12/10/2014 19:34

Oh and re the natural light in hospital - I asked to move to a bed next to te window as I was holed up in the darkest hottest corner ever which made no sense for a jaundiced baby Hmm

OP posts:
YellowWellies · 12/10/2014 19:50

fed up 40% of reflux is actually caused by cows milk protein intolerance (lactose intolerance is incredibly rare as otherwise babies would react to the natural lactose in BM, lactose intolerance tends to arise secondarily if food intolerances are ignored), and of CMPI babies nearly half also react to soya as the protein is a similar size and can also irritate the gut. The noises you hear from silent reflux can range from weird hoarse groans, throat clearing, choking noises, the sound of liquid sloshing, repeated swallowing noises, a persistent cough to an odd goat bleat noise. Reflux caused by classic GERD (inadequate stomach sphincters) is pretty rare out with premmie babies. CMPI is estimated to affect 25-40% of babies. It's a spectrum most will have a mild reaction (we aren't designed to consume another mammals BM) and / or be unable to detect it in BM.

I should stress I'm an utter cynic about allergies and intolerances - until I had J and saw how badly he faired when I ate even the slightest trace of cows milk. I'm not woo at all. I love dairy - mmmm cheese, chocolate, cake, tea but I went 18 months off it as the alternative was a sleepless hellish screamfest.

fedupofrainydays · 12/10/2014 20:32

Yeah I think this article was talking about GERD and another acronym one and said the cows milk intolerance is a separate thing altogether and doesn't need medicine (the article was about too many babies being prescribed stuff when didn't need it). Not saying it's right but interesting as they were saying reflux due to probs with the sphincters is very rare.

OP posts:
YellowWellies · 12/10/2014 20:34

I read it too I thought it was very good but disagreed on one small point - very serious CMPI can require meds as well as an exclusion diet.

Speaking of exclusion diets....
DH is sitting next to me eating a massive cream trifle to himself.

fedupofrainydays · 12/10/2014 21:46

That's cruel yellow!!!
I've got to admit since giving birth I have indulged in an excess of Brie, goats cheese, and I've had a glass of wine most days since being out of hospital! Yesterday was ds1 little party (he's 3 next week) so had some prosecco.
Weight loss mission starts after 6 week check. Although I've lost fair bit naturally or through stress of the scary early days in hospital / SCBU (almost 2 stone) just a stone to go now! Actually looking forward to hitting the gym. But need to work on my pelvic floor before any jumping or running can take place!

YellowWellies · 12/10/2014 21:57

After four hours of a tantruming toddler in A&E I think he deserved it! I did 18 months without before but now I know all the dairy free cheats I bet I don't lose 2 stone in a month like last time Confused

BadgerInBury · 13/10/2014 00:06

Hello everyone! Officially checking in after our beautiful baby Gabriella Janice was born on Wednesday. Feeling pretty good, if somewhat sore in my back (turns out I twist a lot in labour!) and totally in love with this little badger cub.

TheDogs hope all is going well for you and the little one now.

porcito · 13/10/2014 02:31

Congrats to all the new mums (and dad)!

We finally had a successful day out. I realised that battling with a blanket over her when trying to feed was never going to work and so have embraced the getting it all out approach. Sorry conservative Mexican townsfolk.

Here they advise all newborns to have a 'sun bath' for half an hour a day to help with the jaundice so we put her on a mat next to the window for 15 mins each side, like a roast chicken! Grin

YellowWellies · 13/10/2014 02:34

Porcito yey to sunbaths! I love that term. And yey to boobs out. Jonas used to freak out every time I tried to cover him - so I had to do the same. This time I'm not looking back. Boobs are out - deal with it world! Smile

fedupofrainydays · 13/10/2014 03:17

Ha ha - where abouts in mexico do you live porcito?!

Some parts would go crazy with the whole boob thing. When I went to mexico (about 10 years ago now) a lot of the men seemed to think I was some sort of porn star / wanted to have sex with them as I am pale / blond / blue eyes and clearly like someone randy bitch from the movies. They would have fainted if I got my boobs out! Some bloke even had a wank on my leg - utterly rank. (Btw I was wearing 'practical' travelling stuff too so not dressed at all sexily!) it was 10 years ago now!

OP posts:
fedupofrainydays · 13/10/2014 03:23

Ps. Apart from some unwanted attention I totally loved mexico!! I had such a laugh and also got obsessed with queso crisps.

Bump food is generally ok. You might just find baby reacts to some food differently such as garlic, tomatoes, spicy food etc. ds1 used to get a sore tummy when I ate too much garlic.
I try to limit alcohol to similar levels as pregnant but everyone is different.

fedupofrainydays · 13/10/2014 09:27

I do bump. I don't know what the rules are but I have a little of all of those now. With caffeine I still don't have more than two cups a day though. The best time to drink a small glass of wine is as you feed or just after as it will be out your system by the next feed anyway. Although very very little actually goes through to baby - it's not like the placenta.

SweetPeaPods · 13/10/2014 09:27

Meant to add I try to limit my caffeine too, similar to when pregnant but I have tonnes of decaf tea to use up anyway. I prob won't buy another box when they are gone.
