Even though dc3 is end of August, thought I'd start a sept thread :-)

How are you all doing?

dS1 is 9 dats old. Feeding well and surely sleeping well but it's hard to know as I keep falling asleep at night feeding him!

was wondering if bf/ff made a difference to the length of sleeps really

The line is it does, most of the time anyway. Formula fed babies often can and do have longer gaps between feds and sleep through the night sooner. Most anyway.

One of my children was ff and he was sleeping 12 hours without a feed from 7 weeks old. That is the big benefit of formula feeding.

I think when breastfeeding you just have to adjust your expectations. My DD is only 3 weeks old and from 11pm to 6.30am ish I only usually do one feed - which I think is brilliant and makes her a good sleeper. It's not the same as sleeping through would be if she was formula fed.

But honestly, that half hour in the middle of the night when all is quiet and it is just me and her sharing a very special cuddle with no distractions. It is wonderful and I value it highly. I wouldn't get that if she was bottle fed.

SeptemberBabies · 22/10/2014 13:51

Correction: The bottom line is it does.

CumbrianExile · 22/10/2014 14:40

Hello ladies.

Very jealous of those long sleepers, although A has done 6 hours at night twice now. In between those 6 hours though he has had a couple of very restless nights! Getting there though.

Aidan is baby number 1 for us, I would like another (DH wants another 2!) but it will be a couple of years off I think. I have just gone back on the pill although tiredness is stopping much happening anyway Grin

I am FF, but it doesnt really make much difference to my lack of sleep, as DH is back at work now so I am doing the late/early morning feeds anyway. He does take over when he gets in though, which is generally A's crying/unsettled time anyway so I do get a bit of a break.

velvetlilithi · 22/10/2014 15:11

About sleeping, formula can make baby sleep longer, but it doesnt apply on all babies. My 4 week old sleeps anything between 1 - 3.5 hours and he is ff. The longest sleep he had was 3.5hours two nights ago. Every longer sleep is followed by very short one

More children: K is our first, definitely want another one. Plan is to start trying when our boy is around 1 year old, we'll see how it goes.

Contraception: I want to have contraceptive patch, its not used while breatfeeding but as I've lost milk already, dont have to worry about than now, unfortunately Sad Waiting for the 6 week check to ask for it.

Sex: We had sex for the first time 10 days after my c section. It wasnt really comfortable and was a bit painful. Second time better and now I'd say we're back where we were before. Just baby seems not to like when we want to enjoy time together Grin He wants all our attention for him only.

Everyone needs different lenght of time to recover so I'd say nothing is unusual here.

Re sleeping on tummy - ds is a tummy sleeper and we started allowing him sleep on front since a few weeks ago - (he is 10 weeks, adjusted age is 7 weeks)
Letting him sleep on tummy changed every thing for me, he would not settle anywhere but on me during the nights and would wake a few min after putting him down - now he sleeps between 2 and 5 hours unbroken on his tummy and let me sleep nicely too

I mentioned before- we bought a breathing monitor so I am not even nervous putting him on his tummy

CoolCat2014 · 22/10/2014 16:01

Sleeping - DD (breastfed) often sleeps solidly from 2am to 8am. She just doesn't go to sleep anytime before 2am Confused

Nice to get the good solid block, but would love it if she went to sleep a little earlier. Maybe the clocks changing will help?

Allisgood1 · 22/10/2014 16:27

Sleeping: DS is a tummy sleeper. Always has been and I don't worry too much as he can move his head side to side. He often sleeps 6-8 hour stretches and is EBF. he's 8 weeks and my best sleeper yet.

Contraception: I'm getting the mirena again. Although I dread the insertion Confused

More kids: DS is dc 3. We will likely have one more.

We are in the throes of a growth spurt. He fell asleep around 9 last night, woke at 3, and has been more or less non stop on boob since. Usually I can sleep feeding him but he kept coming off boob, wiggling, not latching, I had to switch sides over and over. Dd1 on half term this week and next week and we had a play date and they destroyed my house. Confused Huge glass of wine when dh gets home. Also I start meds for anxiety today. Hopefully they kick in quickly.

The longest ds has slept night is 6hrs he has done that twice. I hope it becomes more regular. He seems to be really unsettled since his injections :(

ilovemonstersinc · 22/10/2014 17:20

Allis is it really that bad?? Im going for the coil and dr said come im when your on your periods as it's easier to put in?

SeptemberBabies · 22/10/2014 17:29

Sorry your DS is unsettled after his jabs Cookie. It's not unusual. Can he have calpol or anything like that yet?

When my eldest were young there was a childrens medicine called Medised, I don't know if anyone remembers it? They made it for only 2+ children, then made it 6+ and now it has been withdrawn altogether. But 10 years ago it could be used from birth (or maybe 3 months?). Great stuff, it had a sedation effect so made DC sleep. Unfortunately many Mums used it to knock out their children night after night, regardless of if they were ill.

I used to swear by Medised for injections.

lilone1234 · 22/10/2014 17:53

september is that why it was withdrawn? I know the sleepless nights are hard but I wonder why one would have children if they were just going to drug them up every night!

velvet in awe of you dtd 10 days after c section! I'm 5 weeks post c section now and haven't done it yet - won't until after 6 week check especially as it's been infected but I'm still very nervous about it!

Re. More children. Molly is our first baby and if we are lucky enough I would certainly like more but probably not for another couple of years. We will need a bigger house first!

ShowMeShowMeTheWine · 22/10/2014 19:25

Can I just ask - have people started getting af back yet? Just realised it returned about now with dd1 so will be on the lookout.

Allisgood1 · 22/10/2014 19:25

Cookie, I hear it's better when you're on your period but I'm EBF so that will be about a year or so! So I have to have it not on my period. I asked for a numbing injection last time as that's what other people told me to do and then afterwards the dr said "I'm not sure it's actually in your uterus so I'm referring you for a scan" Hmm Turns out she didn't do them routinely but it was in my uterus. So now it makes me very nervous (I won't be seeing her again though!).

DS has been on boob all day long. I can see why people give up if they have days like this. Hoping he's not like this all night and tomorrow!

September, I remember medised with fondness Smile the U.S. version of benydryl for kids has the same drug with no paracetamol and I tend to bring it over and and use it on my dc as needed.

velvetlilithi · 22/10/2014 20:49

lilone No surprise you're nervous about it,especially if you have infection it's understandable you're waiting. We only tried cause I felt really okay and did everything as normally from day 3 /although more careful/. Also my hubby just couldnt wait any longer lol. Blush I was afraid of pain and tearing stitches, but I'd say it's just about going really slowly and carefully and only if you feel up to it. There's no reason to rush something like that after surgery.

Good luck Wink

cookielove · 23/10/2014 02:48

sept Eli has had calpol for the fever and he had some on Tuesday when he seemed really unsettled and agitated, Wednesday I didn't give him any.

all I am having the implant that goes into the arm not the coil. The coil sounds horrific!

holls2000 · 23/10/2014 03:44

Arghhhhhhh after smugness of good sleep yesterday comes the night of doom (ish). B on bottle from 7-11 basically (not continuously) as was hungry but there was gap for sore tummy. Think he needs a poo but it isn't coming at thr mo - he is ff. Tonight has seen him bring milk back for the first time in 4 days. Tio much to eat?!

Anyone know any ways of encouraging poo to happen?????

misog2000 · 23/10/2014 06:01

A warm bath always gets Em pooing holls, she also quite often stuffs down too much food in one go and a bit then comes back up.

cookielove · 23/10/2014 06:32

Eli is the king of not pooping, he is ff too. We have tried colief and comfort both ended in lots of vomit, on Monday we tried prune juice and sterile water 1oz prune 2oz water. It has helped gkush out hus system :)

cookielove · 23/10/2014 06:33

Gkush = flush hus = his

Honeybear30 · 23/10/2014 07:59

My mil swears by dissolving a little brown sugar in booked water and allowing to cool. Apparently that helps constipation. Have to say we have only had the opposite problem here! I was on antibiotics after delivery and we both had the opposite problem (DS is bf), that was not a fun few days!

CoolCat2014 · 23/10/2014 11:45

DD screamed the whole if last night and didn't go to sleep till 6am (I'm not going to eat curry again). I've got a stonking sore throat and painful ears and I bashed my head really hard in the middle of the night. I want a hot toddy.

bananapickle84 · 23/10/2014 12:01

cool that does not sound like a good night, hope you get some rest today.

DS has been having poo problems too and at 4.5 weeks old was put on Lactulose. It started working after about 4 days and he is now pooing daily. Hoping he won't have to be on it too long as I wasn't too keen on him being on meds at such a young age.

CumbrianExile · 23/10/2014 12:18

Oh Cool, that doesnt sound good. I was sulking at being up at 5 (after not going down til 1.30) for the second day running, but at least I got a couple of hours. Hope you get some sleep this afternoon.

ilovemonstersinc · 23/10/2014 13:39

Banana have you tried freshly squeezed orange in cool boiled water? Ds1 was on ittoo from such a young age.
